Ravi ColtraneMad 6 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Eighty Eights (Japan), 2002. Used ... $19.99
Straight, clear, and soulful work from Ravi Coltrane – one of the best albums of his we've ever heard, recorded with an uncluttered brilliance that shows how much he's grown as a player! The format's similar to some of the classic 60s Wayne Shorter albums on Blue Note – tenor, piano, bass, and drums – arcing in modal, searching statements, couched in a rich tradition of soulful blowing. Titles include "The Mad 6", "Return Of Olymbus", "Ask Me Now", "Fifth House", and "Self Portrait In 3 Colors". CD

✨✧ Ravi ColtraneSpirit Fiction ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ravi Coltrane's first album for Blue Note – put together here with production help from Joe Lovano, who also plays a bit of guest tenor too! The album's got a really dark edge – and really works strongly in those edgier sides of the spectrum – those modes that Coltrane's developed best in the past decade or so – which are almost more saxophonic elements of a maturing Wayne Shorter than they are those of his famous father! Ravi's got a good sense of space between his notes – never bridging the gaps with flurries of sound, and instead making these bold statements that swing together nicely, with help from a lineup that includes Geri Allen and Luis Pedromo on piano, James Genus and Drew Gress on bass, and EJ Strickland and Eric Harland on drums. In addition to tenor from Lovano on two tracks, the set also features some guest trumpet from Ralph Alessi – on titles that include "The Change My Girl", "Spirit Fiction", "Klepto", "Roads Cross", "Cross Roads", "Yellow Cat", and "Check Out Time". ✨✧ Jack DeJohnette/Ravi Coltrane/Matt GarrisonIn Movement ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record of darkly brooding sounds from drummer Jack DeJohnette – a trio date, but one that's way more than any trio session you might expect – and definitely part of the great legacy of creative sounds that Jack has given us over the years! The lineup features Matthew Garrison on bass and electronics, and Ravi Coltrane on tenor, soprano, and sopranino sax – working together in textures of sounds that really benefit from DeJohnette's open conception of rhythm, as the group creates lots of textures and tones. Coltrane's sound grounds the whole thing with some soulful currents – and titles include a take on John Coltrane's "Alabama", which nicely sets up the excellent originals "In Movement" and "Two Jimmys" – the former a great showcase for Ravi's solos and the latter doing the same trick for Garrison's sly, almost sinister bass groove. Other titles include a shadowy take on Earth Wind & Fire's "Serpentine Fire", plus "Blue In Green", "Lydia", "Rashied", and "Soulful Ballad". CD

Alice ColtraneTranslinear Light ... CD
Impulse, 2004. Used ... $11.99
Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving styles of classics albums like Ptah The El Daoud and Huntington Ashram Monastery. Most tracks feature a trio or quartet – with players that include Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass. Alice plays some great Wurlitzer organ on a few cuts – getting this really wonderful "flat" tone to the instrument, one that almost has the same spiritual undertones as a harmonium. The whole thing's great – far better than we could have expected – and titles include "Sita Ram", "Translinear Light", "This Train", "Blue Nile", "Triloka", and "Crescent". CD

✨✧ Blue Note 7Mosaic – A Celebration Of Blue Note Records (Japanese pressing – with bonus CD) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 2008. Used 2 CDs ... $24.99
A brilliant celebration of Blue Note Records – one that features some key songs from the label's classic years, interpreted by a sharp-edged group of younger players! The lineup here is wonderful – Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Steve Wilson on alto and flute, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and rhythm from Bill Charlap on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – all players who are great in their own right, but who really come together with a classic sort of sound here – a vibe that really respects the Blue Note leaders of years past, and which really gets their energy right! The rhythms are tremendous – no surprise, given how great Nash and Washington can be – and the tunes have a soulful, soaring quality that draws on all the joy Blue Note's given the world over the years – proclaimed boldly by the horn solos in the set. Titles include "Little B's Poem", "Inner Urge", "Mosaic", "Dolphin Dance", "Criss Cross", "Search For Peace", "The Outlaw", and "Idle Moments". Limited Japanese pressing contains a bonus CD – featuring the 8 original versions of the tunes by Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Grant Green, Horace Silver, and others! CD

