Bob Wilber & Scott HamiltonBob Wilber & The Scott Hamilton Quartet ... LP
Chiaroscuro, 1977. Very Good+ ... $3.99
One of the records that really put saxophonist Scott Hamilton on the map – a well-matched set with reedman Bob Wilber, and a date that has each player taking a different end of the sonic spectrum! Wilber blows alto, soprano, and clarinet – often with a style that maybe hints at trade, but with more swing strengths overall – which Hamilton really amplifies with his well-blown, well-toned solo work. Other group members include Chris Flory on guitar, Phil Flanagan on bass, and Chuck Riggs on drums – and the use of a guitar instead of a piano really makes for a fresh flavor on the date. Titles include "Puggles", "Freeman's Way", "Riff", "Time After Time", "Treasure", "Jonathan's Way", and "144 West 54th". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring & edge wear, cutout hole.)

✨✧ Scott HamiltonSwinging Young Scott ... LP
Famous Door, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the earliest albums as a leader from tenorist Scott Hamilton – definitely the young talent promised in the title, but already one with a very traditional sense of tone and timing! Hamilton's horn takes the lead, but gets strong support from Warren Vache on trumpet – whose well-crafted, economical lines never overwhelm the solos of the leader! The group's also got very deft piano work from John Bunch – who may well be the secret hero of the record – plus bass from Michael Moore and drums from Butch Miles. Scott's got this great rasp in his tone on some of the best numbers – a quality that hardly belies his age at all – and which has echoes of Lester Young and Ben Webster at their best. Titles include "Scott's Idea", "Thru For The Night", "Imagination", and "Warren's Rush". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jess RodenPlayer Not The Game ... LP
Island, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The continuing evolution of the great Jess Roden – an lesser-known 70s talent who emerged from the jazz rock scene in the UK at the end of the 60s – but who's working here in a much more sophisticated mode! Jess always had a lot of soul in his style right from the start – that 60s London love of R&B and American roots – and here he fuses it with some hip arrangements from Leon Pendarvis, who takes the older Roden groove into sweet New York territory that comes across with a surprising degree of modern soul at times. There's lots of jazz in the instrumentation – including sax solos from Harold Vick and Scott Hamilton – and Jess has honestly never sounded better – extremely expressive, even on the mellower moments. Titles include "The Hardest Blow", "Drinking Again", "Sensation", "Misty Roses", "Woman Across The Water", and "The Quiet Sound Of You & I". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Includes the heavy inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner.)
