J MastersAll Star Jam Session – The J Masters Live At Pit Inn ... CD
Pit Inn (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 28.99
The J Masters are Japanese Jazz Masters – a really great sextet with key members from a few different generations – all coming together here in a really wonderful performance! The group is grounded by work from Yoshio Suzuki on bass and Shingo Okudaira on drums – and features tenor from Kosuke Mine and trombone from Shigeharu Mukai – both players who gave us killer albums from the 70s – alongside pianist Soichi Noriki and trumpeter Tomonao Hara. Tracks are nicely structured, different than you might expect from the "jam session" title – and tunes include "Cleopatra's Dream", "EJ Blues", "Norwegian Wood", "Night In Tunisia", "What A Wonderful World", and "Ellen David". BongaAngola 72/74 ... CD
Morabeza/Lusafrica (France), Early 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A pair of classic albums, served up here in a single set! First up is the sound of Angola, circa 1972 – served up here in a beautiful album of songs from Bonga! The music is relatively spare – mostly just lead acoustic guitar, bass, and percussion – the latter of which is played by Bonga himself, almost always with this lively quality that really matches his vocals – which themselves are filled with all these fantastic inflections that almost remind us of salsa singers of the time – no surprise, given how much Latin music styles were hitting the scene in West Africa during the 60s and 70s. But the style here is very different, too – as Bonga's richly expressive in the way he uses his voice – almost more folkloric, given the acoustic guitar instrumentation – yet surprisingly powerful too, despite the spareness. Titles include "Ku Tando", "Balumukeno", "Uengi Dia Ngola", "Paxi Ni Ngongo", "Muimbo Ua Sabalu", and "Muadikime". Angola 74 is a beautifully sophisticated setting for the voice of Bonga – as he works here with lively small group backings, and a bit of larger orchestrations as well! There's this fantastic blend of folk roots and modernism in the music – maybe a bit like some of the more experimental work from Havana at the time, but a bit like some Brazilian projects too – as the enigmatic vocal inflections of the leader mix with his own percussion – all given nice shadings in color by acoustic guitar. Titles include "Venda Poro", "Kubangela", "Ma Kongo", "Kinga Kueta", "Ghinawa", "Roots", and "Marika". CD

Toshiyuki HondaCC Rex ... CD
Pit Inn (Japan), 2021. New Copy ... $22.99 28.99
Saxophonist Toshiyuki Honda evokes some of the spirit of his classic Burning Waves album here – working with some slight fusion touches, in a way that reminds us just how strongly his reedwork can soar in just the right setting! Honda blows both soprano and alto here, and shares arrangements on the album with Soichi Noriki, who plays both acoustic and electric piano – always with this soulful flow that really matches the crisp imagination of Honda's saxophone lines. The bassist, Gregg Lee, is also electric – and the rest of the combo features Shingo Okudaira on drums, and May Inoue on guitar, which is often used in these warmly chromatic ways. Titles include "Nile", "Magic Mushroom", "Horizon", "CC Rex", "Last Ballad", and a nice take on the Chick Corea classic "La Fiesta". CD

✨✧ VariousFell From The Sun – Downtempo & After Hours 1990/1991 ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of modern mellow music – served up in a set that features very different territory than the usual sorts of compilations given to us by Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs – not the older music that they put together so well, but work from an early 90s moment when the duo were a rising part of the British scene as Saint Etienne! Yet despite that connection, they nicely provide a generous overview of a slightly different vibe – mellow tracks that followed in the wake of the big Brit dance explosion of the late 80s – not entirely the downtempo modes that you might expect, at least in the way that "downtempo" has come to mean instrumental hip hop over the years – and instead, some nicely kicked back tracks from some of the more creative studio talents of the time! Titles include "Never Get Out The Boat (flying mix)" by The Aloof, "Spiritual High (moodfood megamix)" by Moodswings, "Floatation" by The Grid, "Afrika (love & laughter rmx)" by History, "Cascades (hypnotone mix)" by Sheer Taft, "It Could Not Happen (essential trance hall mix)" by Critical Rhythm, "Higher Than The Sun (higher than the Orb ext mix)" by Primal Scream, "Snappiness (7" edit)" by BBG, "I Don't Even Know If I Should Call You (Marshall Jefferson symphony mix)" by Soul Family Sensation, "Temple Head (Pacific mix airwaves)" by Transglobal Underground, and "Speedwell (radio edit)" by Saint Etienne. Pharoah SandersPharoah Sanders – Live At Fabrik Hamburg 1980 ... CD
Jazz Line (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Stunning live work from the great Pharoah Sanders – a set that's right up there with his best for the Teresa label in the 80s, but which also has some of the bite of his later Impulse material too! Tracks are long and modal – that groove that always seems to unlock the most soulful, mystical currents in Sanders' tenor – and the group is superb, with this beautiful work on bass from the young Curtis Lundy, plus John Hicks on piano and Idris Muhammad on drums – the latter of whom is in that looser mode he reopened in the 80s, and very different than his 70s funk years. Tracks are all nice and long – and titles include "Dr Pitt", "Greetings To Idris", "You Gotta Have Freedom", "It's Easy To Remember", and "The Creator Has A Masterplan". CD

