A wonderful record that's every bit as great as you might expect from the title – a baroque take on the music of Burt Bacharach, and one that's served up with some groovy scatting vocals too! The approach is a bit like that of the Swingle Singers, but a bit more American too – mixed male and female vocals scatting wordlessly to some of Burt Bacharach's greatest tunes – always with a jazzy feel, and usually backed with some cool electric harpsichord, which totally sounds great! The mighty Al Capps handled arrangements – and it's clearly his genius that got this whole thing sounding so wonderful – but the mighty Snuff Garrett produced, and deserves a tip of the hat too. Titles include "The Look Of Love", "What The World Needs Now", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", and "Close To You". LP, Vinyl record album
A previously unreleased live date from late in the career of Ben Webster – recorded at The Renaissance in Hollywood in 1960, but unissued until nearly 25 years later! The group features Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Butler on drums – and tracks are all longish, and live-feeling – with that sense of fragility that marked some of Webster's later recordings in this mode, and even further deepened the humanity in his tone. And while the recording quality is definitely "live" at times, Ben's tone comes through loud and clear – different than on some of the tighter Verve recordings of a few years before, but in a way that's really great. Titles include "Georgia On My Mind, "Caravan", "Stardust", and "Ole Miss Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
Association —
Renaissance ... LP Valiant, 1966. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
An aptly-titled album, as it sprung the genius of The Association fully onto the world – and forever changed the rules for dreamy vocal pop music! The album's a wonderful blend of sweet harmonies, LA production, and the kind of slightly-trippy song stylings you already know from The Association's biggest hits. However, the album's also filled with great little songs that you probably haven't heard before – which makes it an even bigger treat, kind of like stumbling upon a treasure box of unheard musical gems that you've been looking for your entire life! Titles include "Songs In The Wind", "Memories Of You", "No Fair At All", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", and "Another Time Another Place". LP, Vinyl record album

Sam & Dave —
Back At Cha ... LP United Artists, 1975. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
A rare late LP Sam & Dave cut for United Artists in the mid 70s – with raw & gritty soul vocals and rough hewn, yet soulfully resonant production by Steve Cropper, and backing by a slew of Memphis sessions specialists! Back At Cha is a coulda-shoulda-woulda been great comeback effort, and if failed to chart them for renaissance revival, it sounds pretty sharp all these years later. Sam & Dave's vocals go more for raw emotional grittiness, well matched by heavier Memphis soul backdrops for the most parts, and a touch of string accented sweetness in a spot or two. Titles include "When My Love Comes Down", "There's A Party In My Heart", "Blinded By Love", "Under The Boardwalk", "Come Into My Life", "Queen Of The Ghetto", "Give It What You Can" and more. Second Nature is jammed packed, and features the cream of the Chicago underground and other guests including JUICE, Slug, Lone Catalysts, Mr. Greenweedz and others. Tracks include "The Stick Up", "Think Again", "Chatam", "Vegetarian", "Ill Advisory", "Stellar", "Queens Get The Money", "Mr. Sexy", "Renaissance", "Godspeed", and "Future Is Now". Forget the Shakespearean reference in the title – which might make you think the whole album's got a Renaissance bent – because the album's a nice bit of funky flute jazz from Hubert Laws, done with the same groovy vibe as some of his earlier albums for the CTI label! The set was produced by Bob James, and has lots of strong James touches – from the sweet work on Fender Rhodes and clavinet that works nicely with the flute on most tracks, to the full group rhythms that make the best tracks into nice smooth groovers! A few tunes get more introspective, in Hubert's Afro-Classic mode – and titles include "Guatemala Connection", "What Are We Gonna Do", "Undecided", "Forlane", and "Tryin To Get The Feelin Again". LP, Vinyl record album
The Marquis De Sade never sounded so sweet! For some strange reason, Schifrin decided to pay a musical hommage to De Sade with this one – but fortunately, he's not punishing himself with the subject matter at all, and is sticking to his jazzy bossa guns. The arrangements have a tight Verve mid 60s groove to them – with breakout solos on piano and flute, slightly baroque scoring that mixes strings, harpsichord, and some straighter jazz playing, and a good focus on strong rhythm playing throught. A breezy treat that would make any of us drop a paddle and kick back for a cocktail – if we had the chance! Titles include "Bossa Antique", "The Wig", "Old Laces", "Beneath A Weeping Willow Shade", "Renaissance", and "Troubadour". LP, Vinyl record album
