Charles Bell TrioCharles Bell Trio In Concert ... LP
Gateway, 1963. Very Good ... $16.99
One of the few albums ever recorded by pianist Charles Bell – a fresh-voiced modernist who flourished briefly on the recording scene at the beginning of the 60s, when he recorded great records for Columbia and Atlantic, plus this little gem for the smaller Gateway label! The set's a live one, and has Bell playing in a style that's more open than some of his other records – still very much concerned with moods and colors, in an almost John Lewis-like way – but also playing some extremely inventive lines on the piano, and giving the record a keenly improvised quality. Titles include "Take Five", "Memories Of Home", "Whisper Not", "Work Song", "Prancing", and "Tommy's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono pressing. Cover has light wear and split top and bottom seams.)

King Fleming TrioWeary Traveler ... LP
Cadet, 1965. Very Good- ... $14.99
One of three rare Chess Records sessions recorded by Chicago pianist King Fleming – a great player who was part of the same big generation and Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal – and was supposedly a big influence on the latter! Every one of Fleming's records are a bit different – and this set features a combo with William Cochran on drums and Melvin Jackson on bass – who'd later go on to great fame with Eddie Harris. Arrangements are by Fleming and Will Jackson – and original titles include "Darn It", "Riff A Plenty", "Walk Softly", and "Weary Traveler". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vince Guaraldi TrioJazz Impressions ... LP
Fantasy, 1964. Sealed ... $48.99
Great early work from the amazing Vince Guaraldi – an album issued in the 60s on the wave of his rising fame, but which was most likely recorded a few years earlier! The group here is Vince's key early trio with Eddie Duran on guitar – grooving with Vince in drumless splendor that takes most of its rhythmic cues from Guaraldi's inherent sense of groove on the keys of the piano – a simple, spacious touch that's almost more magnificent here in its early simplicity than it is in later years. There's a slight influence of 50s modernism on the keys – bits of John Lewis or Bill Evans – but the warmth and lyricism of the overall set mark the record clearly as Vince's own musical vision. Titles include "Autumn Leaves", "Fenwyck Farfel", "Yesterdays", "Room At The Bottom", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

Tamba TrioTamba Trio – Serie Autografo De Sucessos ... LP
Elenco (Brazil), 1970. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Bossa piano, harmony vocals, and a sound that's unlike anyone else – heard here in some really classic sides by Brazil's legendary Tamba Trio! The group had a way of approaching a groove that was (and is) truly revolutionary – a sound that not only carried some of the freshest, most modern elements of 60s bossa – but which also encouraged a newly spacious approach overall, thanks to the mighty arranging talents of pianist Luiz Eca! This set features some of the group's greatest sides – and is a perfect introduction to their work – with titles that include "Mas Que Nada", "Reza", "Tamba", "Barquinho", "O Samba Da Minha Terra", "Influencia Do Jazz", and "Se Eu Pudesse Voltar". ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald/Tommy Flanagan TrioMontreux 77 ... LP
Pablo, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ella Fitzgerald swings it nicely with the Tommy Flanagan Trio – a small group on the date for backup, but one who give this Montreux performance almost as much bounce as Ella's 70s live dates with a bigger ensemble! Tommy seems to have a bit more punch in his piano than usual, and Fitzgerald really makes great use of that quality – hanging her groove on his bold lines nicely, with support from Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Day By Day", "Billie's Bounce", "Too Close For Comfort", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "One Note Samba", and "Ordinary Fool". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King Fleming TrioStand By ... LP
Argo, 1962. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Chicago pianist King Fleming – a lost talent that had a key influence on more famous players in the scene, but who rarely got his due because he hardly left the Windy City! The set's got a really incredible feel – partly in the gentle groove of Ahmad Jamal, but also with one ear towards the more righteous rhythms that were coming into piano jazz during the 60s. A key element of the strength of the set is work in the trio by bassist Malachi Favors – working here years before his time with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – and the set's also graced by some wonderful originals that show Fleming to be a heck of a great writer as well as musician! Titles include "Time Out", "Stand By", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Song Of Paradise", "Between The Toes", and "Lonely One". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label mono promo, with deep groove. Record is great – cover has some overall aging and light staining – and back has a small sticker.)

