✨✧ Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77Pais Tropical ... LP
A&M, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great album from the early 70s – one that has Sergio and crew doing Brazilian tracks with a bit of an LA studio feel – one that takes their older bossa groove into even more soulful territory! Dave Grusin and Tom Scott did the arrangements, both in the best styles of their key early work – which means that things are tight, but never to slick or overpolished. The album's a real standout gem that links together 2 different period's of Sergio's career – and titles include wonderful versions of "Asa Branca" and "Zanzibar", plus a version of "Pais Tropical", done here in one of the best versions we've ever heard! Other tracks include "So Many People", "Gone Forever", "I Know You", "After Midnight", "Morro Velho" and "Tonga". LP, Vinyl record album

Milton NascimentoNoticias Do Brasil ... LP
Tropical (Germany), Early 80s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A beautiful Milton Nascimento collection from the early 80s – one that almost returns to some of the more intimate modes of his earliest years, while still holding onto the sense of majesty that he picked up during the 70s too! Milton's vocals are wonderful, as always – filled with a raspy sense of charm that really grabs us, no matter what the setting – and the instrumentation ranges from smaller, intimate acoustic backings, to a few tunes that bring in some touches of strings or larger arrangements – yet usually never too overpolished at all. CD brings together material from the albums Cacador De Mim and Anima – and titles include "Anima", "De Magica De Danca E Pes", "Filho", "Evocacao Das Montanhas", "Noticias Do Brasil", and "No Analices". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes original inner sleeve printed in German. Cover has light wear.)

Gene AmmonsBad Bossa Nova (aka Jungle Soul) ... LP
Prestige, 1964. Very Good- ... $19.99
Bad Bossa Nova is right – as Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! The session makes great use of 2 guitars at the same time – using that of Kenny Burrell for soulful rhythm, but also adding in Bucky Pizzarelli for some nice acoustic embellishments – in a mode that's similar to the soul jazz-com-bossa style used on records like Ike Quebec's Soul Samba or Charlie Rouse's Bossa Nova Bacchanal. The overall rhythms are a bit more complicated, and a bit more soul jazz based than those sets – with Hank Jones on piano, Oliver Jackson on percussion, and Al Hayes adding in some sweet extra bongo! Titles include the classic "Ca'Purange" – plus "Anna", "Yellow Bird", "Cae Cae", and "Moito Mato Grosso". Also issued under the title Jungle Soul! (Ca' Purange). LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono yellow & black label NJ pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a small top seam split, some light wear & aging.)

✨✧ Cory DayeCory & Me ... LP
New York International, 1979. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A dark little groover from the later days of disco – key crossover work from Cory Daye, and a great bridge between a number of different club camps at the time! There's clearly a mainstream diva influence going on here, but the overall quality of the music is a lot more complicated and hipper – with some of the jazzier and retro-tropical flourishes of the Ze Records scene, plus a bit of moodier electrics on the great hit "Green Light" – a chanting, catchy number that crossed over big. Other titles include "Single Again", "Be Bop Betty", "Pow Wow", "Keep The Ball Rollin", and "Rainy Day Boy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a small peeled spot from price sticker removal and is bent a bit at the edges.)

Guido & Maurizio De AngelisIl Signor Robinson, Mostruosa Storia D'Amore E D'Avventura ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1976. Sealed ... $19.99
An Italian comedy take on the story of Robinson Crusoe – one that's served up with lots of light musical touches, thanks to the team of Guido and Maurizio DeAngelis! The music here is a blend of tropical themes and some of the comedic 70s modes you'd guess from the cover art – rootsier percussion and a bit of light ukulele to create the "island" elements – and some warmer, fuller passages that evoke the Italian placement of the film – although overall, the music is probably more attuned to the acoustic elements than most of its type from the time. Heavy vinyl pressing features 12 tracks from the film – plus the 7" single versions of "Signor Robinson" and "L'Isola Di Robinson". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited reissue from 2016.)

