An unusual early album by Joe Zawinul – one cut at the start of his early fame with Cannonball Adderley (and years before his success in Weather Report) – but in an easygoing way that's a perfect setting for the aging Ben Webster! Joe's not funking things up the way he did with Cannon, and instead he's gentle and soulful – often hitting more sensitive moments that match the emotive blowing of Webster nicely. The recording quality is great – and captures Ben especially well on the ballads – and other players include Sam Jones or Richard Davis on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums, plus Thad Jones on cornet on a few tracks. Titles include "Frog Legs", "Evol Deklaw Ni", "The Governor", and "Soulmates". LP, Vinyl record album

His lyrical writing and playing are extremely refreshing, and he manages to spin out long free lines on the piano, while also still keeping a very soulful groove. This mid 60's recording for Atlantic features Wilson in a trio with Philly Joe Jones and Leroy Vinnegar, and the record is divided up into "2 sides" – one fast, and one slow. The fast side has Wilson playing a bit more boppishly than usual – on tracks like his own "Kinta" and "Good Time Joe", and Bud Powell's "Glass Enclosure". The slow side is more of our favorite, and features some very nice reditions of material like "The Good Life" and "Once Upon A Summertime". CD

The "pair" here is Phil Woods and Gene Quill – both blowing beautifully on alto sax, with that sharp edge and deep tone that made both players a real standout in the 50s scene! The Woods/Quill mix has been documented elsewhere, but the sound here is rawer than some of those other dates – a bit less formal, with a nice blowing session sort of groove. There's also a pair of trumpets, too – Donald Byrd and Kenny Dorham – and rhythm is from the trio of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. All tracks are quite long – and the album features 4 titles that include "The Stanley Stomper", "Cool Aid", "Suddenly It's Spring", and "Pairing Off". LP, Vinyl record album
