A beautiful solo set from John Hulburt – a little-known Chicago guitarist in the early 70s, and almost our city's answer to the beauty of John Fahey at his best! Hulburt's music is a bit more straightforward, and his tunes a little shorter – but the overall sense of conception is equally imaginative – and we love the way he can spin out these wonderful lines on acoustic guitar, seeming to wrap together a hundred years' worth of musical history, but coming across with a very fresh, personal vision throughout! John's way more than a folk artist, and also isn't one of the precursors of the new acoustic movement to come – and instead, he's got this sound that's incredibly moving and powerful, but in very subtle ways. Great early work by jazz vibes guru Bobby Hutcherson – recorded early in his tenure in NYC in the early 60s – backed up by trombonist Al Grey and tenor sax man Billy Mitchell! Of course Hutcherson would go on to spin out all those great records for Blue Note, and these early recordings are a great lost document! The personnel on most cuts feature Mitchell's sextet – which at the time included Herman Wright on bass, Earl Washington on piano, and Otis Finch on the cut. Rare work as a leader from drummer Osie Johnson – two sessions recorded during the heyday of his career, when he was appearing as a sideman on countless other albums! The style here is similar to some of Johnson's other session work – particularly his contributions to the labels RCA and Bethlehem – as most of the numbers are relatively tightly arranged, and given a playful, slightly modern spin that usually features a fair bit of interplay between the horns in the group. Players vary here – both between the albums, and the tracks on each set – and key musicians include Frank Wess, Thad Jones, Ernie Wilkins, Dick Katz, and Benny Powell. The CD features both albums done for the Period label – and titles include "Johnson's Whacks", "Osmosis", "Don't Bug Me Hug Me", "Midnight Mirage", "Cokernut Tree", "Blues For The Camels", "Osie's Oasis", "Cat Walk", and "Flute To Boot". 2 of Boogaloo Joe's best and rarest albums on one CD – guitar jazz funk at its best! First up is Boogaloo Joe – a killer session of funky guitar jazz, and the record that gave Ivan "Boogaloo" Joe Jones his nickname! The set's a full-on wailer that really blows away Joe's first two on Prestige – breaking out ouf the box with a killer lineup that includes Rusty Bryant on tenor, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Sonny Phillips on organ – all working with Joe's incredibly tight guitar lines to craft some wicked tunes that take soul jazz firmly into the sound of the 70s! Titles include "Boogaloo Joe", "People Are Talking", "Dream On Little Dreamer", and "Atlantic City Soul". Right On Brother is next – and is Ivan's first truly sublime album – a set that showed the world that he was easily one of the greatest jazz guitarists of his generation – able to spin out single-note jams with a speed and dexterity that few others could match! The groove here is totally great and very righteous – heavy drums from Bernard Purdie, wailing organ from Charles Earland, and saxophone from Rusty Bryant – all cooking together in the best early 70s Prestige jazz funk mode! Sure, Rickie Lee Jones went onto become a bit of a cliche in later years, but this early album's still got an undeniable power – and was a great breath of fresh air, at a time when it seemed like most of modern music was forgetting its roots! What is it with the LA scene from the 60s onward that they always seemed to find their best inspiration in the past? Artists like Harpers Bizarre, Randy Newman, Tom Waits and others set the stage for a record like this – by reaching back into older styles and bringing them forward with a more contemporary spin. (And why was it that LA seemed to be the center of this mode – and New York, Chicago, and other cities never worked that way?) Rickie serves up a nice assortment of older-styled vocal cuts – performed with a mixture of traditional and 70s jazz backings, supported by some extra-classy Warner production from Lenny Waronker. Titles are all originals, but done with an older hipser sort of feel – and titles include "Easy Money", "Chuck E's In Love", "Young Blood", "The Last Chance Texaco", "Danny's All Star Joint", "Weasel & The White Boys Cool", "Company", "Coolsville", and "On Saturday Afternoons In 1963". The layers here come from the wonderful interplay between the guitar of Julian Lage and his trio members Jorge Roeder on bass and Dave King on drums – both musicians who lay back nicely, and find a way to resonate with those trademark chromatic notes that Lage seems to spin out effortlessly! The album's billed as a precursor to the previous View With A Room album – looser and more exploratory than that one, but also pretty darn great on its own. Titles include "The Layers", "Mantra", "Everything Helps", "This World", "Missing Voices", and "Double Southpaw". CD

