Joe Gibbs & The Professionals70s Dub Albums Collection (4CD set) ... CD
Joe Gibbs/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 39.99
A massive amount of radical records from the great Joe Gibbs – a producer who forever changed the face of Jamaican music with a legendary run of dub albums in the 70s! Joe was no stranger to the scene by the time of these tracks – but the sessions had him really burrowing in to very experimental territory, coming up with sounds that were years ahead of their time, and which set the tone for so many other dub productions in years to come – all very far from some of the chart-topping reggae hits of the decade! The work features plenty of hypnotic rhythms from Sly & Robbie, and great guitar work from Earl Chinna Smith – plus nice horn parts and keyboard lines too – all elements that are whipped up into a sonic souffle by the maestro. This 4CD set features this legendary run of records – Dub Serial, State Of Emergency, Majestic Dub, More Majestic Dub, and the African Dub albums, chapters 1 to 4 – with 12 tracks that have never been on CD before, and the usual deep detail and top-shelf presentation of the Doctor Bird label. Augustus PabloDubbing In A Africa ... CD
Abraham/Get On Down, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Uber-classic dub from Augustus Pablo! Dubbing In A Africa was produced by Pablo and features a rhythm section of Bingy Bunny, Sly & Robbie and Gladdy. Here they deliver a nice, tight set of tunes which like many of Pablo's other classics, veer closer to rhythm workouts than deep space dub excursions – and we ain't complaining about that! Tremendous stuff from one the greats! Titles include "King Of Kings Dub", "Herbal Weed Dub", "Dub In Ethiopia", "Dubbing In A Africa", "Nigerian Love Dub", and "Mount Of Olives Dub". CD

✨✧ Padlock (with Gwen Guthrie)Padlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Mango/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through! The set's a project put together by Sly & Robbie, and recorded at Compass Point Studios – all with a groove that's kind of a dubbier take on the sound of New York dancefloors a the time – nicely bassy, slightly beaty, and topped with some really wonderful vocals from Gwen Guthrie! Larry Levan mixed the whole thing to perfection, giving it a real Paradise groove – and instrumentation is by Wally Badarou on synth, Harry Whitaker on keyboards, Darryl Thompson on guitars, and Jimmy Maelin on percussion. The set's kind of a mini-suite, based around a few key musical themes – and titles include "Padlock", "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Peanut Butter" and "Getting Hot". CD also features 6 more bonus tracks – "Hopscotch (Larry Levan rmx inst)", "Getting Hot (original 12" version)", "Padlock (album mix of Portrait)", "Seventh Heaven (album mix of Portrait)", "Hopscotch (album mix of Portrait)", and "Peanut Butter (original 12" version)". ✨✧ Gwen GuthriePortrait (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Tracks include "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Oh What A Life", "Younger Than Me", and a nice cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Padlock (Larry Levan special mix)", "Hopscotch (Larry Levan rmx inst)", and "Peanut Butter (Larry Levan special mix)". CD

✨✧ InturnsConsider Yourself (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soulful harmonies-laded Jamaican music from The Inturns – who also recorded as The Viceroys and with other monikers from the mid 60s onward – and are really in peak form here in the later 70s! It's beautiful stuff, with rhythmsthat balance a rawer grit with a lighter touch – laid down at Channel One by Sly & Robbie, Ansell Collins, Skully Sims and other prime scene players – but it's really the soul-steeped vocals that carry the vibe here. The Pressure Sounds pedigree for underappreciated archival reggae continues to blow us away! Includes "Send Us", "Consider Yourself", "Detour", "Jah Ho Jah", "Nothing Is Impossible", "Get To Know", "Do We Have To Fight", "Sing A Good Song", and "Jah Ho". CD also includes the bonus 12" mixes of "Nothing Is Impossible" and "Detour". CD
