Lucy Ann PolkLucy Ann Polk (10 inch LP) ... LP
Trend/Terasima (Japan), 1954. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 44.99
An obscure pre-Mode date from vocalist Lucy Ann Polk – and a set that's got a wonderful LA 50s feel! Backings here are by the Dave Pell Octet – with Pell on tenor, Ronny Lang on alto, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, and Claude Williamson on piano – and arrangements are by Wes Hensel and Shorty Rogers, nice and jazzy throughout! Lucy's approach to the tunes is light and lovely, but she also burns with a bit of a deeper fire at times too – a bluer tone underneath the charm up top. Titles include "But Beautiful", "Imagination", "It Could Happen To You", "It's Always You", and "Darn That Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Claude ThornhillClaude Thornhill & His Orchestra Play The Great Jazz Arrangements Of Gerry Mulligan & Ralph Aldrich (10 inch LP) ... LP
Trend, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A classic 10" album that documents the great talents of Claude Thornhill – presented here in a batch of tracks arranged by Gerry Mulligan and Ralph Aldridge, often in a mix of bop, swing, and larger orchestrations! Soloist here include Gene Quill, Dick Sherman, and Aldridge himself – working on both tenor and clarinet. Titles include "Jeru", "Poor Little Rich Girl", "Five Brothers", "Rose Of The Rio Grande", "Mambo Nothing", "Family Affair", and "Adios". LP, Vinyl record album

Claude ThornhillDream Stuff (10 inch LP) ... LP
Trend, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $14.99
Mellow and moody work from the great Claude Thornhill – an album of lush orchestrations, but done with some of the sophisticated jazz touches of the 50s west coast scene! The feel is certainly in keeping with the title, but mostly in an evocative way, and never too sleepy – and Thornhill's piano echoes out over the backdrops nicely, with a slightly modern edge. The whole thing comes together like a larger suite of tracks, and titles include "Summer Is Gone", "Puttin & Takin", "You Go To My Head", "Adios", "To Each His Own", and "By A Rippling Stream". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a split bottom seam, splitting on the top seam, some surface wear & aging.)

✨✧ Jerry FieldingJerry Fielding Plays A Dance Concert (10 inch LP) ... LP
Trend, 1953/1954. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Great early jazz work from Jerry Fielding – an artist who's probably much better known for his soundtracks of the 60s and 70s, but who sounds equally great here in a big band setting of the 50s! Fielding's style is heavy on modes blossoming in the LA scene of the time – modern, swinging, tight ensemble playing, but often with standout soloists like Conrad Gozzo, Buddy Collette, and Gerald Wiggins. The style isn't so much "dance" as it is swinging big band work – and titles include "Young Man's Fancy", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Song Of The Bayou", "Carefree", and "Cheerful Little Earful". ✨✧ Bent WindSussex ... LP
Trend/Guerssen (Spain), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Heavy psych from the Toronto scene of the 60s – a record that died instantly after it was recorded, but only because it was years ahead of its time! Bent Wind are incredible from the very first note – playing with this intensity that's really hard to sum up in words, often with guitar lines to rival the best of the new hard rock generation in the UK – but lyrics that are moodier and muddier, and which give these guys an almost spooky sort of feel! There's plenty of power on the record throughout – and a youthful freshness that comes through right away, even after all these years – on titles that include "Hate", "The Lions", "Goin To The City", "Riverside", "Mystify", "Touch Of Red", and "Sacred Cows". Jazzclub (France), 1981. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
Drummer Kenny Clarke was one of the key American players to make the move overseas in the postwar years, which resulted in some excellent recordings from the late 50s onward – a trend that's continued here as Kenny plays with a number of key overseas musicians – including Maurice Vander on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, Roger Guerin on trumpet, and Marc Fosset on guitar – on titles that also feature some tenor from Bob Garcia, and piano from Walter Davis Jr on one track too. ✨✧ Duke EllingtonEllington At Newport ... LP
Columbia, 1956. Sealed ... $24.99
