Barry HarrisLive In Tokyo ... LP
Xanadu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
A great live set from pianist Barry Harris – material recorded on the same date that gave us the excellent Live In Tokyo album from reedman Charles McPherson – but done in a very different way that shows that Barry's clearly the leader on these tracks! The rhythm duo is wonderful – the mighty Sam Jones on bass and Leroy Williams on drums – players who can crackle when Harris wants them to, yet also lay back and give Barry lots of spacious territory to work some incredibly deft, personal magic on the keys. The sound almost takes us back to the initial Harris recordings of the early 60s, but also has some of those colors that would flow even more freely in some of his sessions for the Japanese market – on titles that include "I'll Remember April", "Fukai Aijo", "A Soft Spot", "Round Midnight", and "Un Poco Loco". Jazz At The PhilharmonicJATP In Tokyo – Live At The Nichigeki Theatre 1953 (3LP Box Set) ... LP
Pablo, 1953. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... $9.99
A Pablo Records release – but featuring material that was originally destined for Verve Records in the 50s – a rare performance in Japan by the Jazz At The Philharmonic! The double-length set is overflowing with goodness, all recorded in the open-ended, warm-hearted style that Norman Granz brought to these classic performances! The album starts with an extended set by the JATP All-Stars – a group that features Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers on trumpets, Willie Smith and Benny Carter on alto, Bill Harris on trombone, and Ben Webster and Flip Philips on tenors – with rhythm from the combo of Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and JC Heard on drums. JATP titles include a "Ballad Medley", "Tokyo Blues", and "Cotton Tail". The set then features six more tracks by the Oscar Peterson Trio – including "Sushi Blues" and "Up" – and another four by the Gene Krupa Trio – including "Don't Be That Way", and "Cocktails For Two". The set then ends with a long set by Ella Fitzgerald with a quartet – on titles that include "Smooth Sailin", "How High The Moon", "Body & Soul", "Lady Be Good", and "My Funny Valentine" – plus a reading of "Perdido" with the whole JATP group. LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s issue. Box has general wear, a promo sticker, and a small trace of a price sticker.)

✨✧ Horace SilverTokyo Blues ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Horace Silver's greatest records ever – and the album that always makes us remember how many of his tunes are now etched in the memory of modern jazz! The album's got a slightly exotic bent that you might guess from the title – a furthering of the sound that Silver first started on his own after breaking with Art Blakey – a hint of more cosmic modes to come in soul jazz, yet still served up here with more of the punch you might expect from 60s Blue Note. The group is great – with Blue Mitchell on trumpet and Junior Cook on tenor – both super-tight at the start of the tunes, then breaking off into deeply personal territory on their solos. Rhythm is from Gene Taylor on bass and John Harris on drums – the latter a lesser-known compatriot of Silver, but one with a nicely loose sensibility that really adds a lot to the record. The writing is great – and titles include "Sayanara Blues", "Tokyo Blues", "Ah So", "Cherry Blossom", and "Too Much Sake". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono New York pressing, with Van Gelder stamp and ear. Vinyl and cover are nice!)

✨✧ Johnny GriffinLive In Tokyo ... LP
Inner City, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the most hard-burning Johnny Griffin records of the 70s – a cooking live se recorded in Tokyo, with energy that's much more freewheeling and open than his studio records of the time! The tracks are all quite long, and move with a quickly-expressive quality that's totally great – that fast-thinking tenor solo mode that Griff first forged back in Chicago, getting some great support here from a group that includes Horace Parlan on piano, Mads Vinding on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The interplay of the rhythm section really opens up the long tracks to plenty of creative exploration – and titles include "When We Were One", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", "The Man I Love", and "Soft & Furry". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Irene KralAngel Eyes – Live In Tokyo ... LP
Trio/All Art (Japan), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Lovely lovely work from Irene Kral – a Japanese-only session from the 70s, and one of her best efforts from the time! Irene's vocals have never sounded better – strong and confident, but not in a cloying way that gets in the way of the tunes – working with a piano trio led by Alan Broadbent that's wonderfully adaptive to the mood of the tunes, especially from a rhythmic standpoint – as a number of the tracks turn out to be great groovers in the end! The album's a perfect example of the way that American singers were always able to find a hipper vibe when recording in Japan during the 70s (like Dee Dee Bridgewater or Lorez Alexandria, to name a few others recorded this way!) The set's got a great version of "On A Clear Day", a snapping jazz dance take on "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", plus the cuts "Star Eyes", "Misty Roses", "Angel Eyes", "Corcovado", and "Everytime We Say Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s Japanese pressing – K18P-9419 – with obi and insert. Cover has light wear, some aging, and bumped corners.)

