✨✧ Robert NighthawkBricks In My Pillow ... LP
Pearl Records, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Overlooked work from the Chicago blues scene of the postwar years – great material from an important early electric player – but one who never got the large exposure of some of his contemporaries on Chess Records! And yet, back in the day Robert Nighthawk was as important to the development of the Chicago sound as Muddy Waters – wonderfully skilled on the strings, and a hell of a singer too – with a deep baritone that often has a bit of a link to jump blues in the way that Robert delivers his phrasing – although the sound here is definitely Chicago blues overall! All numbers are small combo sides recorded for the United Records label – and players include Roosevelt Sykes and Bob Call on piano, Ransom Knowling on bass, and Jump Jackson drums. Titles include "Brick In My Pillow", "Seventy Four", "Crying Won't Help YOu", "You Missed A Good Man", "Feel So Bad", "U/S Boogie", and "Maggie Campbell". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s issue in a textured cover, with light wear and a trace of a price sticker.)

✨✧ August Greene (Common, Karriem Riggins, & Robert Glasper)August Greene ... LP
August Greene, 2018. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An all-star record from three contemporary forces in soul, hip hop, and jazz – yet one that's also got a nicely lean vibe as well – as the whole thing focuses on the best strengths of all three talents involved! Much of the music features Karriem Riggins on drums, Robert Glasper on keyboards, and Common delivering lyrics – usually with a style that's much more compact and down to earth than some of his own records of the past few decades! Glasper's right at home in the setting, and really helps set the tone – and singer Samora Pinderhughes is on many tracks, balancing out Common's rhymes with her vocals. Other guest singers include Bilal and Brandy – and titles include "Black Kennedy", "Practice", "Fly Away", "Aya", "Let Go", "The Time", "Optimistic", and "No Apologies". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Robert Stigwood OrchestraRobert Stigwood Orchestra Plays Bee Gee's Hits ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A pretty strange little record – instrumental versions of early Bee Gees hits, played by a group under the auspices of their manager, Robert Stigwood. The real talent on the album, though, is British leader Bill Shepherd (not the Chicago producer) – as he arranges and conducts the whole thing, bringing in a nice dream 60s Brit sound to the whole thing. In all, the tunes are a bit softer and less jaunty than their vocal counterparts, but still very much in the Bee Gees mode. Titles include "Holiday", "Words", "Birdie Told Me", "Massachusetts", "Sinking Ships", and "New York Mining Disaster 1941". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Philip Glass/Robert WilsonEinstein On The Beach (4LP Box Set) ... LP
CBS, 1979. Near Mint- 4LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
An amazing record, and one that forever transformed the sound of opera in the US – the amazing summation of all the many musical ideas that Philip Glass had been cooking up since the 60s, done as a mindblowing stage presentation with Robert Wilson! Voices, organ, reeds, and piano come together in wonderful lines that go on and on, seemingly forever, in endless variations and rivulets of sound – as simple in structure as the leaner small combo minimalist work from Glass – but with a very different style in the fuller setting, with a sonic quality that still is as groundbreaking today as it was back in the 70s! The great compilation of early 80s singles by Robert Wyatt – as timeless, inventive and awe inspiring as some of his best proper LPs – and essential Wyatt however you want to approach it! Titles include the original "Born Again Wyatt", but there's a number of pretty amazing cover's in the set, including Chic's "At Last I Am Free" and Ivor Cutler's "Grass" – plus "Caimanera", "Strange Fruit", "Stalingrad" and more. Virgin, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Robert Wyatt's best albums, cut after Wyatt's years with Soft Machine and Matching Mole, and is a perfect blend of his jazz-tinged work with electronics, spacey pop, and madly clever lyricism. The music is at once thoroughly groundbreaking and endlessly charming – and it's one of the best moments in the British experimental rock scene of the 70s, as you can guess by the lineup of players that includes Hugh Hopper, Fred Frith, Ivor Cutler and Mongezi Feza. 6 tracks in all, with 2 versions of "Little Red Riding Hood Hit The Road", "Alifib", "Alife", "Sea Song", and "A Last Straw". MCA, 1986. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
The debut album from Robert Brookins – an artist who first made waves in the group Afterbach, and who also had close ties to the Earth Wind & Fire galaxy in the 80s! This set's got a tightness that definitely belies Robert's years working in the studio for other artists – but the sound is bold enough to be his own, too – confident, yet casual male vocals served up in a prime 80s mode – almost crossover at points, thanks to the production, yet hip enough overall to keep things interesting – especially on some of the mellower, more laidback numbers! Titles include "Our Lives", "If You Only Knew", "You Got Me Runnin", "Sensuality", "Be My Weakness", "Are You Bad Enough", and "In The Night", a duet with Stephanie Mills. LP, Vinyl record album

