Richard Pryor with Richard & WillieRichard Pryor Meets. . . Richard & Willie And. . . The SLA ... LP
Laff, 1976. Very Good ... $1.99
A very "current events" oriented set – one that sums up a variety of bigger news stories of the time, spinning them all out with a hip, underground take on the events. Richard and Willie (mostly Willie) dominate, but Richard Pryor gets in a bit too – and the language on the album is very very off-color. With "LA N!ggers", 'Sex Organs", "Getting Some", "Nixon","Douche Powder", "Toilet Tissue – Brand X-Brand B", "Line Up", "Black Preachers", "Ugly Suckers", "White Chicks", "Crap Game", "The Nut", "Passing Gas" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, splitting in the top seam, bumped corners, sticker spot, small marks in pen, some seam splitting, and light stains in back.)

✨✧ Richard PryorIs It Something I Said? ... LP
Warner, 1975. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pryor's really hit his stride here, and made the transition to the mainstream, though he's still a darn funny motherf*#ker. Skits include "Shortage Of White People", "New N*ggers", "Cocaine", "Mudbone", "When Your Woman Leaves You" and "Our Text For Today". Recorded live at the Latin Casino, NJ. LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label pressing. Vinyl has light sleeve marks. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ Richard EvansRichard's Almanac ... LP
Argo, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare early trio session from bassist Richard Evans – known much more famously for his late 60s soul and jazz arrangements at Chess! The set's not only unique for it's exposure of Evans as a jazz artist, but it also marks one of the first appearances of pianist Jack Wilson – still a part of the Chicago scene at the time of this album, but already playing with the fluid lyricism we love so much from his 60s LA recordings! Wilson's piano is a really key part of the record, and he works a groove that's simply sublime – filled with lots of flowing, gliding touches on the top of the keys, but also coming across with enough of a bottom to give the record plenty of soul! The drummer in the group is Robert Barry, another noteworthy south sider at the time – and titles include "Consu", "The Preacher", "Trees", "Vera", "Should I", and "Daybreak". Nice cover, too, with a young Evans sitting in front of a globe! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Richard Hell & The VoidoidsBlank Generation ... LP
Sire, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sublime sneering work from the great Richard Hell – a key album in the evolution of punk on the US scene! The record marks a huge shift after Hell left Television – harder, nastier sounds – almost on a par with the Dead Boys on Sire, but a bit more artistic too – especially given Hell's penchant for creative wordplay. The mighty Robert Quine is on guitar – and tracks include the seminal "Blank Generation" and "Love Comes In Spurts", plus "Liars Beware", "The Plan", Walking On The Water", and "Another World". Houseplant, 1970s/2024. New Copy 3LPs ... $82.99 99.99
Classic funk, rare soul, and contemporary goodies too – all served up in a beautiful package designed by the folks at Seth Rogan's Houseplant! As with the previous set, this one is divided into three modes – one record sativa, one indica, and the third a hybrid – capturing different moods with each record, but with an all-soul, rock-solid selection of tunes throughout! As with previous volumes, the classic and contemporary come into play in a really great way – and this volume also features some great international titles too – a set list that includes "Follow The Wind" by Coletta Woodson, "Cookin" by Tortilla Factory, "Bra" by Cymande, "High Beams" by Tkay Maidza, "Lupita" by Nico Gomez, "Pretty Woman Pass On By" by Richard Marks, "Norma Jean" by Napoleon Demps, "Bizness" by Tune Yards, "Right On" by Carleen & The Groovers, "The Love You Left Behind" by Syl Johnson, "Groovy Babe" by Durand Jones & The Indications, "Kill Dem" by Jamie XX, "Aminata Du The" by Amadou Balake, "Help Me To Understand" by Harlem Gospel Travelers, "Will I See You Again" by Thee Sacred Souls, "Grow Forever" by Lizette & Quevin, "Tearz" by El Michels Affair & Lee Fields, "Everything That Looks Good" by Charles Suggs, "Raggio Verde" by Il Quadro Di Troisi, "Let's Do It Today" by The US, and "When We Would Ride" by Kendra Morris & Eraserhood Sound. ✨✧ Oliver NelsonMore Blues & The Abstract Truth ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Oliver Nelson's follow-up to his classic Blues & The Abstract Truth session for Impulse – and like that one, a tremendous little album – filled with deep tones and wonderful colors in sound! The group here's a bit larger than before – an ensemble that includes Phil Woods on alto, Ben Webster on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Roger Kellaway on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. The album includes some superb original compositions by Nelson – just the kind of overlooked jazz numbers that make the set great – and as with most of his arrangements from the time, there's a perfect balance between group force and intimate solo space! Titles include "The Critic's Choice", "Blues & The Abstract Truth", "One For Bob", and 2 versions of Dave Brubeck's "Theme From Mr. Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono orange and black label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Vinyl has light sleeve marks. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Frank D'RoneBrand New Morning ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A very unusual album from this vocalist – proof that Frank D'Rone was always more interesting than most of his contemporaries! The set features soulful backings from Richard Evans, arranged by Johnny Pate – who really gives things more of a groove than usual – on titles that include "Bluesette", "It's A Beautiful Evening", "Little People", "Think I Will", "Make Me Rainbows", and "Mandy Is Two". ✨✧ Joe LaBarberaWorld Travelers (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sam First, 2024. New Copy ... $27.99 34.99
Drummer Joe LaBarbera always seems to know how to get the most out of a group – and that's definitely the case here, on a record that bristles with bold energy that hearkens back to the best years of hardbop – while also letting some of the individual players deliver some decidedly modern tones! The group features excellent work from Clay Jenkins on trumpet – a player whose phrasing really grabs us – next to tenor from Bob Sheppard, a player with this raspy edge that really adds a lot to the session! Bill Cunliffe plays piano, and brings a broad sense of tone to the record that seems to wrap everything up and unify the sound – and the group's completed by Jonathan Richards on bass. Titles include "Blue Notes", "Lake Erie", "Landmarks Along The Way", "You Know I Care", and "Grand Central". LP, Vinyl record album

