✨✧ VariousNorthern Soul Connoisseurs ... CD
Spectrum (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some great Northern soul, pulled together from the wide array of labels currently handled by Universal/Spectrum – including Motown, MGM, Philips, and Chess. There's more than a few great cuts on here that we haven't seen reissued elsewhere – and although the price of the set is cheap, it's got a fortune's worth of rare soul sides! Titles include "6x6" by Earl Van Dyke, "The Boogaloo Party" by The Flamingos, "He Who Picks A Rose" by Jimmy Ruffin, "Worth Every Tear I Cry" by Dee Dee Warwick, "Learning To Trust My Man" by Sisters Love, "Landslide" by Tony Clarke, "The Way You've Been Acting" by Al Kent, "Do I Love You" by Frank Wilson, "Baby Hit & Run" by The Contours, and "Love Love Love" by Bobby Hebb. 17 tracks in all! ✨✧ Oliver Nelson/King Curtis/Jimmy ForrestSoul Battle (with bonus track) ... CD
Prestige, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
This is the kind of battle we like to see! Three heavy tenors – Nelson, King, and Jimmy Forrest – come head to head in a relaxed set of tunes cut in that Prestige blowing session mode, but tweaked with a bit more tightness, in the style of some of the label's emerging soul jazz sides of the 60s. Nelson's gutsy tenor will shock you if you haven't heard him in this sort of less restrained setting – and Forrest's work from this time is always a treat. Titles include "Blues For MF", "Anacruses", "Perdido", and "In Passing". Includes the bonus track "Soul Street". CD
(Early 90s OJC pressing.)

✨✧ VariousChess Soul Sisters ... CD
Chess/Universal (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard and heavy female soul from the mighty Chess Records – and a selection of tracks that features plenty of funk in the mix too! The sisters on this set are not of the sobbing kind – as the package goes for a proud-stepping approach to soul that puts the ladies in charge right from the very first note – backing their deeply soulful vocals with a righteous set of backings, and really upping the power of tunes with some sock-solid production all the way through! Most of the tunes are from the late 60s, when Chess was bringing a good deal of funk into the mix – and plenty are from rare singles that haven't been reissued for years! 20 tracks in all, and part of this great Mojo Chess series – with titles that include "Dirty Man" by Laura Lee, "Git Out" by Mitty Collier, "Liberation Conversation" by Marlena Shaw, "Take Me For A Little While" by Jackie Ross, "Don't Mess With The Messer" by Koko Taylor, "In Orbit" by Joy Lovejoy, "Cheater Man" by Irma Thomas, "Sally Go Round The Roses" by The Jaynettes, "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw, "My Babe" by Mitty Collier, "I Surrender" by Fontella Bass, and "I Don't Wanna Fuss" by Sugar Pie Desanto. Tommy FlanaganTommy Flanagan Trio & Sextet (aka Bash) ... CD
Prevue, 1961. Used ... $11.99
A different version of the album Bash – recorded for the Jazztime label in 1961, with leadership by Dave Bailey – a set that's filled with fire, soul, and imagination – recorded as part of the drummer's amazing (and amazingly short) early 60s run as a leader! The date smokes with the same sort of energy as Dave's great "Gutter" albums for Epic – a groove that's part Blue Note, part Prestige, and carried off with so much precision, we wonder why Bailey never recorded more as a leader. Players are all wonderful – Kenny Dorham's on trumpet, Curtis Fuller's on trombone, Frank Haynes is on tenor, and Tommy Flanagan's on piano. Ben Tucker provides excellent basswork, and proves that him and Bailey were one of the best hardbop rhythm teams ever! Cuts include "Grand Street", "Osmosis", "Soul Support", and "An Oscar For Oscar". CD features 7 tracks in all – including some that haven't been on other versions of this session. Other titles include "Just Friends", "Like Someone In Love", and "BMT Express". CD
(1998 pressing, barcode has a cutout hole.)