One of the first albums to ever issue recordings made at the Newport Jazz Festival – quite a big hit, and the beginning of a real trend in jazz! The set's also some great work by Duke – free to perform in a setting that's not bound by some of the time restrictions of earlier years, which lets him offer up three long tracks with a great deal of sophistication over previous recordings. Titles include "Jeep's Blues", "Diminuendo & Crescendo In Blue", and "Newport Jazz Festival Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mort GarsonZodiac Cosmic Sounds (180 gram gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Elektra/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Zodiac never sounded so spooky – and the album's one of the first in a trend that explored astrology with funky musical backings! The music for the set was put together by moogy maestro Mort Garson – then making a transition from being a straight easy arranger in the early 60s, to more of a tripped-out pop-psychedelic artist of the latter part of the decade. Garson brings a nice funky undercurrent to the set – in a style that's similar to the work of David Axelrod, but which also uses a bit more electric instrumentation. Each track features a spoken bit on a Zodiac sign – written by Jacques Wilson, and spoken by Cyrus Faryar – and the album also features some nice moog work by Paul Beaver! Titles include "Aries", "Taurus", "Cancer", "Leo", and so on! (P.S.: The label says "Must Be Played In The Dark!") LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles JayeMiles ... LP
Island, 1987. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Miles Jaye once played the cop in the Village People, but don't hold that against him – because by the time of this debut set, he'd really crafted his style as a soul singer – which makes the record a key part of a new trend in male soul for the late 80s! Jaye's got a cool, sophisticated style – one that gets some nice warm touches on the arrangement and production, which include lots of touches from Miles himself – plus help from luminaries like Dexter Wansel, Hubert Eaves, and Branford Marsalis. Titles include "Lazy Love", "Special Thing", "I've Been A Fool For You", "Desiree", "Happy 2 Have U", "Come Home", "I Cry For You", and "Let's Start Love Over". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Buddy MilesBicentennial Gathering Of The Tribes ... LP
Casablanca, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Buddy Miles hits the Bicentennial, and he's giving a nod to Native Americans on the cover – although a few years late of that trend in comparison to efforts by other singers of his generation! The album's also an obscure date for Casablanca – one that has Miles in smoother soul territory than before, but still with a bit more edge than other artists on the disco powerhouse label. Buddy produced himself, and the tunes are an updated version of the rock/soul vibe laid down by Miles on the early Mercury albums – taken to territory that's a bit smoother 70s, yet still with strong crossover appeal. Titles include "Inflation", "Now's The Time", "Where You Gonna Run To Lady", "Grecian Lady", "Won't You Be My Friend", and "Wake Me Shake Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SpinnersSpinners ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from The Spinners – one that has the Detroit vocal group making a hip trip to the Philly scene – picking up a whole new sound and rich new energy in the process! A few years later, working in Philly studios would be common for many artists – but this self-titled Spinners set really helped launch the trend – and for good reason, too – given the strength of the production and arrangements from the legendary Thom Bell! Bell's at his best here – helping the group reach whole new territory in their wonderful harmonies – and backing them up with some of the best musicians the Sigma Sound Studios had to offer. The album's overflowing with hits – like "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" and "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" – but it's also got some excellent lesser-known material too, like the extended "I Could Never (Repay Your Love)" and "We Belong Together". Other cuts include "Ghetto Child", "Just You & Me Baby", "I'll Be Around", and "Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant album that follows on the trend that was begun by Sinatra and Tony Bennett – one that takes strong jazz backings from Count Basie to push a singer past the usual pop format! Sammy didn't always get backing this strong – and the album's got Quincy Jones handling the arrangements for Basie in the same mode the he used on the Sinatra/Basie sides for Reprise. Titles include "The Girl From Ipanema", "She's A Woman", "New York City Blues", "Work Song", and "Blues For Mr Charlie" – and the album even features Sammy doing a bit of tap dancing! ✨✧ Eric DolphyBerlin Concerts ... LP
Inner City, 1961. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work by Dolphy – as essential to his catalog as any of his albums on Prestige from the same time! Although Dolphy broke plenty of musical barriers in the studio, to our ears, it was always in a live setting that he sounded best – freely exploring the kind of space his playing opened up, hitting notes that were more soulful and spiritual than many that he ever recorded on his studio sides. This set is a perfect example of that trend – as Dolphy's working here with a strong straight jazz combo, one that includes the great Benny Bailey on trumpet, in a set that features familiar tunes, turned into haunting explorations of Dolphy's new jazz idiom. One of the highlights is an incredible 15 minute version of Randy Weston's "Hi Fly", with Dolphy doing great work on flute – and other tunes include "Hot House", "Geewee", "When Lights Are Low", "I'll Remember April", and "The Meeting". ✨✧ Everly BrothersRoots ... LP
