The record's a completely cooking little session – one that mixes the raw, noisier styles of other Davis albums with a focus, funked-up energy that's really set loose in the freer standards of the Japanese scene – all to come up with a sound that's completely otherworldly, and which is light years ahead of most mainstream fusion from the period. Haunting western work from Francesco De Masi – a film score that mixes nice bits of electric guitar and bass in with the larger orchestrations! A number of tracks here also used some great harmonica, too – very much in the best Morricone-styled sound of the period, but warmed up in different directions by some of De Masi's string-based backdrops. The main theme – "Seven Men" – is a doozy – and other tracks include "The Pursuit", "To Durango", "The Massacre", "Stagecoach Attack", "The Night Attack", "Bandits", and "The Man Without A Home". Great Japanese pressing – with 22 tracks in all! CD

A really beautiful little soundtrack from Francesco De Masi – scored with a depth of feeling that's really surprising, and which goes way past the obvious! There's some beautiful woodwind passages that arc and turn with a quality that's almost fragile – yet bold enough to paint a vivid picture of the western setting of the film – mixed with some more dramatic numbers that still have a relatively unusual feel – almost as if De Masi was working as hard as he could to create a soundtrack that was different from other westerns of the period – while still staying within a familiar instrumental structure. Maurizio Graf sings the driving title tune "Find A Man" – and the CD features a whopping 27 titles that include "Emily E Johnny", "La Medaglia", "Addio Orace", "Santana E Johnny", "L'Assalto Di Santana", "Paura Notturna", "Non C'E Scampo", "Passi Nel Tempo", and "Johnny Sulla Croce". We can remember when this movie spooked the heck out of us – and now it remains as a charming period piece from the days when New York was overrun by gangsters dressed up in baseball uniforms or overalls – representing a version of the Big Apple during the bankrupt 70s that's turned out to have more longstanding charm than the gang in Clockwork Orange! One of our favorite records of all time! We've got to admit, this one's an acquired taste, but if you dig cool LA studio pop from the early 70's, this record's a real treasure! Nick DeCaro was probably best known to the world as an instrumental arranger for A&M (he did a lot of the Claudine Longet albums), but this record from the early 70's has him singing in a set of cool spacey tracks that mix studio pop and jazz for a sound that's unlike anything else we've ever heard before. Nick's backed by a tight group that includes LA jazz players like Arthur Adams, Wilton Felder, Paul Humphrey, Harvey Mason, and David T. Walker – and the sound is very compressed, very laidback, and very very hip. Tracks include "Under The Jamaican Moon", "Wailing Wall", and great versions of "Getting Mighty Crowded" and Stevie Wonder's "Angie Girl". Remember, it's an acquired taste, but if you like stuff like middle period Steely Dan or Maria Muldaur, you'll really dig this one! LP, Vinyl record album

Lou's never been a light foot at any point in his career – and even on this earlier, pre-funk session he blows with a heck of a lot of soul! The album's a killer from Lou Donaldson's mid period stint at Blue Note – a set that's informed by bop ideals, but which also explores ideas in a more relaxed, early soul jazz mode – one that uses extra percussion from Ray Barretto to kick up the grooves with a nice little swing, and which also features some sublime piano lines from the great Herman Foster, making one of his few key Donaldson appearances here! Lou's alto work is sparkling throughout – crackling with life, but never too full of itself – and other players include Peck Morrison on bass and Jimmy Wormworth on drums. Titles include a few originals like "Hog Maw" and "Light Foot", plus standards like "Stella By Starlight" and "Green Eyes". CD

Excellent early work by Lou Donaldson – recorded years before his electric funky period, and hard-grooving in the best Blue Note harbop style of the time! Lou's work on alto is impeccable here – crisp, clear, and freed from a Parker-like influence to roam freely in soulful territory that represented some of the best work of its type on the alto at the time! The group is tight and very in the pocket – with excellent Donaldson accompanist Herman Foster on piano, plus trumpet from Donald Byrd, bass from Peck Morrison, and drums from Art Taylor. Titles include "Move It", "LD Blues", "Old Folks", and "That Good Old Feeling". CD