✨✧ Jim HallJim Hall Live In Tokyo ... LP
A&M (Japan), 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A rare 70s set from guitarist Jim Hall! The record's got maybe a bit more bite than some of Jim's airier sessions from the 70s – a strong power with Hall in the lead not just as a sound-shaper, but also as a more pronounced force in the trio – with some surprisingly edgey moments that really make the album stand out from the pack! There's some wonderfully deft passages here that really remind us how great Hall can be in the right setting – and the setting here features Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums – on titles that include "Twister", "St Thomas", "Billie's Bounce", "Secret Love", and "Chelsea Bridge". ✨✧ Charles McPhersonLive In Tokyo (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Xanadu/Tokuma (Japan), 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from reedman Charles McPherson – a player who was really coming back to basics in the mid 70s, but also finding a way to stretch out with a sound that was different than his initial albums of a decade before! Charles has moved way past the straight bop that first got him notice – yet he's also got this deft way of making changes that hardly denies that legacy at all, and instead turns to a newly fluid sense of expression that might well make McPherson one of the most soulful altoists of his generation – especially in the long legacy of great records that flowed from this period. The group features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Leroy Williams on drums – and tracks are nice and long, with titles that include "Tokyo Blue", "East Of The Sun", "Desafinado", "Orient Express", and "Bouncing With Bud". ✨✧ Anita O'DayLive In Tokyo 1975 ... LP
Emily, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An obscure live date from Anita O'Day, but done at that great 70s point when she was getting a nice groovy edge in her style! There's still some of the O'Day brightness of her 50s recordings – but there's also a nice 70s element too – one that changes things up with some of the more mature, more adult modes that other jazz singers were picking up – maybe drinking up, too – but in ways that overall make the record sound a lot cooler than Anita back in the early days! The trio features Merril Hoover on piano, George Morrow on bass, and John Poole on drums – and titles include "Anita's Blues", "Wave", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "A Song For You", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". ✨✧ Charles TolliverLive In Tokyo ... LP
Strata East, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the standouts in a great 70s run of albums from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – standard-setting records for the spiritual jazz scene of the time – and maybe one of his most far-reaching records for the Strata East label! Toilliver's in very strong company – as the group on the set features Stanley Cowell on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Clifford Barbaro on drums – and although Tolliver's trumpet solos are always a treat, the interplay between Houston's bass and Cowell's piano is enough reason to buy the record! The highlight of the album is a great take of Cowell's modal groover "Effi", but the set also contains some masterful compositions by Tolliver – long versions of "Truth", "Stretch", and "Drought". Complicated, spiritual work – even more so than some of Tolliver's studio sessions – with very long live performances that really step out! LP, Vinyl record album

King (Japan), 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A jazz message from late 50s Tokyo – loud, proud, and proof that the Japanese scene was really coming into its own! The set's awash in great bop and swing performances from the postwar years – exclusive tracks to this set, played by four different groups that include Akira Miyazawa on tenor, Shungo Sawada on guitar, and Eiji Kitamura on clarinet – all players that work with other key jazzmen of the Tokyo scene at the time, on sharp-edged tracks that include "An Instant Of The Life", "Funny Bone", "Wherever I Go", "Hello Mr Basie", "Flashing", and "Jog". Akiko YanoAi Ga Nakucha Ne ... LP
Midi (Japan), 1986. Near Mint- ... $49.99 59.99
A really fantastic album from the great Akiko Yano – a set recorded in London with help from a whole host of great talents, all of whom make for a record that's even catchier and groovier than some of her work in Japan! Ryuichi Sakamoto co-produced and arranged the record, and really helped give a lot of Akiko's songs a wonderful sense of structure – qualities that are expanded by work from Mick Karn on bass, Steve Jansen on drums, and Sakamoto on keyboards – working with Yano on a mix of English and Japanese-language tunes. Steve Nye also provides studio help, furthering some of the Brit pop elements – and David Sylvian also guests on one tune – the great "Good Night", done as a duet with Akiko. Other titles include "What's Got In Your Eyes", "Ai Ga Nakucha Ne", "Aisuru Hito Yo", "Sleep On My Baby", "Another Wedding Song", "Donnatokimo Donnatokimo Donnatokimo", and "Michi De Battari". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy gatefold pressing, with separate sleeve for record, and very cool and big inner booklet! Cover has light wear, and booklet is loose in the middle – but overall this is a very nice copy.)

