A great lost descarga session from the 60s – led by Chihuahua Martinez! Martinez plays both timbales and guiro on the sessions, fronting a group that includes Alberto Valdez on conga, Mike Martinez and Chivirico Davila on coro, Manfredo Lee on guiro, Elpidio Vazquez on piano, Elpidio Vazquez on bass and Pupy Legarreta on flute and violin. The set features some nice vocals by Goody Osvaldo – but there's also a key focus on the instrumentation, with quite a bit of flute in the mix. Nice stuff! That's a sexy-looking lady on the cover – sliding on her cutoffs after a rendezvous in the dark – and the sound of the album definitely fits the image, at least at the start! Stelvio Cipriani begins the music like the story – a bit light and romantic at first, then sliding into tension as the album goes on – marking a point in the narrative where sex turns to suspense, which Stelvio follows by picking up the action on some of the tunes, and dropping into darker moments at others! Edda Dell'Orso delivers a fair bit of wordless vocals on the album, next to keyboard lines from Cipriani – and the whole thing almost feels like a late 70s update of the modes she might have crafted with Ennio Morricone a decade before. Mad funk from Dennis Coffey – and the follow-up to his landmark Evolution album! It's interesting to note that Coffey's group is listed as the "Detroit Guitar Band" – which kind of foregrounds their link between the city's two strongest music sides of the late 60s: the hard heavy rock of groups like The Stooges and MC5, and the still-strong soul industry, of which Coffey was a seminal part. But note also that Coffey's the only guy playing guitar on the record, thanks to the magic of overdubs! Haunting western work from Francesco De Masi – a film score that mixes nice bits of electric guitar and bass in with the larger orchestrations! A number of tracks here also used some great harmonica, too – very much in the best Morricone-styled sound of the period, but warmed up in different directions by some of De Masi's string-based backdrops. The main theme – "Seven Men" – is a doozy – and other tracks include "The Pursuit", "To Durango", "The Massacre", "Stagecoach Attack", "The Night Attack", "Bandits", and "The Man Without A Home". 2 of the greatest soundtracks ever from Francois De Roubaix – both recorded in that magical year of 1967! First up on the set is Les Adventuriers – a mindblowingly wonderful score for a Robert Enrico film, and one that offers a unique blend of jazzy rhythms, western themes, and more – all tied together by an extremely haunting theme! Some tunes have spaghetti western-esque acoustic guitar and whistling, while others have a more Frenchy isolated piano, played with a slightly watery feel – and some others take on a much more driving, almost Francis Lai-like approach. Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. Melissa Errico's maybe not the best-known jazz singer on the scene, but she's very well-remembered for this fantastic set of tunes penned by Michel Legrand – all set to very sublime orchestrations by Legrand himself! The feel here is lush – both in the fullness of Errico's vocals, and in the way Michel sets the tunes up – in a mode that's very different than some of the more laidback interpretations of his work – and at a level that reminds us that, more than most, Legrand has a fantastic sense of instrumental color when given the right tools. Melissa more than matches that energy, with very personal interpretations of Legrand tunes both famous and lesser-known – a set list that includes "Dis Moi", "In Another Life", "I Will Wait For You", "His Eyes Her Eyes", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Celui La", "Once Upon A Summertime", "Maybe Someone Dreamed Us", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". The Funk Ark floats mighty high on this sweet little set – charting a course on the sea of grooves with strong currents of African and Latin rhythms in the mix! The group are a funk combo at the core, but they've got a great ear for all sounds global – complex rhythms, unusual instrumental inflections, and a forward-moving groove that's able to pull in plenty of different strands, and keep things funky throughout! A wonderfully groovy soundtrack – one we'd never heard before, and a set that's filled with great little numbers in a range of different styles! The main theme is filled with percussion – really hard-driving drums that are chased by this echoey piano bit that's totally cool, and very unique! Some other sweet tracks have a gentle bossa-styled groove – including one with wordless vocals from Edda Dell'Orso – and other numbers have a different vibe, one that's a bit gentler, and almost sentimental at times, but pretty great too. There's also a few cuts that are more stark and moody – a bit towards Morricone horror fare, but not entirely – and the reissue features a whopping 27 tracks in all, most of which are short, compelling numbers! A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty! This album was recorded live, in 1964, when Stan Getz was playing with his quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes – an incredible lineup that made for some wonderfully moody sounds! The vibes/tenor approach was a high point in Getz's career – especially as the young Burton could create these beautiful washes of sound that were a perfect counterpoint to Getz's breathy playing. And although Astrud Gilberto is thrown into the mix here to give the album a bit of bossa appeal – vocals on 6 titles that include "Corovado", "Eu E Voce", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "One Note Samba", "Only Trust Your Heart", and "The Telephone Song" – there's also 4 more tracks that are all instrumental, and which show the Getz/Burton union in all of its glory! These tracks include "6 Nix Pix Flix", "The Singing Song", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "Summertime". And for reference, the rest of the group includes Gene Cherico on bass and Joe Hunt on drums – but on 3 tracks, Chuck Israels plays bass instead of Cherico, and on a few others, Helcio Milito plays drums instead of Hunt, and Kenny Burrell joins in on guitar. Fantastic Stan Getz material from the 60s – a beautiful live set recorded right around the same time as Stan's Getz-A-Go-Go album – and, like that one, also features great vibes from Gary Burton and a bit of guest vocals from Astrud Gilberto! The main focus is on Stan's core sound with the group – those tremendously open lines that he started to blow in the post-bossa years – from this really under-recorded time in his career, with a sound that most folks didn't hear fully until his classic Sweet Rain album a few years later. In addition to Burton, the core group also features Gene Cherico on bass and Joe Hunt on drums – and on a few of the final tracks, Chet Baker plays some guest flugelhorn. Way more than just a soundtrack – and instead, kind of a mini-movie in sound – one that's almost as vivid as watching the film itself! Benedetto Ghiglia uses lots of different touches here – some of the expected guitar, but also swirling flute, moody trumpet, off-tune piano, and other unusual elements – all in this mix of songs that really shifts in style and mood, and which almost always comes across with a very fresh take on the spaghetti western genre! Ghigli's almost got that same sense of abstracting sound that we love in the Morricone music for films like this – and even the few appearances of I Cantori Moderni have a nicely offbeat vibe. As a bonus, the CD also includes selections from Un Dollaro Tra I Denti. CD

A fantastic combination of modern jazz talents – the groundbreaking Gary Burton Quartet, and the young avant ensemble of trombonist Mike Gibbs! The set begins with a fantastic performance by Burton's group – heard here in a lineup that has the guitar of Dave Pritchard sharing equal chromatic roles with Burton's beautiful vibes – alongside sublime bass from Steve Swallow, and drums from Bill Goodwin. Gary solos on a great version of "Chega De Saudade", and other tunes include "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan", "Arise Her Eyes", "And On The Third Day", "Ballet", and "Portsmith Configurations". CD 2 features a full set by Gibbs' group – in a rare recording before their debut album – with a lineup that includes Kenny Wheeler and Trevor Barber on trumpets, Alan Skidmore and Ray Warleigh on saxes, Chris Spedding on guitar, and Chris Pyne on trombone with Gibbs. Tracks are all long, and really beautiful – and include "Nowhere", "Walter L", "Tanglewood 63", and "Sojourn/June The 15th 1967". There's also vibes on these performances, but the notes are a bit unclear – so we're not sure if they're by Burton, or Frank Ricotti – who also worked with Gibbs. Burton's group returns on the funky track "Doin The Pig" – and then CD3 features a full second performance from earlier in 1969 – with a group that also includes John Surman on soprano, Mike Osborne on alto, Henry Lowther on trumpet, Jack Bruce on bass, and Ricotti on vibes. Titles on this set include "Feelings & Things/June The 15th 1967", "Sweet Rain", "Family Joy Oh Boy", and "Fly Time Fly Sigh". CD

Gilberto Gil live at Montreux – playing in this spare, stripped-down style that's quite a change from some of his more fully produced albums of the period – a mode that's very much like some of Gilberto's best albums from the start of the 70s! There's a lot of acoustic guitar in the instrumentation – as you'd guess from the cover – and backing is by a jazzy combo who can bring a slight touch of funk at times, but only in these gentle ways that still live Gil holding most of the energy of the performance with his charismatic presence. The tracks are all very long, with the kind of vocal and instrumental jamming that Gil brought to his best live performances – and the set's recorded in such a way that it really draws the audience into the picture. Titles include "Chororo", "Chuck Berry Fields Forever", "Atras Do Trio Electrico", "Tirole", and "Bat Macumba". CD