Warner, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really nice little session from Terry Gibbs – a rare one-off album for Impulse, and a straight jazz record that stands out from some of Terry's more gimmick-oriented albums of the 60s! Gibbs plays the vibes beautifully here – hitting with this sense of touch that really shines through – a really personal element that grabs us almost more than on earlier albums. The group's got a light, easygoing swing – one that really lets Terry take the lead at most points – and players include Kenny Burrell on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. There's a few nice whimsical numbers on the set – showing Terry's (and the 60s in general) trend towards using the vibes in new ways and for new grooves – and titles include "Oge", "El Fatso", "Take It From Me", "Gee Dad It's A Deagan", and "8 LBs 10 oz". In 1994 when everyone seemed to be turning hardcore, Common Sense wasn't having it – and gave the world this superb second album that formed a key part of his soon-to-be huge legacy! The album's very near and dear to our Chicago-born hearts – and is filled with introspective tales of growing up and living on the South Side, given perfect support by the production of No ID – a real overlooked hero of this generation! The album was made with little regard to trends of the time, and that's given it a timeless quality that really holds on over the years – maybe even more so than some of Common's later, bigger records. The set features two guest appearances by Y-Not aka Twilight Tone – and titles include "I Used To Love HER", "Book Of Life", "Chapter 13", "Nuthin' To Do", "In My Own World (Check The Method)", "Maintaining", "Communism", "Watermelon", "Thisisme", and "Sum Sh*t I Wrote". The album follows August Darnell's pattern of blending 20s retro styles with early 80s dancefloor trends, touched with elements of the exotic – in keeping with the record's title – but the set's also filled with tunes that show that Kid Creole had a more soulful side, with a lot more to offer than just a novelty act. BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $34.99 48.99
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and the titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more. 14 tracks on 3LPs. Now Again, Mid 1970s. Sealed 2LP + Book ... $49.99
It's easy to wake up with grooves this great – a searing back of 70s Afro Rock gems that are also surprisingly funky, too! The tunes here do a wonderful job of mixing psych currents and headier rhythms – a great blend of the burning Afro Funk trends that were happening in Nigeria at the time, but with much richer, trippier work on the guitar and vocals – and some of the freaky, fuzzy basslines too! If some Afro Funk acts drew strong influence from the sharp soul of James Brown, these groups all seem to drink deep from the same musical well as Funkadelic at their freaked-out early best – which means that they've got no trouble throwing in a psych guitar riff alongside soulful vocals and funky rhythms – all with a sound that's completely sublime. As with the great first volume in this series, this edition comes with a special heavy book on the music – filled with detailed notes and lots of photos – alongside a great set of tracks that include "Wake Up You" by Waves, "Love" by Question Mark, "Baby Rock" by Jay U Experience, "Life In Cannan" by Ceejebs, "Who Made The World" by The Identicals, "Awa Lani Arawa" by Kukumbas, "Life Will Move" by The Believers, "The Feelings" by Tony Grey & The Black 7, "I Want A Break Thru" by The Hykkers, and "In The Jungle (voc)" by The Hygrades. By this point in his career, Ray Barretto certainly was Indestructible – one of the biggest Latin leaders of his day, working at the forefront of new trends and new sounds! This fact is wonderfully displayed by the front cover, which shows Ray unbuttoning his shirt and taking off his Clark Kent-styled glasses to reveal a Superman costume underneath – and apart from this easy gimmick, the album itself is a straight ahead Latin jammer, with no tricks, no silliness – just a perfect early 70s salsa sound! A killer set of hardbop from the legendary Hank Mobley – recorded during the initial Mobley run at Blue Note, and a keen document of his amazing power on the tenor sax! The album's got a tightness that's almost impossible to believe – a summation of all the best bop trends of the 50s, rolled into a freewheeling and soulful expression, guided by Mobley's