Never-heard music from the great Charles Lloyd – two well-recorded live sets from the 60s, both with a very unusual group! The lineup has Lloyd on tenor, soprano, and flute, working with frequent partner Gabor Szabo on guitar – but the rest of the quartet also features Ron Carter on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – two players who really have an open, laidback way of letting the music flow! All tracks are nice and long, and Lloyd is wonderfully expressive – maybe even more so than on his studio records from the period – with these long, soulful, spiritual solos that almost make us feel like he's picked up the torch from the recently-departed Eric Dolphy – especially in the way that Dolphy would spin things out in a live setting. The set features two versions of "Lady Gabor", both a bit different – plus the titles "How Can I Tell You", "Slug's Blues", "Sweet Georgia Bright", and "Dream Weaver". CD

The "voice" here is great – a strong assemblage of the trumpet of Lew Soloff, tenor of George Young, piano of David Matthews, bass of Charnett Moffett, and drums of Victor Lewis! Lewis is an especially nice addition to the mix – a fresh Manhattan Jazz Quintet drummer for the 90s, and one who really finds a great way to open up Matthews' arrangements – bringing new energy to the group as both Soloff and Young spin out these really magical solos! Titles are all Matthews originals – and include "Kickin", "Freeway", "Stair Steps", "Dorian Mood", and "Something Cubano". CD

It certainly was time – time for Jackie McLean to break out of his older bop mode, and hit a whole new level of playing with a tight group of "new thing" compatriots like Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Charles Tolliver on trumpet! The record isn't as totally "out there" as some of his other ones from this period, but it's a seminal release in Jackie's modernist period – and it's one of the hardest to find from the era. Filled with warmly wonderful original compositions like "Revillot", "Snuff", "Truth", and "Das Dat" – the record is unpacked and remodeled nicely by the trio of young players, aided by Jackie's moody alto, and given a great spin by Roy Haynes on drums. Striking cover, too – with a huge field of exclamation points! CD

A great return to form for tenorist JR Monterose – a player who always sounds amazing on record, even though he only made a handful of albums over a 30 or 40 year period of performance! Most folks know JR's classic 50s album for Blue Note, but later dates like this are well worth seeking out – and this set may be one of the purest later demonstrations of Monterose's genius – as the tenorist has the sort of effortlessly creative solo ability you'd find in a rare few – able to spin things out with the imagination of a Sonny Rollins or Von Freeman, while still managing to hold tight with the rest of the group – who are equally great, and include the wonderful Hod O'Brien on piano, plus Teddy Kotick on bass and Jimmy Wormworth on drums. Titles include sublime readings of "Giant Steps", "My Old Flame", and "Lush Life" – plus the great originals "Marty's Place", "Evelyn's Delight", and "Luan". CD

A warmly flowing set of tunes from vibist Steve Nelson – working here with an excellent rhythm section that includes Mulgrew Miller on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums! The style isn't as archly modern as some of Nelson's previous records – and with Miller's piano to propel him along, many of the longer tunes spin out nicely with a very open-handed approach – but one that still has those great darker tones and colors that we love so much in Nelson's vibes, and which are one of the reasons why we'd call him one of the players of his generation on the instrumen. Titles include "Airoso", "Sound Essence", "Song For Tina", "Night Mist Blues", "You & The Night & The Music", and "Up Jumped Spring". CD

A really mighty collection, and really the first to give NRBQ their full due – as the set not only brings together an amazing scope of sounds recorded over the space of decades, but also includes some new material never issued elsewhere! The package is kind of a history book that starts at the present, then leaps into the past – as some of the new material is on CD1, then CDs 2 through 5 take a very long journey from the group's mid 60s roots as underground southern rockers, through a variety of changes over the 70s, 80s, and 90s. CD2 might well be the coolest – as it features 23 tracks that are just from the years 1966 through 1970 – really demonstrating that New Rhythm & Blues Quartet element that gave the group their name – a fresh take on older R&B modes, but given a bit of a southern rock spin – almost making the group an equivalent to that music that Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were to roots and bluegrass. The package features an insane amount of music – 106 tracks in all, some of them live, some of them rare, and even early home recordings – and the whole thing comes with a huge booklet of notes as well! CD

