✨✧ Tina BrooksMinor Move (Jazz Heritage pressing) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $4.99
A stunning set from overlooked tenor genius Tina Brooks – a musician who recorded for Blue Note during the key years of Hank Mobley and Johnny Griffin, but whose music was mostly un issued at the time! This rare set is a great second chapter to Tina's True Blue album – material recorded in 1958, but unissued until the late 70s in Japan – at which time the album became an instant classic in the Blue Note catalog – and for good reason, too – as the quintet features a crack lineup – with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Sonny Clark on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The group grooves nicely on Brooks' "Nutville" and "Minor Move" (done in other versions later on Blue Note), plus a nice long take of "The Way You Look Tonight" – and the tracks "Star Eyes" and "Everything Happens To Me". CD
(Out of print Jazz Heritage pressing with full color art work. NOTE: this copy is missing the rear tray card and is priced accordingly.)

✨✧ Tina BrooksTrue Blue ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever for Blue Note – and the only album recorded by tenor player Tina Brooks that was issued during his lifetime! The album's nearly perfect – and features Brooks' edgey tenor set in an all star group that includes Duke Jordan on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Brooks had blown on other Blue Note sessions before, but here, working as a leader, his sound is tremendous – vaguely to the left of center of some of his other tenor counterparts on the label, but with an equally impeccable approach to soul and rhythm. Titles include "Miss Hazel", "Good Old Soul", "Up Tight's Creek", and "Theme For Doris". CD

✨✧ Tina BrooksWaiting Game ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful title for this rare fourth album from Tina Brooks – as the set was recorded by Blue Note in 1961, but had to wait for many decades to finally get reissued! Don't let that put you off, though, as the set's every bit as sublime as Tina's classic True Blue album for the label – an equally masterful session from a tenor talent whose every note seems to be very special and well-placed – working here in a quintet setting with Johnny Coles on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! This was the last year that Brooks would ever record, making the set one of his final testaments in jazz – before he lapsed into relative obscurity, and passed away in the mid 70s. Titles include "David The King", "Dhyana", "Talkin About", and "The Waiting Game". CD
(Out of print, includes obi. SHMCD pressing.)

Freddie ReddRedd's Blues ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $12.99
A real corker from Freddie Redd – and never issued at the time! Despite the fact that Freddie was part of one of the greatest sessions ever on Blue Note – the soundtrack to The Connection, done with Jackie McLean – he rarely got the chance to record more for the label, which is what makes this session an especially great treat! The set features Freddie working with an ultra-hip lineup that includes trumpeter Benny Bailey, tenorist Tina Brooks, and the great Jackie McLean, who always seemed to bring out an edge in Freddie's playing that didn't show up otherwise. The style of the tunes is hardbop, in general, but they've got these sharp little edges and modern twists that really make them sound fresh. Perhaps that's why Blue Note didn't issue the session at the time – we'll never know for sure – but it's also what makes the album so enjoyable now! Titles include "Now", "Cute Doot", "Somewhere", "Love Lost", and "Old Spice". CD
(Out of print Connoisseur CD Series pressing. Traycard artwork has some light water staining & a promotional stamp on the CD.)

✨✧ Jimmy SmithCool Blues (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Proof that at his start, Jimmy Smith had a greatness that knew no bounds – as the album's one of a few that Blue Note recorded in the late 50s, but never issued until many years later – even though they had already released so many amazing records from this period! The set has Jimmy really cooking away – playing live at Small's Paradise, in a group that has Lou Donaldson's alto on just about every track, and tenor from Tina Brooks on most of the others too. Tunes are tighter and shorter than on the more jam session albums, which makes for a nice change – and titles include "Groovin At Smalls", "Dark Eyes", "Cool Blues", and "A Night In Tunisia" – which begins with an announcement from Babs Gonzales! 8 tracks in all – 4 more than on the 1980 album – with better sound than before as well! CD

✨✧ Jimmy SmithHouse Party (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of those hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note! The album features an amazing array of top-line players – like Tina Brooks, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey, and Kenny Burrell – and they all play with Smith in differing combinations, all of which have an open-ended groove that sounds very nice, and very much like the kind of material that Smith would have laid down at some small club in the late 50s. Titles include "Blues After All", "Au Private", and "Lover Man". CD includes bonus track, "Confirmation"! CD
(Out of print.)