Martin DennyForbidden Island (2nd cover) ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $18.99
Martin Denny's music always takes us away to the tropics – and this set is a whole Forbidden Island of exotica tunes! The record features the classic Denny exotica quartet with Augie Colon and Julius Wechter – plus some additional guest players on flute, percussion, and guitar – rounding out things very nicely. The expanded sound works nicely for Denny's style – and the mood incorporates plenty of easy lounge arrangements of the fairly standard instrumentation in the backdrop – broadened wonderfully in the arrangements! It's sort of a blue-eyed tropical feel – one that makes it a cheeky classic! The set includes some good originals like "Goony Birds", "Cobra", "Exotica", and "Primitiva", plus the Les Baxter tunes "Port Au Prince" and "Sim Sim", as well as a perennial exotica fave, "March Of The Siamese Children". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing with deep groove in the foil cover, with splits on the top & bottom seams and some clear tape, with light surface wear & aging.)

KC & The Sunshine BandWho Do Ya Love ... LP
TK, 1978. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Classic 70s work from KC & The Sunshine Band – a record that's not as hit-heavy as previous efforts, but still a plenty great set that's filled with catchy dancefloor funk! KC's clearly feeling the heat of the disco fire he helped to ignite a few years before – and there's definitely an ear hear towards tracks that would boom out nicely on a heavier sound system – kind of a deepening of the sometimes bargain basement production the group got on earlier TK records. That approach doesn't dampen the groove, though, and there's still a nice mix here of soul, funk, club, and tropical modes – sometimes a bit off the mark, but still a heck of a lot better than most of the group's contemporaries! Titles include a remake of "It's The Same Old Song", plus "Who Do Ya Love", "How About A Little Love", "Sho-Nuff'" and "Come To My Island". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch, and is great overall!)

Nautilus/MCA, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99 19.99
Great later blowing from John Klemmer – clear, clean, and extremely well-focused – with nary a dull moment throughout! The album's a mostly acoustic one – save for some keyboards from Milcho Leviev – and the sound is tremendous, very much in keeping with the farther-reaching modes that Klemmer was exploring at the start of the 70s – imaginative, always-creative solos that really take off in the freedoms of the post-Coltrane years, yet which always stay focused and soulful throughout. Other players include Oscar Castro Neves on guitar, Ray Armando on percussion, and Roy McCurdy on drums – and tracks include "Tropical Snowflakes", "Love Affair", "Paradise", "Arabesque", "Touch", and "Summertime". RCA, Mid 50s. Very Good- ... $4.99
Noro Morales turns his rich talents to a set of merengue tracks – but the style's a lot different than you'd expect from the later sound of the genre! Instead, these cuts have a sly sinister sound, with kind of a snakey approach that adds a nice element to the music, and which keeps things in a lively 50s Latin mode. Tracks include "Tropical Merengue", "Lo Casaron", "Dona Ramona", "Siren", "The Twins", and "Can't Help It". LP, Vinyl record album

Page MortonMay You Always ... LP
MGM, 1961. Near Mint- ... $12.99
Page Morton's floating in a sea of red on the cover of this rare album – and the music has her swimming in a similarly watery style too! Arrangements are handled by Leo Addeo – who you might know from late 50s tropical and exotica sides – and although his approach here is more in keeping with a vocal session, he also still shows his great ear for those languidly seeping tones around the corners of the edges – a feel of flow that draws us in even before Page's vocals pick up the lyrics! There's a bit of organ used at times to emphasize this approach, and some occasional other exotic instrumentation too – on titles that include "Bill", "Don't Blame Me", "That Old Feeling", "May You Always", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", and "Paradise". LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1979. Sealed ... $19.99
Jazzy soul all the way through – and a great little album from Lenny White and the Twennynine combo – a group that features some especially great keyboards from the great Don Blackman! The style here's a bit like some of Blackman's own work – rooted in fusion, but focused towards soul – with vocals on all tracks, but lots of tightly crafted riffs and grooves underneath! Keyboards and guitars are in the forefront on top of Lenny White's drums – but tunes also feature some EWF horn work, and an occasional vocal chorus arranged by Blackman, and featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater and Googie Coppola! Tracks include the classic 80s groover "Peanut Butter", plus "Tropical Nights", "Best Of Friends", "Take Me Or Leave Me", "Citi Dancin", and "Betta". LP, Vinyl record album