Savoy/32 Jazz, Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent overview of the early Wallace Roney work for Muse Records – brilliant sessions that helped Roney redefine the sound of the trumpet for a whole new generation! Roney's sound was one of the boldest, brightest on the label – and on records like this he really shines – working with an array of like-minded young lions who include Ravi Coltrane, Donald Brown, Antoine Roney, Christian McBride, and Cindy Blackman – on titles that include "Blue In Green", "Obsession", "Daahoud", "Lost", "For Duke", "Donna Lee", and "Love For Sale". ✨✧ Steve Coleman & Five ElementsDef Trance Beat – Modalities Of Rhythm ... CD
BMG, 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Creative sounds from alto saxophonist Steve Coleman – working here with his Five Elements group, at a time that was one of his most productive! The group have an angular sort of swing – a style that certainly grows out of some more exploratory moments in 80s mainstream jazz, yet which here comes across with a warmer, more acoustic feel overall – never nearly as bogged down by some of the too academic moments that could hold back some of their contemporaries, or even Coleman at some earlier moments. Rhythms are stiff, but still nice and warm – thanks to drums from Gene Lake – and in addition to Steve's alto, the group also features piano from Andy Milne, bass from Reggie Washington, and a bit of tenor from Ravi Coltrane. Titles include "Dogon", "Flint", "Veritable Pedagogy", "The Khu", "Pad That", and "Multiplicity Of Approaches". CD

✨✧ David Murray OctetOctet Plays Trane ... CD
Justin Time (Canada), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sublime take on the music of John Coltrane – one that would be great enough if it just featured the tenor of David Murray – but which also expands the presentation in a larger group that really brings a lot to the music! There's a soaring sort of spirit here that's beautiful – interplay between the solos and the charts that's a bit in Africa/Brass territory, but much more lean overall – and more skewed towards some of the best experiments of this nature that Murray was creating as a leader back in the 80s. The octet is filled with great players – including James Spaulding on alto and flute, Craig Harris on trombone, and Ravi Best on trumpet – and titles include "Naima", "The Crossing", "India", and "A Love Supreme: Part I - Acknowledgement". ✨✧ Wallace RoneyMunchin' ... CD
Muse, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
Underground grooving from trumpeter Wallace Roney – one of the excellent albums he recorded for the Muse label in the 90s – a wonderfully well-rounded set that's a tremendous tribute to his tone! The group here is every bit as great as Wallace's work in the frontline – Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Geri Allen on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums – an especially sympathetic rhythm section who bring out some nice warmer touches to offset Roney's occasionally bold tones on trumpet. Tracks are strongly in a traditional soulbop mode – and titles include "Smooch", "Whims Of Chambers", "Lost", "Bemsha Swing", and "Solar". CD

✨✧ VariousRevolution In Sound – Pop Culture & The Avant Garde (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. There's a wealth of musical discoveries throughout – and the 4CD set is overflowing with key cuts from Ornette Coleman, Bela Bartok, Edgard Varese, Daphne Oram, Jean Sibelius, Eric Dolphy, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Henry, John Cate, John Coltrane, Humphrey Searle, Arnold Schoenberg, Bill Evans, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Julian Bream, and many others. Chivo BorraroBlues Para Un Cosmonauta (aka Buenos Aires Blues) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RGS (Argentina), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A sweet set of 70s spiritual jazz from Argentine tenor player Chivo Borraro – one of his best albums of the time, and a really wonderful session with lots of nice touches! The record features Borraro playing keyboard effects, in addition to his usual tenor – and it also features some additional keyboards by Fernando Gelbard, who plays both Fender Rhodes and ring modulator on the album, working things wonderfully as he did on his own albums of the time. This wealth of keyboards gives the album a spacious feel – keys soaring out into space, creating platforms for solo work on sax, and a space to showcase the talents of Stenio Mendes, who plays the 12-stringed craviola on the album. There's lots of post-Coltrane exploration to the record – and titles include "Mi Amgio Tarzan", "Cancion De Cuna Para Un Bebe Del Ano 2000", "Lineas Torcidas", and "La Invasion De Los Monjes". CD also features two bonus tracks – "Intro/Mi Amigo Tarzan" and "Mi Amigo Tarzan (alt take)". CD

✨✧ VariousCelestial Blues – Cosmic, Political, & Spiritual Jazz 1970 to 1974 ... CD
Prestige/BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spiritual sounds from the source – a host of incredible tracks from a time when jazz was really opening up into new dimensions – as players stepped forward in a wave of strong post-Coltrane energy to really push the music into the skies! The music here can be seen as a blueprint for generations to come – styles that are now getting new fame in the hands of Kamasi Washington and some of his contemporaries, but which flowered first in recordings like these – pulled from the early 70s vaults of Prestige, Milestone, and Muse Records – and brought together here in a really wonderful collection! Tracks are all nice and long, and the set showcases an older generation of jazz musicians really flowering at the time – balanced perfectly between a sense of freedom and a spiritual soul – on titles that include "Celestial Blues" by Gary Bartz NTU Troop, "Let Us Go To Higher Heights" by Carlos Garnett, "The Almoravid" by Joe Chambers, "Brown Eyes" by Charles Earland, "Warriors Of Peace" by Azar Lawrence, "Aftermath" by Oliver Nelson, "Josie Black" by Hampton Hawes, "Let It Take Your Mind" by Bayete Umbra Zindiko, "Fire" by Joe Henderson and Alice Coltrane, and "The Free Slave" by Roy Brooks. CD
