You know the story. Ry Cooder got tired of playing with Ali Farka Toure, set his sights on another culture to plunder, and the rest is history! Who'd have ever thought the Cuban embargo would create a useful situation for a dried-out rocker to suddenly have great record sales again? Can't blame the old guys for falling for Ry, and you've got to give them credit for doing a good job – but dig this one for the music, and not just because we're Americans who've pretended that Cuba didn't exist for 40 years! ✨✧ Everly BrothersStories We Could Tell/Pass The Chicken & Listen ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Rare RCA Records work from The Everly Brothers – work that's quite different than the simple pop of their early years! Stories We Could Tell is a killer set done with producer Paul Rothchild – recorded with heavy help from folks like Ry Cooder, David Crosby, Warren Zevon, Delaney & Bonnie, and other rock luminaries – all brought in to help the Brothers hit a hip sort of country sound in their music. There's echoes of the Roots set on Warner, taken into more contemporary 70s modes – and while the harmonies aren't as tight as in earlier albums, the overall evolution is certainly appreciated. Titles include "Christmas Eve Can Kill You", "Del Rio Dan", "Up In Mabel's Room", "All We Really Want To Do", "Breakdown", "Green River", "Mandolin Wind", "Stories We Could Tell", and "I'm Tired Of Singing My Song In Las Vegas". Pass The Chicken & Listen has the Everly Brothers hearkening a bit towards the past – coming together in warm harmonies, recorded with a country-ish twang by Chet Atkins – who really seems to get the vibe right for this fading chapter in the pair's career. There's a strong undercurrent of sadness that really gives the music a great sound – deeper feelings than standard countrified rock, and a great reminder of the way the Everlys could always bring a little something extra to a record. Titles include "Husbands & Wives", "Ladies Love Outlaws", "Lay It Down", "Woman Don't Try To Tie Me Down", "A Nickel For The Fiddler", and "Paradise". CD

VariousYou Heard Them Here First – Rock's Icons Before They Were Famous ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A really cool little collection – one that features early work by a host of famous rockers and 60s pop acts – many of whom are recording here before using their better-known later names! The music's pulled from both sides of the Atlantic, and often has a nicely rough-edged feel – bits of garage rock, mod soul,a nd more – performed by artists who include Peter Frampton, Mike Nesmith, The Byrds, Cher, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Ry Cooder, Neil Young, Lee Hazlewood, Narry Nilsson, Love, and others! As always with Ace, the notes are great – and really help illuminate these rare gems – and titles include "It's My Time" by The Mynah Birds, "Your Love" by Lewis Reed, "Stop Calling Me Baby" by Danny Lee, "Dream Baby" by Cherilyn, "In The Midnight Hour" by The Pigeons, "I Can Fly" by The Herd, "You Made Me Fall" by Marty Balin, "Prison Break" by The Paramours, "Rumble-Still-Skins" by Arthur Lee & The LAGs, "Groovy Little Suzie" by Bo-Pete, "Can't Let Her See Me Cry" by Mark Robinson, "Hole In My Pocket" by The Rockets, "Candy Man" by The Rising Sons, and "Liza Jane" by Davie Jones with The King Bees. ✨✧ Ibrahim FerrerBuena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer ... CD
World Circuit/Nonesuch, 1999. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the most wonderful things to come out of the Buena Visa Social Club project of Ry Cooder – a record that introduced many Americans to the voice of Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer – a talent from back in the day, but one whose route to US audiences was closed for decades because of politics! We were always a bit skeptical of the sepia-toned attitude of Cooder's project, but this album really stands out – as the warmly sentimental approach works perfectly for Ibrahim's vocals, giving them the right sort of life to cross oceans and boundaries – on titles that include "Silencio", "Herido De Sombras", "Bruca Manigua", "Mami Me Gusto", and "Que Bueno Baila Usted". CD
(Out of print. Includes slipcase which has light edgewear.)

✨✧ Paul Revere & The RaidersRevolution (expanded mono edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A revolution in sound from Paul Revere & The Raiders – a set that still has some of the party-rocking styles that made them a hit in the 60s, but which also has a hipper, trippier sound at times too! Terry Melcher's really coming into his own as a producer here – and, a bit like with The Byrds, he finds a way to slide in some hipper studio elements to the Raiders' groove – with a bit of session help from Ry Cooder, Glen Campbell, and Taj Mahal – and some nice use of fuzz and echo at times. Mark Lindsay's vocals are great – still with a nice sense of sneer that really brings an edge to the material – and titles include "Upon Your Leaving", "Mo'reen", "Reno", "Him Or Me", "I Hear A Voice", "Ain't Nobody Who Can Do It Like Leslie Can", and "Tighter". CD features 10 bonus tracks – including "Ups & Downs", "Try Some Of Mine", and "Legend Of Paul Revere (unedited version)" – plus stereo mixes of album tracks. CD
