✨✧ Digable PlanetsReachin' (A New Refutation Of Time & Space) ... CD
Pendulum/Elektra, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
A jazz-inspired hip hop uberclassic! While Digable Planets might not have pioneered the jazzy hip hop vibe – we might nod to the Native Tongues scene and DJ Premier's productions in the late 80s for that – Digables set a new standard with breezy but head nodding production and mellow, laidback rhyme style that dug into the abstract lyrical realm more than any of their predecessors. Still sounds fresh today, too! Includes "Where I'm From", "It's Good To Be Here", "What Cool Breezes Do", "Time & Space (A New Refutation Of)", "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)", "Escapism (Gettin Free)", "Pacifics", "Appointment At The Fat Clinic", "Swoon Units", "Last Of The Spiddyocks", "Examination Of What", "Nickel Bags", and "Jimmi Diggin Cats". Red Norvo TrioRed Norvo Trio ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1954. Used ... $1.99 2.99
Great lean grooves from vibist Red Norvo – exactly the kind or record that shows why he was such an amazing talent on his instrument in the 50s! The album has Red working without piano or drums – just the guitar of Jimmy Raney and bass of Red Mitchell – both players who are hipper than the usual cats to handle their instruments too, especially Raney, whose sharp tone is a great match for Norvo's vibes. Red's vibes are way up front on most of the tracks, but leave plenty of space for the other players to shine, especially Raney's guitar work on "J9 Hate K9" and "Out Of Nowhere". Other tracks include "Crazy Rhythm", "Puby La Keg", "Just One Of Those Things", "Everything I've Got", and "Prelude To A Kiss". CD

✨✧ Shabazz PalacesQuazarz – Born On A Gangster Star ... CD
Sub Pop, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Shabazz Palaces takes spacey hip hop further out then they've every done before, while still somehow holding ground in hazy, headnodding beats and rhymes – delivering 2 separate albums loosely centered around a cosmic character called Quazarz! Far out as concept is and as thickly atmospheric as the vocals are record, Born On A Gangster Star and Quazarz Vs The Jealous Machines still manage to come across as some of the most immediately accessible music the duo have recorded to date – but still a far murkier, moodier outer space experience than Ishmael Butler's pioneering legendary work with jazz rap pioneers Digable Planets or the underrated Cherrywine. Includes "Since CAYA", "When Cats Claw", "Shine A Light" feat Thaddillac, "Deese Du Sang", "Eel Dreams" feat Loud Eyes Lou, "Parallax" feat The Palaceer Lazaro, "The Neurchem Mixalogue", "That's How City Life Goes", "Moon Whip Quaz" feat Darrius and "Federalist Papers". Terry CallierHidden Conversations ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2009. Used ... $18.99
Jazzy folk soul survivor Terry Callier returns to Mr Bongo with Hidden Conversations – with Terry's soul searching lyricism, warm vocals, and mood setting acoustic guitar paired with laidback production by trip hop pioneer Robert Del Naha of Massive Attack! The styles work pretty well together – Terry's way with a song and his performances are built ready to soar, even at their most stripped down and spare, and his voice and guitar are leading lights of the production, over spacey keys and trippy beats. Terry sings, speaks, scats, and tells stories wonderfully, and we're as proud as ever to have him as our Chicago-to-the-cosmos soul sage! Titles include "Wings", "Sunset Boulevard", "Hidden Conversations", "The Hood I Left Behind", "Once I Dreamed Of Heaven", "Fool Em I Fool R U", "Rice And Beans – Grace", "Jessie And Alice", "John Lee Hooker" and "Live With Me". CD
