✨✧ Steve SwallowHome – Music By Steve Swallow To Poems By Robert Creeley ... LP
ECM, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the classic catalog of ECM – not only because the record's got a slightly different inspiration than most, but also because it seems to unlock some especially beautiful moments from players who could sound different in other settings on the label! As the title indicates, the tunes here all take inspiration from the poetry of Robert Creeley – but never in a mode that's got the usual jazz meets poetry approach – as Sheila Jordan sings the lyrics when they appear, with a sense of her own power that's very different than a more standard recitation – and which, to us, really feels a lot like her great vocal performances with Steve Kuhn for ECM. Kuhn is also in the group on piano, and other musicians include David Liebman on saxes, Lyle Mays on keyboards, and Bob Moses on drums – all working under the superb leadership of bassist Steve Swallow – who really outdid himself with the depth of feeling in this project. Titles include "Colors", "In The Fall", "She Was Young", "Some Echoes", "Ice Cream", and "You Didn't Think". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve KuhnThree Waves ... LP
Contact, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible early album from pianist Steve Kuhn – one of his first, but already as clear an expression of his modernist genius as you're ever likely to hear! Right from the very first note, the record announces itself as something new – with a freshness that's still as crisp all these many years later as it was back in the 60s – in ways that are different than so many other modern pianists in later years (and we might even include Kuhn's later material in that batch.) The sound is hard to explain – not free jazz, but also not self-consciously avant either – really that own tune that Kuhn's moving to, of the space that would also yield some of his most amazing compositions in the few years to come. Part of the strength of the album also comes from its amazing rhythm section – Steve Swallow on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – both players who are as inventive and imaginative as Kuhn, although he's clearly directing the show. Titles include "Memory", "Three Waves", "Kodpiece", "Ida Lupino", and "Ah Moore". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary BurtonRing ... LP
ECM, 1974. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of Gary Burton's more free-flowing albums of the 70s – a bit more fusion than some of his other work of the time, with key guitar contributions from Mick Goodrick and a young Pat Metheney! The album's still filled with plenty of Burton's great work on vibes, but the guitars also soar out strongly too – bringing in a sense of pulse that's matched by the basses of Steve Swallow and Eberhard Weber, and percussion by Bob Moses. The groove's still a bit softer-edged than traditional fusion sides of the time – thanks to a mellower ECM approach – but there's also a bit more dynamic energy on some of the tracks than you might be used to hearing from the label. Titles include "Silent Spring", "The Colours Of Chloe", "Intrude", "Unfinished Symphony", "Tunnel Of Love", and "Mevlevia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, small blemishes, and is bent at the bottom left corner.)

Art FarmerLive At The Half Note ... LP
Atlantic, 1964. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful work from the legendary Art Farmer – sounds from a time when the trumpeter was really coming into his own, and finding a way to carve out a special space for himself in modern jazz! The sounds here are fresh, but never overstated – blown with that compact mode that makes Farmer's phrasing so distinct, and set up here with a perfect quartet that features Jim Hall on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums. All players are masters of understatement – and the band is sort of a perfect extension of some of Jimmy Guiffre's earlier work on Atlantic with Hall – as they've perfected a simple style that leaves the instrumental solos floating in air, interacting with each other in subtle complex ways that never cease to amaze. Tracks are longer than on some of the studio albums by the group – and titles include "Swing Spring", "I Want To Be Happy", and "What's New". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Red & purple label pressing. Cover has light surface & edge wear.)

Gary McFarlandPoint Of Departure ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99 11.99
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! The whole thing's a very cool, very off-beat set of jazz tracks recorded by vibist Gary McFarland, with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Richie Kamuca on tenor, and Steve Swallow on bass – a lineup that's as quirky as the sound of the record! The tunes are quite different than some of Gary's larger arrangements for Verve, but they've definitely got a very similar charm – quite groovy, and a unique blend of bossa influences, west coast jazz, modal rhythms, and other wonderful touches. Tracks include "Pecos Pete", "Hello To The Season", "Schlock-House Blues", and "Love Theme From David & Lisa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange and black label stereo pressing.)