The title's a wonderful one – given the warmth and great spirit of this legendary trio – a near-perfect assemblage of the talents of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums! Both Carter and Williams help Hank to hit the hipper side of his talents for the 70s – and together, they work as one – with a well-rounded, well-crafted style that's a great testament to the group's strong appeal at the time. Titles include "Freedom Jazz Dance", "A Child Is Born", "Mr PC", "All Blues", and "Doom". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maliks Emerging Force Art TrioTime & Condition ... LP
EFAE, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant moment as a leader from saxophonist Maurice Malik King – a member of the St Louis underground in the 70s, but one who never saw the same sort of fame as contemporaries who left the city for New York and beyond – yet who continued to create some incredible music far away from the limelight! The early 80s set is a great example of the way the more sophisticated, sensitive moments of the loft jazz world of the 70s were taken to farther local scenes in the US, and allowed players to continue the journey with their own very personal levels of expression – something that's definitely the case here as King crafts these beautiful long lines on alto alongside the bass of Zimbabwe Nkenya and percussion of Qaiyim Shabazz. There's a very special sound to the whole thing – a mode that's every bit as unique as the Ritual Trio up in Chicago, yet every different too – as you'll hear on cuts that include "In Between Space", "Music To Me", "In Search Of Spirits Passed & Present", and "When Force Meet". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue pressing on yellow vinyl.)

✨✧ Jackie McLean & The Great Jazz TrioNew Wine In Old Bottles (Inner City) ... LP
East Wind/Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very apt title – as Jackie McLean sits in for a soulful session with the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – all "old bottles" at this point in their career, but working together beautifully to brew some very mellow "new wine"! The album's easily one of the best in the trio's run of the time – as Jackie's alto sax really helps flesh things out a bit more than usual – and moves the album past the trio sound of their other records. McLean gets plenty of space to do his thing on the longer tracks – and the piano of Jones, bass of Carter, and drums of Williams have a solid, soulful approach that's really wonderful. Titles include 2 McLean originals titled "Appointment In Ghana Again" and "Little Melonae Again", both remakes of older tunes – plus "Confirmation", "Bein Green", and "Round Midnight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is lightly bent near the spine in back.)

✨✧ Mike Taylor TrioTrio ... LP
Columbia (UK), 1967. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost set of modernist piano jazz from the British scene of the late 60s – very much in the mode of the best American work of the time by pianists like Steve Kuhn or Don Friedman! Taylor's got an incredible touch on the keys – a post-Bill Evans mode that uses space as much a sound, and which paints in broad colors and tones that seem to glisten in their own unique place in the musical spectrum. The sound is free, but never too "out" – and the trio performs a number of strong originals like "Just A Blues", "Two Autumns", "Guru", and "Abena" – plus completely transformed versions of "Stella By Starlight" and "All The Things You Are". A later album by the Zimbo boys, but which still has the Trio playing in their classic bossa style, and in a tribute to Jobim that's got them doing some of his best compositions, like "Wave", "Garota de Ipanema", "So Danco Samba", "Felicidade", and "Chega De Saudade". The sound is still acoustic – although the production's sweetened things up a bit – and the band hasn't lost any of their bossa flair over the years! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray Bryant TrioCon Alma ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from Ray Bryant – the kind of a record that few other players could ever hope to cut, and a fantastic demonstration of Ray's extremely soulful approach to the trio format! Bryant's working here with Bill Lee on bass and Mickey Roker on drums – in a triple-burning setting that has all players contributing equally to the groove – and often working strongly to create a great sense of counterpoint in the rhythms. Roker's drums are magically playful throughout – snapping and skipping along the top of the snare in a way that only furthers the rhythmic agenda of Bryant's piano. And Lee's bass has a laidback and mellow delight – one that rings out alongside the keys of the piano, and fleshes them out with some additional depth and color. The title track is a brilliant reading of "Con Alma", and the set also features Bryant's famous tune "Cubano Chant" – as well as the titles "Autumn Leaves", "Milestones", "Ill Wind", and "C Jam Blues". ✨✧ Ray Bryant TrioGotta Travel On ... LP
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stone groover from the great Ray Bryant – one of his brilliant albums for Cadet from the 60s! Ray's soul jazz trio (with Freddie Waits on drums) is augmented by the 2-horn trumpet section he used on some of his other Cadet recordings from the time – trumpet from Snookie Young and flugelhorn from Clark Terry, both of whom really help the album open up from the usual standard soul jazz trio side! The sound is really unique, and the "bottom" of the brass gives his piano a nice deep sound that you wouldn't necessarily expect from the arrangement – almost a bit of a bounce at the bottom, always helping the groove. The record includes a number of nice originals, like "Little Soul Sister", "All Things Are Possible", "Erewhon", and "Monkey Business" – plus versions of "Gotta Travel On" and "Bag's Groove". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue fade label pressing with deep groove. Cover has staining on the edges and light surface wear.)

