✨✧ RodriguezSearching For Sugar Man ... CD
Sussex/Sony, Early 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Amazing sounds from the legendary Rodriguez – the brilliant 70s singer who had a groove that was equal parts soul, funk, rock, and folk – and an overall approach that was pretty darn unique! Most numbers here have some acoustic guitar over slightly funky rhythms – perfectly scored to work with Rodriguez's raspy soul vocals, which have an undeniably heartfelt style – somewhere in a space between Terry Callier and early Jose Feliciano, but very much its own mode too! This CD features great gems from Rodriguez's years at Sussex Records – including three tracks not on the albums – "Can't Get Away", "Street Boy", and "I'll Slip Away" – plus other titles that include "Sugar Man", "Cause", "I Wonder", "Like Janis", "Jane S Piddy", "I Think Of You", "Inner City Blues", and "Sandrevan Lullaby Lifestyles". ✨✧ Bill WithersComplete Sussex & Columbia Masters (9CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Sony, 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing legacy in soul music – the legendary run of records that Bill Withers cut for the Sussex and Columbia labels – each of them a masterpiece in their own way! The early hit sound of Withers is the stuff that dreams are made of – a unique blend of acoustic instrumentation, raspy soul, and slinky rhythms – heard to best effect on the first four albums in the set – one of which is Bill's legendary live set at Carnegie Hall! Yet even past those classics, Withers is still amazing – and shifts his sound through the course of the 70s, to bring in warmer, jazzier elements too – yet all without ever losing his keen sense of song, and his completely mindblowing vocal approach. This box features newly remastered versions of 9 albums – Just As I Am, Still Bill, Live At Carnegie Hall, Justments, Making Music, Naked & Warm, Menagerie, Bout Love, and Watching You Watching Me – a legacy in soul music that few others could ever hope to top! ✨✧ RodriguezComing From Reality (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Sussex/Light In The Attic, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing second set from Sixto Rodriguez – recorded in the legendary Landsdowne Studios in London, with a groove that's a great extension from his debut! All of Rodriguez's best elements are in place here – his folksy guitar, personal lyrical style, and surprisingly biting approach to a variety of topics – and the London setting provides him with an even more sophisticated backdrop than before, one that creates a rich palette of sounds that takes the music in some really wonderful directions! There's a bit of strings at times, but most instrumentation is by a small combo – which includes Chris Spedding on guitar and Tony Carr on percussion – so that Rodriguez's vocals and guitar are really right up front in the mix, recorded with a brilliant balance between sharpness and compassion. Titles include "Climb Up On My Music", "Silver Words", "Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour", "I Think Of You", "To Whom It May Concern", "Halfway Up The Stairs", and "Cause". CD

✨✧ Sharon RidleyStay A While With Me (with bonus track) ... CD
Sussex/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album of deep deep soul! Recorded way before Sharon Ridley became a big club diva, this record mixes deep soul vocal stylings with some well produced Van McCoy arrangements, and backing by some crack New York players. The result is one of the best female vocal soul albums we can think of from the early 70s – and the kind of lost soul album that makes you keep tracking down rare wax! Includes the incredible cut "You Sold Me A One Way Ticket", which begins with an amazing intro, and has a hook so strong you could hang a parka on it – plus the cuts "Stay A While With Me", "I Found Him, I Loved Him, I Lost Him", and "When A Woman Falls In Love". CD also features the bonus track "Scandal In Bedrock (single mix)". CD
(2021 Japanese pressing – includes obi!)

✨✧ Bill WithersJustments (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Sussex/Sony (Japan), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A massive 70s album from the great Bill Withers – one that's sometimes overlooked next to his huge crossover records that preceded it – but which is every bit as wonderful! Withers is still on Sussex Records, and still has that completely unique approach that made him a soul genre unto himself – a fantastic voice, a nicely acoustic core, and this sense of flow that's completely magnetic – augmented here with maybe a bit more funk than before, and some great use of keyboards too! The material has a conversational, wise and world weary tone that's brilliantly effective and more intimate than Bill's bigger hits of the day – and there's also some subtly innovative parts to the production that are really moving, from the harp accented piano on "Stories" and the funky percussion flavored rambler of a closing number "Railroad Man". Other tracks include "You", "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh", "Heartbreak Road", "Green Grass", "Ruby Lee", "Can We Pretend", "Liza", and "Make A Smile For Me". CD