Excellent middle period work by the Dramatics – recorded after their years at Stax, with a slightly smoother groove, and featuring some great tunes that really sparkle! By this point, the group were hitting a Detroit modern mode – with less of the rough edges of the Stax work, which meant that the harmonies were even tighter than ever – perfectly placed on the best cuts, with a precision you wouldn't have expected a few years earlier. Songwriting is still great – and this 16 track set features many fine numbers from their ABC LPs of the late 70s when the group were working with Don Davis. Titles include "Be My Girl", "Love Is Missing From Our Lives", "Door To Your Heart", "Stop Your Weeping", "Shake It Well", "You're Foolin You", and "Do What You Want Be What You Are", one of the greatest 70s ballad tracks ever! Some great funky grooves by this legendary British ensemble – featuring excellent keyboard work by Brian Auger, recorded during the period when he was really beginning to stretch out a bit, and hit a much more open-ended kind of sound. Julie Driscoll is still on vocals, singing in her raw sound, but Brian's Trinity group gets a fair number of nice instrumental moments on the set – which are greatly appreciated! Titles include the classic and sample laden "Light My Fire", "Czechoslovakia", "Finally Found You Out", "In Search Of The Sun", "Ellis Island", "I've Got Life", and "Save The Country". A late triumph for Dylan, and solidly delivering on the promise of his return to excellence on Time Out Of Mind a few years earlier – setting foot into the new millennium by hitting even higher point in a pretty incredible comeback period! Dylan produces himself here, credited as Jack Frost, and he and his road tested band bring the varied rootsy vibe of his latter day sound to the forefront after the moodier, murkier vibe of the previous record. A genuine classic, with songs Dylan kept in his live setlist for many years to come – clearly the man himself is proud of this one, and rightfully so. Titles include "Tweedle Dee & Teedle Dum", "Mississippi", "Summer Days", "High Water (For Charley Patton)", "Honest With Me", "Po'Boy", "Cry A While", "Sugar Baby" and more. CD

The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Warmly mellow work from Steve Eaton – a singer with a nicely laidback take on blue-eyed soul, served up in some lean arrangements with a nice jazzy vibe – all a nice change from some of the bigger, more commercial work of the period! The indie approach of the set gives the whole thing the feel of a record from a half decade before – as Steve unabashedly puts himself forward vocally, while also handling both acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, piano, and more – with support from some equally easygoing session musicians too! Titles include the wonderfully groovy "Without Out" and "All In Love Say I" – plus "Got Me Moanin", "Rakin Leaves In The Wind", "Hurricanes & Tornadoes", "You're Not A Hero", "Friendly Stealer", and "Old Smart Big & Kind". Eire Apparent have some pretty famous names on the back cover of this debut set – including Jimi Hendrix, who acted as producer – and a young Robert Wyatt, who is credited with "help and encouragement"! Yet the group are more than great enough on their own, even without name-dropping references – and the record's got his nice blend of light psych touches, harder rock guitar solos, and more – all swirled together at a level that almost feels like some of the hipper Harvest or Parlophone albums of the period – maybe no surprise, as the group actually hail from the British Isles. Titles include "Yes I Need Someone", "The Clown", "Mr Guy Fawkes", "Someone Is Sure To Want You", "Let Me Stay", "Morning Glory", "Magic Carpet", and "Captive In The Sun". CD

One of the trippiest soundtracks of the 60s – a wonderful blend of psych tracks from The Electric Flag, and moogier electronic moments from the great Paul Beaver! The Flag are at their best here – playing tunes that move from short bursts of fuzz to longer jams – laid out with great work from Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites on guitars, Barry Goldberg on organ, and Buddy Miles on drums – with a nice sense of arrangement and juxtaposition that rivals Spirit's equally great soundtrack material for Model Shop. This one's more of an all-out rocker – although the moog balances things out nicely – and the whole thing's definitely a cut above the usual thrown-together exploitation soundtrack of the period. There's lots of little crazy cuts, and a long one called "Fine Jung Thing" – plus the titles "Gettin' Hard", "Peter Gets Off", "The Other Ed Norton", "Psyche Soap", and "Joint Passing". The Electric Prunes are maybe best-remembered in terms of their collaboration with David Axelrod – but here, you'll hear the young group already sounding pretty dam great on their own – working with a set of their own arrangements, to create that moody, eerie vibe that instantly made the group one of the standout acts on the American scene of the psych generation! One of the tightest, grooviest