✨✧ Great Jazz TrioChapter II ... LP
East Wind (Japan), 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The second part of a great Japanese-only session recorded in 1980 – one that features a later edition of the Great Jazz Trio – with Eddie Gomez on bass and Al Foster on drums, next to piano by usual group member Hank Jones! The set's got a hipper feel than usual for the group – partly because Jones plays Fender Rhodes on part of the record, and partly because Gomez's work on bass gives the proceedings a warm and soulful sound – that deep-flowing groove we first came to love in Eddie's work with Bill Evans and Jeremy Steig. Foster's drums are great too – and have a sense of sharpness that changes the Great Jazz Trio sound nicely. Titles include "Peedlun", "Light Listened", "Duplex", "Just Before Dawn", and "Sublime". One of the greatest 60s recordings from the Wyton Kelly Trio – thanks to some wonderful guest work from guitarist Wes Montgomery! Montgomery's working here in a gusty, rootsy style that recalls his best soul jazz sides from the earlier years – and which have a feel that's quite different than his later, more largely-arranged work for Verve. The Kelly Trio is in perfect form – with Wynton's heavy left hand leading the group on the piano, and superb rhythm backing from the team of Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Tracks are longish, with some nice solos – and include the 13 minute original "No Blues", plus "If You Could See Me Now", "Unit 7", "Four On Six" and "What's New". LP, Vinyl record album

Saravah (France), 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Bossa jazz from the French scene of the 60s – an ultra-hip album issued on the legendary Saravah Records label – and one that's one of the best illustrations of the label's way of blending together jazz and other global styles! The group here is a trio, with Fernando Martins on some wonderfully bold piano – working with bassist Edson Lobo and drummer Nelson Serra – in a groove that's rooted in older Rio bossa jazz modes, but also has a slightly more powerful quality, too – that special sort of late 60s flowering that Brazilian music had when it hit the very receptive European scene. The trio have a nice rolling sound that might be compared to some of the MPS jazz/Brazilian crossover sessions – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Nascente", "Bia", "Noa Noa", "Samba Novo", "Berimbau", "Nao Tem Solucao", and "Muito A Vontade". ✨✧ Ramsey Lewis TrioDown To Earth ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
From their inception in late 1956, Ramsey Lewis and his famous Young/Holt-era trio were destined for great jazz fame. This 1958 session on Mercury (then based in the group's native Chicago) catches the trio right at the beginning – when they were taking tunes that were pretty well known, and turning them into tight, jaunty, often comically-tinged soul jazz numbers that were very popular with the folks at the downtown clubs. As proof of that, the album features Lewis-arranged versions of many familiar favorites – including "Dark Eyes", "Come Back To Sorrento", "Greensleeves", and "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child". Also includes a few originals – like "We Blue It" and "Soul Mist". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oscar Peterson TrioBursting Out – With The All Star Big Band ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little record that has Oscar Peterson really pushing the fuller, stronger sound he started with his trio of Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen – a set that features additional backings by Ernie Wilkins behind the core sound of the piano combo! The mode here is in that "all soul" style of Peterson's huge-selling Verve albums from the time – but the addition of a larger group makes for a mode that's even fresher – because Oscar rarely used any larger backings, so the record's a real standout! Hearing the strength of the tracks, we're a bit surprised that Peterson never made more albums like this – because there seems to be added inspiration from Wilkins' presence, giving Oscar even more focus and drive on his solos. A rare outing, but a great one – with titles that include "Blues For Big Scotia", "Tricotism", "Manteca", "I'm Old Fashioned", "West Coast Blues", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "I Love You". RCA (Germany), Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Not the usual album you might expect from a group with a trio in the name – as there's no piano in the mix, and instead the album features some sparkling trumpet from the great Allan Botschinsky – heard here at the height of his youthful, modern powers! The combo's led by drummer Bjarne Rostvold, whose touch on the kit is superb – snapping and swinging at most moments, but often in really subtle ways – with a level of dexterity that we get to hear more strongly here than on some of Bjarne's sessions as a sideman. Also great is bassist Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen – no stranger to most, but already really captivating here at a young age – and as melodic as he is rhythmic, which really fills out the sound. Titles include "Greensleeves", "Tricotism", "S'Posin", "Ease It", "Squeeze Me", and "Perhaps". LP, Vinyl record album