always-sharp ear for a groove. An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album is Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating record that stands up with some of his best work, and bucks all late 70s trends and cliches in pop, soul and funk! In some ways this is one of our favorite Prince records, as it has a kind of intimacy that was lacking on later sets – or maybe because the hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover" has such a mad groove! "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" has the sly sound that would run throughout the rest of Prince's better work for years to come – and Chaka Khan would later cover "I Feel for You", and hit large with it in the 80s. One of the weirdest, wildest albums from percussionist Big Black – a set that stretches out with a vibe that's a lot trippier and jazzier at times than some of his other work! Part of the album's strength comes from the arrangements – which are partly handled by Phil Moore, an artist who created all these other great album projects in the late 60s – often, like this one, a cool mix of exotic currents with new trends in funk and jazz – served up here by a lineup that features Moore on piano, Herman Riley and Chester Washington on tenors, Bruce Langhorn and the mysterious Brother Soul on guitars, and Thurman Green on trombone. Curtis Peagler adds in some alto and flute, and Owen Marshall plays the wild hose-a-phone, plus a host of percussion instruments too – while Big Black himself handles congas and a bit of vocals. Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Mongo's biggest records of the early 70s – and an important early side for Atlantic Records! Moving to Atlantic from Columbia, Mongo hipped things up even more – picking up on important trends in soul, rock, and the Latin underground of the time. Atlantic gave Mongo the freedom to open things up a bit more – and fill his grooves with a bit more funk, jazz, and Chicano soul than heard on earlier albums. The result is a wonderful blend of styles that crackles with electricity from track to track. Arrangements are by Mongo's longtime partner, Marty Sheller – and titles include "Hip Hug Her", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Hold On, I'm Coming", "On Broadway", and "In A Gadda Da Vida", which is a real trip! ✨✧ Soft MachineSix ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully burning double-length set from Soft Machine – proof that the group were really at the height of their powers during the early 70s – magically blending together jazz, rock, and fusion into one soaringly spacey new sound! The work here is a key fore-runner of countless trends to come – including recent keyboard-heavy work on the cosmic club scene – particularly 4 Hero and the generation of others that sprang up in their wake. Soft Machine have a similar British bent for blending styles here – using jazz elements that are on a par with their best contemporaries in the straighter part of that genre – but fusing them together with a more pulsating approach to rhythm that pushes all the solo bits wonderfully! There's a fair bit of groove heavy tracks here that still sound as fresh today as when they were recorded – and the album features great drums from John Marshall, keyboards from Mike Ratledge, bass from Hugh Hopper, and a wide variety of reeds from Karl Jenkins. The album's a rich tapestry of long and short tracks, all woven together – and titles include "All White", "Between", "Riff", "EPV", "Stumble", "5 From 13", "Riff II", "The Soft Weed Factor", and "Chloe & The Pirates". ✨✧ VariousShake – 60s Brit Mod Nuggets ... LP
Strawberry (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The title's certainly got it right – as the set's overflowing with killer UK tracks from a time when the scene was heavily influenced by American soul, jazz, blues, and R&B – served up here on a host of singles that go way past the bigger names of that generation, and which really show the diversity and complexity of the underground groups who were making London hum in the mid 60s! And despite a strong influence from America, most of these acts aren't just aping music from our shores, and instead are already taking it to new and exciting places – using core elements in very different ways, at a level that would end up being a path forward for prog, psych, and other styles to come! The limited 2LP set features 34 tracks in all – and titles include "Oh Yeah" by The Others, "Unchain My Heart" by Trendbender Band, "Work Song" by James Royal, "I Still Want You" by Mickey Finn & The Blue Men, "Things She Says" by The In Crowd, "Crawdaddy Simone" by The Syndicats, "That Driving Beat" by The Favourite Sons, "I Take What I Want" by The Artwoods, "Number One" by Stormsville Shakers, "See Saw" by The Union, "Ain't Love Good" by Lucas & The Mike Cotton Sound, "Gotta Brand New Man" by Barry St Loun, "Last Night" by Laurel Aitken & The Soul Men, "Turn On Your Lovelight" by Wynder K Frog, "Something For Nothing" by Carl Douglas & The Big Stampede, "Good Lovin Never Hurt" by The Soul Brothers, "Hold On" by Ruperts People, and "She's A Girl" by The Attraction. New Wave hits Brazil – in case you couldn't tell by the album's op-art cover, and Dusek's sunglassed trendoid image on the front! The album seems to be relatively tongue in cheek – although it's a bit hard to tell if you don't speak the language – and titles include "Rock Da Cachorra", "Barrados No Baile", "Nao Minta Vovo", "Cabelos Negros", and "Enfant Terrible". ✨✧ Keith MurrayHe's Keith Murray – radio advance version ... LP
