Material recorded early in the Blue Note career of Jimmy Smith – but not issued until the mid 60s, and often overlooked at the time! The record's still in the spare trio mode of the early Jimmy Smith years – but is a bit lighter and more lyrical than before – a nice change from the harder tones of Jimmy's early trio records, and a hint and the expansive lines he'd take on later recordings! The lineup features mostly Kenny Burrell on guitar and PhillyJoeJones on drums – plus a few additional tracks that use Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums – and titles include "These Foolish Things", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "One For PhillyJoe", and a nice version of Monk's "Hackensack". CD features 4 bonus tracks – "Willow Weep For Me", "Ain't No Use", "Angel Eyes", and "Ain't That Love" – all with vocals by Bill Henderson! CD

Clark Terry —
Cruising ... LP Milestone, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-done 2LP set that brings together the best moments from four different early Riverside albums from trumpeter Clark Terry – selections from – Serenade To A Bus Seat, Duke With A Difference, In Orbit, and Top and Bottom Brass – sessions that feature work from Thelonious Monk on piano, Johnny Griffin on tenor, and PhillyJoeJones on drums! Titles include "Cruising", "Digits", "Top N Bottom", and "Let's Cool One". LP, Vinyl record album
A great early date as a leader from trumpeter Clark Terry – one cut during the stretch when he was keeping company with players like Thelonious Monk and Johnny Griffin! The latter player is a key member of Terry's group here – as Johnny's tenor adds a nice sharp edge to Clark's trumpet – mixing modern and bop inflections wonderfully in a solid quintet setting that also features Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and PhillyJoeJones on drums. Titles include "Serenade To A Bus Seat", "That Old Black Magic", "Cruising", "Boardwalk", "Boomerang", and "Digits". CD

Ben Webster & Joe Zawinul —
Soulmates ... LP Riverside, 1963. Very Good ...
Out Of Stock
An unusual early album by Joe Zawinul – one cut at the start of his early fame with Cannonball Adderley (and years before his success in Weather Report) – but in an easygoing way that's a perfect setting for the aging Ben Webster! Joe's not funking things up the way he did with Cannon, and instead he's gentle and soulful – often hitting more sensitive moments that match the emotive blowing of Webster nicely. The recording quality is great – and captures Ben especially well on the ballads – and other players include Sam Jones or Richard Davis on bass, PhillyJoeJones on drums, plus Thad Jones on cornet on a few tracks. Titles include "Frog Legs", "Evol Deklaw Ni", "The Governor", and "Soulmates". LP, Vinyl record album
Pianist Jack Wilson is one of our favorite underdiscovered talents of the 60's – and we treasure all of the albums we can find by him. His lyrical writing and playing are extremely refreshing, and he manages to spin out long free lines on the piano, while also still keeping a very soulful groove. This mid 60's recording for Atlantic features Wilson in a trio with PhillyJoeJones and Leroy Vinnegar, and the record is divided up into "2 sides" – one fast, and one slow. The fast side has Wilson playing a bit more boppishly than usual – on tracks like his own "Kinta" and "Good Time Joe", and Bud Powell's "Glass Enclosure". The slow side is more of our favorite, and features some very nice reditions of material like "The Good Life" and "Once Upon A Summertime". CD

Phil Woods —
Pairing Off ... LP Prestige, 1956. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
The "pair" here is Phil Woods and Gene Quill – both blowing beautifully on alto sax, with that sharp edge and deep tone that made both players a real standout in the 50s scene! The Woods/Quill mix has been documented elsewhere, but the sound here is rawer than some of those other dates – a bit less formal, with a nice blowing session sort of groove. There's also a pair of trumpets, too – Donald Byrd and Kenny Dorham – and rhythm is from the trio of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and PhillyJoeJones on drums. All tracks are quite long – and the album features 4 titles that include "The Stanley Stomper", "Cool Aid", "Suddenly It's Spring", and "Pairing Off". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s OJC pressing. Cover has light wear, bumped corners, and some minor flaking at the spine.)
Includes 10 tracks from PhillyJoeJones, Lou Donaldson, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Donald Bryd, Gene Ammons, Joe Henderson, Blue Mitchell, and Brother Jack McDuff. CD