Definitely something tasty from the Super Jazz Trio – a rare Japanese-only effort that has the combo joined by the mighty Art Farmer! Art plays flugelhorn on the date, and fits in wonderfully alongside the piano of Tommy Flanagan, bass of Reggie Workman, and drums of Joe Chambers – a group who often have slight edge to their playing, which seems to bring out the same in Farmer as well. Most numbers are standards, but taken in a nicely loose way – and there's a relaxed feeling to the session that's a nice change from some of the too-tight sessions of this type from the time. Titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Au Privave", "Blame It On My Youth", "My Heart Skips A Beat", and "Stablemates". LP, Vinyl record album

Pepper Adams is easily one of the hippest players you'll ever hear on the baritone sax – an artist who changed in great ways over the decades, and always seemed to deliver something special when he got a chance to record as a leader! That's definitely the case here – as Adams stretches out on these really long tracks – blowing his horn with the kind of longform imagination that you might hear on a tenor performance of this nature by Dexter Gordon or Johnny Griffin – on a rare Canadian live date with backing from the trio of pianist Tommy Banks! Banks is a great player – with a nice raw edge that really brings a lot out of Adams – and titles are all very long, with versions of "Patrice", "Oleo", "Civilization & Its Discontents", and "Three & One". A fantastically hard bossa nova jam led by the legendary Milton Banana – a man not only known as Joao Gilberto's favorite drummer, but also as one of the architects of bossa nova drumming and percussion! The album is full of non-stop drums and piano grooves, and it's a mostly uptempo treat all the way through. Milton B tipples his way across the tops of the drums in an amazingly light fashion, yet still manages to kick on the rhythm all the way through. The hard piano sound and Milton B's beats and rhythms made this album a legend – and really cleared the way for so many great bossa albums to come. Sonny ClarkSonny Clark Trio (Blue Note) ... LP
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint- ... $199.99
Classic trio material from pianist Sonny Clark – a talent who left our planet all too soon, but who managed to record quite a number of really great albums for Blue Note in the second half of the 50s! Clark's talents were always great in a group with horns, but he's equally wonderful on a trio date like this – and gets a chance to show off both his strong sense of rhythm, and some more lyrical modes that really make the album sparkle – playing here in a perfect lineup with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The set's easily one of the best straight trio sessions ever cut for Blue Note – tracks are longish, with a very hardbop groove – and titles include "Be Bop", "Two Bass Hit", "Tadd's Delight", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". A trio treasure from the incredible Sonny Clark – a rare non-Blue Note date from the late 50s, and a wonderful illustration of his powers on the piano! The setting is spare, but the sound is never sleepy – as Sonny's working here with Max Roach on drums and George Duvivier on bass – both of whom make for very lively compatriots in the trio – and help Sonny hit some fiercely flowing lines on piano! And apart from Sonny's great playing, the album's also a great showcase for his writing skills too, as nearly never tune's an original – with titles that include "Nica", "Sonia", "My Conception", "Minor Meeting", and "Blues Mambo". Also features a version of "Sonny's Crib" – mis-labeled here as "Sonny's Crip"! LP, Vinyl record album