Def Jam, 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Nice, nice, nice New York hip hop from Keith Murray – his one and only full length on Def Jam! The album features production by Clark Kent, Rockwilder, Pete Rock and others and it's just the kind of no nonsense street hop we love around here. Keith rocks it like Nas in a way – he's all about soulful introspection with rhymes that go way beyond call-and-response hoopty rockers and party blasters. His style on the best cuts are definitely of the hard street mentality, but Keith has a genuine thoughtfulness that makes him a lot more complicated than the typical street rhymer – and bely his reputation as a violent hothead. The beats are tight and carefully crafted, and catchy enough to get play with the commercial jams. It's the kind of album that will still sound nice years from now – hardly a trendy concession to be found. Cuts include the great single "Candi Bar", "Carnage", "Oh My Goodness", "Christina", "Say Whaatt" featuring Redman, "Child Of The Streets" (Man Child)", "On Smash" with Busta Rhymes and more, plus some sharp skits with Jamie Foxx. ✨✧ RegrelhCants Dels Trobadors – La Douceur D'un Son Nouvel ... LP
Ventadorn/Dizonord (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A weird and wonderful little record – one that combines noisy industrial moments with acoustic folksy elements – all in a way that's not unlike the direction Current 93 would take later on in the 80s! Regrelh somehow manage to evoke both a primitive pagan past and an eerie apocalyptic future – working in some of the same genre-crossing styles as the hipper side of their French scene a few years before – but with a vibe that's completely their own, and completely stunning throughout! The vocals at times are almost medieval, yet the record also uses guitar and electronics too – which makes for a stunning blend of modes that's unlike anything else recorded at the time. As with most French underground work of the time, the record's very much in its own space apart from trends in the UK or US – as you'll hear on titles that include "Esmai", "Del Sieu Tort Farai Esmenda", "Pois Tals Saber Mi Sortz E'M Creis", and "Elogi De La Guerra". ✨✧ Slum VillageTrinity – Past, Present, & Future (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Capitol/Ne'Astra, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
This is the Slums' biggest outing so far without the full participation of Jay Dee – but never fear, Jay shows up here on a few tracks, and you also get beats by Hi Tek and others. The tracks are mostly on the short side, moving the flow along at a consistent clip – and the beats are the nice kind of tight, minimal synth bumps. There's also some sweet, soulful touches not unlike the ones we love so much on the best Blackalicious tracks. Pure hip hop that sounds comfortably new, but without any concessions to current trends! Tracks include "Tainted" and "Star" with Dwele, "Insane", "Slumber", "Let's", "S.O.U.L.", "Love U Hate", "Unisex", "La La", "All-Ta-Ment", "Get Live", "What Is This", "Hoes", "Disco", "Fall In Love", and more. 23 in all, including skits and interludes. ✨✧ VariousPyramid Pieces 2 – Modern Jazz Australia 1969 to 1980 ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great look at a scene that was incredibly strong in the 70s, but almost a secret to the rest of the world – given that most of the records here got wide distribution in Australia, but on labels who had no connection to the rest of the global market! Australian jazz had already gotten going well into the 50s – but during the time in this stretch, local musicians were really coming into their own – embracing modal jazz and more open-ended soloing – but also in a way that wasn't slavish to American or European trends either – which makes so much of the work here such an amazingly fresh discovery! There's a majesty to this music that you wouldn't expect if you didn't know the scene that well – a sense of pride and power that's amazing, and which makes this collection stand together wonderfully as a testament to this great moment in music. Titles include "Circles" by Allan Zavod, "Valley Of The Tweed" by Bob Bertles Moontrane, "Kuri Monga Nuie" by Bruce Cale, "Whirlpool" by Charlie Munro, "What The Thunder Said" by Out To Lunch, and "Number One" by Ted Vining.
