✨✧ Tom HarrellTotal! (aka Aurora) ... LP
Pinnacle, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A killer early groover from trumpeter Tom Harrell – proof that he was a killer right from the get-go! The album's got some sweet funky cuts with a warm soulful sound – kind of halfway between Freddie Hubbard on CTI, and some of the more organic sounds on Muse in the 70s – handled by a group that includes Tom on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Barry Finnerty on guitar, Mike Wolff on electric piano, Lenny White on drums, and Muhammad Abdullah on lots of cool percussion! Titles include "While There's Time", "The Water's Edge", "On The Roof", "Aurora", and "Outdoor Cafe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s issue. Cover has a faint sticker spot and a light crimp from manufacturing at the top right.)

✨✧ SadeParadise (ext mix, extra beats)/Super Bien Total (ext mix) ... 12-inch
Epic, 1988. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A long mix of Sade's excellent groover "Paradise" – a warmly bubbling tune that features her great vocals cascading over the top of gently percolating rhythms! There's a definite dancefloor groove here – but one that's still laidback and mellow – maybe not as jazzy as before, but still better than most of what was going on in the mainstream at the time! "Super Bien Total" is plenty jazzy, though – almost a bit of R&B fusion at times – with great keyboards and sax, all grooving together in instrumental interplay! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(US reissue in a plain black sleeve.)

✨✧ DJ ShadowTotal Breakdown – Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era 1992 to 1996 ... LP
Reconstruction Productions, Early/Mid 90s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A great set of archival DJ Shadow instros from the early-to-mid 90s – from back when his primary means of production was the Akai MPC sampler – along with his endless arsenal of vinyl and limitless creative inspiration! This is formative, but essential material for fans of classic Shadow. It's a superior follow up to the 4 Track Era compilation, and a solid blueprint for his very best work to come! This is all previously unreleased, and it was produced from 1992 to 1996 – which is the period that beat heads and leftfield hip hop production historians outta know culminated in the release of the classic Endtroducing album. That said, this is not a set of Endtroducing leftovers – it's strong, original and legacy-building instrumental work from a crucial period – assembled by the man himself! 22 tracks on the 2LP version. Includes "Intropy (Original Version)", "Vee In Detroit", "Alright", "Don't Try It", "Falling Up", "Aye", "Britty But Magic", "Atmospheric Disturbances", "Quickstep", "Freddi's Popcorn", "From The Old School", "Mystical With Solo", "Fast Rap Fanfare" and more. ✨✧ JJ JohnsonTotal JJ Johnson ... LP
RCA, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A further chapter in the big band years of JJ Johnson – heard here at a point when JJ was pushing his ensemble even more than before, with a fluid groove that almost matches the energy of similar groups on MPS at the time! There's a real undercurrent of hipness going on in the record – a quality that's not content to ape bigger band modes of earlier years, and instead finds a whole new space in sound – a relatively lean quality, but one that still uses the added players to create some magnificent qualities in sound – all to support the well-blown lead solo work by Johnson. There's a nice groove on most numbers, and the album features some especially nice reeds from Jerome Richardson and Frank Wess. Johnson handled arrangements, and titles include "Short Cake", "Space Walk", "Little Dave", and "Euro #1". LP, Vinyl record album

A great bass-heavy groover from The Gap Band – pulled off one of their best albums ever, Gap Band IV! The cut's got some really great funky bits on the bottom – acoustic piano wrapped around some more electric rhythms, in a blend that keeps the track as soulful as it is catchy! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Total Experience, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Mean, lean grooves from The Gap Band – a legendary batch of mainstream funk from the end of the 70s – and a record that really has the trio working at the top of their game! There's a wonderful balance here between funky numbers and mellow ones – the latter of which really help pace the record nicely, giving it a depth that takes the group way beyond the cliches of some of their contemporaries, and firmly establishing the Gap Band as one to watch for the 80s! Titles include the massive "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up & Dance" – with its classic "Oops Upside Your Head" refrain – plus "Who Do You Call", "No Hiding Place", "Steppin Out", "You Are My High", and "Party Lights". ✨✧ Gap BandGap Band VII ... LP
