✨✧ Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirDo Not Pass Me By – Vol 2 ... CD
Universal Awareness/Numero, 1973. Used ... $6.99
The even more obscure second volume to the great soul/gospel classic Do Not Pass Me By – and like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. Tracks include "I Shall Wear A Crown", "O Sinner", "I Want To Be In Love With You", "Do Not Pass Me By", "O What A Day", "Here I Am", and "There Is Only One". CD

✨✧ Led ZeppelinPresence (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used Gatefold ... $8.99
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", and "Tea For One". CD
(Out of print, includes obi. Appears to be taken from the Definitive Collection box set.)

✨✧ Chet Baker/Jim Hall/Hubert LawsStudio Trieste (Japanese pressing) ... CD
CTI (Japan), 1982. Used ... $24.99
A great later date from CTI – proof that the label still had its magic going on well into the 80s! The session's a larger group effort headed up by Don Sebesky, and featuring key solos by Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Hubert Laws – all of whom get plenty of room to do their thing on the album's longer tracks! Other players include Kenny Barron, Jack Wilkins, Jorge Dalto, George Mraz, and Steve Gadd – plus bit of added percussion – and although the group is large, the overall sound is relatively lean – spacious and airy, in keeping with Baker's best moments on records like these, and always sensitive enough to let Hall's gentle work on the strings of his guitar shine through nicely! Titles include "Malaguena", "Django", "Swan Lake", and "All Blues". CD
(2006 Japanese pressing – includes obi.)

Jerry ButlerSingles ... CD
Vee Jay/Charly (UK), Late 50s/1960s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A totally killer collection of work from the early solo years of Chicago soul genius Jerry Butler – a package that features his singles for the Vee Jay label, but at a level that's way more than hits – as the whole thing features lots of unusual tunes, and even rare b-sides too! Jerry was a groundbreaking singer at this point in his career – a guy with all the class and coolness of Nat King Cole or Billy Eckstine, but more more of a soul singer overall – one whose work in these tracks brought a new level of maturity to the music, and helped pave the way for generations of artists to come! Vee Jay really gave Jerry the top-shelf treatment – the right level of pride and power to match his voice – and the 2CD set features 56 tracks in all, with a nice booklet of notes, in a hardback cover. Titles include "I Dont' Want To Hear It Any More", "Strawberries", "Where's The Girl", "It's Too Late", "You Can Run But You Can't Hide", "Find Another Girl", "I See A Fool", "I Found A Love", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Couldn't Go To Sleep", "I Was Wrong", "I Can't Stand To See You Cry", "Just For You", "Smile", and "How Beautifully You Lie". Edsel (UK), 1978. Used ... $14.99
Rootsy soundtrack that features lots of rock bluesy tracks – like "Hard Workin Man" by Captain Beefheart, "Wang Dang Doodle" by Howlin Wolf, "Goodbye, So Long" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Saturday Night Special" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and "Satin Sheets" by Jeanne Pruett. The other half of the score features some nice work by Jack Nitzsche, fairly straight stuff – but still from his best 70s soundtrack period. Titles from him include "Coke Machine", "FBI", "Party", and "Easy Listening". CD

Chick CoreaExpressions ... CD
GRP, 1994. Used ... $0.99
Very expressive work from Chick Corea – a solo set from the 90s, and a great reminder of his acoustic talents on the piano! Although Chick's a player you might normally associate with electric riffs and freewheeling fusion, he's also a very sensitive stylist when he wants to be – as you'll hear on the album's beautiful versions of familiar standards – played by Corea in ways that really open the tunes up, and in surprisingly short amount of time. It's almost as if Chick's brought all the open-ended modes he learned from the fusion years back to traditional jazz piano – making them work beautifully, all without any tricks or gimmicks. Titles include "Monk's Mood", "My Ship", "Lush Life", "Armando's Rhumba", "Stella By Starlight", and "This Nearly Was Mine". CD

Sonny CrissComplete Imperial Sessions ... CD
Imperial/Blue Note, 1956. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
Fantastic work from one of the most overlooked alto talents of all-time! This beautiful CD features tracks from Sonny's 3 rare albums on Imperial – Jazz USA, Go Man, and Plays Cole Porter. The records were all recorded in 1956 – and they feature some of the strongest bop playing to ever come out of LA, total proof that that city wasn't always noodling around with cool jazz during the 50s! Sonny plays alto so well you want to cry – and every note is perfectly placed, with just the right mix of technical skill and warm soulful humanity. Most of this material has only ever been reissued in Japan – and the CD includes wealth of excellent cuts like "If I Had You", "I Love You", "Wailin With Joe", "West Coast Blues", "Criss Cross", "Ham's Blues", and "Blue Friday" – but the whole thing's great! ✨✧ Sammy Davis JrSammy Davis Jr Sings The Big Ones For Young Lovers ... CD
Collectors Choice/Reprise, 1964. Used ... $16.99
A near-lost album from Sammy's years at Reprise – and an album that's got that nice bouncey style that the label was using with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra in the 60s! A lot of the thanks goes to producer Sonny Burke, who inflects Sammy's vocals with a punched-up set of rhythms that makes even the most familiar numbers come out groovy – a factor that Sam's certainly aware of, as he reaches to the top with that "yeah, man" style that helps to completely transform some of the tunes. Titles include great versions of "The Days Of Wine & Roses", "Not For Me", "I Wanna Be Around", "It's All In The Game", "Fools Rush In", and "Choose". CD

