Terence BlanchardBreathless ... CD
Blue Note, 2015. Used ... $6.99
Terence Blanchard in all his many moods – some funky, some somber, and some quite serious! The album begins with a remake of "Compared To What" – done with vocals from PJ Morton, and fueled by rhythm samples from the original Les McCann and Eddie Harris version – but the music then shifts into work that recalls the sophistication of Blanchard's soundtrack material – some great mellower cuts that have Terence's trumpet gliding out spaciously over guitar from Charles Altra and piano and keyboards from Fabian Almazan. Morton makes a few more returns on the record – bringing things up to more soul-based territory at points – and Dr Cornel West appears on one track too, as a way of furthering the righteous quality of the record. Titles include "Everglades", "See Me As I Am", "Talk To Me", "Tom & Jerry", "I Ain't Got Nothin But Time", "Cosmic Warrior", "Soldiers", "Compared To What", and "Shutting Down". CD
(Out of print. Barcode has a cutout hole, case has a clear promo sticker.)

Terence BlanchardFlow ... CD
Blue Note, 2005. Used ... $7.99
A real standout from trumpeter Terence Blanchard – and a record that arguably helped set the tone for lots of Blue Note albums in years to come by a variety of younger artists! The album's produced by Herbie Hancock – who still really lets Blanchard's horn and musical vision take the lead, but also receive a bit more careful, creative treatment in the overall approach to the record – especially that great talent for blending styles and influences that Herbie's had in his own music for most of his career! In addition to soulful lead lines from Terence, the set also features work Lionel Loueke on guitar, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Bruce Winston on tenor and soprano, Derrick Hodge on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums – and Herbie Hancock and singer Gretchen Parlatto each guest on a tune. Titles include "Wandering Wonder", "Harvesting Dance", "Over There", "Child's Play", "The Source", "Benny's Tune", and "Wadagbe". CD

✨✧ Terence BlanchardAbsence ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Absence is a word that can instantly have a sense of sadness, but it can also have a sort of beauty, too – and that's definitely the case in this album of work done as a tribute to the great Wayne Shorter by trumpeter Terence Blanchard! The record's way more than just a collection of Shorter's tunes – and although it features a few numbers penned by the saxophonist, there's also a set of new music by Blanchard and his piansist too – really lovely numbers that have the trumpeter at his most evocative – in maybe a condensed expression of some of the modes he brings to his larger soundtrack material. The core group is his E-Collective – with Fabian Almazan on piano, Charles Altura on guitar, David Ginyard on bass, and Oscar Seaton on drums – but maybe the most interesting aspect of the record is the gentle use of the Turtle Island String Quartet, who shade in Blanchard's deeper ideas in a nicely subtle way. Titles include "I Dare You", "Envisioned Reflections", "When It Was Now", "Diana", "The Elders", "Dark Horse", "The Second Wave", and "Fall". CD

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersSesjun Radio Shows Vol 2 – Dutch Radio Session ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 80s. New Copy ... $16.99
Live work from the great Art Blakey – a set that features two different performances from two really great groups! The first two cuts are from 1980 – from a time when the Jazz Messengers features up and coming 80s giants Bobby Watson on alto, Valery Ponomarev on trumpet, Billy Pierce on tenor, James Williams on piano, and Charles Fambrough on bass – all young musicians who'd evolve into leaders on their own in a few short years after these recordings, but who really sparkle here under Blakey's leadership! The cuts feature a great take on the Williams tune "1977 AD", and a long version of the Jazz Messengers standard "Blues March". The last four tracks feature a slightly later group – still with Fambrough on bass, but including wonderful tenor and soprano sax work from Jean Toussaint, plus trumpet from Terence Blanchard, alto from Donald Harrison, and piano from Johnny O'Neal – an equally great lineup, but in a completely different way. Titles include a great take on the Fambrough tune "Little Man" – plus "Polka Dots & Moonbeams" and "Moanin". CD

Oxford AmericanOxford American No 115 – Up South Music Issue Vol 23 (with bonus CD) ... Magazine
University Of Central Arkansas, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 18.95
A fantastic entry in the Oxford American Southern Music Issue tradition – one that still focuses on music from the south, but which also traces its legacy moving northwards as well – with an especially strong look at shifts in soulful music styles that were part of the Great Migration! As always with the publication, the presentation and prose is fantastic – top-shelf writers giving really sensitive treatment to the topics they take on – in articles on Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Johnny Bristol and Al Green, Lowell George, Mary Lou Williams, Carolyn Franklin, bounce music, the Checkerboard Lounge, and many others. There's an especially nice look at Quincy Jones by Terence Blanchard, and photography by Kwame Brathwaite – and this issue marks the return of the bonus CD for the publication – with 20 well-chosen cuts by artists who include Shirley Horn, Mary Lou Williams, Betty Dvis, Johnnie Frierson, Particle Kid, Sunny War, John Doe, Black Pumas, and many others. Magazine
(Covers are variable in either Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin – both great covers, but we have no control over which ones we'll be getting.)

✨✧ Ed ThigpenYoung Men & Olds ... CD
Bellaphon (Germany), 1990. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ed Thigpen's a mighty young man for his age – a drummer with decades of experience, but easily able to slide into the excellent group of younger musicians here - a crack lineup that features Terence Blanchard on trumpet, Branford Marsalis on soprano and tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Bobby Thomas Jr on drums! Ed's recorded so often in a piano trio, that we especially love his albums with horn players – and this date really crackles with the kind of excitement that Thigpen can bring to the right sort of group – almost as if he's showing the world that he could have his own version of the Jazz Messengers if he wanted. Titles include "Shufflin Long", "Oh My Gosh", "Summertime", "Scramble", "Yesterdays", and "Dark Before The Dawn". CD
