A great early set from singer Judy Niemack – one done with great accompaniment from trumpeter Simon Wettenhall – whose instrument is almost an equal voice in the recording! Solo material from pianist Al Haig – a set that shows him in really great form for the 70s! Al's playing mostly familiar numbers here – and his approach is warmly sensitive throughout – still as fluid on the keys as the Haig heard during famous 50s bop years, but with a richer sort of feeling too – a contemplative depth that really makes these tunes sparkle – taking them far past the simple evergreens that might have become in a more standard trio setting. Wonderful late 50s work by Yusef Lateef – played in that "jazz exotic" style he was using to perfect form at the time, a mixture of the lyrical hard bop of the Horace Silver group, with some of the more spare and eastern styles used by groups like the early Sun Ra Arkestra. The drummer, Frank Gant, makes ample use of brushes and mallets to keep the rhythms in a mode that works with the overall sound – and other players include trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer and pianist Hugh Lawson, both of whom were part of the super-hip Detroit scene that spawned Lateef. An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Gene Page and Solomon Burke did the music for this obscure blacksploitation film starring Raymond St. Jacques – and although it's not the greatest funky soundtrack you can buy, it's got more than its share of nice moments! There's a bunch of nice instrumentals by Page that are kind of in a mode that's expanded from his work on Blacula, plus a few vocal cuts by Solomon in his "transitional" phase that feature him trying for a hipper sound than on his earlier Atlantic albums. The record's still in the spare trio mode of the early Jimmy Smith years – but is a bit lighter and more lyrical than before – a nice change from the harder tones of Jimmy's early trio records, and a hint and the expansive lines he'd take on later recordings! The lineup features mostly Kenny Burrell on guitar and Philly Joe Jones on drums – plus a few additional tracks that use Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums – and titles include "These Foolish Things", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "One For Philly Joe", and a nice version of Monk's "Hackensack". You can't get any more classic Benny Golson than this – a sublime late 50s album that features Benny with a sextet, working out amazing versions of the sorts of material that set him apart from every other jazz arranger of the time! The tracks here are complicated, yet have a rootsy soulfulness that makes them instantly compelling – and Benny's tone on tenor sax is sharp and angular, yet also has a raspiness that gives it a degree of honesty you wouldn't expect from a budding young modernist. The rest of the players – Max Roach, Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly, JJ Johnson, and Kenny Dorham – are equally great, too – and amidst Benny's arrangements, they come together as if they'd been playing in this format for years! Rare material from John Coltrane – tracks that were done for Bethlehem Records at a time when he was just rising up as a leader, and still contributed work as a sideman! The album features Trane playing tenor on only four of the album's eight tracks – making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title – but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs – possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing – but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music. Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups – such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date – but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work – on titles that include "She Didn't Say Yes", "Turtle Walk", "At Home With The Blues", "Seabreeze", and "Love & The Weather". The third album by the Chicago Gangsters – recorded after they began working out of their native Ohio, and not the Chicago studio scene, hence the dropping of "Chicago" from their name! The record has the band moving into a smooth funky modern soul style – with some good harmony vocals, and lots of very nice production with a slinky sexy style. The record includes the band's great "Wop That Wandy", a nice track with a cool funk groove that mixes 2 guys shooting the breeze, with sweet soulful vocals by a female singer on the chorus.
