Prestige, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
2 classic Miles/Coltrane albums are compiled here on a nice double LP set with good extra notes on the sessions. Miles and Trane are backed by the classic Red Garland/Paul Chambers/Philly Joe Jones rhythm section, and the set appears to include a few more tracks than the original LPs (although we're not sure). Titles include "Diane", "The Theme", "Ahmad's Blues", "Four", and "Half Nelson". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles DavisWorkin' With The Miles Davis Quintet ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that hardly seems like workin at all, given the ease with which the group lays down the music – especially trumpeter Miles Davis, whose work here is like magic – and tenorist John Coltrane, who was really coming into his own with this recording! The set's one of a handful from this famous pair, and features superb rhythm accompaniment from Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a standard-setting group who know how to come in when needed, then lay back and let Miles and Trane run in their own directions The album's got well-deserved classic status in modern jazz – and titles include two takes on the group's famous "The Theme", plus "It Never Entered My Mind", "Four", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Trane's Blues", "Ahmad's Blues", and "Half Nelson". TDK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great forces from the postwar world of jazz, coming together here in a rare set that was originally only issued in Japan! The alto of Lou Donaldson had cut plenty of funky, soulful records in the 70s – but here, he's returned to the charms of his earliest work on Blue Note – and spins out these stunning long solos alongside the piano of Red Garland – who's equally great, and supports Donaldson with the soulful style of his best work alongside Coltrane on late 50s sessions for Prestige! The rest of the group features the great Jamil Nasser on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – players who really help make this session a cut above anything you might expect – and titles include "Stella By Starlight", "Blues", "Misty", "Fine & Dandy", and "The Best Things In Life Are Free". CD features the bonus track "I Got It Bad". CD

Hachidai NakamuraMemories Of Lyllyan ... LP
Toshiba/Universal (Japan), 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 49.99
A great piano trio set from the start of the 60s – performed by a Japanese player we know little about! Hachidai Nakamura isn't a name that we remember from many other records, but on this beautifully-titled record he steps forth with a command of the keys that's really wonderful – a sound that's got a mix of soulfulness and sensitivity that reminds us a fair bit of Red Garland on Prestige, but which also seems to get a bit more kick here from the bolder lines of Hachiro Kurita on bass and Jimmy Takeuchi on drums. Titles are all in Japanese, but most seem to be originals – and Hachidai's got a sharp-edged way of stating his intentions on the tunes, then leaping into the groove with a freer sort of solo. CD presents the original album, beautifully remastered – with stereo and mono takes of all titles! LP, Vinyl record album

A legendary album from alto genius Art Pepper – a set in which he meets up with the famous Miles Davis rhythm section of the time – Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a trio of players who really help send the album over the top! There's maybe a bit more of a crackle in the rhythms here than on some of Art's other 50s records – which makes for a classic meeting of east and west coast scenes, and some especially nice raspy lines from Pepper – delivered at that level that always made his music of this period so nicely complex – outwardly cool, but with some seething energy at the core. Titles include a definitive take on Art's classic "Straight Life" – plus "Waltz Me Blues", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and "Star Eyes". CD

✨✧ Arthur TaylorTaylor's Wailers ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A well-titled set from drummer Art Taylor – given that he's got some very heavy-duty horn power on the session, all of whom are heavy-duty wailers! Most of the record features a lineup with Charlie Rouse on tenor, Jackie McLean on alto, and Donald Byrd on trumpet – all taking off beautifully from some simple, rhythmic modes laid down by Taylor on drums, Ray Bryant on piano, and Wendell Marshall on bass. Most tracks are quite long – and include "Batland", "Cubano Chant", "Off Minor", "Well You Needn't", and "Exhibit A". One more track changes things slightly – and goes for a group that features John Coltrane on tenor, with Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass – a version of "CTA" that cooks every bit as nicely as other work on the set, although with less horns! ✨✧ Phil WoodsSugan ... LP