✨✧ Roberto PregadioErika ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A naked woman in a giant hand? They've already got our attention – and we haven't even heard the music! Fortunately, the music is every bit as great as you'd guess from the cover – the best sort of slinky Italian soundtrack, served up in a mix of haunting melodies and really offbeat sounds that never fail to delight! Keyboards and woodwinds find a similar sense of space as in the music of Ennio Morricone – and despite the nudity on the cover, the overall sound is never too cheesy or too oversexed – just perfectly balanced between lightness and dark, in a sublime blend of instrumentation and production! CD features 23 tracks in all – nearly 75 minutes of music! CD

Jaimie BranchFly Or Die Live ... CD
International Anthem, 2021. New Copy 2CDs ... $13.99 14.99
Trumpeter Jaimie Branch has been giving us great music for a number of years – but honestly, she really knocks it out of the park on this live set – a record that's even more amazing than her previous two efforts with a similar title! The set's a double-length performance – and Branch's trumpet is really just a small part of the sound – as the quartet work together in these really amazing ways – with a well-blended sound that moves into all this sonic territory way more than familiar jazz – thanks to brilliant contributions from Chad Taylor on drums and mbira, Lester St Louis on cello and cymbal, and Jason Ajemian on bass – all players who really move around a lot, shift the sound of their instruments, and step into the brilliantly creative territory opened up by the leader! Titles include "Prayer For Amerikka (parts 1 & 2)", "Twenty Three N Me (Jupiter redux)", "Reflections On A Broken Sea", "Birds Of Paradise", "Leaves Of Glass", "The Storm", "Walzer", "Sun Tines", and "Theme 001". ✨✧ Neneh CherryBlank Project ... CD
Smalltown Supersound (Sweden), 2014. New Copy ... $4.99 15.99
Some of the most striking work we've heard from Neneh Cherry in years – and a great follow-up to her previous project with The Thing! This set has Neneh working with producer Kieran Hebden – who returns Cherry to the offbeat, arty sound of her early years on the British scene – particularly her excellent work with Rip Rig & Panic! As with that period, the rhythms here are key – but are also rhythms that really veer from the usual – odd basslines and beats that provide a jagged bottom underneath Cherry's soulfully flowing vocals – a sense of counterpoint that really gives the album a lot of power. Titles include "Naked", "Spit Three Times", "Blank Project", "Cynical", "422", "Out Of The Black", "Dossier", and "Everything". CD
Also available Blank Project ... CD 7.99

✨✧ Susan AlcornCanto ... CD
Relative Pitch, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Susan Alcorn has certainly become one of the most striking jazz musicians in recent years – and one of the few artists to ever use pedal steel in the context of free improvisation and more avant sounds! Yet here, Alcorn is also working in territory that has a bit more structure – using her Septeto Del Sur group, on tunes that have a beautifully evocative vibe! The project is maybe to Alcorn's more avant work what Charlie Haden's Liberation Music group was to his – as Susan works alongside the guitar of Luis Alvarez, charango of Francisco Araya, flute and quena of Rodrigo Bobadilla, cuatro and drums of Claudio Araya, and violin of Danka Villaneuva – all players who help Alcorn expand on concepts borrowed from Chilean folk music, and turned into modern instrumental experiments – as warmer themes mix with bolder improvised moments. Titles include "El Derecho De Vivir En Paz", "Suite Para Todos", "Mercedes Sosa", and the three part "Cantos" suite. CD

✨✧ Jaimie BranchFly Or Die 2 – Bird Dogs Of Paradise ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from Jaimie Branch – one that's even more powerful than the first Fly Or Die set – which is saying a heck of a lot, given that that record hit most of us with a pretty hard punch! The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. The record also features guest work from Ben Lamar Gay and Marvin Tate on voice, Matt Schneider on 12 string guitar, and Dan Bitney on percussion and synth – and titles include "Prayer For Amerikkka (parts 1 & 2)", "Lesterlude", "Love Song", "Simple Silver Surfer", "Bird Dogs Of Paradise", "Nuevo Roquero Estereo", and "Twentey Three N Me Jupiter Redux".