albums on the short-lived rock years of the mostly-jazz Mainstream Records label – a treasure trove of tuneful tracks that spin out like some of the best late 60s work by The Zombies or The Left Banke! There's a starkness to the tunes that recalls some of the other Mainstream efforts of the period – although the overall sound is warmer, with great harmonies from two singers, in a way that really opens up the more melodic elements of the tunes, while still keeping some of that psychedelic edge that makes all the Mainstream releases from this time so wonderful. A rootsy set with a jazzy vibe – a set that blends the wonderful vocals of Eloah with some heavy percussion, soaring horns, and other great instrumental touches – all in a blend of modes that's pretty darn unique! The album might belong in the school of samba, but it's got a much more ambitious vibe overall – as if those core samba inspirations were taken to new heights through some of the larger, fuller arrangements that were bubbling in the Brazilian scene of the period – as you might find in the music of Edu Lobo or Marcos Valle! Eloah's also got a power that's all her own, too – some of the soul of a singer like Elza Soares, but also the kind of majesty we love in the music of Zelia Barbosa – or in a male version, maybe Geraldo Vandre – who's an equally unique artist of his own. The whole thing's a real lost treasure – with a vibe that's more late 60s than late 70s, given the production and instrumentation – and titles include "Oxala", "Exu", "Ogun", "Xango", "Yemanja Berimbau", "Axe Opo Afonja Aluja", and "Logun Ede". The excellent, underappreciated mid 80s compilation of rare and unreleased Roky Erickson live recordings and studio material – recorded from the mid 70s to early 80s – with his backing bands The Explosives, The Aliens and Blieb Alien, plus a couple of sparely haunting beauties backed by guitarist Jack Johnson. It's great stuff – with some eccentric lyrics and some raucous instrumentation, but still finely crafted – as were Roky's proper studio albums from the period. Way more than an odds-and-ends compilation – this is just as vital as any Roky Erickson albums during this amazing period! A previously-unissued live date from Bill Evans – recorded in Copenhagen right at the end of the 60s, in a very hip trio that features Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums! There seems to be a bit more force than usual in Bill's left hand – a pulse that comes through nicely on a few tracks in particular – offsetting the brilliantly understated lyrical modes that always makes his music from this period so wonderful. The set features nicely dark versions of "Nardis" and "Waltz For Debby" – plus "Time Remembered", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Round Midnight", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", and "Emily". CD

We were pretty late in acknowledging the badassery of Rod Stewart during this period, both solo and with The Faces, and boy does this record ever sound amazing to us now! CD1 features some of Merrell's earliest music – a host of early singles by Merrell & The Exiles, some of which were issued on the Glenn and Golden Crown labels – mixed here with rare unissued titles too – for a whopping 19 tracks that offer up a rare look at Fankhauser's earliest years! CD2 features the classic Fapardokly record – a lost bit of legend from the west coast scene of the 60s – and a record that's maybe best-known as a showcase for the early genius of Merrell Fankhauser – who wrote most of the songs on the set, a good number of which were actually recorded for the record by his previous group, The Exiles! Yet despite that little bit of trivia, there's a great vibe going on here – a seminal shift in the Cali scene from garagey work to trippier modes – served up beautifully on titles that include "Glass Chandelier", "Suzie Cryin", "Tomorrow's Girl", "Lila", "Mr Clock", "No Retreat", "Gone To Pot", "When I Get Home", "Supermarket", and "The Music Scene". CD3 features the album Things, recorded by Merrell Fankhauser & HMS Bounty – a perfect blend of Fankhauser's earlier garage rock modes and latter trippier styles! The tunes are short and wonderfully tuneful – produced at Gold Star studios, with a simple, straightforward style that makes all the deftness of the songwriting come through even more – an approach that, although supposedly steeped in Pacific Ocean inspiration, almost feels more like that great moment when some UK groups of the mid 60s were tripping out, but not too much. A few short years before, Merrell Fankhauser was recording garage and psych on the LA scene – but here, he steps off the latter with a bit of post-60s hangover – working with a current of darkness that really changes things up, while still providing a great outlet for his legendary work on guitar – and his mindblowing