✨✧ Lee Fields & The ExpressionsIt Rains Love ... LP
Big Crown, 2019. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Fields has a fantastic raspy vocal style, but he never just lets that stand as his calling card – because he's really bringing new inflections, new inspirations to the music – all while working with superb backing from Leon Michels and The Expressions. If you can imagine Hi Records mixed with James Brown mixed with New Jersey soul mixed with Daptone mixed with The Impressions – then you've only got part of the multi-faceted genius of this set. Titles include "Two Faces", "You're What's Needed In My Life", "Love Prisoner", "Will I Get Off Easy", "It Rains Love", "Love Is The Answer", "A Promise Is A Promise", and "Blessed With The Best". ✨✧ Cedar WaltonEastern Rebellion (Muse) ... LP
Timeless/Muse, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A seminal work in the development of the career of Cedar Walton – the formation of his excellent Eastern Rebellion ensemble, a group that became a platform for soul jazz expression for the next two decades! The group on this set features George Coleman on tenor, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all working in territory that Walton and Clifford Jordan were exploring heavily at the time – long, drawn-out soul jazz tunes – frequently built upon modal rhythms, and touched with traces of post-Coltrane blowing. The key factor, though, is that the work's never too outside, never too overindulgent – just hard-swinging soul jazz, in a 70s expression of the older Blue Note ideal! Titles include "Bolivia", "5/4 Thing", "Mode For Joe", and "Naima". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles MosleyUprising ... LP
Verve, 2017. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Blue-eyed funky soul from Miles Mosley – an artist who's working here with the West Coast Get Down group that features Cameron Graves on piano and Kamasai Washington on tenor sax! The vocals are definitely in the lead, though – as Miles draws on classic soul and jazz that really push his vocal range – on material that's nicely open and expressive, maybe more so than other singers of this nature. There's some larger arrangements at times – but most of the energy seems to come from the core combo, of which Miles is definitely in the lead – on tracks that include "LA Won't Bring You Down", "Heartbreaking Efforts Of Others", "Your Only Cover", "More Than This", "Reap A Soul", and "Young Lion". ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire ... LP
Warner, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Earth, Wind & Fire's first album – recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Burbank label pressing – a nice copy! Cover has a small cutout mark.)

✨✧ Al WilsonShow & Tell ... LP
Rocky Road, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A crowning moment of genius from Al Wilson – a Cali soul singer who'd already gotten a nice start in the 60s, but who really found his fame with the title track on this 70s gem! Wilson's got a style that's nicely expressive – never too overly dramatic, yet filled with charm – a quality that's really augmented by the arrangements on the record from HB Barnum – who does as great a job here with Al as he did with Lou Rawls in the 60s! The title cut "Show & Tell" is one of those numbers you'll recognize in the second – and the rest of the album's full of great material too – cuts that include "Queen Of The Ghetto", "What You See", "Moonlightin", and "For Cryin' Out Loud". LP, Vinyl record album