A straight dramatic score for this 60s western that starred Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot. The style is dramatic and sweeping, and the only slightly groovy number is the vocal theme "Shalako". RCA, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty cool album that features the soundtrack to the chilling Robert Mitchum film – but recast in album form, and linked together with spooky narration by Charles Laughton! Although Mitchum only makes a few appearances on the record, you do hear him singing some of the spooky songs from the film – while Laughton reads the longer story, and Walter Schumann provides some eerie orchestral backdrops! A pretty great audio documentary from the years long before video – when records often had to stand in as the closest thing you'd get towards a home-based experience of a film! Arista, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully smooth soul from Robert Winters & Fall – a great mix of 80s groove and modern mellow – handled with lots of warm touches that make Winters' vocals come off wonderfully! The feel here is a bit like some of the smoother sets from DJ Rogers – as Winters' voice has a deeply soulful quality, but is also set up in some tighter arrangements that seem to take it even farther – augmented by some nice jazzy work on keyboards from time to time, and set up in larger backings from Gene Page. Titles include "Face The Magic", "Touched By You", "Magic Man", "Watchin' You", and "How Can Love Be Wrong". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Edgar VareseMusic Of Edgar Varese – Ionisation/Density 21.5/Integrales/Octandre/Hyperprism/Poeme Electronique – Robert Craft ... LP
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal set of recordings of material from Edgar Varese – key Robert Craft takes on three earlier compositions, and the debut of "Poeme Electronique", which was created at the 1958 Brussels World Fair! "Ionisation" hs a complex mix of percussion instruments, played by thirteen players – with a quality that's almost a key precursor to the music of Harry Partch. "Density 21.5" is a haunting piece for solo flute – filled with unusual tones and textures – and "Integrales" has a fuller orchestral presentation, and a nicely bombastic vibe, with woodwind tones and percussion colliding beautifully! That sound continues in "Octandre" – a 20s composition that shows just how far Varese was ahead of his time – as does "Hyperprism", from the same year, which is even more dramatic. "Poem Electronique" has a very different approach – all analogue electronics, used in an illustration of Varese's concept of "organized sound", but with a feel that's similar to the best musique concrete material of the 50s. ✨✧ Bobby DarinBobby Darin Born Walden Robert Cassotto ... LP
Direction, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible late album from Bobby Darin – and a real treasure! The record was cut after Darin's mid 60s fascination with the work of Tim Hardin, most of which he re-recorded for Atlantic during that time – but it's got a similar style to the Hardin years, yet features some stunning original compositions by Darin. After the confidence of his early show days, it's amazing to hear Bobby D singing songs like this – filled with sadness, insecurity, and kind of a mind-numbing inability to cope with the times. Of course, part of this has to do with Darin's increasingly poor health conditions (he was predicted to live a very short life at an early age) – and the raw honest experimental quality of the album's a real testament to Darin's perpetual struggle to combine a strong professional bent to be a crossover entertainer with an increasing (and surprising) desire to emerge as a creative force on his own. Includes the sublime "I Can See The Wind", plus "Change", "Sunday", "Questions", and "The Proper Gander". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest, straightest sets from Mel Torme – an all-classic batch of tracks that's quite different than his other album for Columbia! Torme checks in as a totally committed, totally serious jazz vocalist here – with an impeccable approach to the music that puts this album right up there with the best work of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett – very mature, but very personal too – in a way that really transforms familiar tunes. Arrangements are by Robert Mersey, who handles Torme with the best care he's had since the classic 50s recordings with Marty Paich – and titles include "PS I Love You", "The Nearness Of You", "Haven't We Met", and "Ho Ba La La". ✨✧ VariousHenry Stone's Miami Sound – The Record Man's Finest 45s ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of music we've ever heard from the legendary TK Records in Miami – a company that was a powerhouse of 70s hits and disco classics – but which also cut some wonderful underground soul at the time! This sublime set looks at that great lesser-known legacy of TK – the hipper, more sophisticated music they cut in between the chart numbers and boogie singles – often by soul artists who had some involvement with bigger acts, but who really got a chance here to shine on their own! There's a surprising amount of funk in the mix – that deeper current that made Miami a key heir to 60s funky styles from Memphis and New Orleans – and there's some equally great modern soul, but served up with a complexity that goes way past the usual – both in the songwriting and arrangements. If you've only heard TK hit collections, you'll find plenty to love here – and even for deeper diggers like us, there's still plenty of new bits to be discovered! Titles include "Confusion" by Leno Phillips, "You Knock Me Out" by Wildflower, "Hey There Jim" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Tears Of The World" by Robert Moore, "I Got Bills To Pay" by Johnny K, "I Want To Be Loved" by Stevens & Foster, "Sleep On Dream On" by Raphael Munnings, "Life Is A Beautiful Feeling" by Formula 1, "Bahama Soul Stew" by Funky Nassau, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "The Silence That You Keep (version 1)" by Milton Wright, and "There Must Be Something" by Friday Saturday & Sunday. ✨✧ Richard EvansRichard's Almanac ... LP