Total Experience, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sweet electro funk from The Gap Band – a group who are still grooving strong here, hitting the best of their Total Experience modes! The trio's mighty tight throughout – and their familiar funk is augmented by some electro touches that definitely keep things fresh – and we mean that in the best mid-80s use of the word! A bit of an old school influence comes into the vocals at points – which are spoken as much as sung on some cuts – and as always, The Gap Band really show their strength with the kind of catchy chorus that works great with a bassy groove. Titles include a great ballad reworking of "Going In Circles" – plus the groovers "Lil Red Funkin Hood", "Automatic Brain", "Desire", "Bumpin Gum People", and "I Know We'll Make It". ✨✧ Yarbrough & PeoplesBe A Winner ... LP
Total Experience, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A winning batch of modern soul from Yarbrough & Peoples – synthy duet soul, bits of funk, and some sweety sultry groovers, too! Y&P do their thing in a number of modes, and that fairly expansive approach to the 80s R&B sound really sets them apart from many of their peers. On one level, the synths and period production touches are kind of slick, but there's enough of a bubbling funky underbelly to give it some grit. Alisa Peoples can deliver a sultry coo or powerhouse lead with equal success, and Calvin Yarbrough is a charismatic partner. "Don't Waste Your Time", "I'm Ready To Jam", "I'll Be There", "I Only Love You", "Be A Winner", "The Power", "Who Said That", "I Gave My All (To You)" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Jacques Brel, Mort Shuman, Elly Stone, Joe MasiellJacques Brel Is Alive & Well & Living In Paris – Original Film Soundtrack ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $3.99
The film soundtrack version of this famous 60s musical, which was based around the sounds of Belgian singer Jacques Brel. The film version shares many similarities to the broadway one – translations by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman, vocals by Shuman and Elly Stone – but the overall sound is quite different, as the versions presented here are more subtle, less campy, possibly due to the freer range of expression allowed to the actors on a film soundstage. Plus, this version also includes a few of Brel's best songs that were left out of the original show – making for a total of 26 titles that include "The Bulls", "Sons Of", "The Desperate Ones", "Amsterdam", "The Statue", "Brussels", "Funeral Tango", "Bachelors Dance", "Carousel", and "Next". If you want Brel in English, this may well be the best way to get it – as nearly all other English language versions of his work (by Scott Walker, Marc Almond, and others) came from these translations. Varese, 1981. Sealed ... $119.99
Totally classic work from John Carpenter – and maybe one of the greatest horror/slasher soundtracks ever! Halloween was already pretty darn great – but here, Carpenter pushes it even further – using all the best elements of the first – including the incredible theme – in ways that go even further, and which shake off any schlocky moments and turn into a total creepfest overall! The keyboards and electronics are wonderful – done with frequent partner Alan Howarth – and the sense of spacing and timing makes every musical moment a horrific delight! Titles include "Halloween II Theme", "Laurie's Theme", "The Shape Stalks Again", "Operation Room", and "Flats In The Parking Lot". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris ConnorChris Connor Sings Lullabys Of Birdland ... LP
Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A great set of tracks that represents some of Chris Connor's first recordings as a solo act – culled from earlier ep and 10" releases, and issued here on a full LP with a total of 14 tracks. Backing is by three groups – the Ellis Larkin Trio, Vinnie Burke's Quartet, and Sy Oliver's Orchestra – and Chris is in fine fine form, vocalizing with that icy tone we love so much, a bit sad, and a bit mellow, but always heartfelt, without the forced emotion of other singers of her generation. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "Goodbye", "Spring Is Here", "Ask Me", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Try A Little Tenderness", and "He's Coming Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s Cayre pressing. Cover was constructed with a mis-aligned opening, a bit short in the back, and is lightly bent at the right side.)