DeodatoCrossing ... CD
SMC, 2010. Used ... $14.99
Sweet sweet work from Deodato – a great little set that almost makes us think it's the 70s all over again! Deodato's working in that great blend of jazz and soul he first set down during his CTI years – then took to new heights on MCA and Warner too – a wonderfully warm blend that's filled with plenty of jazz at the core, but which also features key soulful touches from guests who include Al Jarreau, John Tropea, Novecento, and Londonbeat! Most numbers feature vocals, but there's plenty of space for Deodato's keyboards too – which have that round sound and deep feel we really remember from the Fender Rhodes generation. Titles include "Night Passage", "The Crossing", "Double Face", "I Want You More", "Border Line", and "Rule My World". CD

Houses Of The Holy is the essential the blueprint for countless imitators to come – but it's also got smarts, subtleties and creative ambitious that's just plain lost on the watered wannabes that floated up in Zeppelin's wake. Titles include "The Crunge", "Over The Hills & Far Away", "The Song Remains The Same", "The Rain Song", "Dancing Days", "Dyer Maker", "No Quarter", and "The Ocean". CD

A classic bit of indie blues from the Chicago scene – featuring some great players from the second generation after Chess Records stopped picking up the younger local talents! Magic Sam leads the group on vocals and guitar, and he's working here with Mighty Joe Young on guitar, Odie Payne on drums, and Mack Thompson on bass – all to craft a set of rough and ready blues tunes that would have played well on both sides of the tracks at the time. Titles include "That's All I Need", "All Of Your Love", "I Don't Want No Woman", "Mama Mama Talk To Your Daughter", and "Lookin Good", a nice instrumental! CD

Warner, 1993. Used ... $3.99
A really well-titled set from Frankie Beverly & Maze – as the album takes the group right back to the mellow-stepping sound that first made them great back in the 70s! Production's a bit more updated, but still very laidback – and there's a smoothly-grooving glow to the record we totally love – a perfect format for Frankie's always-amazing vocals, updated just slightly for the 90s. The production values are never too polished, and the songwriting is still great – on titles that include "Love Is", "the Morning After", "Laid Back Girl", 'What Goes Up", "In Time", "All Night Long", "Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", and "Twilight". PrinceMusicology ... CD
NPG, 2004. Used ... $2.99
A very strong album by the one-and-only Prince – maybe the catchiest, most rewarding full length by the royal one since the Revolution days! Musicology is most notable for the undeniable exuberance and joy that vibrates from the speakers, track after track. Prince seems to be having fun on this one, and as much as we admired the freaky prog funk of his previous album The Rainbow Children (even if it was pretty damn puzzling), it's great to have these big, Revolution style funk rock party numbers back in the cannon. All praise aside, we have to admit we're just a little bit baffled by the relentless hype and fawning, over-baked love this album has gotten in mainstream publications, but our beef is with toothless entertainment "journalists" and "critics", not with Prince. Highly recommended! Tracks include "Musicology", "A Million Days", "Life O' The Party" ,"Call My Name", "Cinnamon Girl" (not the Neil Young song), "What Do U Want Me 2 Do?", "On The Couch" and more. Boz ScaggsSilk Degrees (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1976. Used ... $18.99
Blue-eyed soul from Boz Scaggs, with a decidedly Philly influenced sound to the production, which we'd hazard a guess comes more from the Hall & Oates side of town than the Sigma Sound axis. Still, this is a solid album with the irresistible hit "Lowdown", still a favorite around these parts. Also includes "Lido Shuffle", "Harbor Lights", "Jump Street" and "What Do You Want The Girl To Do". CD

Blue Note, 1968. Used ... $9.99
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before! Horace shows that he can still pen a hit when he wants – and gave the world the tune "Psychedelic Sally" with this set – but he also displays a penchant for more complicated rhythms and freer horn expressions on beautiful tunes like "Kindred Spirits", "Rain Dance", and "Jungle Juice". The group's filled with great players – from tenor work by Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, trumpet by Charles Tolliver, and drums by a young Billy Cobham! CD

Frank SinatraWhere Are You? (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1957. Used ... $3.99
A sad little album that has Frank still in the throes of the emotional loss expressed on The Wee Small Hours album – working here with Gordon Jenkins arrangements that use a fair bit of strings to well up the darkness that lurks in the songs on the set. The album kicks off with the sublime "Where Are You?", one of the greatest songs of loss we could ever recommend – and then moves into some incredible readings of standards like "Where Is The One", "I'm A Fool To Want You", "I Cover the Waterfront", "Laura", and "Lonely Town" – all done in a style that's emotive, yet never overwrought, perfect sad Sinatra all the way! CD also features 4 bonus tracks – "Don't Worry Bout Me", "Rain (Falling From The Skies)", "It Worries Me", and "I Can Read Between The Lines". CD