Nat King ColeKing Cole Trio With Lester Young & Red Callender ... LP

A great collection of bop sides from 40s LA – tracks that ostensibly feature Cole on piano, jamming with Lester Young on tenor and Red Callender on bass! Oddly, no other players are listed in the notes – even though there's clearly a drummer and trumpeter on the session – so it's a bit hard to date the material, or figure out the actual source of the work. But we can say that Young's tone alone is more than worth the price of admission – beautifully firm and strong – blown in a way that rivals his best early performances for Verve, but perhaps even with a bit more grit and soul. Titles include "SM Blues", "Jammin With Lester", "Can't Get Started", "Body & Soul", and "Indiana". LP, Vinyl record album

Bill EvansTrio '65 ... LP
Verve, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $59.99
Fantastic Verve Records material from Bill Evans – a set that follows the no-nonsense trio style of his Riverside material, but which definitely shows the evolving Evans style of the 60s! The group here is a nicely mellow one – bassist Chuck Israels, whose sound is tremendous – and drummer Larry Bunker – a player you might know from percussion work on other albums, which seems to give him a very sensitive touch on the drum kit here! Both players have a dancing quality that goes far beyond strict rhythmic timekeeping – and this approach opens up Evans' solos in to a freer mode than on some of his early 60s sets. The result is a wonderful album that really transforms the tunes – as you'll hear on the set of tracks that include "Round Midnight", "Israel", "Elsa", and "How My Heart Sings". A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far more than the standard trio mode of the time – and much more in a triangulated exchange of energy that's filled with life and joy throughout! Side one begins with a 12 minute "West Side Story Medley" – one that starts slow, but really builds with excitement as the tune rolls on – and other tunes include a version of "My Babe", with some funky cello work by Eldee Young; a soul-stepping take on "Something You Got"; Ramsey's original "The Caves"; and versions of "People", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "The Shelter Of Your Arms". Strong work from the Peterson Trio's London House gig in Chicago in 1961 – material that offers some slightly longer than usual takes on the group's sound, especially on a few numbers that really let Oscar open up on the keys! The group here is the legendary combo with Ed Thigpen on drums and Ray Brown on bass – but on the album's long versions of "Sometimes I'm Happy", "In The Wee Small Hours" and "Chicago", it's Oscar's inventive work on the keys that really dominates the nearly 10 minute run of each track. ✨✧ Oscar Peterson with Clark TerryOscar Peterson Trio + One ... LP
Mercury, 1964. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Oscar Peterson's trio is augmented here by a famous guest – trumpeter Clark Terry, whose horn adds a nice bit of punctuation to the set, and makes the record a strong standout in the 60s catalogs of both players! The addition of Terry to the record is a great one – as Clark's rising fame at the time merges nicely with the popularity of the Peterson group – and since both players share a talent for mixing earthy moments with tighter playing, the whole thing comes off pretty darn nicely! Peterson's piano is supported by rhythm work from Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – and Terry not only plays trumpet and flugelhorn, but also vocalizes a slight bit too – sometimes at the same point he's playing his horn! Titles include "Mumbles", "Mack The Knife", "Jim", "Blues For Smedley", "Brotherhood Of Man", and "Incoherent Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

