Great work from this ultra-hip trio – an amazing combination of keyboards, bass, and drums – served up in styles that are rooted in funk and jazz, but go to so many other places as well! The drums crackle with a quality schooled in 70s breaks and beats, stripped down to their core – and the mix of keyboards echo a range of innovators from CTI to Money Mark, with a spacious flow that leaves plenty of room for the basslines to drive the tunes! Other instrumentation includes bits of guitar and percussion from the group, plus some guest tenor and strings as well. The stunning debut of this ultra-hip trio – not to be confused with the similarly-named Brazilian group Azymuth, but instead a British combo who really helped find new ways of expression in an ECM setting! All three artists here had already made waves on their scene in the years before – pianist John Taylor, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and vocalist Norma Winstone – the last of whom often uses her voice as more of an instrument than an conveyor of words, which is an approach that sounds beautiful here. There's an open, airy quality to the record that's completely sublime – and which is an especially fantastic setting for Taylor's piano, who also delivers some great electronics – matched with really thoughtful expressions from Kenny Wheeler, whose sound here is incredible. One of the best jazz rock combos to grace the Harvest label in the early 70s – a German trio who've got plenty of proggish inflections, and who really serve up some great keyboards and guitar over heavy drums! There's a bit of vocals on the set, natch, but the best tunes feature lots of jamming on a variety of keyboards that include moog, Hammond, and electric piano – spun out in a really pulsating set of rhythms. Rock break fans should find plenty of interesting bits on the set – and titles include "Last Dance", "Maze", "Lucky Girl", "Roundabout", "Million Dollars", "Triangle", "School Days", and "Flashback". Of the classic "big names get together for a session" albums on Verve, the best ones always seem to be the ones with one of the "Sonnys" in the list of leaders. This one compiles titles from the Sonny Side Up album – which featured Stitt and Rollins, plus others from 1957 sessions in which Diz played with one or the other player. The set's a beautiful batch of long tracks with lots of blowing room, and a deep soulful hardbop groove that you don't always hear on Verve. The rhythm section for all groups is comprised of Ray Bryant, Tommy Bryant, and Charlie Persip – who are part of the reason for the magnanimous groove of the set – and titles include "After Hours", "Con Alma", "Haute Mon", "Sumphin", "Weatleigh Hall", "I Know That You Know", and "The Eternal Triangle". A great collection of early Herbie Hancock work for Blue Note Records – done in his pre-electric years, but with a sound that's already ahead of the pack – as Herbie's mixing modernism with 60s soul jazz – alongside players that include Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley and Joe Henderson on tenor, Hubert Laws on flute, Thad Jones on flugelhorn, Grachan Moncur on trombone, Ron Carter and Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins and Tony Williams on drums! A really unique little record from Herbie Hancock – one that's almost completely improvised over Latin percussion! The setup is quite spare – and quite different than Herbie's other Blue Note work – and the group features improvised backgrounds by bassist Paul Chambers and 2 Latin percussionists, Willie Bobo and Osvaldo "Chihuahau" Martinez. Herbie only wrote simple sketches for the songs on the album, and most of the work on the tracks was done live, spontaneously, in the studio – creating a very free groove that never goes too far out, but which is far more adventurous than usual. One of the best later moments from soundtrack giant Alfred Newman – a stunning score for a star-studded disaster film at the start of the 70s! Newman's still got some of his older sense of orchestration here, but also gets a bit leaner for the modern age too – bringing in some groovier elements to fit different characters and themes in the film – and nicely balancing out the dramatic elements with some lighter touches too. That's Ken Rhodes, not Fender Rhodes – but the acoustic pianist is more than funky enough on his own – even without any electricity in the mix! The set's got this wonderful rhythm duo – drummer George Greene and bassist Joachim Knauer – who often come on with this really full, frenzied approach – leaping forward along with Ken's tightly comping style on piano, so that the tunes almost hit this funk-modal style that's really unique – and completely sublime all the way through! A few mellower moments round things out nicely – and give the album a depth that recalls some of the Jazz Hip Trio records from the European scene of the same time.