Roy AyersVirgin Ubiquity – Unreleased Recordings 1976 to 1981 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. Used ... $7.99
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"! Apple, 1969. Used ... $3.99
Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". An overstuffed album of early greatness – served up with a classic image of the Fab Four on the cover! The tunes are a mix of Lennon/McCartney originals and American soul and rock numbers that are reinterpreted wonderfully by the group – in ways that perfectly show why, unlike most of their contemporaries, The Beatles weren't just trying for slavish imitation of American authenticity – and instead were already taking off with new ideas inspired by the music! Titles include "Please Please Me", "Love Me Do", "Misery", "Anna", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Boys", "Baby IT's You", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Twist & Shout", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Chains". ✨✧ Brian Blade FellowshipPerceptual ... CD
Blue Note, 1999. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Drummer Brian Blade can be a hell of a percussive force when he wants to, but over the years he's maybe made even more of a contribution with records like this – sets that have him acting as a key creative force with a number of other great musicians – all at a richly collaborative level that definitely earns the "Fellowship" name of the group! The album's got an especially great way of mixing together guitar lines and reed passages – in a style that almost evokes older ECM, but with more direction too – thanks to some of Blade's subtle but effectively rootsy rhythms. Musicians include Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano sax, Jon Cowherd on Fender Rhodes and piano, Dave Easley on pedal steel, Kurt Rosenwinkel on electric and acoustic guitar, and Myron Walden on alto sax and bass clarinet – and the record also features guest vocals from Joni Mitchell on the track "Steadfast", and contributions from Daniel Lanois as well. Titles include "Trembling", "Crooked Creek", "Patron Saint Of Girls", and "Evinrude Fifty". CD

✨✧ Bobby Blue BlandTwo Steps From The Blues (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Duke, 1961. Used ... $6.99
An incredible record from Bobby Blue Bland – and quite possibly the greatest one he ever made! The set's got an amazing something special that's unlike most other material of the time – a bit blues, but a lot of soul too – still with some echoes of R&B in the jazzier charts used for the backdrop, but presented with a rock-solid style that definitely points the way towards many sounds and styles to come in the 60s. And although Bland recorded many of these tracks as separate singles, there's a way they're put together here that makes the whole thing sound completely marvelous together – a really well-conceived track list that shows that Bobby's an even greater artist in the space of a full record. The arrangements are perfect, and Bobby's rough soulful voice is blended in this amazing way with killer horn arrangements that are far more sophisticated than most stuff that ever came after this, and which never get in the way, but only back up his deep emotion. The album's a motherlode of classics by the man, with gems that include "Two Steps From The Blues", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Don't Want No Woman", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Don't Cry No More", "Lead Me On", and "I Pity The Fool". And hell, even his version of "St James Infirmary" is pretty wonderful – something we never thought we'd say about that song. CD