sense of a lyric! Titles include "Ballad Of Brother Lew", "Eternal Thirst", "Too Naked For Demetrius", "Mumbella Baye Tu La", "The Clouds Went That Way", and "Nobody Wants To Shine". CD5 features MU's The Last Album – 20 more tracks recorded in 1974, but unissued for many years – and CD6 features the legendary Maui album from the enigmatic Merrell Fankhauser – a self-released set that drew inspiration from his time in Hawaii – even though the set was mostly recorded in LA and San Francisco! The tunes are beautiful – nicely evolved from Merrell's psych of earlier years, with a much more personal vibe – yet all without some of those west coast cliches that were creeping into more mainstream music of the period. You might get the vibe partly right if you could maybe imagine a more personal singer/songwriter take on the AOR vibe of the period – with leaner, better instrumentation and unslick production – but that's also only part of the picture too! Guitar jazz genius from the amazing Tal Farlow – working here at the height of his powers on a classic session for Verve – a real standout album from the 50s, and one with some slightly more modern overtones than even other Farlow sessions at the time! Part of the strength of the set is the piano work of Eddie Costa – which dances nicely in between the notes, often creating the same sense of counterpoint and interplay as on Costa's excellent albums with Sal Salvador from the same period. Farlow's tone is amazing throughout – rough and pointed, yet always fluid – and titles include "Lean On Me", "The More I See You", "Stella By Starlight", "Topsy", "All The Things You Are", and "Wonder Why". CD

An essential Art Farmer session from the mid 50s – and a magnificent batch of hardbop tracks that we'd rank with some of our favorite work on Blue Note! The group is incredibly strong – with Hank Mobley on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all coming together with a magical in-the-pocket groove that persists on nearly every track. Farmer's still at a formative stage here – and he's going for a much harder sound than usual, with an excellent tone and extremely well calculated solos throughout. Mobley's at his best from this period, and his playing puts this session more in the tightly executed Blue Note camp (ala some of the Horace Silver late 50s recordings), than it does the Prestige/New Jazz blowing session mode. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Ad-Dis-Un", "By Myself", "Farmer's Market", "With Prestige", and "Wailin' With Hank". CD

A tremendous comeback for the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet – recording here in the mid 80s with original members Farmer, Golson, and Curtis Fuller – plus tremendous rhythm support from the trio of Mickey Tucker, Ray Drummon, and Marvin Smitty Smith! The session has less of the tightly snapping groove that was the initial Jazztet calling card in the 60s – and comes across with some of the warmer, more chromatic tones that showed up on the group's last few recordings – and even more so in Art Farmer's work for many years to come. Tracks are all longish, and filled with many interesting twists and turns – and overall the album recalls the brilliant economy of Farmer's best work from the period, with some of the subtle soul that made Golson a player to keep an ear on strongly during the 80s. The Feelies going strong in the late 80s – as timeless and influential as ever! Only Life might not be chiseled into the post punk/indie rock Pantheon as prominently as their underground iconic Crazy Rhythms, but this really is a classic we hold nearly as dear! The hypnotically layered guitars slow build to perfection, the production is neatly void of late 80s recording studio technological trends – which seems like a minor miracle, seeing how poorly so many of their peers' albums of the period have aged – and the always great Velvet Underground-inspired vocals even culminate in a nice cover of Lou Reed's "What Goes On". Lovely lyrical sounds from Tommy Flanagan – a pianist who can be as deft as a bopper, but also bring in some richer currents of soul as well! Case in point is this great album from the late 70s – a time when Flanagan wasn't as much in the recording spotlight as the decade before, but a period when he'd actually matured a lot more as a player – able to step effortlessly between both his inclinations, especially when working with a group this great – a trio that features George Mraz on bass and Elvin Jones on drums! Tommy's got a touch on the keys that's subtle at times, but extremely powerful – a knowledge of notes and colors that's never overstated, but always right on the money. Early early work from Aretha's foxy sister – recorded in a mode that's similar to some of Aretha's Columbia work from the same period! Erma's singing in a bluesier style than on her Brunswick recordings – working in an approach that's almost like Ruth Brown on Atlantic – singing with larger backings that occasionally have some backing singers and strings on some tracks, and which are more in a rocking soul mode on others. Early 80s clubby funk & soul from Freeez – a pretty sweet mix of period synth and boogie soul with far richer, live instrumentation and solid, hooky songwriting! Freeez recorded Gonna Get You in Manhattan – and you can certainly hear the NYC culture of the time flowing nicely in the groove. The songs are really good, and catchy enough to have caught on a much bigger level – with male and female lead and chorus backing vocals, and the synths and drum machines pulse and thump underneath congas, bongos and other percussion, Rhodes, piano and other elements. A really great album from the LA scene of the early 90s – very different than most of the west coast work of the period, and much more in the spirit of some of the east coast work from the Native Tongues posse! The group features early work from Mikah 9, Self Jupiter, PEACE, and Aceyalone – all working in a really inventive mix of jazzy and inventive samples that come together in a great way – leaner than the layering of Q Tip, and not nearly as polished as work of its type would sound on bigger labels. An excellent serious score from Gerald Fried – very different than some of his sci fi or TV work, and handled with a depth that really fits the material! Fried's very much in the social realism mode of the period – not above using whimsy when needed for the lighter moments, but often going for some of the right light scoring with elements that are modern enough to evoke deeper emotion in a subtle way, very different from more mainstream Hollywood gloss. The film's a lost classic of American independent cinema, and Fried's score really fits the material – presented here in a package that includes 24 tracks in all – including a vocal performance of the theme "One Potato Two Potato" by Alan Arkin, and a short commentary by Fried. A mid 80s film that's scored by Dominic Frontiere in a mix of modes – some lofty orchestral pieces that are positively airborne in their sound and structure, with a great sense of American pride and drama – and a few more period pieces to set the scene for the 1920s narrative. Titles include "Rabbit Hunt", "The Wolf Pack", "Saw The Fire", "Real Prize", "The Crash", and "The Forest". CD

A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being a sideman for most of the rest of his career?) The set's cut in that laidback blowing session mode of the Savoy hardbop years – with tremendous work from Benny Golson on tenor, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Al Harewood on drums – all working through easily-handled tunes that include "Minor Vamp", "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Twelve Inch". Two rare albums from this great pianist – back to back on a single CD! First up is Jazz Argentino – key work from Ruben Lopez Furst, a wonderful pianist from the Argentine scene of the 60s – heard here on one of his greatest albums ever! Despite the local placement in the title, the set's got a really universal appeal – a quality that easily puts Baby Lopez Furst in the company of Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, or a rare few imaginative pianists from up north! Furst's sense of color and timing are wonderful – ringing out fluidly, yet always with a sense of surprise that keeps us hanging on each new note – nothing that's ever hokey or heard-before – handled here with a vibrancy that's simply stunning. Many numbers are trio tracks, but the set also features guest trumpet and tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Israel", "Un Abajea Duriente", "Los Viejos", "Al Este Del Sol", "Sometime Ago", and "Cartas De Amor". Next is Jazz En La Universidad – one of the real highlights of the Argentine jazz scene of the 60s – a seminal album from pianist Ruben "Baby" Lopez – easily one of that country's greatest jazz musicians in the decade! Ruben's got a sound that opens up with the lyrical sense of space and tone first introduced by Bill Evans, but he's also more note-full at other moments – playing with a command of the piano that would have made him huge, had he recorded on the American or European scenes of the time! There's a warm balance between his instrument, the bass of Jorge Gonzalez, and drums of Nestor Astratta – one that goes past conventional piano trio modes, and which really reminds us of our favorite Saba/MPS sessions of the period. One of the greatest French female singers of the 60s – presented here in a classic collection of work! If you've gotta dig one gal vocalist of the Parisian scene of the time, Gall is definitely your girl – as her brash, bold style of singing really sums up the hippest, grooviest French styles of the time! Many tracks