There's not much to go on from the cover, but most of these numbers appear to be from the late 60s or early 70s – and the overall vibe is heavy rock, but with a touch of soul – so that most of the rhythms end up coming out nice and funky! Titles include "The Funky Chicken", "Pais Tropical", and "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose (edit)" by Rabbits & Carrots; "Buscando La Felicidad" by Las Moskas, "Soul Sintonia" by Jae's Soul, and "Push & Pull" by Los Litos Barrientos. A&M, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A far reaching late 70s set from Gato Barbieri – a record that blends fusiony jazz funk, lush stings, and Latin rhythms and fluid solos on a varied batch of tunes! One of the more interesting things about the production is that those varied approaches often come into play within the same tunes – with clean, lean fusiony bass and percussion underneath swelling string accents, showing Barbieri was unafraid to intermingle myriad influences at the time. Titles include a take on Caetano Veloso's "Odara", plus "Poinciana (Song Of The Tree)", "Latin Lady" (which guest Carlos Santana trading solos with Gato over tropical jazz funk backing), "She Is Michelle", "Where Is The Love", "Evil Eyes" and "Bolero". Great stuff from Jorge Ben! The record features a batch of 3-track medleys that combine titles that Ben recorded over the past 10 years of his career – all blended together in a tight funky way, with that excellent soulful sound that he was using in the mid 70s! The groove is great all the way through – and the record's a massive party that recalls some of Jorge's best tunes ever, all recast in that tight hard 70s funky style we love so much! Includes nice remakes of "Que Maravilha", "Zazueira", "Pais Tropical", "Taj Mahal", "Que Pena", and "Mas Que Nada". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jorge BenJorge Ben (1969) ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue pressing.)

✨✧ Biddu & The OrchestraEastern Man ... LP
Epic, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Magical disco work from the enigmatic Biddu – one of the few guys working from a larger mainstream studio perspective that we can really dig in the genre! Biddu's got a way here of blending older pop modes, Eastern instrumentation, and soaring disco strings – at a level that's almost a slightly tripped-out take on the Barry White sound, but which is also unabashedly pop as well. Original tracks and surprising covers juxtapose on the set – and while some of the work on the album's relatively mellow, there's more than a few tunes that keep the disco groove up! Titles include "Nirvana", "King Kong", "Puerto Rico", "Boogiethon", "Funky Tropical", and "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Morton GouldJungle Drums ... LP
RCA, 1956. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pre-exotica relic – cut just a year or two before bachelor pad music really broke big, and a very important album in helping get the whole thing started! The record's got a more serious feel than you might think – as pop classical conductor Morton Gould put together this mix of traditional, classical, and jazz compositions to create a suite of tropical sounds based around the compositions of Ernesto Lecuona. As the title would imply, the album's got a lot of percussion – mixed with the larger orchestrations that Gould normally used in his work – and titles include "Danza Lucumi", "Swamp Fire", "Batuque", "Ritual Fire Dance", "Jungle Drums", and "Gitanerias". LP, Vinyl record album

A mellow mainstream fusion classic from the 70s – one that paired the gentle guitar of Earl Klugh with the sweet keyboards of Bob James – in a set that's filled with plenty of warm and laidback touches! The mode here takes off some of the darker edges from James' earlier sound, and softens it nicely with Klugh's colorful approach to the guitar – a slightly tropical mode at times, and one that dances breezily along with help from Ralph MacDonald, Ron Carter, Harvey Mason, and Gary King. Titles include the lovely "Mallorca", plus "I'll Never See You Smile Again", "Kari", "The Afterglow", "Love Lips", and "Winding River". LP, Vinyl record album