An evocative title, and one that really sets the stage for the great sound of the record – an Oscar Peterson album that's a bit more open and flowing than usual – with some great long tracks, and a mighty soulful sound throughout! The title track is a real gem – as Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen begins the number with a long bass bit that's wonderful – which then ignites Peterson's piano into these long-rolling lines that really fit the spirit of the number! Other tunes spin out with a similar magic – still familiar Peterson modes, but kind of a deeper sense of lyricism too. Terry Clark handles drums – and titles include "Nigerian Marketplace", "Cakewalk", "Nancy With The Laughing Face", "You Look Good To Me", and "Au Privave". CD

A tight trio recording – with Niels Orsted Henning Pedersen on bass and Joe Pass on guitar – recreating the drum-less trio style that Oscar Peterson used in the 50s – but on longer tracks that spin out nicely! Titles include "Chicago Blues", "Blues Etude", "Easy Listening Blues", "Come Sunday", and "Secret Love". CD

A pretty amazing album from vocalist Caroline Peyton – a eclectic set from '77 that manages to cohesively blend pop, country, soul, folk and even a touch of disco-styled funk – but it all holds together masterfully thanks to credible craftsmanship and especially to Caroline's lovely vocals! Caroline has an incredible voice – and she's given plenty of room on these tracks to really fill the room with it. Some of tunes wouldn't be out of place at all in the Laurel Canyon scene, but she also handles a more diverse palette of styles. One track, "Party Line" takes a left turn towards club soul, and despite being a bit of an anomaly, it somehow feels right in place with the rest of it. there's an honest, midwestern aura here that shines through wonderfully. Caroline and songwriter/producer Mark Bingham made impeccable team on the couple of underappreciated records they made together in the 70s, and Intuition is a true gem! Original album tracks include "Still With You", "Together", "Donkey Blues", "Call Of The Wild", "Just As We", "You Too", "Brister", All This Waiting" and "Light Years". Numero/Askerisk goes the extra mile with this well done revisit – with nice liner notes by Edd Hurt, photos, and 7 bonus tracks, including demos, outakes and more – including "Shake Down", "Another Today", "Try To Be True", "Spin" and more. A beautiful little record from Sun Ra and the orchestra – and a set that really lives up to its evocative cover and title! The album features Ra on "intergalactic space organ" – an instrument that may well be a conventional version of the organ, but which is handled with some haunting, very spacey solos that spin out beautifully often setting the scene while the rest of the Arkestra comes in and adds in great solos over the extended reading of the title tune. The lineup includes John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Thompson on baritone and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, and Kwami Hadi on trumpet – and June Tyson sings a bit on the record as well. Titles include "Black Man", "In A Blue Mood", and "Universe In Blue" (parts 1 & 2). CD

Landmark work from The Rolling Stones – and a set that may well stand alongside Exile On Main Street for capturing the group at their height! The record's got the Stones very much in their own space – years from just putting a UK spin on American blues – and instead, finding a way to take all their best influences, and fuse them into a nasty, gritty sound that's complete genius all the way through! Yet at the same time, the set also has them more comfortable with rootsy elements too – but returning to styles in ways that are very different than their youth – with a new sort of mature confidence that holds the album together wonderfully. The set cooks with the fire of the best Patterson/Stitt studio sides for Prestige – and features a similar trio lineup that has the pair accompanied only by drummer Billy James – going for a really freewheeling trio sound that lets both leaders spin out some incredible long solos. The quality of the recording is great – part of the rare Left Bank archives – and was never issued until this CD – featuring tracks that include "Deuces Wild", "Blues Up & Down", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Cry Me A River". Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Thomas really rose to fame on Sanders' classic "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – and this set really takes off from that moment – letting Leon spin out some spiritual vibes of his own, and step into a few fresh new styles as well! The album's plenty righteous right from the start – partly because the lineup includes James Spaulding on alto and flute, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and the enigmatic "Little Rock" on tenor – who is actually Pharoah Sanders – but also because Leon serves up a shorter take on "The Creator Has a Master Plan" – done in a great style! The album also features a classic vocal take on Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", with lyrics that we totally love – plus the frenetic "Malcolm's Gone" – and the tracks "One", "Echoes", "Let The Rain Fall On Me", and "Damn Nam". CD include 3 versions of "Take The 'A' Train", 2 takes of "Walkin'", 2 takes of "Willow Weep For Me", and 2 takes of "If It Didn't Hurt So Much". CD