here were penned by some of the best French arrangers and composers of the period – including a fair bit by Serge Gainsbourg, who really helped Gall find her groove, and moved her from being just another girl singer to one of the more powerful 60s voices in French pop! There's even a few funky numbers in the mix, and the rest mostly have a modly snapping 60s groove – of the sort that's being heavily revived these days – and titles include "Pense A Moi", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", "Attends Ou Va T'En", "Nous Ne Sommes Pas Des Anges", "Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son", "N'Ecoute Pas Les Idoles", "Baby Pop", "Les Sucettes", "Cet Air-La", "Bebe Requin", and "24/36". The last solo Jerry Garcia album, and a record that's a great illustration of just how far Garcia had come as an artist away from the Grateful Dead! The tunes are still full of that sunnier, more compact energy the group were doing on their own records in the period – but Jerry's also stepping out more with a sense of presence in the lead – and working in a lineup that has a lot more focus and punch than his more acoustic outings. There's plenty of great organ on the record – a bit by Merl Saunders, most by Melvin Seals – and bassist John Khan handles other instruments as well, and arranges most of the tunes. Titles include Jerry's version of the Dylan classic "Knockin On Heaven's Door" – plus "Midnight Getaway", "Run For The Roses", "Leave The Little Girl Alone", and "Valerie" – plus Garcia's take on the Clyde McPhatter soul tune "Without Love". A stunning set of vocal recordings by Tlahoun Gessesse – one of the most important singers during the golden age of Ethiopian Music – caught here on a set of sides that sadly saw that period coming to an end! The tracks on the set are mostly from the early 70s, a time that saw great political changes in Ethiopia – and tremendous censorship and restrictions on cultural production. Gessesse's vocals during this time are perhaps even more melancholy and heartfelt than before, and he's working here on a number of sides with the legendary Mulatu – with arrangements that have a angular, almost modernist edge. Despite the language barriers that keep us from understanding what Gessesse's singing about, there's an incredibly evocative quality to the work that transcends time and place – and titles include "Alegntaye", "Aykedashem Iebe", "Ene Negn Wey Antchi", "Yene Felagote", "Beyet New Mengedu", "Lantchi Biye", "Tchuheten Betsemu", and two versions of "Kulun Mankwalesh". Genius material from the team of tenorist Stan Getz and Brazilian bossa legend Joao Gilberto – reunited here in a brief mid 70s period, after their famous Verve recordings of the early 60s – and in a way that shows all the changes both artists had gone through over the years! Stan and Joao would go onto produce the sublime Best Of Two Worlds studio record during this same stretch – but this never-issued live date is arguably even deeper and darker than that record – as Stan blows with the stronger current of melancholy he seemed to unlock in period of his Sweet Rain record and onward – and Joao himself does all the singing here, without help from any female vocalist – with that bluer, more personal vibe he hit on his incredible record from 1973. The maturity and emotion of both musicians comes through right away – and support is from the trio of Joanne Brackeen on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all wonderful musicians who also know just the right moment to step back and let the two giants dominate when needed. The core sound comes from Ghania's roots in gnawa – vocals and guimbri from the leader, mixed with rising voices and percussion from a larger ensemble – the topped with the sorts of searing solos that only Pharoah can deliver – usually at a level that's a lot more outside than most of his other recordings of the period! Unlike some other Laswell records, Bill doesn't seem to be involved at all in the music – and instead really just steps back and lets Sanders and Ghania really work magic together with the rest of the ensemble – on titles that include "Bala Moussaka", "Peace In Essaouria", "Salat Anbi", "Mahraba", "Casa Casa Atougra", "Boulandi Samawi", and "Hamdouchi". One of a trio of fantastic performances recorded by tenor giant Dexter Gordon at the Zurich Jazz Festival in 1975 – a set that has him blowing with all that late-life brilliance he brought to his best European recordings of the time! Yet also, possibly because of the festival setting, there's a sharpness here that's a bit different than some of Gordon's small club live dates of the period – this great sense of energy that comes through right away, and which also seems to come from the rest of the group too – a quartet lineup that includes Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums.