Argo, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare early trio session from bassist Richard Evans – known much more famously for his late 60s soul and jazz arrangements at Chess! The set's not only unique for it's exposure of Evans as a jazz artist, but it also marks one of the first appearances of pianist Jack Wilson – still a part of the Chicago scene at the time of this album, but already playing with the fluid lyricism we love so much from his 60s LA recordings! Wilson's piano is a really key part of the record, and he works a groove that's simply sublime – filled with lots of flowing, gliding touches on the top of the keys, but also coming across with enough of a bottom to give the record plenty of soul! The drummer in the group is Robert Barry, another noteworthy south sider at the time – and titles include "Consu", "The Preacher", "Trees", "Vera", "Should I", and "Daybreak". Nice cover, too, with a young Evans sitting in front of a globe! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sugarcane HarrisSugar Cane's Got The Blues ... LP
MPS, 1973. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A really tripped-out, messed-up session from Don Sugarcane Harris – recorded live in Berlin, but with a freaky experimental style that's much farther out than most of his studio work! The group here is totally hip – a combo of mad hippies that includes Robert Wyatt on drums, Wolfgang Dauner on keyboards and electronics, and both Terje Rypdal and Volker Kriegel on guitars – playing with twin electric frenzy that adds a lot of great sound to the album! Sugarcane plays electric violin and sings just a tiny bit – and despite the "blues" in the title of the record, the album's more of a freaked-out fusion record than anything else – in the best MPS electric tradition of the time, thanks to the presence of Dauner and Kriegel. Titles include "Sugar Cane's Got The Blues", "Where's My Sunshine", "Liz Pineapple Wonderful", and "Song For My Father". LP, Vinyl record album

Nonesuch, Late 1950s. Near Mint- ... $8.99
Although most Nonesuch Explorer sessions were ethnographic ones, recorded in the field by the label's engineers – this one's a studio session, recorded in New York by a group that's reputedly from Ghana, but which seems to be kind of a "fake" one from our perspective. Why? Well, because Charles Earland's playing tenor, for one – and although his native Philly was kind of far away from New York, we never heard it referred to as "Ghana"! Other players here are US-based jazz ones, too – like drummers Sonny Morgan and Robert Crowder, vibist Garvine Masseaux, and bassist George Brooks. The set's still got a strong High Life sound to it – but it also has jazz flourishes, too, in the way that was used some of the Art Blakey Afro-Drum experiments from the same time. Titles include "Ebony", "Bus Conductor", "Saturday Night", and "Sugar Soup". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice document of the scene a the time, with concise performances and a much tighter feel than you might imagine given the circumstances of the recording. 9 numbers in all, including "Driving Me Backwards", "Baby's On Fire", "Heartbreak Hotel", "The End", "May I?", "Shouting IN A Bucket Blues", "Stranger In Blue Suede Shoes", "Everybody's Sometime And Some People's All The Time Blues" and "Two Goes Into Four". ✨✧ John BarryChase ... LP
Columbia, 1966. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A lesser-known moment of genius from John Barry – quite different than his work for the James Bond films of the time! Barry's working here in a mix of more ambitious orchestral themes – dark, brooding, and moody – but also interspersed with some lighter jazzier numbers that are really great too! The film had a short life as a blockbuster – surprising, given that it was directed by Arthur Penn, written by Lillian Hellman, and starring Marlon Brando, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, and Angie Dickinson amidst a host of other well-known talents – but the real charm is almost Barry's music, which olds up really well over the years! Our favorite titles include "Saturday Night Philosopher", "Look Around", "The Beating", "Blues For Bubber", and the sweetly jazzy "I'll Drink To That". And oddly, there doesn't seem to be a single traditional "chase" number in the whole film! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Larry CoryellRestful Mind ... LP