Status, 1957. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The genius of Phil Woods emerges fully on this rare album from 1957 – an unusually-titled session, and one of the few to really set Phil up in a looser, more intimate setting! The approach is a bit like Woods sublime work for Epic Records, but more soulful too – and very different than some of his chamber jazz work on RCA, or the more blowing-session styled records on Prestige. Here, everything falls into place beautifully – as Phil's razor-sharp tones sparkle strongly on some well-conceived tracks that also feature trumpet work by Ray Copeland – and rhythm from the trio of Red Garland on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums. The tunes are bop-oriented, but Woods already stretches out way past any cliches – really finding his voice and showing a tremendous amount of growth in just a few years. Titles include "Steeplechase", "Au Prive", "Last Fling", "Sugan", and "Green Pines". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousReturn Of Jazz Club – Dancefloor Classics From The Original Jazz Dance DJ ... CD
Prestige/BGP (UK), Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Really classic jazz grooves from the vaults of Prestige Records – the kind of cuts that first broke big on the London scene of the 80s, at a time when diggers were setting fire to the rare groove scene too! The cuts here are proof that some of the best work doesn't need to come from completely obscure groups or super-tiny labels – as the music here is exactly the kind of work that made huge waves in the US jazz scene when first released, then went underground for many years – until later collectors and diggers brought it back to the limelight! The great thing is how many of these cuts are all acoustic – no need for electricity to make things funky – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Hiyo Silver" by Bennie Green, "Grease Monkey" by Kenny Burrell with Jack McDuff, "Mau Mau" by Art Farmer, "Mambo Inn" by Billy Taylor with Candido, "Manteca" by Red Garland, "Blue Stompin" by Hal Singer, "Spider Man" by Freddie McCoy, "Filthy McNasty" by Eddie Jefferson, "Flatjacks" by Willie Rodriguez, "Blue Gator" by Willis Jackson, and "Pedro Stroller" by Johnny Lytle. Fantastic! This is the kind of soul that we still collect vinyl for! Freddie Hughes is one of the great lost voices of the 60s, and this sparkling album of soulful tunes is a real gem! He's not the same singer as the Freddie Hughes from Chicago – and he hailed from San Francisco, a very unlikely source for such great soul music. The session was recorded with Lonnie Hewitt (Cal Tjader's funky piano player) in SF – but it's got that perfect New York Wand/Scepter "deep soul meets uptown" sound. The tracks are mostly written by Hughes or Hewitt – and they are all pretty amazing, filled with hooks that just don't quit, and some heartbreaking verses that match the work of writers like Curtis Mayfield or Garland Green. An incredible record – and the reason to buy rare soul vinyl! This is the kind of balls-out, once-in-a-thousand soul album that you'll dig through racks for years to find – totally solid, no filler, all top-shelf material sung by an amazing under-acknowledged artist with an incredible voice! Jesse hails from the Bay Area, and he's got a style that's unlike anyone else we can think of – partly southern party (ala The Tams), partly Chicago male (ala Garland Green or Gene Chandler), and partly New York uptown (ala Chuck Jackson or Tommy Hunt). But that mix doesn't even begin to describe Jesse's talents – as the record is a killer batch of original tunes, all linked together with some "live" audience noise, with vocals by Jesse that will have you coming back again and again to the record. Truly one of the real gems in our soul collection – a record that we own not just for one track, but for the amazing standout performance that sets it apart from a thousand other albums! Titles include "Green Power", "Thank You Darlin", "Facts Of Life 68", "Believe In Me Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring My Baby Back", and "I'll Always Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

Lou JohnsonIncomparable Soul Vocalist – The Big Top Recordings ... CD
Big Top/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