Zoot Sims, Jim Raney, & Jim HallOtra Vez (aka Two Jims & Zoot) ... LP
Mainstream, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
Nice mid 60's session that stands as one of Raney's strongest from the decade, and a tight quintet performance by a group that includes Jim Hall on second guitar, Zoot Sims on tenor, Steve Swallow on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums. The tracks are fairly standard, but there's a lot of nice Brazilian titles like "A Primera Vez", "Presente De Natal", "Este Seu Olhar", and "Coisa Mais Linda". Raney's tone is nice and deep, as always, with a good heavy sound on the lower strings. LP, Vinyl record album
(Tri-color stereo pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Gary Burton with Pat MethenyDreams So Real ... LP
ECM, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Gary Burton takes on the music of Carla Bley – in a wonderfully sensitive set that opens up rich new colors in her music! The group here is a particularly well-chosen one for the effort – a quintet with Burton on vibes, Mick Goodrick on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – plus a young Pat Metheny on guitar, really shading in the tunes with his evocative tones. Burton's vibes are angular one minute, spare and spacious the next – and in a way, his treatment if Bley's tunes is some of the most sensitive we've ever heard. Titles include "Ictus/Syndrome", "Dreams So Real", "Intermission Music", "Doctor", and "Vox Humana". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Art FarmerMany Faces Of Art Farmer (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Scepter/Teichiku (Japan), Mid 1960s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure from Art Farmer – a tremendous album that hardly ever shows up in the history books, and which, to our knowledge, has never properly been reissued! The set's a rare jazz side for the mostly-pop Scepter label – featuring Farmer at the head of a small group working with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Charles McPherson on alto, and either Steve Swallow or Ron Carter on bass. The album was done under the direction of Tom McIntosh – the brilliant young composer who had a magical talent for blending together modern and lyrical modes while still keeping a strong degree of soul. McIntosh contributed a few tunes to the set, as did Dennis Sandole – the nearly-forgotten trumpeter from the Philly scene of the 50s. There's a dark beauty to this session that surpasses even many other Farmer sides from the time – and titles include "Hyacinth", "Ally", "Happy Feet", "Minuet In G", and "Saucer Eyes". ✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreFree Fall ... LP
Columbia, 1963. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible batch of freely crafted tracks from Jimmy Giuffre's legendary early 60s trio! The group features Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Bley on piano, and the two young modernists were a perfect match of Giuffre's ever-developing ideas of freedom and harmony. The music is beautiful – with a sound that's like nothing else we can describe, and an approach that's free floating (or free falling), but never directionless, and never overindulgent. Perfectly measured, with a strong sense of melody and rhythm, even amidst the more outside moments. Titles include "Propulsion", "Threewe", "Dichotomy", "Man Alone", and "Divided Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(2 eye mono pressing. Cover has some light wear, but this is a great copy.)

✨✧ Pete La RocaBasra (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the few albums that drummer Pete LaRoca ever made as a leader – and a gem through and through! LaRoca had a touch on the drums that was unlike anyone else – free, but never "out" – and in a flowing, progressive style that pointed the way towards the sound of jazz in the 70s, but which was still firmly rooted in the soulful style of the 60s. The album's filled with beautiful flowing waves of sound – and features lead solos by Joe Henderson, strong piano lines by Steve Kuhn, and some great round basswork by Steve Swallow. The feel of the set's somewhere in the vein of Larry Young's work at the time – never too "out", but much more flowing and free than the typical Blue Note. Tracks include "Basra", "Tears Come From Heaven", and "Candu". A fantastic album, with a unique approach! LP, Vinyl record album

