A really cool collaboration between tenor legend Archie Shepp and keyboardist Jasper Van't Hof – two players who worked together before this album, and come back nicely with a really inventive sort of sound! You may know Jasper from his wilder, wiggier electronic work of the 70s – and here, he uses some of those elements in the music, mixed with acoustic piano – but often at a level that seems really well-tuned to Archie's spirit, which wouldn't have been the case with his work of the past. There's a really great sense of variety going on here – from the electronic theme "The Hunter", to a sublime mellow acoustic take on "Naima", to a strange Shepp vocal performance on "Down Home In New York" – next to other cuts that include "Pulse Of The Roots", "In A Decent Way", and "5th Of May". Very nice set of Mingus' legendary Candid recordings – produced in 1960, after Mingus angrily departed Columbia records, and was finally given the freedom to work in the way that he wanted. The recordings are some of Mingus best – and they feature a righteous anger and sheer jazz power that's unmatched by few other recordings. Tracks include "Mysterious Blues", "Reincarnation of A Lovebird", "Bugs", "R&R", "Vassarlean", and more! CD

A great counterpart to the two famous Charles Mingus albums for the Candid label – really a third "lost" Candid album, recorded at the time of those sets, but never issued until many years later! As with those great dates, the work here is filled with righteous anger, unbridled emotion, and some of the most passionate jazz work of the 20th Century – directed by Mingus with unfailing energy on the bass, and featuring solo work from players who include Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet, Booker Ervin on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, Ted Curson and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpets, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Paul Bley on piano – all giants in their own right, most of whom gave the world some fantastic records under their own leadership too! Tracks are all nice and long, mostly from the November 11, 1960 date that featured two different groups – titles that include "Bugs", "R&R", "Reincarnation Of A Lovebird (2nd version)", "Body & Soul", and "All The Things You Are (all)". A tasty batch of piano jazz from the left bank scene of the 50s – featuring the reissue of 2 albums cut by Americans in Paris! The first 7 tracks feature Art Simmons on the keys – working in a quartet with Terry Donoghue on guitar, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums, on tracks that include "Art's Blues", "The Lady Is a Tramp", "My Funny Valentine", and "Hommage To Neal Hefti". The last 8 tracks feature Ronnel Bright working with Richard Davis and Art Morgan – originally issued as a rare Polygram LP, with tracks that include "Johnnie Pate's Blues", "Sail Em", "Doxology", "Chasing Sarah", and "R&R Groove". Numero Group does it again – and manages to pull together all the best bits from the crucially overlooked powerpop scene in the Land Of Lincoln – a wealth of wonderful groups from the 70s and 80s, all of whom recorded great indie sounds in Illinois! Sure, you've heard of Cheap Trick, and maybe The Kind – but Illinois was also home to handfuls of other great groups – many of whom never found national fame, due to lack of access to the kind of A&R that groups on the coast were getting. The sound here is wonderful – razor sharp guitars, super-tight drums, and tuneful lyrics that still burst forth with plenty of power – a great reminder that not all the hot energy of the late 70s was going into punk rock. As usual, Numero's overdone themselves with the package – lots of info on the groups, and the kind of stylish package that even goes way beyond most of the original records too. One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by pianist Ronnell Bright – a player best known for his accompaniment behind famous vocalists, like Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson – but who's also a jell of a jazz musician when he gets to shine on his own! This rare date was cut in Paris – at a time when Bright was visiting the city with Vaughan – and it's a stripped-down trio date with a nicely relaxed feel – one that has Bright really opening up on the keys, in ways you don't always hear on his material with singers.