Vanguard, 1975. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Guitarist Larry Coryell really changes it up from before – shedding both some of his electric modes and his vocal inclinations – and also working with a completely different group, who give the record a very unusual sound! Coryell plays a lot of acoustic guitar here, in addition to some electric – and the group also features additional guitar from Ralph Towner – whose open, airy approach really shapes the sound in a different way – but, alongside Larry, also has more force than on his own ECM recordings. The group also features Glen Moore on acoustic bass – but the real highlight may well be Collin Wolcott, who plays tablas and congas – bringing in earthy, global elements that really make some of the best moments shine. Titles include "Julie La Belle", "Song For Jim Webb", "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Ann Arbor", and some improvisations on music by Robert De Visee. LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisDecoy ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
The decoy here might be in the rhythms, which are often electric, but still played live – handled by Robert Irving III on many tracks, with a cool 80s fusion sound that's mighty nice! The style of the album's a nice change from the Miles groove of the 70s – a bit leaner, with almost a Weather Report influence at times, but far less jamming – and still prone to the darker tones that always make Davis' music of these later years surprisingly good. Al Foster handles acoustic drums on some tracks, and other players include Bill Evans on soprano sax and Mino Cinelu on percussion – on titles that include "Decoy", "Robot 415", "Code MD", "Freaky Deaky", "What It Is", "That's Right", and "That's What Happened". Aretha FranklinSoul Sister ... LP
Columbia, 1966. Very Good+ ... $8.99
Aretha Franklin's definitely growing into her role as a soul sister here – a later date for Columbia Records that hints a bit at the sounds to come on Atlantic! Backings are by Robert Mersey and Belford Hendricks – both of whom use some relatively full orchestrations and occasional backing vocals – in ways that almost translate a 60s country soul aesthetic to a leaner, cleaner sound for Aretha's strong vocals. Franklin, as always, is great – the kind of singer that really illuminates any tune she gets – even familiar numbers that seem to take on new life in her hands. The material is a bit deeper-digging than before on Columbia – less covers, and more tunes that are well-suited to Aretha's sensibilities – including a few penned by Van McCoy or Hendricks. Titles include "Until You Were Gone", "Follow Your Heart", "A Mother's Love", "I'm Losing You", "Take A Look", and "Can't You See Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Alexis KornerBootleg Him! ... LP
Warner, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99 24.99
A record with a strange mix of elements on the outside – a confusing title, a proggy-cover image – but one that's got a sound that's a perfect maturation of the fantastic sound of Alexis Korner in the 60s! Korner's one of the overlooked heroes in British music – a strong devotee of American blues, and maybe so much so that sounds more like his inspirations than most – but never in a slavish way, as Alexis is always able to full absorb the sound, and make you feel like it's coming from his own deep soul – and over the years, he really shifted things in these slight, but powerful ways – making his music a huge influence on a big generation of UK rock acts to come. Here, the double-length set is almost a "thanks back" affair – as Korner records with a huge all-star array that includes folks like Robert Plant, Jack Bruce, Charlie Watts, Ginger Baker, Graham Bond, Lol Coxhill, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Ray Warleigh, Harry Beckett, and many more – a fantastic crossroads of all that's hip in British rock, blues, and jazz at the start of the 70s. Titles include "I Got A Woman", "Rockin", "She Foold Me", "I Wonder Who", "Dee", "Love Is Gonna Go", "Clay House Inn", "Evil Hearted Woman", "Mighty Mighty", "Sunrise", and "Hellhound On My Tail". Procol HarumGrand Hotel ... LP
Chrysalis, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Procol Harum check into the Grand Hotel – and check out with one of their greatest albums ever! The set's got that majestic sound that was the group's strongest point – a strange mix of the very personal vocals of Gary Brooker and the expansive blend of piano, organ, and guitar that the group often sent soaring to the skies – augmented here with some perfect use of strings and chorus – never too heavy, but all fused perfectly with the core energy of the sextet! In fact, it's that sense of compression – of folding everything together so well – that really makes the group so great, and such an important precursor for so many acts that were beginning to blossom in the UK scene, using a similar approach in different ways. Yet it's that Gary Brooker/Keith Reid sense of songwriting that still sets these guys apart from anyone else – as you'll hear on titles that include "Grand Hotel", "Tojours L'Amour", "TV Caesar", "A Souvenir Of London", "Robert's Box", "Fires", "For Liquorice John", and "A Rum Tale". Johnny Shines isn't standing at the crossroads at the same time as Robert Johnson, but he's still sounding pretty darn great here – recording this stripped-down set in Cali in 1970, with just his own guitar alongside his vocals! Shines is maybe best known for his Chicago recordings of the postwar years – but the sound here is in a style that actually goes back farther than that, and recalls the modes that Johnny first used when picking up the guitar in the early 30s – a time in which he also crossed paths with Johnson, given a tribute here in the approach of the record.