The second half of the legendary Jazz At Massey Hall performance from 1953 – a set that features the core rhythm trio, without Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie – a killer lineup that has Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums! The tunes are a bit shorter than on the quintet sides, but maybe that's because Powell can always pack so much into such a short space – and Mingus has plenty of sharp small group imagination here, while Roach is a young genius, really breaking out here too. Jazzaggression (Finland), 2022. Sealed ... $14.99 18.99
Christian Reim is a Norwegian jazz legend, with a legacy of recordings that stretches back to the 60s – but here, he presents new material with two different trios – both of whom have the pianist sounding even more vibrant than ever! The first half of the set features Harald Johnsen on bass and Jarle Vespestad on drums – working on original tunes by Reim that still have the modern edges of his early material, but also burst forth with a wonderfully striking sense of color – almost a lyricism that he never had before, and a great gift in his music! Those qualities seem to come out even more strongly on the second half, which features drums from Hakon Mjaset Johansen and bass from Ingebright Haker Flaten – the latter of whom we're used to hearing in a much more avant setting, but who really comes across with a bold sense of focus and power here, really driving the whole session forward in a great way. Titles include "Nina", "Polonese", "Dina", "O Jul Med Din Glede", and "The Little Girl From Guadeloupe". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins Brass/Sonny Rollins Trio ... LP
Verve, 1958. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Quite an unusual record for Sonny Rollins – but a great one too! At first glance the concept is a strange one – almost a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements – but oddly, the idea works, and works nicely – as Rollins' edgey solos cut through the heavy arrangements with ease, creating some angular counterpoint and a tight little space to make his own sound. The group was conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and the flipside of the album features Rollins playing in a small trio with the great Henry Grimes on bass (who also played with Rollins on some of his best sessions from the time!) and Charles Wright on drums. Titles include "Manhattan", "If You Were The Only Girl In the World", "Who Cares?", and "Far Out East". Originally issued on MGM/Metro – but this is the Verve pressing. LP, Vinyl record album

Teddy Wilson/Gerry MulliganTeddy Wilson Trio & Gerry Mulligan Quartet With Bob Brookmeyer & Bill Evans At Newport ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Two different sides of Verve Records in the 50s – one modern, one a bit more traditional – and both represented in live material from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957! Side one features a stunning live performance from pianist Teddy Wilson – working in a tight trio with Milt Hinton on bass and Spec Powell on drums – and really blowing away any conceptions we might have had about Wilson being aging or flowery at the time. Instead, he's got a sharp edge and command of the keys that's amazing – and which almost seems to have a bit more bite than usual in this concert setting. Titles include "Stompin At The Savoy", "Basin Street Blues", and "Airmail Special" – and Gerry Mulligan joins the group on baritone for a reading of "Sweet Georgia Brown". Mulligan then takes off with his own group, in a completely different format – no piano at all, just beautiful work from Joe Benjamin on bass and Dave Bailey on drums – and sublime sounds from Bob Brookmeyer's valve trombone, which is a perfect match for Gerry's deep tones. The group plays long takes on "My Funny Valentine" and "Utter Chaos". LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked 80s session from trombonist Curtis Fuller – and a great one too – a record that really returns the player to the powerful presence we first loved in his albums of the late 50s and early 60s! Fuller's the leadoff solo instrument throughout – working here with backing from the Roma Trio of Danilo Rea on piano, Enzo Pietropaoli on bass, and Roberto Gatto on drums – all playing with that careful, classic vibe that maybe made the Italian scene in the 80s one of the richest on the continent. Curtis blows boldly, even at mellower moments – often phrasing more like a trumpet than a typical trombonist – and serving up lots of soulful sounds in the process. The set features a sublime reading of "Naima", plus "Blue Bossa", "Afternoon In Paris", "Red's Delights", and "Impressions". LP, Vinyl record album