Nicely tight work from Mike Wheeler – a contemporary bluesman on the Chicago scene who strongly continues the legacy of the city from the 60s onward – from his work on guitar, to his soulful lead vocals, to his talent for penning a tune! The work here is all original material by Wheeler – tunes that almost have more of a soul structure at times, but which are given a definite electric blues spin in Mike's guitar leads – and the cooking work of his group, which adds in an extra trumpet and tenor to the usual quartet. Titles include "You Won't Do Right", "A Blind Man Can See", "I'm Hooked", "Talking To Myself", "Turn Up", "Yeah", and "Sweet Girl". CD

Pianist Jack Wilson is one of our favorite underdiscovered talents of the 60's – and we treasure all of the albums we can find by him. His lyrical writing and playing are extremely refreshing, and he manages to spin out long free lines on the piano, while also still keeping a very soulful groove. This mid 60's recording for Atlantic features Wilson in a trio with Philly Joe Jones and Leroy Vinnegar, and the record is divided up into "2 sides" – one fast, and one slow. The fast side has Wilson playing a bit more boppishly than usual – on tracks like his own "Kinta" and "Good Time Joe", and Bud Powell's "Glass Enclosure". The slow side is more of our favorite, and features some very nice reditions of material like "The Good Life" and "Once Upon A Summertime". CD

Pianist Jack Wilson is one of our favorite underdiscovered talents of the 60's – and we treasure all of the albums we can find by him. His lyrical writing and playing are extremely refreshing, and he manages to spin out long free lines on the piano, while also still keeping a very soulful groove. This mid 60's recording for Atlantic features Wilson in a trio with Philly Joe Jones and Leroy Vinnegar, and the record is divided up into "2 sides" – one fast, and one slow. The fast side has Wilson playing a bit more boppishly than usual – on tracks like his own "Kinta" and "Good Time Joe", and Bud Powell's "Glass Enclosure". The slow side is more of our favorite, and features some very nice reditions of material like "The Good Life" and "Once Upon A Summertime". CD

A real gem from Phil Woods' back to basics years of the 80s – a time when he seemed to be able to make magic happen anywhere – no matter the label, no matter the setting! Here, Phil's in some very familiar territory that really has him opening up with ease – not just the Village Vanguard, but a warm quartet with Hal Galper on piano, Steve Gilmore on bass, and Bill Goodwin on drums – an easygoing ensemble that really lets Woods' solo lines spin out like magic! Titles include "Very Early", "Webb City", "Prelude To A Kiss", and a sublime soulful take on "Springsville". CD

One of a series of mix CDs focusing on DJs who spin at the Fabric club in London. This volume features former Mo Wax honcho and stalwart UNKLE member James Lavelle, and as you can imagine, spans the gamut of funky modern headz music. We didn't really know what to expect from the mix, and a fair bit of the stuff on here falls into the post big beat-house & techno-influenced groove that's a bit more over the top than we'd expected, but it's put together and continuously mixed in a way that emphasizes the atmospherics and groove nicely. The tracks listing has 23 cuts, but since it's a mix, a few of the bits are a little short, like the intro and Rare Earth rock break that kick off the mix. It goes on from there to include the Psychonauts "Circles", DJ Shadow "Organ Donor", South "Broken Head II", Howie B "Hey Jack", Forme "Kick A Hole (Tigerstyle)", Green Velvet "La La Land", Lazonby "Sacred Circles" and ends up at Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place". Plus the whole thing's packaged ina nice metal box with a cardboard slip case. CD

Grover Washington Jr on Blue Note – but sounding really great here in the company of guitarist Kenny Burrell – very much back to the more basic reed work of his roots, and away from some of the smoother settings of his bigger dates from a few years before! Kenny's well-crafted guitar lines really direct the set – spinning out with energy and soul, and shaping the sound in tones that work especially well with Washington's soprano sax lines. The rest of the group features Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – and titles include "Togethering", "Daydream", "Sails Of Your Soul", "Soulero", and "What Am I Here For". A jazz guitar double-header – two older albums from the classic Great Guitars series packaged in a single set! First up is Great Guitars At The Winery – a date that has a sweet trio of guitarists – Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis – swinging in easygoing, open-ended formation that allows for plenty of fast string interplay! Rhythm is from Joe Byrd on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums, and at times, the guitar-driven approach is almost in the mode of gypsy swing – but with a lot more of a contemporary feel overall. Titles include "So Danco Samba", "Sheik Of Araby", "Broadway", "Air Mail Special", and "Talk Of The Town". Great Guitars At Charlies Georgetown follows the great format first set out by the trio of guitarists Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis – a pretty airy approach to jazz guitar swinging that also features a bit of bass from Joe Byrd and some drums from Chuck Redd! As before, the approach seems to work best on older swing-styled numbers – letting one guitar play rhythm while another solos strongly – on titles that include "Where Or When", "New Orleans", "Change Partners", "Opus One", "Get Happy", and "Danielle". One of Donald Byrd's first albums on Blue Note – tight, soulful, and a firm statement of hardbop truth – a record that showed that Byrd was firmly on the map! The ensemble features Jackie McLean on alto, and the rhythm section includes Duke Pearson, Doug Watkins, and Lex Humphries – all of whom bring in a sense of lyrical interplay that really shows off a newer side of Byrd's trumpet that didn't emerge in earlier 50s recordings – one that opens up in the individuality of the Blue Note mode, and shakes off some of the more academic trappings of his early work with Gigi Gryce. All tunes are proud originals by Byrd himself – written with a real sense of color, tone, and timing – and titles include "Bup A Loup", "Funky Mama", "Lament", and "Amen". CD