Most of these songs are pretty hard to get a hold of on vinyl any more, and though the package is a bit low budget, this is still a great set of some of the Ice Man's best numbers. Tracks include "He Will Break Your Heart", "For Your Precious Love", "Find Another Girl", "I Don't Want To Hear Anymore", "I Stand Accused", "Let It Be Me", "Never Give You Up, "Hey, Western Union Man", and "Only The Strong Survive". Terry CallierAbout Time – The Terry Callier Story 1965 to 1982 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A label-spanning look at the music of Terry Callier – one that starts with his folksy roots, runs through his sublime soul at Chess, and ends with some of his overlooked modern soul numbers from the early 80s! There's been a few other Callier collections on the market, but this one's got the best vibe of all of them – as it really goes out of its way to paint the full picture of Terry's unique music – by weaving together tunes that touch on his strongest moments of genius, and mixing those with some surprising gems that haven't been reissued before! Especially rare bits include the previously unissued "Hangman" – recorded for Cadet in the early 70s; a 45 mix of "You're Going To Miss Your Candyman"; the Erect Records cuts "I Don't Want To See Myself Without You" and "If I Could Make You Change Your Mind", both only issued on 12" single; and the early soul 45 "Look At Me Now". Other tracks include "It's About Time", "Dancing Girl", "Occasional Rain", "Martin St Martin", "Until Tomorrow", "I Don't Want Nobody Else", "Turn You To Love", "Be A Believer", "What Color Is Love", and "Ordinary Joe". Terry CallierAlive ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2001. Used ... $7.99
Brilliant work by Terry Callier – and his greatest album in years! If you, like us, have loved Terry's older work, but been a bit disappointed by the heavy production of recent albums, then you'll probably love this excellent live set – recorded recently at London's Jazz Cafe, with small combo jazz backing that really brings out the best of Terry's sound! The group's got a warmly soulful sound that really adds a lot to Terry's vocals – yet which also lets them stand out in all their jazzy folksy brilliance. The mix of electric piano, guitar, and saxes is some of the best support Terry could hope to have in recent years – and it returns him to the glory of his classic years at Cadet, like no other recent recording we've heard. Songs are great, production is wonderful, and the album's one you'll proudly stack with your classic work by this legendary Chicago soul singer! Titles include "People Get Ready", "Step Into The Light", "Lament For The Late AD", "Timepiece", "African Violet", "Ordinary Joe", "Dancing Girl", "You're Gonna Miss Your Candy Man", and "I Don't Wanna See Myself". Betty CarterModern Sound Of Betty Carter (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
ABC (Japan), 1960. Used ... $12.99
A landmark album from vocalist Betty Carter – not her first time in the recording studio, but maybe one of the first full length sets to really communicate all the genius she was bringing to the field of jazz vocals in the postwar years! The record is one of Carter's more sophisticated sessions, and it's one of the few from the old days to really capture her jazzy vocals well in a large group setting – using arrangements from Richard Wess to bring some nice modern currents to the proceedings. As always, Betty handles the material with a great deal of class, and an incredible sense of poise and emotion – and thee set list is nice, too, and includes many lesser-known tracks – like "For You", "Jazz (Ain't Nothin' But Soul)", "Don't Weep For the Lady", "My Reverie", and "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire". Ray CharlesComplete Country & Western Recordings – 1959 to 1986 ... CD
Rhino/ABC, Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Mid 80s. Used 4CD & Book ... $32.99
Sublime stuff! Sure, it's easy to sit back and say that you don't really dig Ray Charles albums that mix together country music and soul, and that you prefer his hard raw raunchy Atlantic recordings from the earlier days. But let's be honest, Ray really made his biggest splash with this stuff – and although it became extremely popular over the years, it's also part of a huge country soul tradition that's a very accurate representation of the rich crossover culture going on in southern soul, a tradition that for some reason always gets underplayed by folks who want to carve up the world in easy racial lines. Truth is, Ray was not the only soul artist to embrace country, and we can think of a host of others – including Solomon Burke, Ivory Joe Hunter, Joe Simon, Clarence Carter, Brook Benton, and Bobby Womack who all participated in this rich tradition. This set's essential if you're interested in checking out this side of Ray's career – and the price is pretty nice, considering that you get 4CDs, a great book, and 92 songs in all! Work is pulled from Ray's classic ABC sides in the format, plus others from before and after that generation. Titles include "A Born Loser", "I'm Movin On", "Busted", "Crying Time", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Half As Much", "No Letter Today", "Oh Lonesome Me", "Ring Of Fire", "What Am I Living For", "Let Your Love Flow", "Down In The Valley", and "Take These Chains From My Heart". Impulse (Japan), 1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but also showing even some of the sharper edges that John would explore with the group after this one – a beautiful swan song to the lineup of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Things soar with a hell of a lot of spirituality, yet never get too overindulgent to lose their groove – and titles include "Amen", "Dearly Beloved", "Ascent", "Attaining", and "Sun Ship". CD

DeodatoSomewhere Out There ... CD
Atlantic, 1989. Used ... $4.99
Way more pop than jazz from Deodato – a record that has the keyboardist working with a trio of younger vocalists who alternate lyrics on each track in the set! The approach here takes off from Deodato's strong soul production and arranging work of earlier years, but has a bit more of a crossover sound overall – still echoing strains of his R&B side in the rhythms, yet exposing the real agenda a bit more in the lead vocals of the tunes. Keyboards aren't nearly as important to the sound as the drum programs on the record – and titles include "Everybody Wants To Be My Girl", "Where Can You Run", "When A Lover Says Goodbye", "Forever For You", "Stay With Me", and "Somewhere Out There". MCA, Late 70s. Used ... $6.99
Excellent middle period work by the Dramatics – recorded after their years at Stax, with a slightly smoother groove, and featuring some great tunes that really sparkle! By this point, the group were hitting a Detroit modern mode – with less of the rough edges of the Stax work, which meant that the harmonies were even tighter than ever – perfectly placed on the best cuts, with a precision you wouldn't have expected a few years earlier. Songwriting is still great – and this 16 track set features many fine numbers from their ABC LPs of the late 70s when the group were working with Don Davis. Titles include "Be My Girl", "Love Is Missing From Our Lives", "Door To Your Heart", "Stop Your Weeping", "Shake It Well", "You're Foolin You", and "Do What You Want Be What You Are", one of the greatest 70s ballad tracks ever! The album features amazingly restrained arrangements by Billy May – a mix of jazz and strings that has a sadder, deeper style than before – one that certainly fits the "with feeling" claim of the title. Tracks include "Once More With Feeling", "Stormy Weather", "I Love You", "With Every Breath I Take", "Secret Love", and "As Time Goes By". Art FarmerSoul Eyes ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1992. Used ... $9.99
Never-failing genius from Art Farmer – recording here in his later years, and working in that long and open-ended mode we love so much! There's few trumpeters who could make a record like this work – but Farmer's got a tremendous ability to stretch out on longer tunes with well-crafted solos that make beautiful use of soundspace and texture – letting his trumpet almost float along in the air and find its own notes, while the trio of Geoff Keezer piano, Kenny Davis bass, and Lewis Nash on drums provide just the right sort of accompaniment. The album's got a grace that matches any of Art's excellent mid 70s sides from Japan – and is proof that his talents never waned as the years went on – making him one of the few talents from his generation who continued to create and invent beautifully over time. Titles include "Soul Eyes", "Isfahan", "Will You Still Be Mine", "Sad To Say", "Time On My Hands", and "Recorda Me". CD