LoveDa Capo ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A stunning second album from Love – a set that's still without the fuller orchestrations and baroque touches of Forever Changes – but which already shows the group moving in that direction! The rough, gritty edge of the group is very firmly intact – but they've already got a really fresh way of putting over a song – by complicating the rhythms a bit, going for unusual tonal colors, and furthering the really imaginative songwriting of Arthur Lee. Side one features some incredibly haunting shorter tunes that point the way towards Forever Changes – including the insanely wonderful "She Comes In Colors", the Latin-tinged "Que Vida", and the cuts "Stephanie Knows Who", "The Castle", and "Seven & Seven Is". Side two is a total freak-out – an 18 minute bluesy guitar jam, very over the top stuff – and quite unusual in length for a rock album in 1966! LP, Vinyl record album

Imperial, 1950/1951. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Some of the earliest work as a leader by Charlie Mariano – 2 early 50s 10" LPs, compiled back to back on one LP! Even at this early stage, Charlie's got a sound that's extremely strong – blowing alto sax with a soulfulness that was rarely heard on the instrument, using a strong boppish style, but one that didn't owe as much to Bird as most other players of his generation. The set's got a total of 16 tracks in all, many written by Mariano or Jaki Byard – and titles include "Diane's Melody", "My Nancy", "This Is Heaven", "Ryan's Love", "Jan", "Chanticleer", "It's Magic", "April Afternoon", and "American Indian". Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A surprisingly wonderful album – even if these guys break our cardinal rule of jazz combos, which is never to put the name of your home city in place of the players in the group! The group's a quartet with Frank Wess on flute and tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Grady Tate on drums – and the set was recorded live in Munich before a very enthusiastic crowd. The sum total of the players is way more than the parts – as all of them manage to really stretch out on the set, working through some long tunes that have a soulfulness and inspiration that's rare for Wess and Hanna especially. Includes the long funky groover "Smelly Jelly Belly" (hate that title!) – plus the cuts "Rodney Round Robin", "Blues For Sarka", and "All Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Os MutantesEverything Is Possible! – Best Of Os Mutantes ... LP
Luaka Bop, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
An essential introduction to the work of this legendary group – an important American issue of some of their best material – all of which never came out in our market back in the day! If you don't know Os Mutantes, prepare to be blown away – as they were a key part of the Tropicalia movement, alongside bigger names Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, and Gilberto Gil – creating music that was years ahead of its time, but which has gone on to become legendary over the years! There's so many different elements going on here, it's impossible to pin down – avant and psychedelic modes, Brazilian styles and postmodern ones, all put together with sublime production that's also way ahead of the pack! This Luaka Bop presentation was put together by David Byrne – and it features a total of 14 cuts in all – including an English and Portuguese reading of the famous "Baby", plus the tunes "Ave Lucifer", "Desculpe, Babe", "Adeus Maria Fulo", "Panis Et Circensis", "Bat Macumba", "Dia 36", and "Fuga No II". Principal Edwards Magic TheatreAsmoto Running Band ... LP
Dandelion (UK), 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $29.99
The second album from Principal Edwards Magic Theatre – and arguably even better than the first, thanks to some really focused production from Nick Mason! The sound here has more of the building elements of psychedelia you'd expect from Mason's history with Pink Floyd – and a bit less of the flowery looseness of Principal Edwards' debut – and the new focus is a really welcome addition, as it helps the group find a new level of power in their music they might never have attained! There's still plenty of folksy instrumentation and trippy themes in the tunes – but the guitars are more electric, the studio tricks more dynamic, and the overall record is a much more pleasing bit of ear candy that stands up well to the test of time. Titles include "Freef", "Total Glycerol Esther", "Mc Alpine's Dream", and "Asmoto Running Band". LP, Vinyl record album

Mike WestbrookMarching Song Vol 1 ... LP
Deram (UK), 1969. Sealed ... $6.99 9.99
The brilliant 3rd album from Mike Westbrook – a sharp-edged, two volume set with a scathing anti-war theme! The work is Westbrook's first total-concept album, and it's still one of his best – written with an edge that's free from some of the more whimsical touches that showed up in Mike's later years, and played by a core group of British avant soloists with searing intensity! You've never heard large group scoring like this – bold, ambitious, and quite different than most of what's come before. And although the whole thing sounds as if it's going to fall apart at any moment, it always snaps back into a sharp focus just in the nick of time – with brilliant results that bring the same sense of surprise that you might get from, say, a classic album from Charles Mingus or Archie Shepp! Players include Kenny Wheeler and Henry Lowther on trumpets, Mike Gibbs and Paul Rutherford on trombones, John Surman on baritone and soprano sax, Mike Osborne on