Siouxsie & The Banshees —
Kaleidoscope ... LP PVC, 1980. Near Mint- ...

Sharply sinister work from Siouxsie Sioux and The Banshees – nicely hanging on the cusp of the punk edges of their earlier work, but also unfurling lots of the darkness to come! These guys do a heck of a lot with just a little space – that same economy of motion that's always made early Cure material so much better than all their overbloated copycats from later years. Titles include the classics "Christine" and "Happy House" – plus "Skin", "Tenant", "Trophy", "Hybrid", "Clockface", "Lunar Camel", "Desert Kisses", and "Red Face". LP, Vinyl record album

A set with two strong horn players upfront – but one that draws some equally fantastic energy from the bottom end of the group too – thanks to wonderful contributions from Kent Kessler on bass and Chris Corsano on drums! The musical qualities of tenorist Rodrigo Amado seem to just deepen more and more with each new release – there's a sense of soul here we might not have heard this strongly a few years before, one that really matches the work on the record from Joe McPhee – who blows soprano sax, pocket trumpet, and even a bit of pvc pipe – the last with that special sort of magic that's continued to make Joe such a vibrant player over the years. But we're also equally moved here by the basswork of Kent Kessler – who's got this way of matching his strengths with openness, at a level that's really echoed by the drums of Corsano – a mixture of boldness and sensitivity that's really wonderful. All tracks are long improvisations, recorded in Copehagen – and titles include "Resist", "Let The Free Be Men", "Never Surrender", and "Men Is Woman Is Man". CD
A very cool colored vinyl single – one that presents a limited issue of two tracks from the just-uncovered Both Directions At Once sessions by the John Coltrane quartet in 1963! The single features the great "Untitled Original 11383" – a song with a terrible name, but a really great sound – and the first new song uncovered in years by the group. It also features a very early take of "Impressions" – shorter and tighter than the more famous one! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Fantastic stuff through and through – and almost a "best of" best of collection from the 70s! The album's a key illustration of the genius of Earth Wind & Fire on Columbia Records – because by the time the set was released in 1978, most of the tracks were already well-known hits – but still had a soulful power and righteous undercurrent that few other chart acts could match. Maurice White, Charles Stepney, and the others have a perfect way of holding onto their deepest inspirations while honing their sills in the studio – and the results of that commitment are heard beautifully on tracks that include "Got To Get You Into My Life", "Shining Star", "Getaway", "Can't Hide Love", "Fantasy", "Reasons", "September", and "That's The Way Of The World".