Pablo (Japan), 1973. Used ... $18.99
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways that are completely sublime, and a very nice change from some of Ella's fuller band recordings of the few years before this album. And far from being sleepy, the intimacy of the record almost seems to set a new kind of fire – one that comes from the gentle persona of Ella, which is a far cry from the glass-breaking singer that she'd come to be known as in the mainstream! Titles include "Take Love Easy", "Once I Loved", "Lush Life", "You're Blase", "A Foggy Day", "I Want To Talk About You", and "You Go To My Head". CD

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongPorgy & Bess ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... $3.99
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". The set was recorded in Tokyo, and features Joao on voice and guitar – with no other instrumentation at all – replicating the feel of some of his sparest classic work, with a style and approach that seems even better with age. There's a waning sadness to the whole set that's really compelling – the weight of years that somehow makes classic tunes sound even more meaningful than before! 15 tracks in all – with titles that include "Aos Pes Da Cruz", "Bolinha De Papel", "Louco", "Pra Que Discutir Com Madame", "Doralice", "Este Seu Olhar", and "Preconceito". Benny GolsonGroovin' With Golson ... CD
New Jazz/OJC, 1958. Used ... $12.99
A wonderful small combo session from tenorist Benny Golson – one of a few key albums like this from the early years! Although Golson is perhaps best known as a lively arranger in the modern idiom, he's also a kick-ass tenor player when he wants to be – and on this classic, he definitely wants to be! Unlike some of Golson's more tightly arranged records of the early years, this date is a deeply gutsy soul jazz session – support from a group that includes Ray Bryant on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Blakey on drums, and Curtis Fuller on trombone – all sliding into long tracks that have plenty of room for solos! The whole thing's a bit like the more spontaneous side of the Jazz Messengers groove – and titles include "The Stroller", "Drumboogie", "My Blues House", and a beautiful version of "Yesterdays". CD

Al Green and Willie Mitchell return for another soul treasure – delivering on the promise of 2003's wonderful I Can't Stop as strongly as we could have hoped for! This one may be credited to The Reverend Al Green rather than just Al Green – but that's the biggest difference between this album and its predecessor. Once again, it's hard to imagine another legend of the late 60s through the 70s jumping back in the ring with such magnificent results as The Reverend – and his partner Willie Mitchell brings his best, too! Every note Al hits resonates warmth and joy, and Willie Mitchell's production is on fire. Everything's OK, indeed! Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $8.99
Rare English language recordings from the sublime Francoise Hardy – music that's every bit as wonderful as her famous French recordings – and even more compelling to our Anglo-styled ears! The vocals are wonderful – sung with this sense of darkness that's almost got an echo of Nico at points, given the accent – set to backings that balance this darkness with a bit more light, but never in ways that are overly poppy – and which definitely continue that more sophisticated style that Hardy always brought to her music! There's less "yeh yeh" to the tracks than a few years before – and Francoise is definitely digging deeper music at this point in her career – sometimes with a breathy brilliance that's a bit like Jane Birkin too. Titles include "Bown Bown Bown", "Till The Morning Comes", "Loving You", "In The Sky", "Midnight Blues", "Magic Horse", "Song Of Winter", "Strange Shadows", "Ocean", "The Garden Of Jane Delawney", "Sometimes", "Let My Name Be Sorrow", "Times Passing By", "I Just Want To Be Alone", and "Suzanne". One of the only two vocal jazz albums that the Blue Note label recorded back in the day – and a haunting batch of tracks from a young Sheila Jordan! The style here is quite different than that of Jordan's later, more experimental records – and this early session shows her as an extremely talented young vocalist, with a unique approach that adds a sparkling modernist touch to familiar tunes – yet which still keeps things in a relatively more straightforward fashion. There's a great mixing of older and newer visions in the set – not just in Jordan's vocals, but also in the small combo backing by the trio of Barry Galbraith on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Denzil Best on drums. Bettye LavetteScene Of The Crime ... CD
Anti, 2007. Used ... $4.99
The long-overdue return of Bettye Lavette to Muscle Shoals – the scene of her ill-fated album for Atlantic Records from the early 70s – hence the title of this album! The style here is certainly classic, and very old school – with backings provided by The Drive-By Truckers, whose member Patterson Hood has family ties back to the older Muscle Shoals scene of the 60s and 70s – and classic southern soul keyboardist Spooner Oldham joins the group wonderfully on electric piano for most of the record, bringing a sweetly warm style to the backings that sounds great next to the time-sharpened edges of Bettye's vocals. As with other Anti label efforts of this type, the sound is respectfully classic – no attempt made to update Lavette's style at all, and none of the cheesier bluesy material that Bettye might have been forced to sing, were she working with a lesser label. Titles include "Choices", "Jealousy", "You Don't Know Me At All", "I Still Want To Be your Baby", "Somebody Pick Up My Pieces", "Talking Old Soldiers", "Before The Money Came", and "I Guess We Shouldn't Talk About That Now". ✨✧ Harold MabernFew Miles From Memphis/Rakin' & Scrapin' ... CD
Prestige, 1968/1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A tremendous set of soul jazz piano work – and two of the strongest 60s albums as a leader from pianist Harold Mabern! At the time of these records, Mabern had been lending his talents to a variety of artists in a variety of scenes – including the Chicago soulbop recordings of the MJT+3, the lyrical New York sides of Frank Strozier, and the modal grooving of mid 60s Lee Morgan on Blue Note. But here, he takes off with a whole new voice – dipping back into his soulful roots in the Memphis scene, yet still also displaying a talent for angling together a great batch of players – clearly picked up in his Blue Note years. The grooves open and unfold with a very catchy sort of rhythm that's often very much in the mode of Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Blue Mitchell at their late 60s best – and players on the sessions include George Coleman and Buddy Terry on saxes, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Bill Lee on bass, and Hugh Walker and Walter Perkins on drums. Titles include many tasty originals – with tunes that include "A Treat For Bea", "To Wane", "Rakin & Scrapin", "Aon", "Syden Blue", "B&B", "Walkin Back", and a nice electric piano version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine". Sublime soul from The Main Ingredient – a collection of cuts from their classic early 70s years at RCA – a time when they were topping the charts with their wonderful harmonies! The group here features Geoffrey Keezer on keyboards, Ron Blake on saxes, and Terreon Gully on drums – really hitting the kit with a pounding intensity to match McBride's pulsating work on both acoustic and electric basses – jamming here a lot strongly than we remember from other studio sides. The expanded package is presented (amazingly) at the same price as a regular CD – and offers plenty of long tracks to really hear this great band stretch out in a space that's nicely between conventional jazz and some of the looser modes of the jamband underground. Guest appearances include Charlie Hunter, DJ Logic, Scratch, Eric Krasno, and Jason Moran – and titles include "Say Something", "Clerow's Flipped", "Lejos De Usted", "Sonic Tonic", "Hibiscus", "Sitting On A Cloud", "Mwandishi Outcome Jam", "Lower East Side", "See Jam Hear Jam Feel Jam", "E Jam", and "D Shuffle Jam". Lots of jams! CD