Hermeto PascoalHermeto ... LP
Cobblestone/Far Out (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
The amazing first album from Brazilian modern musical genius Hermeto Pascoal – a set that would change the world of jazz and Brazilian music for years to come! By the time of the set, Hermeto was no stranger to the scene – he'd recorded famously in Quarteto Novo with Airto, and in some other key groups – yet this set also marks a real transformation, the rise of Pascoal as a new visionary, with endless fresh ideas for sounds, rhythms, and instrumental possibilities! And yet, the album's still very groovy – it follows nicely off the spirit of Quarteto Novo, and mixes tight rhythmic changes with all sorts of incredible instrumental inflections – work by Pascoal on keyboards and flute – augmented with drums and percussion from Airto, and a range of reeds from American jazz musicians Jerome Richardson, Maurico Smith, Joe Farrell, Jerry Dodgion, and Hubert Laws – as well as trombone from the great Garnett Brown, and trumpets from Thad Jones and Joe Newman. The mix of American players and Brazilian inspiration is wonderful – and Airto and Flora Purim produced the set – and the latter sings a bit on the record. Titles include "As Marianas", "Alicate", "Hermeto", "Coalhada", "Fabiola", "Guizos", and "Flor Do Amor". LP, Vinyl record album
Also available Hermeto ... CD 13.99

✨✧ George DukeLiberated Fantasies ... LP
MPS, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Solid soul from the amazing George Duke – a record with a fair bit more focus than some of his previous efforts for MPS, but still done with a free and righteous vibe overall! The album's one of the last before Duke moved into smoother soul territory for his US albums of the late 70s – and it's still got plenty of the best hallmarks of the MPS years – especially on the keyboards, which are always warm and mellow, used with a great sense of space and inherent rhythm. There's a bit more vocals than before, but they're fused in nicely with the instrumentation – and players in Duke's group include Airto on percussion, Emil Richards on marimba, and Ndugu Chancler on some very heavy drums! Vocals are by Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, and Bonnie Bowdon Amaro – and titles include "Back To Where We Never Left", "I C'n Hear That", and "Liberated Fantasies", all of which are nice jazz funk numbers – plus "Don't Be Shy", "Seeing You", "Tzina", and "After The Love".
