Includes music by the New Jungle Orchestra, Ibrahim Electric, Horace Parlan Trio, Marilyn Mazur, Andrew Hill, Kresten Osgood Quartet with Sam Rivers, and Lars Moller with Geri Allen. CD
Swedish ballads, recorded in Denmark – in a setting that makes the album a real standout in the long career of tenorist Scott Hamilton! Hamilton's always been a master of tone and timing – but in his more mature years, he also seems to have loosened up, and almost comes across with a more human, open sort of vibe – one that really comes through here in the company of overseas players Jan Lundgren on piano, Jesper Lundgaard on bass, and Kristian Leth on drums – just the right sort of rhythm trio to let Hamilton make magic with these tunes. A few numbers here are familiar as jazz standards – thanks to postwar reworkings of tracks like "Dear Old Stockholm" and "Stockholm Sweetnin" – and other titles include "You Can't Be In Love With A Dream", "Swing In F", "Min Soldat", and "Blues I Oktover". Sam Rivers —

One of the greatest Sam Rivers albums we've heard in years – a really compelling little set that has Sam playing in a relatively straight manner, and working alongside vibes-based Bryan Carrott trio! The mix of vibes, bass, and drums is a great accompaniment to Rivers' searching work on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – and many of the tunes have a slightly modal approach that keeps things rhythmic, and which seems to deepen Rivers' sense of soul a bit more than usual. A few tracks go a bit out, but there's a nicely straight feel to most of the numbers – and titles include "Solace", "The Mooche", "In Search Of Black Benny", "Moderation", "Space", "Abalone", and "Captain America". A really stunning album from Hammond legend Caesar Frazier – maybe his heaviest album in recent decades, thanks in part to a surprise appearance from the great Jonas Kullhammar on tenor! You might know Jonas for his work on his own Moserobie label – but here, he demonstrates his very wide-ranging skills on tenor, and fits in alongside Caesar's work on the organ with a really great style – soulful, but also offbeat – maybe in the way that Harold Vick could throw in surprises next to the Hammond of Jack McDuff back in the day – and Frazier's pretty wonderful too, really romping with a strong sense of groove and sense of tone that really lives up to his legacy. The rest of the group features Kresten Osgood on drums and Johannes Wamberg on guitar – and titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Jive Samba", "King Of Leonne", "Thieves In The Temple", "I Wanna Make It With You", and "123". A wonderful follow-up to Sam Rivers Purple Violets album – and like that one, a record that has Rivers back at the top of his game, and sounding better than he has in years! The format for this set's a bit different – in that Sam's blowing in a sparer trio, with only bass and drums to support his work on flute open up a bit more on a few numbers, while nicely stepping back inside on others – mixing together the freedom of earlier years with a newfound soulfulness that really gives the album a lot of depth. Titles include "Nature Calls", "Chianti Blues", "Lace", "No Time Toulouse", "Invisible", "I Forgot To Remember", and "Horatio". CD

Alvin Queen has given us some pretty heavy work over the years – but here, the drummer's showing off a different side of his talents – a gentler sense of rhythm that really fits the "night" spirit of the record – as he works alongside Calle Brickman on piano and Tobias Dall on bass! Brickman's a warmly lyrical player that really fits Alvin's spirit for the record – and the trio work their way through a number of well-crafted ballad renditions that almost make the whole thing feel like some of the more laidback material from the Oscar Peterson trio of the 60s – and maybe that's the whole idea with the "Night Train" in the title. Tracks include "Farewell Song", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Bag's Groove", "Night Train", "D & E", "Tranquility In The Woods", "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars", and "Some Other Time". CD
The legendary European tenorist is still sounding wonderful here – deep-toned and dexterous, as he works with a tight quartet in the nicely intimate setting of a jazz club in Copenhagen! Jesper Thilo is proof that once a soloist hones their craft on their horn, their creativity never dims – and that's definitely the case here, as the tenor lines have the feel of late life work by Sonny Stitt or Ben Webster – as Jesper blows to accompaniment from Soren Kristiansen on piano, Daniel Franck on bass, and Frands Rifbjerg on drums. Titles include "Memories of You", "I'll Remember April", "Oh Gee", "Blue N Boogie", "Sweets To The Sweet", and "Lester Leaps In/Montmartre Blues". CD
Swirling psychedelia from the late 60s & early 70s – raga inflected soundscapes featuring the sitar – and a plethora of other mind-altering instrumentation in the psych pop canon! Many of the tunes are kind of sole examples of a psychedelic combo trying out the sitar sound, while others feature regular dabblers – but it's all groovy stuff. Features acts from the UK and US scenes, with the Mecki Mark Men, Moonkyte, Full Moon Band, the comparably iconic Ananda Shankar, and much more! Titles include "Free" by Mecki Mark Men, "Caves Of Her Mind" by Stunt's Blue Leg Expedition, "I Know What To Say" by The Ugly Ducklings, "Where Will The Grass Grow" by Moonkyte, "Prayer To St Peter" by Nick Carter, "Renunciation" by Ananda Shanker, "One Grain Of Sand" by Wizz Jones, "The Shoemaker Of Leatherwear Square" by Lemon Pipers, "Aurore Cosmic" by Popera Cosmic and more. 20 tracks in all. CD
One of the heaviest soundtracks scored by Goblin during the 70s – with lots of funky club influences, and a funky disco sound on a number of tracks that feature vocals by the great European club diva Asha Puthli. Puthli sings on the tracks "The Whip" and "The Sound Of Money", and there's one more track, "Welcome To The Boogie", that's got unidentified vocals – but which follows in a similar disco sort of mode! The rest of the material is mostly uptempo cop show type stuff from the era – with plenty of keyboards, wah wah guitars, and heavy rhythms – that funky mix of rock and soundtrack styles that Goblin did so well back in the day. Titles include "Trumpet's Flight", "Sicilian Samba", "Stunt Cars", and "Disco China". CD features bonus material – "Squadra Antigangsters (movie take 1)", "Squadra Antigangsters (movie take 2)", and "Trumpet's Flight (alt version)". CD