✨✧ Richie Cole with Eddie JeffersonHollywood Madness ... LP
Muse, 1980. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great example of the Muse Records charm of altoist Richie Cole – bop-fired creativity at its peak, mixed with some added contemporary elements to keep things fresh! In this case, Richie's horn takes on some key bop classics, but also opens up a bit with vocalsits too – Eddie Jefferson on versions of "Hi Fly", "Relaxin At Camarillo", and "Waiting For Waits" – the latter of which also features Tom Waits as well! The Manhattan Transfer make some subtle guest appearances too – but in ways that are much more restrained than their own albums, really leaving most room for Richie's horn. Bruce Forman plays guitar and Dick Hindman piano – and titles include "Hi Fly", "Relaxin At Camarillo", "Hooray For Hollywood", "I Love Lucy", "Malibu Breeze", "Waiting For Waits", and "Tokyo Rose Sings The Hollywood Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Freddie HubbardGleam ... LP
CBS (Japan), 1975. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jazz funk genius from Freddie Hubbard in the mid 70s! Gleam was a Japanese-only double album from the jazz giant in its original release – mighty funky at times, too – right up there with some of the best Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock Japanese sets from the 70s! It's a live set captured in March of '75 at Tokyo's Yubin Chokin Hall – long numbers played by a group that includes Freddie on trumpet, Carl Randall on tenor and flute, George Cables on electric piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Carl Burnett on drums, and Buck Clark on percussion! Each player has plenty of space to groove, and it's very well captured – you can hear the most expressive solos and the most subtle nuances. Some great solos by Freddie and the rest of the players – breathless tenor & flute by Randall, keys by Cables that are jazz funk perfection and interplay between Burnett's drums and Clark's congas & percussion that's somehow tense and comfortable at the same time. The shortest number in the set runs more than the 7 minutes and the longest is more than 20 minutes – and none is one second shorter than necessary, actually leaving us pining for more – making it all the more vital in the double album format. Released on 2CDs for the first time ever here! How this great album has been so hard to find over the years is a mystery. Titles include "Kuntu", "Spirits Of Trane", an amazing cover of Stevie Wonder's "Too High", "Midnight At The Oasis", "Ebony Moonbeams", and "Put It In The Pocket". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Japanese pressing, with booklet – a great copy!)

✨✧ Donna SummerShe Works Hard For The Money ... LP
Mercury, 1983. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the last great pop records from Donna Summer – thanks to super huge radio and video play for the title cut – and to a huge amount of tuneful tracks put together by producer/arranger Michael Omartin! By this point, Summer isn't trying to fool anyone that she's a deeper soul artist – and has really relaxed into a reworking of her previous 70s disco mode – a catchier, more crossover-pointed style that kept Donna's fire going a lot stronger than most of her club diva contemporaries from the decade before. Titles include "She Works Hard For The Money", "Woman", "Stop Look & Listen", "Tokyo", "People People", and "I Do Believe". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bo HanssonMusic Inspired By Lord Of The Rings ... LP
Charisma, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A legendary album of instrumental music inspired by the Lord Of The Rings – maybe not the all-out Frodo Fest you might expect, but a set that's been pretty important to fans of JRR Tokien over the years – especially in the years before DVDs and other mass-market versions of his masterpiece! Bo Hansson works here heavy on keyboards, but also uses some nicely spacey guitars – all spun out over tunes that could each work as mini-soundtracks for separate sections of the three volume book – with titles that include "Fog On The Barrow Downs", "Leaving The Shire", "Lothlorien", "Shadowfax", "The Black Riders & Flight To The Ford", and "Dreams In The House Of Healing". ✨✧ Billy HarperBlack Saint ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Stunning work from one of the greatest players of the post-Coltrane generation – a classic session recorded overseas in the mid 70s, and one that's filled with soulful expressions from the great Billy Harper! Harper's tenor kicks off the set with an immediately gripping sound – as searing as Pharoah Sanders at his Impulse best – but driven on by searching, soaring modal rhythms that are all Billy's own – the kind of grooves he first forged with Max Roach, then really expanded on when given the freedom of a record like this. Other players include trumpeter Virgil Jones, pianist Joe Bonner, bassist David Friesen, and drummer Malcom Pinson – and titles include a killer take on "Croquet Ballet", which Harper originally recorded with Lee Morgan – plus the titles "Dance Eternal Spirits Dance" and "Call Of The Wild & Peaceful Heart". RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An unusual session from Hampton Hawes – recorded in Tokyo during the late 60s, and issued as sort of a one-off album for RCA in the 70s. The album's got a lot of sensitivity on the recording tip, with excellent acoustics, and a warm sense of production that brings out all of the beautiful tones that Hampton gets from the instrument. The tracks are mostly short, with a mix of originals and standards. Cuts include "Tokyo Blues", "Young People's Tune", "Shinjuku", and "Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brothers JohnsonOut Of Control ... LP