A haunting score from Jerry Goldsmith – filled with dark and turgid orchestrations, set as the rich backdrop for this 1969 film based on the Ray Bradbury story of the same name! The scoring is often atonal, with lots of off-kilter string passage that have an eerie sound that reminds us of Morricone's more avant-styled work. The CD features 17 tracks from the film, plus notes on the music, and some great images – with titles that include "The Rain", "The Sun Dance", "The House", "The Illustrations", and "Angry Child". An excellent twin-brass album in the frontline – one that pairs the talents of trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and trumpeter Terrell Stafford – both of whom really hit a great groove together! One of the most spiritual sessions we've ever heard from Noah Howard – a real gem from his 70s years on the European scene – and a record that takes all his previous avant explorations and gives them even more focus than before! The group's got a great way of building up a cosmic sense of energy before it takes off – real magic that comes from the Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano of Michael Smith, the bass of Bob Reid, and drums of Noel McGhee – the last of whom is a player who really drives the action along when needed – setting the spark that burns to a fire in Howard's bold alto solos. Noah also plays a bit of bells and tambourine – and Smith has a great way of resonating his acoustic keys in these wide waves of sound – very introspective, like some of Lonnie Liston Smith's early work with Pharoah Sanders. A really early piece of music from the great Karl Jenkins – the British instrumentalist that most folks know for his work in Soft Machine in the mid 70s – heard here a few years before, on a beautiful composition that mixes his jazz inclinations with some of his more serious ambitions! The album features one long work, divided up into movements – played by a lineup of some of the hippest British jazz players of the moment – including Ian Carr on flugelhorn, Ray Warleigh on alto, Alan Skidmore on tenor, Brian Smith on soprano, Chris Spedding on guitar, and Frank Ricotti on percussion! There's a solid, soaring vibe to "Penumbra II" – as the piece builds slowly, with some great piano from Jenkins himself – then really takes off, with added help from Dave MacRae on electric piano, Ray Babbington on bass, and John Marshall on drums – all at a level that mixes modal energy with some solos that step out nicely, but never too free or outside! An easygoing city pop classic from Momoko Kikuchi – catchy but laidback at the same time – and nicely produced, but with a different vibe than some of the clunkier American work of the time! The record's a great illustration of the way that a singer like Momoko could find just the right balance with the backings – working with a set of arrangements from Tetsuji Hayashi, who also wrote the songs – carrying forward some of the pop and soundtrack styles of the time, and wrapping things up in a well-crafted record for Kikuchi. One of our favorite-ever Lee Konitz albums – a really unique session with a wonderful kind of sound! The record is one that might not please all Konitz purists – as Lee plays a bit of Varitone sax and flute in addition to his usual acoustic alto. However, the set's got an amazing edge that you don't really hear in his other work – and was recorded in Italy in 1968 with a hip group that's working in a tight modal soul jazz mode. The other players include Italian luminaries Enrico Rava on trumpet, Franco D'Andrea on piano, and Giovanni Tomasso on bass – and the group grooves in a way that Konitz ensembles never do, pushing Lee to do these solos that actually open up a bit more than usual, almost even showing a bit of the spiritual jazz influences of the time. The album's Kris' second, and has maybe a more unified vibe than his debut – filled with original material that has that open, honest quality that Kristofferson brought to country music – and which also had a surprisingly strong impact on mainstream rock and singer/songwriter material too! There's both a frankness of feeling and sharpness of wit that make the whole thing wonderful – and the album's overflowing with original gems that include "Jody & The Kid", "Billy Dee", "Loving Her Was Easier", "The Taker", "When I Loved Her", "The Pilgrim Chapter 33" and "Epitaph" – plus a great reading of the Bobby Bare/Billy Joe Shaver tune "Good Christian Soldier". Border Lord is a wonderful album, and one that's full of lesser-known gems from Kris Kristofferson – from a time when he'd started sharing his songs with other singers first, and started to hold back all the good stuff for himself! The group here is quite unusual – as players include Enrico Rava on trumpet, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – one budding European improviser, and two key members of the Blue Notes – who'd left South Africa for the UK by the time of this release. The live performance features only two long tracks – "Forest" and "Zoo" – both played with a sense of freedom not heard before in Lacy's music, at a level that really points the way towards his explosive presence in the French and Italian scenes in years to come!