A real breakthrough album from Roberto Roena and his Apollo Sound combo – a record that showed the world that this scrappy little group could stand head to head with the giants of the 70s salsa years! As on other records, there's a strongly percussive vibe throughout – bongos from Roena, plus timbales, conga, and other percussion – all topped by a great horn section that features two trumpets, tenor, trombone, and flute – all of whom hit some wonderfully jazzy moments at time, filling in the set with some great tropical shades and colors! Vocals are by Tito Cruz and Sammy Gonzalez, and a number of well placed percussion and horn solos on just about every track. ✨✧ Joao SelvaNavegar ... LP
Underdog (France), 2021. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Joao Selva has a great way of bridging classic Brazilian modes and contemporary sounds – a quality we loved on his debut, and which seems to be even more fully-formed here on his second release! Maybe that past/present quality is no surprise, though, when you consider that the record's a collaboration with Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart – a man who's given us so much great music over the years, often in ways that move between decades and global scenes – borrowing just the right bits, and making something really new and fresh in the process! Selva almost acts like a lyrical focus for the grooves of Patchworks – who's equally at home in a Brazilian setting as he is in other tropical modes – on titles that include "Meu Mano", "Cade Voce", "Navegar", "Se Voce", "Tudo Vai Dar Pe", and "Devagar". ✨✧ Max Roach & Anthony BraxtonBirth & Rebirth ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful step forward for drummer Max Roach – working here in very creative company with saxophonist Anthony Braxton! Although Roach could have easily rested on his laurels as a famous bop drummer – and have spent endless years touring on highly-paid revival/reunion tours – he was a true creative giant who never stopped expanding his talents, especially during the late 70s, when he was matching up with some of the greats of the avant garde. This album is a perfect example of that commitment to modernism, as Roach duets with Anthony Braxton on a set of 7 fantastic tracks that stand apart from individual work by either artist – more loose and open than earlier Roach work, but a bit more inside than some of Braxton's – with fresh results from both players that never fail to delight! ✨✧ VariousBrazil 70 – After Tropicalia – New Directions In Brazilian Music In The 70s ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the post-Tropicalia years in Brazil – a time when cultural activity wasn't as politically explosive as before, but still continued to thrive at a highly creative level underground! The work of these years carries many inspirations from the Tropicalia years of freedoms – but it also often turns the focus towards the personal a bit more – drawing on individual roots and regional cultures for some of the elements in the music, and often pushing the sounds towards even more experimental levels! Some of the straighter modes of before have given way to more of a hippie aesthetic – but that approach is never nearly as self-indulgent as it is in the US, and more just an indication of how underground some of the musicians and ideals have gone by this point. As usual with Soul Jazz titles, the collection comes with great notes that really get at the music and the period – and the 2LP set features 16 tracks that include "Amor" by Secos E Molhados, "Tinindo Trincando" by Novos Baianos, "Punhal De Prata" by Alceu Valenca, "Passara" by Jaime & Nair, "Sai Do Sereno" by Gilberto Gil, "Corista De Rock" by Rita Lee, "Sete Cahorros" by Nelson Angelos & Joyce, "Ingazeiras" by Ednardo E O Pessoal Do Ceara, "Contendas De Sincora" by Mar Revolto, "As Adventuras De Raul Seixas Na Cidade De Thor" by Raul Seixas, "Pontos De Luz" by Gal Costa, "Mane Joao" by Erasmo Carlos, and "America Tropical" by Novos Baianos. The birth of a sound and the birth of a legend – Martin Denny's first album in the Exotica series, and a record so great it named an entire genre! Denny certainly didn't invent the tropical style of easy listening that came to be known as "exotica" in the 50s – but with a record like this, he delivered the goods better than anyone else – by taking away all the too-sweet styles of Hawaiian music, and serving up a stripped-down, jazzy kind of sound! The album features Denny's classic original quartet – with Arthur Lyman on vibes and Augie Colon on bongos – and titles include "Stone God", "Jungle Flower", "Busy Port", "Lotus Land", and his hit recording of "Quiet Village". A gem of a record from trumpeter Matthew Halsall – one of our favorite jazz musicians of the past 20 years, and an artist who just seems to be growing and growing with each new release! This set picks up on the organic, meditative quality of some of Halsall's recent records – but it also has a bit more bite, and is maybe almost a return to the roots of his earliest records on the Gondwana label – those classics that first made us fall in love with his music over a decade ago, and which made Matthew a real front-runner of the current global spiritual jazz underground! The set's got this very rich presentation – as the leader's work on trumpet is mixed with harp from Maddie Herbert, flute and tenor from Matt Cliffe, piano and kalimba from Livin Gheorghe, and great use of percussion, bass, and drums – all on long tracks that build with the best sort of post-Coltrane energy – titles that include "Joyful Spirits Of The Universe", "Mindfulness Meditations", "Tropical Landscapes", "Harmony With Nature", and "The Energy Of Life". These later tracks are all plenty darn great – and show echoes of changes going on in late 60s Brazilian music – not Tropicalia entirely, but some of the groovier moments at EMI/Odeon and Philips, with traces of influences from Edu Lobo, Marcos Valle, Jorge Ben, and Luiz Carlos Vinhas. 21 tracks in all – with titles that include "Ye Me Le", "After Sunrise", "Pais Tropical", "Crystal Illusions", "Mas Que Nada", "Bim Bom", "Look Of Love", "Chelsea Morning", "After Midnight", and their breakbeat version of "For What It's Worth". ✨✧ Caterina Valente with Edmundo RosFire & Frenzy ... LP
London, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A set cut with British maestro Edmundo Ros – in a style that's similar to some of his own albums from the time – not really straight Latin, but more a blend of tropical and exotic influences with some fuller big band modes! The style has almost an older sort of sound here – reminding us of work that might have appeared on RCA or Columbia during the previous decade – and Ros' sense of subtle drama is a nice counterpoint to Caterina's sometimes sweeter vocals. Titles include "Baiao", "Canto Karabali", "Frenesi", "Fale Baixinho", "Felicidade Infeliz", and "Saudades Da Bahia", which features Ros and Valente scatting together beautifully! ✨✧ Caetano Veloso & Gilberto GilTropicalia 2 ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1993. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Well, it's not the 60s anymore – but this is still a wonderful album that reunites Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in the spirit of their Tropicalia years – done in a style that shows that creative invention was still alive in MPB during the 90s! There's echoes here of modes to come by artists like Arnaldo Antunes, Lenine, or Chico Science – all of whom are clearly influenced by the spirit of Veloso and Gil. Acoustic guitars mix with rhythm samples and abstract production – and Caetano and Gil's vocals shine as wonderfully as ever – possibly even more so, given the warmth that comes from their age. Titles include "Cinema Novo", "Nossa Gente", "Dada", "Aboio", "Baiao Atemporal", "As Coisas", "Rap Popcreto", and a version of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