A landmark album from vocalist Betty Carter – not her first time in the recording studio, but maybe one of the first full length sets to really communicate all the genius she was bringing to the field of jazz vocals in the postwar years! The record is one of Carter's more sophisticated sessions, and it's one of the few from the old days to really capture her jazzy vocals well in a large group setting – using arrangements from Richard Wess to bring some nice modern currents to the proceedings. As always, Betty handles the material with a great deal of class, and an incredible sense of poise and emotion – and thee set list is nice, too, and includes many lesser-known tracks – like "For You", "Jazz (Ain't Nothin' But Soul)", "Don't Weep For the Lady", "My Reverie", and "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire". CD

Much later than classic vintage for Chic, but still pretty darn great – and a record that was relatively overlooked at the time! The style here steps off strongly from the Chic sound of the early 80s – and the team of Edwards and Rodgers still definitely have their funky sense of rhythm intact – using drum programs, basslines, and riffing guitar bits to set most of these tracks up with a tightly snapping groove! The vocals are a bit more contemporary – presented in the way that some pop dance work of the time was using, but not nearly as cloying. Titles include "Chicism", "Your Love", "Jusagroove", "Something You Can Feel", "Doin That Thing To Me", "MMFTCF", and "High". CD

One of the most classic Blue Note sessions ever – and for good reason too! From the cover, to the title, to the hardbopping grooves of the set, this Sonny Clark late 50s smoker is one of the label's best – as pianist Clark is working here at the height of his powers – leading an all-star group that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Hank Mobley on tenor, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – all coming together magically on open-ended tunes that tighten up from the blowing session format, and really send the groove home! Plus, Sonny's writing is also great – as the set's got a number of great originals by Clark – and titles include "Bootin' It", "Sonny's Mood", "Shoutin On A Riff", and "Dial S For Sonny" – plus a bonus alternate take of the cut "Bootin' It"! Classic trio material from pianist Sonny Clark – a talent who left our planet all too soon, but who managed to record quite a number of really great albums for Blue Note in the second half of the 50s! Clark's talents were always great in a group with horns, but he's equally wonderful on a trio date like this – and gets a chance to show off both his strong sense of rhythm, and some more lyrical modes that really make the album sparkle – playing here in a perfect lineup with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The set's easily one of the best straight trio sessions ever cut for Blue Note – tracks are longish, with a very hardbop groove – and titles include "Be Bop", "Two Bass Hit", "Tadd's Delight", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD features 3 bonus alternate takes! CD

After issuing a strangely silly remix project of George Clinton's Capitol work from the early 80s, the folks at EMI have finally corrected their mistake by putting together this straight set of Clinton's jammers for the label – all offered in their original versions! The set's not prime P-Funk to be sure, but there's plenty of nice moments, and this stuff sounds a lot better to us now than it did at the time, when we were expecting another version of Cosmic Slop to come out – and weren't smart enough to respect Clinton's clever shift into 80s groove material! Includes classics like "Do Fries Go With That Shake?", "Atomic Dog", "Nubian Nut", "Double Oh-Oh", and "Loopzilla" (presented here in a "broadcast version".) 12 tracks in all. CD

Cohn's legendary sax meets the backing of The Jazz Seven, a UK group with a lineup that includes tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone. The tracks are long, with an easy swing-based feel, and titles include "High On You", "Bilbo Baggins", "Casa 50", and "Feel More Like I Do Now". CD