Dream Of You is one of Helen's best from the 50s, thanks to some great arrangements from Gil Evans! Evans' young and modern talents are a perfect fit for Helen's sadly icy vocals on the set – taking her to new places never reached on some other sessions that were trying for a warmer, sweeter sound. The tunes are all well chosen, too – and the record features a great reading of "Where Flamingos Fly", plus "I'm A Fool To Want You", "I've Never Seen", "He Was Too Good To Me", "By Myself", and "Troubled Waters". Very nice set of Mingus' legendary Candid recordings – produced in 1960, after Mingus angrily departed Columbia records, and was finally given the freedom to work in the way that he wanted. Reprise/Rhino, 1971. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Joni Mitchell – and maybe one of the most go-to records in her legendary catalog! The record set a new high mark for singer/songwriter material in the 70s – and there's an intimate, upfront quality here that's even more striking than Mitchell's early work – personal storytelling, with a slightly poetic vibe, set to spare acoustic backing that really makes the presence of the lyrics stand out even more. Well worth all the praise and attention the album's gotten for decades – with titles that include "All I Want", "My Old Man", "Little Green", "Carey", "Blue", "California", "This Flight Tonight", "River", "A Case Of You", and "The Last Time I Saw Richard". Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1953/1954. Used ... $11.99 18.99
A full length set that compiles earlier sessions cut under either the name of Thelonious Monk or Sonny Rollins – most of them together in the same group! At the time of recording, Monk was an established figure on the bop scene, but Rollins was still a fresh voiced up-and-comer – yet they work together beautifully here on an early take of "Friday The Thirteenth" which really benefits from Rollins' voicing on tenor, next to Monk's angular arrangement. The pair also perform "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want To Be Happy" with a quartet – twisting the familiar tunes into strongly Monkish territory – and the album's last 2 tracks, "Nutty" and "Work" are performed by Monk with a trio that includes Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. ✨✧ Joe MooneyHappiness Of Joe Mooney/Greatness Of Joe Mooney ... CD
Koch, 1964/1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Two solid mid 60s albums from the Joe Mooney – who by the mid 60s had segued from a moderately successful jazz organist into a surprisingly solid nightclub crooner! On The Happiness Of. . . and The Greatness. . . LPs, from '64 and '65, Mooney endearingly tackles standards and lesser-known numbers with a smooth confidence, and a nice, heavy tone on the organ. He's accompanied by Gary Burton, Mundell Lowe, George Duvuvier and others. Happiness. . . has the grander, more swinging arrangements. Tracks include "Wait 'Til You See Her", "But Beautiful", "Call Me Irresponsible", "Nobody Else But Me", "Days Of Wine And Roses", "This Is All I Ask" and lots more. Greatness. . . has a more stripped down approach, and the set includes "Cute", "When I Fall In Love", "You Irritate Me So", "She's Not For You", "I Wanna Be Around", "When Sunny Gets Blue" and more. 24 tracks in all. Don Giovanni, 2020. Used ... $13.99
A fantastic album from Mourning A BLKstar – even more powerful than their set dedicated to Eric Garner, and a batch of material that really gets at the righteous energy of this Cleveland combo! The group see themselves as part of the James Baldwin tradition of the artist bearing witness – and their genre-bending, gender non-confirming style really pushes forward the energy of underground soul music – as they worked together in an empty storefront in Cleveland to craft this beautiful cycle of songs initial sketches they all fleshed out together – in a mix of shifting vocal leads, heavy drums, dark guitar lines, and proud horn parts. Titles include "Sense Of An Ending", "Something JD Said", "Been Around", "Devil Get Behind Me", "Whom The Bell Tolls", "The Wants", "Deluze (Solange say rmx)", "So Young So", "The Box", and "4 Days". A striking session for Anita O'Day – and a refreshing change from her work of the 50s! This one has Anita singing with arrangements by Gary McFarland, a mix of easy jazz styles that show a more sophisticated side to her voice – a bit more careful than before, with more hidden in the background, and less of the in your face style of years past. Anita really rises to the challenge of the hip material – and does a great job with songs like "Senor Blues", "One More Mile", "A Woman Alone With The Blues", "I Want To Sing A Song", and "The Ballad Of The Sad Young Men". 100% Pure PoisonComing Right At You (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Soul Brother/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. Used ... $22.99
One of the rarest soul records of the 70s – recorded in Germany by a bunch of American servicemen on leave, but with a sound that's right out of the Chicago or Detroit groove of the pre-disco years! The group's great with both the funky and soulful material – hitting hard with monster groovers like "Holes In My Shoes" and the jazzy break classic "Windy C", and keeping it sweet and mellow on ballads like "My Little Someone" and "Boarding Pass". The album's got a great sound overall – almost like some of the jazzy soul albums on Fantasy from the mid 70s – and the quality of the vocals and instrumentation is great throughout. Titles include "I Love You", "Bet You Say You Want To Make It With Me", "No More City, No More Country", and "You Keep Me Coming Back". CD