T-Groove & George Kano ExperienceLady Champagne (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2022. Used ... $14.99
Few folks get a classic groove as right as T-Groove – and here, he's working with the George Kano Experience for an even more classic vibe – this wonderful blend of soul, jazz, funk, and boogie – all put together with the best sort of 80s groove production! The album's got a wonderfully understated vibe – so much so, the whole thing almost feels like the kind of lost major label production from back in the day – the sort of the set that was cut with top-shelf talents in the studio, then under-promoted by the record company – only to be discovered years later by rare groove hounds like us! Yet it's contemporary, and hopefully will get the attention it deserves – overflowing with great tracks that include a clubby remake of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island", topped with the lyrics penned by Mark Murphy in the 70s – plus tracks that include "Shallow Naked Love", "Timeless Groove", "Haven", "Do It Baby", and "Secret Lover". ✨✧ Terry CallierAbout Time – The Terry Callier Story 1965 to 1982 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A label-spanning look at the music of Terry Callier – one that starts with his folksy roots, runs through his sublime soul at Chess, and ends with some of his overlooked modern soul numbers from the early 80s! There's been a few other Callier collections on the market, but this one's got the best vibe of all of them – as it really goes out of its way to paint the full picture of Terry's unique music – by weaving together tunes that touch on his strongest moments of genius, and mixing those with some surprising gems that haven't been reissued before! Especially rare bits include the previously unissued "Hangman" – recorded for Cadet in the early 70s; a 45 mix of "You're Going To Miss Your Candyman"; the Erect Records cuts "I Don't Want To See Myself Without You" and "If I Could Make You Change Your Mind", both only issued on 12" single; and the early soul 45 "Look At Me Now". Other tracks include "It's About Time", "Dancing Girl", "Occasional Rain", "Martin St Martin", "Until Tomorrow", "I Don't Want Nobody Else", "Turn You To Love", "Be A Believer", "What Color Is Love", and "Ordinary Joe". ✨✧ Howard TatePortrait Of Howard ... CD
Solid Ground, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great recent chapter in the rediscovery of 60s soul legend Howard Tate – a set that's arguably more laidback and relaxed than his initial comeback album, and which has some deeper, more complicated edges as well! Backings are by the orchestra of Steve Weisberg, who mix in some slightly jazzier moments with the bluesier ones you might expect from Tate – all in a style that opens him up somewhat, and covers some surprising ground with the choice of tunes on the set. Tate's vocals haven't dimmed at all with time, and the production has him right up front in the mix – on titles that include "Hell Is Just A Place On Earth", "Dear Lord", "Louisiana 1927", "Homewrecker", "Close To You", "I'll Be Home", "Left For Dead", "Every Time It Rains", and "Solid Ground". ✨✧ Lorraine EllisonSister Love – The Warner Brothers Recordings (Introducing/Stay With Me/Lorraine Ellison/Singles & Rare) (3CD set) ... CD
Warner, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Incredible soul from the legendary Lorraine Ellison – an overstuffed package that goes way beyond the work that was featured on her three classic albums for Warner Brothers! Lorraine's a Philly singer, but one with the depth of soul sisters from much farther south – and her Warner recordings are a wonderful mix of uptown production and deeper soul vocals – a sublime mix that's finally getting its full due here! During the Warner years – roughly 1966 to 1973 – Lorraine not only recorded three albums worth of material, but also a huge number of singles, some soundtrack cuts, and even a number of tunes that never got issued – all of which are packaged here, along with a full CD of rare demo material! ✨✧ Meshell NdegeocelloComet Come To Me ... CD
Naive (France), 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
Meshell Ndegeocello comes on with the force of a comet – and delivers one of her boldest records in years – a crackling set of cosmic soul tunes that have all the power of the singer in her early years! Meshell's definitely absorbed some of the headier elements of her varied projects over the past decade or so – including some stronger jazz elements, a respect for older roots, and even a complicated sense of rhythms – but she also moves forward with a focus and presence that we haven't heard this strongly in years – proud, righteous, mature, and very much her own self throughout the course of this wonderful album! Titles include "Friends", "Shopping For Jazz", "Conviction", "Folie A Deux", "Choices", "Modern Time", "American Rhapsody", "Tom", "Good Day Bad", and "Comet Come To Me". CD

✨✧ Carlos HenriquezBronx Pyramid ... CD
Blue Engine, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first album as a leader for bassist Carlos Henriquez – and a set that's long overdue, given Carlos' many years working as a key sideman in so many other groups! The set's a very personal project – titled after Carlos' Bronx home turf, and performed in a style that mixes Latin jazz roots with more complex tonal arrangements that show a real sophistication in the writing and arranging talents of Henriquez – so much so, we wonder why we haven't heard more from him before! The work is wonderful – a very hip New York blend of modes and patterns – very modern, but still quite warm – with strong performances from players who include Michael Rodriguez on trumpet, Robert Rodriguez on piano, Felipe Lamoglia on tenor, and Ali Jackson on drums. Rich in soul and spirit throughout – with titles that include "Chucifrito", "The Bronx Pyramid", "Joshua's Dream", "Guarajazz", "Promesas", "9 O'Clock Bomba", and "Brook Ave". CD