A great little session – and a meeting that was one of the best things to happen to the Oscar Peterson trio during the 50s! Stan's tone fits perfectly with the group here – and his playing next to the guitar of Herb Ellis recalls many of the fine strengths of the early 50s Getz sides with Jimmy Raney – although somehow coming across with even more depth and imagination here – probably a result of the more sophisticated approach to productions handled by Verve! Peterson's no slouch, either – but Stan's the man who really makes the session sparkle – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Tour's End", "Bronx Blues", "I Was Doing All Right", and "I'm Glad There's You". Groundbreaking work from the legendary Ahmad Jamal – not just in his own career, but in live jazz in general! The album's a classic recording of Jamal's trio with Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums – captured at the Pershing Lounge on the south side of Chicago, where Jamal was clearly wowing the crowd with his amazing talents on the piano. The groove here is sublimely fluid and soulful – clearly the next wave of expression on the piano in the 50s, and as important to the Chicago scene as Bill Evans was to that of New York at the time. The recording quality is wonderful – clear enough to capture the subtleties of Crosby's amazing bass, and the lightly tippling sound of Fournier's drums – and titles include a classic extended reading of "Poinciana", plus "What's New", "But Not For Me", and "No Greater Love". Argo, 1959. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite a rare thing for a jazz album of the time – nearly 60 minutes of music on one disc, something that was almost unheard-of in the days of 30 minute sessions! As the notes explain, the whole thing sounded so good that the engineer let the tape run more than he might in a usual set – allowing Ramsey and his trio with Redd Holt and Eldee Young to open up on a few tracks, taking 3 of the numbers into the 7 minute range. Other tunes are shorter, but equally imaginative, and titles include strong versions of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Love For Sale", "I Love Paris", "Song Of India", "Consider The Source", and "The Ruby & The Pearl". LP, Vinyl record album
(Gold label Argo stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has splits on the seams and light surface wear.)

✨✧ Billy TaylorBilly Taylor Trio At The London House ... LP
ABC, 1956. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mellow and wonderful work from Billy Taylor – caught here in a setting that feels much more relaxed and unrestrained than some of his other 50s outings! The group's his classic trio with Percy Brice on drums and Earl May on bass – and Billy's incredibly inventive on the keys, working through a long original entitled "Midnight Piano", as well as great readings of "The London House", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Stella By Starlight", and "Gone With The Wind". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear. Vinyl has a short click on "Stella By Starlight", but is great otherwise.)

✨✧ Ray BryantMe & The Blues (Alone With The Blues/Ray Bryant Trio) ... LP
Prestige, 1957/Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Two excellent Bryant sets, recorded for Prestige, though he's more well known for his Cadet sides. The first disc of the set is a very striking album – one of Bryant's most noteworthy of the time! The album features Ray playing solo piano – quite unusual for the period, as most piano jazz records, especially his, were at least cut in a trio format. Ray's wonderfully unfettered here – hitting grooves with a level of expression and sophistication that far surpasses most of his other records. The intimate time on the keys never gets hokey or overindulgent – but it does let Ray open up and show a side that we've rarely heard on wax. Titles include "Stocking Feet", "Blues #3", "Joy", "Me & The Blues", and "My Blues". The Ray Bryant Trio is another wonderful early side, featuring Ike Isaacs and Specs Wright in a trio alongside Bryant, performing sparkling renditions of standards and a couple originals, that are still infused with his bluesy groove. Titles include "Golden Earrings", "Angel Eyes", "Blues Changes", "Splittin'", "Django", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Daahoud" and "Sonar". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s green label pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, light splash stains, and a small sticker in back.)

✨✧ Nat King ColeNat King Cole & The Nat King Cole Trio ... LP
Savoy, Late 30s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection – one that offers up the earliest work by Nat King Cole – before he even recorded for Decca or Capitol! The music here was all recorded in Hollywood, when Nat was fresh on the scene – and a number of titles were never issued at all! The group features Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass – and some tracks have extra vocals from Maxine Johnson. LP, Vinyl record album
(1989 pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Kenny DrewIntroducing The Kenny Drew Trio – New Faces New Sounds ... LP
Blue Note, 1953. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great early album from the 10" LP years of Blue Note Records – Kenny Drew's entry in the label's excellent "new faces" series – and one that really shows the pianist at his best! We like the work here even better than some of Drew's slightly-later sides for the Riverside label – as he's got this wonderful mix of bop tightness with the lyricism that would grace his music in years to come – getting superb support in a trio that features Curley Russell on bass and Art Blakey on drums. Titles include "Gloria", "Be My Love", "Yesterdays", "Everything Happens To Me", "Stella By Starlight", and "Drew's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese EMI pressing, BNJ-71002 – with obi and insert. Obi has a small rip, but this is a great copy!)