Here's where it all happens – the huge culmination of all the years of heavy funk and psychedelic soul created by George Clinton and the P-Funk empire – fused into an amazingly tight groove that helped win over much bigger audiences than ever before! The album title and cover are very fitting – as George Clinton launches the mothership, forges his classic space-funk image, and blows the P-Funk empire into an arena-filling mega-star act – all with grooves that are still some of the tightest, sharpest funk you'll ever hear – all these many decades later. The instrumentation is razor-sharp – played by giants like Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins, and Bernie Worrell – and the lyrics still have all the edginess and naughtiness of the earlier years – tied together wonderfully to make a very unified album, and one that's full of classics too! Titles include "Mothership Connection (Star Child)", "Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples", "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Handcuffs", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", and "Unfunky Ufo". Blue Note (Japan), 1968. Used ... $24.99
Rare work by Hammond organ giant Big John Patton – recorded in 1968, but never issued until 1995, and even then, only briefly! The record features Patton at his finest – stretching out from his basic soul jazz roots, into a more searching use of the organ that's undoubtedly influenced by Larry Young's work at the same time. The record features great work by Harold Alexander on flute and tenor, plus trumpet by Vincent McEwan, drums by George Brown, and added conga by Richard Landrum. The groove is somewhere between 60s soul jazz and modal – and the tracks are long, with that heavy Patton swing! One of the moogiest records of all time – a legendary LP of "electronic pop music of the future" – sourced and claimed as an influence by everyone from Stereolab to the Beastie Boys! There's a simple magic here that has made the album hold up for years, and stand apart from a legion of later imitators with a clear, simple, and effective style that makes the best of all the bleeps and blonks in the set! Houston PersonBroken Windows, Empty Hallways/Sweet Buns & Barbeque ... CD
Prestige, 1972. Used ... $9.99
2 sides of sweet electric grooving from Houston Person – records that feature his soulful tenor set in larger arrangements than on his earlier small combo Prestige sessions, in a mode that's a bit like some of the larger jazz sets coming out on CTI and Kudu at the time! Like Stanley Turrentine, who also made a similar shift during this period, Houston turns out to be an extremely strong soloist in this sort of setting – hitting new notes on the laidback ballads, and playing with a richly expressive style that somehow seems even more possible than before, since the core rhythms and melodies are handled by the other players in the ensemble, and Houston's main job is just to blow freely on his solos. There's a few funky numbers on the set, but the mellow tracks are actually pretty darn great too – thanks to work by players that include Bernard Purdie, Joe Beck, Ron Carter, Ernie Hayes, and Grady Tate. Titles include "Sweet Buns & Barbeque", "Put It Where You Want It", "Groove Thang", "Down Here On The Ground", "Let's Call This", "The Pimp", "A Song For You", and "This Masquerade". CD

