✨✧ Stan GetzFocus ... CD
Verve, 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Oft-overlooked album that's actually one of Getz's most far-reaching of the 60s! Recorded in the year before he got caught up in his bossa pop frenzy, the record shows Getz as a darkly toned modernist, weaving out complex solos over the album's extended suite "Focus", written and arranged by the great Eddie Sauter, with whom Stan worked on the Mickey One soundtrack. The album's a surprisingly refreshing one, and shows yet another complex side of Getz's endlessly compelling career. Titles include "I'm Late, I'm Late", "I Remember When", "Pan", "Her", "Night Rider", and "Once Upon A Time", plus bonus single versions of "I'm Late, I'm Late" and "I Remember When"! CD
(Out of print, Verve Master Edition in the tri-fold digipack.)

Stan GetzStan Getz At Storyville Volumes 1 & 2 ... CD
Roulette/EMI (UK), 1951. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great CD that combines volumes 1 and 2 of Stan's early live recordings at Storyville – excellent small group sessions done with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Al Haig on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Tiny Kahn on drums. The mix of guitar and tenor is great together – a sound that became one of Stan's calling cards in the early 50s – and even the live setting can't stifle the strength of his unique tone. The CD features a total of 13 cuts in all – and titles include "Budo", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "Yesterdays", "Thou Swell", "Mosquito Knees", and "Parker 51". CD

✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz At The Shrine ... CD
Verve, 1954. Used ... $5.99
A classic west coast recording by Stan – recorded at the Shrine Theater in LA in '54, with a group that includes Bob Brookmeyer on trombone and John Williams on piano! The groove is more similar to Stan's eastern sides of the time, given his bandmates here – but the sound is still quite wonderful, and almost a relaxed Verve answer to the sound of some of the Pacific Jazz dates of the period. Rhythm is by Bill Anthony on bass and either Frank Isola or Art Madigan on drums – and titles include "Flamingo", "Lover Man", "Pernod", "Tasty Pudding", "Polkadots & Moonbeams", "Open Country", "We'll Be Together Again", and "Feather Merchant". Great stuff from Getz! CD

Stan GetzWhat The World Needs Now – Stan Getz Plays Bacharach & David ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used ... $6.99
Stan Getz meets Burt Bacharach – a heavenly combination that brings together two of our most favorite musical talents of the 60s! And while we're at it, we'd also like to mention a third – Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans, who handles all the backdrops for this set – bringing in a groove that you might not expect for tunes by Burt Bacharach – not exactly Charles Stepney at Cadet, but not far, either – a perfect setting for the sparkling, lyrical tone that Getz was hitting at this point in his career. The tunes are familiar, but the blend of talents really keeps things fresh – and with extra contributions from Herbie Hancock on piano and Jim Hall on guitar, you can bet there's plenty going on here. Titles include "Wives & Lovers", "Windows Of The World", "House Is Not A Home", "Walk On By", and "Trains & Boats & Planes". CD

✨✧ Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto (Verve master edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $5.99
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". Plus, this CD reissue package includes 2 bonus cuts – and a very cool tri-fold cover! CD

✨✧ Stan Getz & Laurindo AlmeidaStan Getz With Laurindo Almeida (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1963. Used Gatefold ... $34.99
One of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". Very nice! CD also includes the bonus track "Corcovado" – unreleased for years! CD
(Out of print. Includes obi.)

Verve, 1984. Used 4 CDs ... $19.99
A pretty darn great set that captures bits from all of Stan Getz's bossa nova recordings for Verve! The set's got a whopping 4 CDs, and it features Getz working with the likes of Joao Gilberto, Luiz Bonfa, Charlie Byrd, Gary McFarland, Laurindo Almeida, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Includes some unreleased versions of bossa tunes, plus a huge amount of other great stuff – like "Ebony Samba", "Baia", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba Dees Days", "Sambalero", "Eu E Voce", "Winter Moon", "Menina Moca", "Vivo Sonhando", and "Para Machuchar Meu Coracoa". Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, et alSittin In ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... $8.99
A great little jam session from Verve – done in a style that's looser and freer than some of the JATP albums, and with a smaller group overall! Players include Stan Getz, Paul Gonsalves, and Coleman Hawkins on tenor, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, and Wynton Kelly on piano – plus bass by Wendell and drums from JC Heard. There's a rougher, more spontaneous quality here than even on some of the other Norman Granz jam session records – a feel that's almost more "real" overall, as if you were catching the players all working together in a club. Each side features 2 long tracks – one upbeat and one mellow – and the tenor interplay alone is worth the price of the record! Titles include long takes on "Dizzy Atmosphere" and "The Way You Look Tonight" – plus 2 additional ballad medleys! CD
(Out of print digipack pressing – in great shape!)