alto and clarinet, Alan Skidmore on tenor and flute, Brian Smith on tenor, and Harry Miller and Barre Phillips on bass. Titles on this first volume include "Landscape", "Hooray", "Other World", and "Marching Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, 1970s/1980s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Numero Group does it again – and manages to pull together all the best bits from the crucially overlooked powerpop scene in the Land Of Lincoln – a wealth of wonderful groups from the 70s and 80s, all of whom recorded great indie sounds in Illinois! Sure, you've heard of Cheap Trick, and maybe The Kind – but Illinois was also home to handfuls of other great groups – many of whom never found national fame, due to lack of access to the kind of A&R that groups on the coast were getting. The sound here is wonderful – razor sharp guitars, super-tight drums, and tuneful lyrics that still burst forth with plenty of power – a great reminder that not all the hot energy of the late 70s was going into punk rock. As usual, Numero's overdone themselves with the package – lots of info on the groups, and the kind of stylish package that even goes way beyond most of the original records too. Titles include "At Practice" by Band Jocks, "Get Away" by Julian Leal, "I Wanna Make You" by Prettyboys, "Midnight Girls" by Eyz, "Where Are You Now" by Tom Orsi, "More & More" by Lay Z, "See You Tonight" by Contra-Band, "Kyle" by Loose Lips, "Total Insanity" by The Kind, "So Lifelike" by The Jerks, and "I Have Always Loved You" by Paul. ✨✧ Art BlakeyGolden Boy ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton! The style's not any sort of clunky "jazz meets Broadway" mode, though – as the care taken by the artists involved help elevate the tunes, and the performance, to a whole new soulful level – hardly what you'd expect! The group features trumpet work from Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, tenor from Wayne Shorter, alto from James Spaulding, trombone from Curtis Fuller, baritone from Charles Davis, piano from Cedar Walton, and bass from Reggie Workman – all very hip cats, working here with the same sort of large group textures you might hear on Freddie Hubbard's Body & Soul album from the same time, mixed with some more traditionally Blakey-led moments. Titles include "Yes I Can", "Theme From Golden Boy", "Lorna's Here", "This is The Life", and "There's A Party". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jazz CrusadersChile Con Soul ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the best 60s albums by the Crusaders – and a swinging Latin session to boot! The core group of The Jazz Crusaders is expanded with some funky flute from Hubert Laws, sweet organ licks from Clare Fischer, and lots of congas from Carlos Vidal – all of whom push the group past their usual (and excellent) soul jazz bag, into a realm of hard-grooving Latin numbers! The playing on the set is tremendous – as "in the pocket" as the group could be, but also a lot more hiply swinging and open to rhythmic changes. A total gem – with titles that include "Agua Dulce", "Tacos", "Soul Bourgeoisie", and "Latin Bit". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Pacific Jazz pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Buddy DeFrancoComplete Verve Recordings Of Buddy DeFranco with Sonny Clark (5LP Box Set) ... LP
Mosaic, Early 50s. Near Mint- 5LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
Great lost work by Buddy DeFranco – rare Verve sides recorded with Sonny Clark that show a whole new side of the clarinetist! Forget what you might think about his playing – because these tracks have a tight swinging boppish groove, and Clark's piano work makes the whole thing move nicely, without some of the hoke of other DeFranco sessions. The set (now out of print) has a total of 5LPs, and is filled with mostly master takes, plus a few unreleased tracks. Titles include "Cable Car", "Monogram", "Mine", "Titoro", "Sonny's Idea", "Cooking The Blues", and "Minor Incident". Great stuff! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alabaster DePlumeGold ... LP
International Anthem, 2022. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
There's few folks who can put together an album like Alabaster DePlume – and even amidst the heady company of his labelmates on International Anthem, it seems like DePlume has a really special way of mixing live performance with a whole host of studio-based conceptions! Alabaster's previous album was already a groundbreaking effort – but this set really pushes things over the top, with this really hypnotic blend of words and music, recorded at London's Total Refreshment Centre – at a level that's every bit as genre-breaking as any other work we've heard from that legendary locale. It's kind of impossible to describe the sound here in words – as DePlume mixes his tenor, guitar, and voice with a host of different instruments – contributions from London contemporaries on tablas, cello, electronics, guitar, and a range of other elements – including other voices added to the mix. Titles include "Don't Forget You're Precious", "I'm Gonna Say Seven", "Do You Know A Human Being When You See One", "I'm Good At Not Crying", "Now Stars Are Lit", "I Will Not Be Safe", "Who Is A Fool", and "The Sound Of My Feet On This Earth Is A Song To Your Spirit". ✨✧ Fats DominoFats Domino Swings ... LP