✨✧ VariousSoul Music Lovers Only – Masterpieces Of Kickin DJs Choice 1967 to 1977 ... CD
Octave-Lab/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not just soul music lovers – as the set's got plenty to offer for fans of funk and jazz too – a wonderful assortment of cuts from the golden years of the music, all put together here with a really great ear for a groove! The cuts are sourced from a number of different labels – including Groove Merchant, De-Lite, Sussex, and Brunswick – and because of that, they come together with a great sense of variety – not a confused approach to a compilation, but one that really knows how to play different cuts off one another – introducing you to rare gems, and making you love familiar cuts all over again in a different way! There's a total of 23 tracks and almost 80 minutes of music – and titles include "Mr Hot Stuff" by Clarence Reid, "Ashley's Roachclip" by The Soul Searchers, "Loving Explosion" by The Eliminators, "The Fly" by The Kinfolks, "Funky Belly" by Warren Lee, "Come Back To Me" by Cheyenne Fowler, "I Won't Be Around" by Jeanette Holloway, "Chick A Boom" by The Pazant Brothers, "In The Moog" by Harold McKinney, "Gold Smoke" by Everyday People, "There Was A Time" by Dee Felice Trio, "April" by Bobby Knight, and "No Trouble On The Mountain" by Richard Groove Holmes. ✨✧ Chuck Brown & The Soul SearchersBustin' Loose ... CD
Source/Valley Vue, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Chuck Brown and his Soul Searchers group are past the arch jazzy funk of their days on Sussex Records – and they're heading more towards that ensemble sound that would drive the DC Go Go scene in the early 80s. The formula is heard to best effect on the big hit "Bustin Loose", an old school party funk jam that you'll probably recognize immediately – and which put Chuck and the group firmly back on the map for another few years! The group also does a pretty good remake of "If It Ain't Funky", which was on one of the earlier Soul Searchers albums – and the album includes the original cuts "Gotcha Now" and "Game Seven". CD

✨✧ Dennis CoffeyOne Night At Moreys – 1968 ... CD
Omnivore, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
If there's one thing we know about funk legend Dennis Coffey, it's that we can never get enough of his early work – especially when he's working in his trio with the mighty Lyman Woodard on Hammond! The pair together are fantastic – and have this Detroit-bred version of jazz funk that's even grittier than anything coming out on Prestige Records in the 60s – a vibe that reflects the ties both musicians had to the local soul scene, and also hits at Coffey's great wave of records to come on Sussex in the 70s! But the groove here is even deeper and more open – captured live on long tracks that really take off – so that even if the trio is playing familiar songs, they come out completely unique in the hard-jamming style of the group. The mighty Melvin Davis is on drums – and tracks include very long takes on "Eleanor Rigby", "Cissy Strut", and the great Richard Evans' tune "Burning Spear" – plus "Groovin", "It's Your Thing/Union Station", "Big City Lights", "Mindbender", and "I'm A Midnight Mover" – all previously unreleased! Columbia, Mid 70s/1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Completely wonderful music from the great Bill Withers – a set that's overflowing with 70s soul classics, all delivered in that wonderful vocal style that made Bill one of the most unique singers of his time – mixed with the acoustic touches of his early years, and the well-produced sound of his late 70s tracks! Although issued on Columbia, the set also features work from Withers' first few records on the Sussex label – a great blend of music that includes his key appearance on the cut "Just The Two Of Us" – plus "Lovely Day", "Soul Shadows", "Lean On Me", "I Want To Spend The Night", "Who Is He And What Is He To You", "Hello Like Before", "Grandma's Hands", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Use Me". ✨✧ Bill WithersLean On Me – Best Of Bill Withers ... CD
Columbia, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The mellow soul of Bill Withers is always a treat – and although this best of collection is released on Columbia, it also features tracks from Bill's stellar early days at Sussex, when he was turning out some of the most quietly revolutionary soul of the decade! Bill's voice is one of the most instantly recognizable in soul music – with a sweet raspy quality that always gets us, and which is often mixed with breezy acoustic guitar playing, and warm Fender Rhodes keyboard work. Nearly every cut's a winner – and the set features classics like "Lovely Day", "Who Is He & What Is He To You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Grandma's Hands", "Lean On Me", "Hello Like Before", "Just The Two Of Us", and "I Want To Spend The Night".