An incomparable soul vocalist finally gets his due – in a beautiful collection of work by the overlooked Lou Johnson! Johnson recorded in the same New York scene as Chuck Jackson and other smooth make singers in the mid 60s – but working on the relatively small Big Top label, his contributions to music haven't gotten nearly the exposure of others over the years – which is a damn shame, because Lou's got one hell of a fantastic vocal approach! His style's definitely a bit like that of Jackson – and not too far from Jerry Butler, Walter Jackson, Garland Green, and a few other sophisticated male singers of the 60s we can think of – soul music that's definitely a cut above, sung with careful class that you'd be hard-pressed to find in many other vocalists of the period. Lou's still got a nice sort of bite in his approach – which means that he's never too smooth, and certainly never poppy – and this full-length collection is really the first time that his incredible singles have ever been collected together in one place. Titles include "This Night", "Just Be A Woman", "Park Avenue", "Magic Potion", "The Panic Is On", "Reach Out For Me", "Time To Love A Time To Cry", "If I Never Get To Love You", "Unsatisfied", "No Other Guy", "Love Build A Fence", and "Little Girl". ✨✧ VariousMasterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 2 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title totally gets it right – because these are some wonderfully put-together soul tunes – mini-masterpieces of the modern variety, and the kind of cuts that are ripe for rediscovery today! Hardly any of these cuts got their due back in the 70s, but they've all got a completely sublime sound – that groove that first started as Northern Soul turned into modern – when the rhythms laid back a bit more and the lyrics hipped up a bit – moving past simple soul themes into even deeper, more mature modes. Production is great, but never commercial at all – and most of the singers still have a really great edge – raspy enough to really bring enough feeling to the tunes, but poised with the right maturity to fit the music. Completely wonderful throughout, and even better than the first volume – with 24 tracks that include some great harmonies on many numbers. Titles include "Double Love" by The California Playboys, "A Broken Heart Cries" by The Pretenders, "It's Better To Cry" by Johnny Watson, "What Hurts" by Grover Mitchell, "Still A Part Of Me" by The Minits, "Lovin" by The Pacesetters, "Always" by Garland Green, "You Gotta Be A Lady" by The Chargers, "That's The Way Our Love Is" by The Radiations, "You're Gonna Lose Me" by Freddie Hubbard & Jeanie Tracy, "Hope For Love" by Darrow Fletcher", "I Can See Him Loving You" by The Mayberry Movement, "More Than Just Somebody I Know" by Brenda Wayne, "The Fool Who Used To Live Here" by Betty Fikes, "I'm A Dreamer" by Bobby Burn, and "Wear Your Natural Baby" by Towana & The Total Destruction. ✨✧ VariousSoul Of Spring ... CD
Spring/Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous collection of 70s soul – one of our favorite-ever compilations from the UK Kent label! The set focuses on the lesser-known gems of the Spring and Event labels – companies who were well-known for bigger hits by Joe Simon, Millie Jackson, and others – but who also cut some sublime singles in a modern soul mode, many of which were new discoveries to our ears before this CD! The package is really incredible – filled with 23 cuts that really opened our ears to the labels, and which do a fantastic job of blending mellow, sophisticated, and bits of southern soul in the 70s! Titles include "What Did I Do Wrong" by The Mayberry Movement, "You Didn't Love Me Anyhow" by Act One, "I Can't Believe You Love Me" by Lou Jackson, "House For Sale" by Millie Jackson, "Alakazam" by Sonny Ross, Time" by Don Williams & The Exchange, "There's Another In My Life" by Phillip Mitchell, "Can I Get A Witness" by Jackie Verdell, "C'Mon & Give It Up" by Clare Bathe, "Please Come Home" by Garland Green, "I'm The Other Half Of You" by Ray Godfrey, and "Lead Me On" by The Internationals. ✨✧ VariousSoul Of Spring Vol 2 ... CD
Spring/Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little follow-up to one of our favorite compilations ever from Kent Records – a motherlode of under-discovered soul from 70s powerhouse Spring Records! Spring is best known for its big hits with Joe Simon during the decade – but at the same time, the label also issued countless great singles by lesser-known artists – great little gems that run the gamut from southern soul to heavy funk, harmony soul, and disco – all with a quality level that matches or beats most of the other indies of the time! This wonderful set brings together some of the best from those years – and includes work issued not only on Spring, but also on the related Event and Posse labels – served up here as a whopping 24-track package that's supported by great notes on all the music. Titles include "It's So Good To Know" by Mayberry Movement, "I'm A Lover" by Vernon Brown, "You & I Go Good Together" by Garland Green, "Turn Yourself Around" by Clare Bathe, "Walk All Over God's Heaven" by Jackie Verdell, "Baby There's Nothing You Can Do" by The Joneses, "I'm On My Way" by Winfield Parker, "Ain't It Amazing" by Prince Harold, "Dry Bones In The Valley" by The Internationals, "Mr Everything" by Little Eva Harris, "It Takes Both Of Us" by Act One, "I'll See You In Hell First" by Phillip Mitchell, "Sherry Washington" by Ray Godfrey, and "Just Can't Say Hello" by Ronnie Walker.