Philadelphia ExperimentPhiladelphia Experiment ... CD
Ropeadope/Atlantic, 2001. Used ... $7.99
A now-legendary set from the Philadelphia underground at the start of the century – a package that reminds us just how much great music has always been going on in the city, often far from the mainstream! This set corrected that fact, by bringing together a trio of three genre-stepping musicians – drummer Questlove, jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine, who plays some great Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 on the set! The core grooves are by the trio, working together in a way that's not that different from the freestyle funk of Medeski, Martin, & Wood back when they used to care a bit more about the groove – and the group's joined on a few tracks by guests, including Pat Martino on guitar, Jon Swana on trumpet, and Larry Gold on cello. The best cuts on the set have a hard beat underneath, warm rolling basslines, and washes of keyboards over the top to keep things nice and sweet. Titles include "The Miles Hit", "Call For All Demons", "Grover", "Ain't It The Truth", "Mister Magic", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Lesson #4". CD

Strange & Beautiful, 1999. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Not a bad little side project from actor/musician John Lurie – who's working here under the guise of a mysterious blues musician! That gimmick is maybe the worst part of the record – as the music is clearly new, and hardly classic blues at all – but if you can get past it, the record's actually got a heck of a lot of charm in a Tom Waits sort of way – and makes us wish that Lurie had done even more material like this, maybe even under his own name – which would only push his strong personal even further into the music. The album features work from Evan Lurie, Marc Ribot, and John Medeski – and titles include "Wanna Wanna", "I'm A Doggy", "Small Car", "Runnin Round", and "Arms & Legs". CD

✨✧ Sun RaNuclear War ... CD
Unheard Music Series/Atavistic, 1982. Used ... $28.99
Long-overdue reissue of one of Ra's greatest moments! The song "Nuclear War" is to Ra's 80s career what "Space Is The Place" was to his 70s one – a bona-fide hit, played with a catchy groove, and a chorus that was a great hook into new audiences at the time. It's got a political lyric, and a back/forth rhythmic approach that shows that the Arkestra could still hit a good groove when they wanted to! The other tracks on the album have a more straightforward approach – heading into Ra's straighter 80s side, a mix of traditional jazz tunes performed with organ, synthesizer, tenor, alto, baritone, trumpet, and percussion. There's still plenty of oddness in the mix – and Ra's work on organ and synth give the record an eerie edge that gets a bit funky on other tunes. Titles include "Nameless One No 2", "Celestial Love", "Drop Me Off In Harlem", and "Retrospect". CD

✨✧ Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus ... CD
Abkco, 1968. Used ... $4.99
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Bassist Marlene Rosenberg leads a hell of a trio here – one that features Kenny Barron on piano and Lewis Nash on drums – both tremendous players who sound even better in the round, rich company of Rosenberg's bass! Most titles are trio numbers, but driven as much by the bass as by the always-wonderful work of Barron – and the tunes include many originals by Marlene – instrumentals, but with a current of the more righteous energy promised by the title. One exception is the great "Not The Song I Wanna Sing" – a number that has Rosenberg on vocals while Christian McBride handles the bass – alongside other vocal contributions from Thomas Burrell and Robert Irving III – which help make the song the most political number on the set. Titles include "The Line Between", "American Violet", "Togetherness", "And Still we Rise", "Visions", "The Barron", "Rain", "Love's In Need Of Love Today", and "Not The Song I Wanna Sing". CD

RCA/Mosaic, 1955. Used 3 CDs ... $46.99 54.99
A massive set of music recorded for RCA in 1955 – five classic albums, all featuring shifting lineups of players related to the Count Basie Band! The style here is often a bit more modern than most Basie work, but still also shows an undeniably strong sense of rhythm – one that comes into play wonderfully with the tighter RCA approach to hornwork of the 50s – which often brings out some of the sharper edges of the players. Although the material's been partially issued separately over the years, this complete Mosaic package is a real delight through and through – as it brings together all albums in one set, showing shared players and a very similar sensibility running through all the record. Albums include The Natural Seven, led by Al Cohn on tenor and featuring Joe Newman on trumpet and Freddie Green on guitar; Mr Rhythm, led by guitarist Green, and featuring Newman, Cohn, and trombonist Henry Coker; Lullaby Of Birdland, a leaderless date with Newman, Cohn, and Green, plus Frank Rehak on trombone and Ernie Wilkins on alto; I'm Still Swinging, led by newman with Cohn on tenor, Urbie Green on trombone, and Gene Quill on alto; and The Jazz Workshop Four Brass One Tenor – a set that has Cohn's tenor with trumpets from Newman, Thad Jones, Joe Wilder, Bernie Glow, Phil Sunkel, and Nick Travis – each playing in shifting lineups.
