Easily our favorite album by Baikida Carroll – a wonderfully spiritual session cut in Paris, and done with this open-ended, spacious sound that seems to bring AACM improvisation into play with some of the global currents that were happening overseas at the time! As on an AACM date, most players handle a fair bit of instruments – Carroll on trumpet, flugelhorn, seal horn, and percussion; Oliver Lake on soprano, alto, tenor, flute, and percussion too; and the great Nana Vasconcelos on lots more percussion – including cuica, tablas, timbales, bells, and more as well! Manuel Villardel plays both acoustic and electric piano – and the tunes build through these great improvisations between the horns and percussion, often with long, cyclical styles that are completely hypnotic! Wild sounds in a range of different styles – jazz, rock, and more outside modes – all served up in support of a legendary list made years ago by the group Nurse With Wound! The list was a secret guide to all things weird and unusual – put together decades back, and now famous as kind of a Rosetta Stone for stepping into music from the farther left side of the spectrum – here served up from a range of German recordings from back in the day, most recorded during a key moment when the scene was really breaking down boundaries in styles! A fantastic set from the Sudanese scene of the 70s – served up by a group who've definitely got all the jazz promised in the title, but who also have a special vibe that's all their own! The rhythms are nicely jagged – sometimes rolling and romping, almost with a South African jazz approach – other times a bit more stark, and almost always topped by superb reed lines that almost echo some of the Ethiopian jazz styles of the period – but again, with a very special sound of their own! A number of tunes have vocals – nicely snakey, and not entirely tied to the rhythms – and there's also lots of cool organ in the group, too – over riffing guitar that moves along strongly with the drums. The sound's a bit hard to sum up in words, but is every bit as cool as you could hope from the cover and title – and tracks include "Nile Waves", "Azzah Music", "Hilwa Ya Amoora", "Bride Of Africa", "Seira Music", "Saat Alfarah", and "Farrah Galbi Aljadeed". Funky sounds from Dan Ubick of Connie Price & The Keystones – and a killer set in this excellent sound library series from Madlib! As with the other volumes, the music has a strong nod to the classic 70s era of sound library funk, but also updates the work strongly too – in this case with the psychedelic funky elements that you'd guess from Dan's previous experience – served up in heavy drums from Connie Price that are often ready for hip hop samples – and colored with strings from Ubick at times, almost at a level that has a slight nod to David Axelrod! Other instrumentation includes guitars, bass, and keyboards – and tunes include "Snakes In The Walls", "El Escorpion", "The Return", "Antenna Up", "Flip Of A Switch", "Spanish Moss", "Black Coffee", "Gris Gris", "Hearts Of Darkness", and "Fly Swatter".