A&M, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The Brothers Johnson are hardly out of control on this mid 80s set – as the album's got a tight groove that shows the duo are still going strong long past their 70s fame! As before, there's a bit of bounce on the bottom – that bassy groove that the pair first crafted back in their Quincy Jones days, topped with some sweet keyboards too – and punched up a bit on the rhythms, in styles that are in keeping with the changes in soul at the time. There's a nice degree of warmth on some of the best numbers here – and titles include "Lovers Forever", "Do You", "Let's Try Love Again", "Out Of Control", "Save Me", "Tokyo", and "It's All Over Now". ✨✧ Marion BrownGeechee Recollections ... LP
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly our favorite record ever from reedman Marion Brown – and very different than both his seminal 60s recordings, and his European sides from later years! There's a really earthy feel to this record – one that really lives up to the title, and which comes from the use of lots of percussion, played by just about every group member, ala AACM – but handled in a style that's warmly spiritual, and very organic too – right in line with the best Impulse Records vibe of the time, yet completely its own thing too! Brown plays alto and soprano sax, and is working with players who include Leo Smith on trumpet, William Malone on mbira and autoharp, James Jefferson on bass, and Steve McCall, Jumma Santos, Bill Hasson, and A Kobena Adzenyah on percussion – in addition to percussion plays by other group members too. Two tracks are spare, beautiful solos – almost a Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre vibe – and titles include "Buttermilk Bottom", "Once Upon A Time", "Tokalokaloka", and "Karintha". Capitol, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
S*itloads of sweet-natured, aww shucks charm from Buck and the boys in Japan, and one of best country live albums ever, period! The Buckaroos were the best band in the land at this point, stomping through hardcore Bakersfield honky tonk with the precision of a steamroller, and the vibe here is as giddy as can be. Wonderful stuff, and a joy all the way through. 18 tunes on 2 sides, including "Tokyo Polka", "Roll Out The Red Carpet", We Were Made For Each Other", "Open Up Your Heart", "The Way That I Love You" and more. ✨✧ Cecil TaylorCecil Taylor Solo ... LP
Trio (Japan), 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Cecil Taylor – a Japanese album that captures the pianist at the peak of his power – when he was breaking through into this amazing new territory in improvised music, with energy and dexterity that's completely unlike anyone else! Taylor in the 60s was great, but Taylor in the 70s – especially here – is mindblowing – as he attacks the piano with this reach and sense of imagination that would have blown away any of the big cockrock guitar heroes of the decade – all with a style that might sound like chaos at first listen, but which has this incredible understanding of notes, sounds, and colors – all effortlessly cascading from Cecil's fingers throughout! The album was recorded live in Lino Hall, Tokyo, at 2 in the morning – and titles include "Lono", "Choral Of Voice (Elesion)", "First Layer", and "Asapk In Ame". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ThundercatDrunk (4 x 10 inch LP set) ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2017. Near Mint- 4x10" Box Set ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from one of the most compelling mainstream talents in recent years – an artist who can get wide fame and acclaim, yet keep on pushing the boundaries into fresh new cosmic territory! This album may well be Thundercat's masterpiece – not just a summation of all the ideas and areas he's explored in the past, but also kind of a re-filtering of other modes as well – including the more spiritual and jazz-based territory that he's moved towards, especially when working with others! Yet there's nothing here that's an easy copy of another style, or another's work – as the whole thing bristles with a personal newness that's wonderful – even when Thundercat is getting help from guests who include Kamasai Washington, Flying Lotus, Wiz Khalifa, Pharrell, and Kendrick Lamarr – as well as some especially nice work from AOR legends Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. Titles include "I Am Crazy", "3AM", "Rabbot Ho", "Bus In These Streets", "Lava Lamp", "Jethro", "Show You The Way", "Drink Dat", "Jameel's Space Ride", and "Tokyo". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Unlike the mellower Breeze from the East LP (another Tjader "eastern" session), this one's got some very lively Latiny stuff – despite the orientalist theme of the LP. There's a monster version of Horace Silver's "Tokyo Blues", plus takes of Lalo Schifrin's "The Fakir", "Borneo", "Song of the Yellow River", and "Almond Tree". Schifrin conducts and plays piano, and the group also runs through a very tight version of Quincy Jones' "Hot Sake". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousJ Jazz – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1984 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. 3LP set features bonus tracks – "Sea Breeze" by George Otsuka and "Ode To Workman" by Terumasa Hino and Reggie Workman. The quality is as high as you'd expect – with that Plugged Nickel groove hitting on all burners – and titles include "So What", "All Of You", "Walkin", "Milestones", and "Autumn Leaves".