✨✧ Stan GetzSerenity ... CD
Verve, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Stan's last truly great albums – a wonderful concert recorded in Copenhagen in 1987, with his late quartet that featured Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The soulful searching quality of the players is right in line with Stan's unfettered tone at the time – a honing down of his post-Coltrane wail, into more of lyrical one, with slight modal touches. All tracks are very long – and titles include "Voyage", "I Remember You", "I Love You", and "On Green Dolphin Street". CD

✨✧ Stan Getz & Gerry MulliganGetz Meets Mulligan In Hi Fi ... CD
Verve, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The tenor of Stan Getz meets the baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan – and then they switch things around for half of the record, as Stan picks up the baritone and Mulligan takes on tenor! Gerry always seems to open up whole new sides of his playing when sharing the leader spotlight with another star – and here, in the company of Getz, he hits a shimmering, sparkling sound that's really great, and filled with feeling. Stan's wonderful too – very much in his best mid 50s Verve period – working in a groove that's deep and laidback, with a strong undercurrent of warmth – thanks to familiar rhythm backing from the trio of Lou Levy on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. Titles include "Anything Goes", "Ballad", and "That Old Feeling". CD

✨✧ Johnny Smith with Stan GetzMoonlight In Vermont ... CD
Roulette, 1952/1953. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful document of some of the most laidback jazz ever recorded – the sublime 50s recordings of the Johnny Smith group, done at a time when the lineup included Stan Getz! The tunes on the set feature Johnny's mellow electric guitar setting the pace, alongside wonderfully-blown early solos from Stan, plus some other tenor work from Zoot Sims and Paul Quinichette, who also sit in the tenor chair on a few of these recordings. The tunes are mostly standards, but done in a great style that's not exactly cool jazz, but which has a groundbreakingly easy groove that's simply sublime! CD features a number of bonus and unreleased cuts, with 19 tracks that include "What's New", "Yesterdays", "Vilia", "Ghost Of A Chance", "Jaguar", "Moonlight In Vermont", "Tabu", and "Where Or When". Ike QuebecSoul Samba (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... $7.99
One of the few Blue Note albums with a bossa groove – and a great one too! The record features soulful tenor star Ike Quebec blowing in front of Brazilian-styled rhythms laid out by a combo that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a duo of Latin percussionists! Willie Bobo plays drums on the session, and the cuts have a short groovy feel, with a sax-heavy lead, in a similar style to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – but much more soulful overall, and with a nicely rougher feel on the rhythms. Really great stuff, and with titles that include "Loie", "Goin Home", "Favela", "Blue Samba", and "Shu Shu". Features 3 bonus tracks too! CD

Zoot SimsNew Beat Bossa Nova Vol 1 ... CD
Colpix/Warner (Japan), 1962. Used ... $18.99
A great chapter in 60s bossa jazz – Zoot Sims "answer" to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – recorded in a similar jazz-meets-bossa style, with some great guitar work by Jim Hall! Zoot's solos are a bit tighter and not as laidback as Stan's – giving a more jazz-based sound to the work that makes for a nice change – and most of the tunes feature larger backings from Manny Albam and Al Cohn – never too over-arranged, but with enough of a full swinging sound to set things right. Hall's guitar works surprisingly well in the setting – and titles include "Barquinho De Papel", "Ciume", "Recado Bossa Nova (parts 1 & 2)", and "Cano Canoe". CD
