Classic trio material from pianist Sonny Clark – a talent who left our planet all too soon, but who managed to record quite a number of really great albums for Blue Note in the second half of the 50s! Never-issued material from the Sonny Clark Trio sessions on Blue Note – presented here for the first time on a Japanese release! There's precious little music committed to tape by Sonny in this format, but he shines no less here than on any other of the dates he cut for Blue Note, both as a sideman and leader. The group here is Paul Chambers on bass and Wes Landers on drums, and though it's a batch of standards, Sonny's crisp edge and relaxed groove makes it more than worthwhile. A great Sonny Clark album – and very different than any of his other work! The album was recorded live at a private party in 1954, not issued until the mid 70s – and it features Sonny playing in a trio format, in a relaxed setting that has a bit more of an exploratory feel than some of his straighter work. The groove is nice and mellow, with Sonny taking the lead over a thrown-together rhythm section.