Imperial, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fats Domino Swings – a total of 12 million records, according to the cover! We're not sure if that claim's accurate or not, but we can say that the album's got a million dollar sound, and is a perfect demonstration of the genius that made Domino unlike anyone else back in the day – a completely unique artist to rise from the New Orleans scene in the 50s, but one who's also steeped in all the musical roots of the city! Fats has a way of laying down on the piano that brings forward older riffing styles, but in a leaner level that sits brilliantly alongside his raspy, early soul vocals – and the tight, jaunty rhythms of the tunes – which again are kind of a compression of older Nola modes, in a way that so many others would copy over the years. The set features a mix of hits like "I'm Walkin" and "Blueberry Hill", and great lesser known numbers like "Going To The River", "I'm In Love Again", "Bo Weevil", and "Whole Lotta Loving". ✨✧ Cornell DupreeSaturday Night Fever ... LP
Versatile, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but didn't break out as a leader until the late 70s! The set has a full sound that's in the mode of the larger Kudu/CTI productions of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support on Rhodes, Korg and piano from Mario Sprouse, who arranged the set. The set's made up of pop tunes from the day, and will remind you of 70s am radio at some level, which for us isn't a terrible thing, though there is a commercial sheen to the whole affair that still has a touch of what we love about the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – and the album features a total of 7 tracks that include "Stayin' Alive", "Slip, Slidin' Away", "How Deep Is Your Love", "Lovely Day", "Boogie Nights", "It's So Easy", and "Shake It Well". A well-done showcase of Aretha's best early work for Atlantic Records – a collection that really gets at the deepest soul side of her style, and focuses on the transformation of sound that occurred when Franklin moved over to the label from Columbia. The set's overflowing with greatness – a total of 14 tracks in all, with killer arrangements by Arif Mardin, and landmark production from Tom Dowd, Jerry Wexler, and Mardin. A great collection of Jordan's material from the mid 40s to the mid 50s – starting with his jazzy numbers of the earlier years, and moving into the more blues/rock 'n roll sound of later recordings. His band always sounds great and it also sounds like they're having a good time especially when they participate in the dialogue of the songs. There are a total of 20 songs and they include "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie", "Saturday Night Fish Fry", "Barnyard Boogie", "I Want You To Be My Baby", "Caldonia", "Run Joe", "School Days", "Buzz Me", "Beans & Corn Bread" and "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin". ✨✧ Henry ManciniCharade ... LP
RCA, 1963. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest Henry Mancini soundtracks of the 60s – a wonderful blend of jazzy themes and action moments, and a record that's possibly better-remembered than the film for which it was recorded! The main "Charade" theme is a total gem – performed here in both a guitar-heavy instrumental version and a cool vocal version with a Mancini chorus – but the other tunes are arguably even better, and range from Euro-styled numbers to Latin groovers, to some tenser dramatic moments. The recording quality is wonderful – filled with echo and space – and titles include "Orange Tamoure", "Punch & Judy", "Latin Snowfall", "Bateau Mouche", "Bistro", and "Mambo Parisienne". ✨✧ Ronnie ScottScott At Ronnie's ... LP
RCA (UK), 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from British tenorist Ronnie Scott – and a record that's very different than anything else he's ever done! There's a lean sound to the record, as Ronnie blows in a hip trio with organ work from Mike Carr – a very groovy sthle that has Scott taking off with all these styles he never had before! The group's totally on a classic Jack McDuff organ combo vibe, and they do total justice to the sound on four long cuts – including a great reworking of McDuff's "Lou's Piece", plus "The More I See You","Midnight Blue" and "Sombrero Sam". ✨✧ Mike WestbrookMarching Song – An Anti-War Jazz Symphony (Marching Song Volumes 1 & 2) ... LP
Deram, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
This set features both volumes of the recording – with titles that include "Landscape", "Hooray", "Other World", "Marching Song", "Transition", "Rosie", "Tension", "Ballad", "Conflict", and "Requiem". ✨✧ VariousDisco Strut Volume 4 ... LP
Disco Strut, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
This great series just keeps on getting better and better – serving up the rare disco and club tracks that we can never seem to find, and doing so in a way that's a heck of a lot hipper than the usual disco set! The groove here isn't really straight disco – it's more a mix of funky club, modern soul, and some of the better rhythms that bubbled around in the underground club scene years back – grooves that were way ahead of their time, and which have still continued to sound fresh over the years! The 2LP set features a total of a dozen tracks – nearly all of which would break your bank if you found them on the original vinyl – and titles include "We Want To Play" by Brief Encounter, "Rebel On The Run (rmx)" by Selection, "Let's Get It On (inst)" by Marini, "Remember To Remember" by Rick Holmes, "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Savana, "Feel So Good" by Mac Thornhill, "Slide Into Your Heart" by Time Spectrum, "Summer Groove" by The Joneses, "City Lights (rasta funk)" by Onyx, "Get It On The Ground" by Joe Coleman, "Ooh Wee Baby" by Ron Richardson, and "I Still Feel Like Dancing" by Newstar Band.