World Psychedelic Classics/Tropicalia In Furs, Late 60s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fuzzed out treasure trove of rare Brazilian psychedelia – wild stuff that's in many ways akin to the freewheeling sounds of the Tropicalia movement, but not necessarily taking on the cultural and political weight of that movement – and more about the boundless spirit of psychedelia and funk rock around the globe! The sounds are buzzing and indeed fuzzy throughout, ranging from raw and ramshackle guitar jams to more organ and drum driven funky, and it's really incredible stuff all around. We've been purveyors of hard to find Brazilian music for many many years, and this set – compiled by Joel Stones who also provides the richly detailed liner notes – brings to light some numbers we've never heard! 16 tracks in all: "Tema De Banana", "Era Uma Nota De" Loyce E Os Gnomes, "I Wanna Be Your Man" by Youngsters, "Ourico" by Serguei, "Lindo Sonho Delirante" by Fabio, "Cinturao De Fog" by Marisa Rossi, 'Som Imaginario De Jimmi Hendrix" by The Pops, "The Lantern" by Mac Rybell and more. Chico BuarqueChico Buarque De Hollanda Vol 3 ... LP
RGE (Brazil), 1968. Very Good- ... $14.99
Amazing work from a young Chico Buarque – a record that seems to draw on all the best elements of 60s Brazilian pop, and forge them into a sound that's all its own! At one level, there's a post-bossa style of larger arrangements here that recalls the work of Edu Lobo – handled by Maestro Gaya in a mode that recalls some of the best bits of the time on the Elenco or Forma labels. But at another level, there's also a personal and slightly folksy style that reminds us of the initial power of Geraldo Vandre – a sound that's clearly present in Buarque's work, and which stands in a direct line to the best strengths of the emerging Tropicalia generation. The set's filled with classics that include "Carolina", "Roda Viva", "O Velho", "Ate Pensei", "Sem Fantasia", and "Desencontro" – and a few tracks feature Chico in duets with either Toquinho, Cristina, or MPB4! Som Maior (Brazil), Mid 60s. Very Good ... $11.99
In the years immediately preceding the rise of the MPB giants of the post-Tropicalia years, Geraldo Vandre was one of Brazil's best talents, and an extremely strong singer/songwriter who managed to build a bridge from the bossa era to the present. This incredible album from the mid 60s is one of his best – and features an amazing set of songs that match any of the best Brazilian work of the 60s. Some tracks are folksy, some have a bit of a jazz sound – and the range of styles seems to run from Leonard Cohen to Marcos Valle to Dick Farney. Really great stuff – with an imagination and soulfulness that still leaves us breathless. Titles include "Requiem Para Matraga", "Tristeza De Amar", "Pequeno Concerto Que Ficou Cancao", "Rosa Flor", "Que Quizer Encontrar O Amor", and "Porta Estandarte". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gal CostaProfana ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A warmly jazzy album from Gal Costa – much more so than you'd expect from her slightly creepy white face on the cover! There's a fair bit of keyboards in the instrumentation – usually stepping around with a relatively mellow feel, which lets Gal concentrate on ballads and gently soulful numbers – all put together by a variety of arrangers who include Lincoln Olivetti, Paulo Ramiro, Luizinho Avelar, and Cleberson Horst. The sound is light years from the Tropicalia generation, but Gal more than proves herself to be a good interpreter in any situation. Titles include "Nada Mais", "Ave Nossa", "Vaca Profana", "Tililingo", "Cabeca Feita", and "Chuva De Prata". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips (Brazil), 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great live material from 1974, recorded in Bahia, and featuring Caetano, Gal, and Gilberto Gil – each performing tracks on their own! The quality's better than a lot of other Brazilian live albums from the early 70s, and the album's a strong one in Caetano's early 70s catalog – showing his keenly collaborative presence at the time, and offering up one of the few important documents of work with Tropicalia contemporaries Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil! Caetano sings "Felicidade", "De Noite Na Cama", and "O Conteudo"; Gal performs "Acontece" and "Quem Nasceu"; and Gil rounds out the set with "Terremoto", "O Relogio Quebrou", "O Sonho Acabou", and "Cantigo Do Sapo". ✨✧ Pedro SantosKrishnanda ... LP
CBS (Brazil), 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A totally unique album from the Brazilian scene of the 60s – a set that was recorded right in the middle of the big Tropicalia years, but which has more of the earthier touches that would emerge in the Brazilian scene during the 70s! Yet there's also a sense of tight arrangement here too – a bit like the soulful crackle that came from some of the EMI/Odeon sessions, but served up with a more folklyric sense of instrumentation – lots of percussion, cuica, and other regional elements – sometimes topped with a single horn, or maybe just a string flourish – but never in a way that dampens the earthy energy at the core! The sound is fantastic – mostly instrumental, although with some spare vocals too – and titles include "Agua Viva", "Ritual Negro", "Desengano Da Vista", "Dual", "Arabindu", "Quem