Enja (Germany), 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful setting for the guitar of John Scofield – one that really brings out all the rich chromes of his early work on the instrument! The group's a trio – with Adam Nussbaum on drums and Steve Swallow on bass – and in a way, there's a vibe here that reminds us of some of the interaction between Swallow and guitarist Larry Coryell on the 60s RCA albums by Gary Burton – this fresh sense of color and interplay, as Scofield uses his instrument at a level that's tuneful, but also in a painterly way. Titles include "Yawn", "Dr Jackle", "Why'd You Do It", "Shinola", and "Jean The Bean". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary BurtonTurn Of The Century ... LP
Atlantic, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very hip material from vibesman Gary Burton – tunes recorded for Atlantic Records in the late 60s and early 70s, a label that allowed Burton a great chance to experiment in a range of different styles! Some tunes are very groovy, even a little bit funky – while others show more of the chromatic approach that Burton would develop even more strongly in later years, still played here with a nice sense of swing amidst the modern tones. Other players include Richard Tee on organ and piano, Steve Swallow on bass, Jerry Hahn and Eric Gale on guitars, Keith Jarrett on piano and electric piano, and Stephane Grappelli on violin – and in addition to vibes, Burton also plays piano, electric piano, and organ. Titles include "Vibrafinger", "Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place", "Coquette", "Throb", "Turn Of The Century", "Henninger Flats", "Hand Bags & Glad Rags", "Las Vegas Tango", "Some Echoes", "Daphne", "Fortune Smiles", and "Chega De Saudade". ✨✧ Gary Burton & Stephane GrappelliParis Encounter ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Quite a surprising pairing of talents – and a set that shows that at in the right settings, Stephane Grappelli's still got plenty of modern moments! The core group is really that of vibist Gary Burton – with Steve Swallow on electric bass and Bill Goodwin on drums – both players with an open, spacious feel that's quite different than the usual rhythm group for a Grappelli record – which really opens up the legendary violinist, and has him stretching out wonderfully – especially on some of the more contemporary numbers. Burton's vibes are great at this point – sharp toned, yet incredibly warm too – and titles include "Daphne", "Blue In Green", "Sweet Rain", "Coquette", and "Arpege". LP, Vinyl record album

Great Jones/Shimmy Disc, 1989. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful later project from the legendary poet Allen Ginsberg – a set put together by Hal Willner, and one that may well be better than any of his previous efforts to blend together words and music! The tunes often still have that hypnotic quality of Ginsberg's earlier recordings, but maybe with less of a hippie sense of self-consciousness – more understated, and handled by a very hip lineup of downtown New York players who include Steve Swallow on bass, Gary Window on tenor, Beaver Harris on drums, and Marc Ribot, Arto Lindsay, and Bill Frisell on guitars! Titles include "Scribble", "Complaint Of The Skeleton To Time", "The Shrouded Stranger", "Cleveland The Flats", "The End", "Sunset", and "The Lion For Real". ✨✧ Chick CoreaInner Space (Tones For Joans Bones plus bonus tracks) ... LP
Atlantic, Late 60s/1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An expanded version of Chick Corea's amazing Tones For Joan's Bones album from the late 60s – presented here with some key bonus tracks as well! The core album is amazing stuff – quite different than Chick Corea's 70s work, and a set that's filled with heavy soul jazz and Latin influences! Chick's coming off of years of work in Latin bands, and in smaller soul jazz combos, and his writing here is a mix of the freer style that would later become too free, with the rootsier elements of his background. The players on the record include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, Steve Swallow on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – and all tracks are long, with a sweeping, searching, soulful sound. Titles include a beautiful rendition of Chick's "Litha", which he also recorded with Stan Getz on Sweet Rain, plus two other nice originals – "Tones For Joan's Bones" and "Straight Up And Down". This set also includes two numbers left off the original release, "Inner Space" and "Guijira" – recorded at the same time, and a wonderful expansion of the already-great set. Added to the record are two more Chick-centered tracks from the Hubert Laws album Laws' Cause – "Windows" and "Trio For Flute, Bassoon & Piano" – arranged by Corea, and featuring him on piano and Hubert Laws on flute. The players on the set are as diverse as the sounds – and incluce Jack Bruce, Milton Cardona, Steve Swallow, Arto Lindsay, David Murray, and Hanrahan on percussion – and although the album should just sound like a mess, it ends up coming across wonderfully, with some of the most daringly intimate vocal tracks recorded in the jazz field during the 80s. Magnificent work from European jazz vocalist Karin Krog – a landmark album that shows why she sings like no other singer! On this 1974 session, Karin moves far beyond the standard jazz of her roots – into territory that's spacey, cosmic, and filled with the best influences bubbling underground in the Euro scene of the 70s. The backing group features Steve Kuhn on keyboards, Steve Swallow on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums – all working out these beautiful modal patterns that unlock Karin's cool and icy vocals. The tunes are all pretty incredible too – vocal versions of originals by Kuhn, like "Meaning Of Love", "Sometime To Go", and "Raindrops Raindrops"; a very cool version of Joni Mitchell's "All I Want", a rare Jon Hendricks' lyrical version of JJ Johnson's "Lament", and a sweet and breezy take on the Michel Colombier tune "We Could Be Flying"!