✨✧ Joseph MalikDiverse ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweetly spacey soulful work from Joseph Malik – an underground singer with distinct folksy touches! The mode of the work is somewhat in the NuSoul style – with a fair bit of warm production touches, keyboards, and electronic and jazzy bits creeping into the mix – but Malik's also got an earthy vocal approach that opens up here in a free flowing mode that's a bit rootsier than other current soul singers. Plus, many of the tracks use acoustic guitar in a strong way – adding a down to earth element to the recordings, one that recalls the spirit of 70s soul/folk crossover talents, like Richie Havens, Terry Callier, Shawn Phillips, and others. And of course, since the record's on Compost, it's got more than enough of a hip groove running through the best tracks – and stands as another proud feather in the cap of this level that's forever changing the sound of modern music! Titles include "Soul Blues", "Mother's Son", "I Am Drifting", "Ibotribe", "Melodies", "Evil Things", and "Futuristica". CD

✨✧ Richie HavensMixed Bag ... CD
Polydor, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
The genius of Richie Havens at this point is beyond compare – a unique take on the dying folk sound of the 60s, one that infused it with a deeper sense of soul that helped it get new legs in the Woodstock generation – yet which is also heard here before any of the post-hippie cliches that would bog down some of Richie's later work. There's an earnestness to this music that's also touched with a good degree of worldly sense – a notion that the world was changing, but one person at a time, and mostly through the gentle efforts and honest efforts of souls like Richie. This LP features 11 tracks in all – with titles that include "High Flyin' Bird", "San Francisco Bay Blues", "Just Like A Woman", "Sandy", "Three Day Eternity", "Follow", and "Handsome Johny". CD

Greensleeves (UK), 1970s/1980s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Heavy transatlantic vibrations selected by Don Letts! As the principle architect of the connection between the brash UK punk scene of the 70s and the Jamaican music community, you know Letts is especially qualified to assemble a massive set of reggae pulled from the vaults of Greensleeves! Bouncing back and forth between rollicking dancehall and dee jay cuts, earth shaking dubs and hardcore roots, on up through bubbling modern digital numbers, this is one excellent set of cuts that haven't been anthologized over and over again as you hear so often! 30 tracks spread out over two discs, including "War" by the Wailing Souls, "Wa Do Dem" by Eek A Mouse, "Mary Long Tongue" by Barrington Levy, "How The West Was Won" by Toyan, "Love Tickles Like Magic" by Junior Delgado, "Poor & Humble"by Wayne Wade, "None Of Jah Jah Children No Cry" by Ras Michael & The Sons Of Negus, "Let's Get Started" by Tetrack, "Pirate's Anthem" by Home T, Cocoa Tea and Shabba Ranks, "Mind Yu Dis" by Gregory Isaacs, "Heads High (Kill 'Em With It rmx)" by Mr Vegas, "Under Mi Sensi" by Alozade & Hollow Point, "No Letting Go" by Wayne Wonder, "Sufferer" by Bounty Killer and "Love Is Divine" by Sizzla.c CD

✨✧ VariousClub Jazz A La Mode 3 ... CD
Rambling (Japan), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A host of unusual club jazz tracks – a number of which are from groups we haven't heard before! The set's more in a jazzy club mode, than the straight acoustic vibe we usually associate with the club jazz approach – but there's still plenty of great instrumental moments, and a sound that's warmly soulful throughout, even when the beats get a bit heavy, or the instrumentation a bit electric. The package follows very nicely in the vein of the other releases in the series, but digs a bit deeper too – and titles include "Club De Cigale" by Tape Five, "Charleston Butterfly" by Parov Stelar, "Message From Herbie" by Beatfanatic, "Higher" by Jojo Effect, "Il Sorpasso" by Bebo Beat & The Super Lounge Orchestra, "Understanding The Rich" by Alice Sings The Petterson Songbook, "Wonderful" by Brenda Boykin, "Always Love (Sunaga T rmx)" by Fabio Nobile, and "Smooth Operator (DJ Niche & DJ Shinsuke rmx)" by Karen Aoki with Native.