Sou Eu", "Advertencia", and "Sem Sombra". Maria Bethania recorded some of her best early material in a live setting – and this album is great testament to that fact! Unlike some of her Tropicalia contemporaries – whose live records could sometimes be a bit rough around the edges – Bethania's albums were always very well-put together performances done with tremendous musical backings – all quite sophisticated, sometimes even more so than her studio sessions, and magically recorded in a way that still preserved a strong sense of intimacy in her vocals! ✨✧ Jards MacaleContrastes ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A straighter album than some of the early experimental work of Jards Macale – but maybe a greater album as well – and one that really shows the singer coming into his own, and finding a way to nestle his fresh ideas within the best settings of 70s MPB! The shift's a bit like the maturation some of his contemporaries were going through at the time – like Caetano Veloso or Gal Costa – reaching for a new level of sophistication in his arrangements, which might tie him back to older historical modes – yet still with a delivery that marks his willingness to reach for new styles. Elements of jazz, samba, and even some more offbeat qualities show up on the record – and the arrangements are handled by Wagner Tiso, Gilberto Gil, and Paulo Moura. Titles include the weird electronic/vocal number "Passarhino Do Relogio", which has a mad abstract Tropicalia-era sound – plus the tracks "No Meio Do Mato", "Negra Melodia", "Sim Ou Nao", "Sem Essa", and "Black & Blue". ✨✧ Sergio RicardoPiri, Fred, Franklin, & Paulinho Camafeu ... LP
Continental (Brazil), 1973. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing work from Sergio Ricardo – really one of his best albums ever, done with an incredible sound that's unlike anything else we've ever heard from him! There's a hip, folksy, post-Tropicalia vibe running through the record – of the sort you'd hear on some of the more obscure independent Brazilian albums of the period – as Sergio's joined by a hip group of young musicians, who play acoustic guitar, woodwinds, percussion, and other stringed instruments – in a style that's both jaggedly folkloric, and with some of the frenetic jazzy touches of some of Hermeto Pascoal's work of the time! The sound is hard to describe in words, but breathtakingly wonderful from the start – the whole album's as beautiful as it is revolutionary, and titles include "Calabouco", "Deus De Barro", "Sina De Lampiao", "Antonio Das Mortes", and "Beira Do Cais". ✨✧ Alceu Valenca & Geraldo AzevedoAlceu Valenca & Geraldo Azevedo (Quadrafonico) ... LP
Copacabana (Brazil), 1972. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An incredible debut from the team of Alceu Valenca & Geraldo Azevedo – Brazilian songwriters and vocalists, working here with arrangements and production from the legendary Rogerio Duprat! Duprat's style for the record is somewhat similar to his Tropicalia work – particularly in the way that he mixes the fragile, intimate vocal approach of the pair with some oddly-tuned horn bits, earthy percussion, and occasionally sweeping modes that help the tunes drift along on a gentle cloud of darkness. There's a simple, subtle poetry to the whole record – a quality that's not as trippy or experimental as Tropicalia work, but no less compelling – and very much in the spirit of the more introspective Minas Geraes generation. Titles include "Me Da Um Beijo", "Virgem Virginia", "Mister Misterio", "Novena", "Erosao", "Seis Horas", "Planetario", "78 Rotacoes", "Horrivel", and "Talisma". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff – and perhaps the closest that Maria Bethania ever came to cutting a record in the Tropicalia mode! The album was produced by Caetano Veloso – and the arrangements are a mix of dark jazz-tinged tracks and others that have slightly larger orchestrations – in a manner that's a bit like the blend of styles that Gal Costa used on her India album, or some of those on Nara Leao's 1969 session with Rogerio Duprat! The sound is powerful and extremely evocative – and one almost gets the feeling that Caetano's working out an older aesthetic with Maria after his return to Brazil! Songs are penned by Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Luz Melodia, and others – and titles include "Iansa", "Trampolim", "Bom Dia", "Anjo Exterminado", "Negror Dos Tempos", "Ponto/Esse Cara", and "Drama". Philips (Brazil), 1972. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic soundtrack recorded in the immediate post-Tropicalia years – featuring some of the best early 70s work by Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, Maria Bethania, and others! The cover has a mad image with Buarque, Leao, and Bethania in top hats and shiny uniforms – and the music follows up with a similarly lively spirit – samba-esque, with other touches of rock and jazz production that give the work an expansive and trippy feel. Roberto Menescal handled the arrangements – and titles include "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Mais Uma Estrela" by Nara Leao, "Soneto" by Orquesta De Cordas, "Soneto" by Nara Leao, "Partido Alto" by MPB-4, "Formosa" by Nara Leao & Maria Bethania, "Baioque" by Maria Bethania, and "Cantores De Radio" by Chico, Naria, and Maria together!
