✨✧ CalenderHypertension (parts 1 & 2) (Pi Kappa) ... 7-inch
Pi Kappa, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A two part groover from this obscure east coast club combo – slowly building with some nice synth at the beginning, but acoustic beats underneath, and almost more of a funk track than a disco one, given the pace and the soulful feel overall. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jerry OFunky Four Corners/Soul Lover ... 7-inch
Boo Ga Loo, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of the best versions of "Funky Four Corners" we've ever heard! The bass is rattling along at a level so loud and heavy that it's bound to pop the top off your speaker – while Jerry screams and shouts his way through the lyrics in a way that would make James Brown proud, a fact that he even acknowledges when he shouts "Sorry JB!" at one point in the cut! "Soul Lover" is fantastic too – a funky answer song to "Tramp", with a similar hard sock beat, and a hard break at the intro, which is augmented here by conga work! Both cuts are great – and one of the best singles ever by Jerry O! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Laura LeeWanted: Lover, No Experience Necessary/Up Tight Good Man ... 7-inch
Chess, 1967. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great early work from Laura Lee – recorded in Muscle Shoals before her later work with Hot Wax! "Wanted" is a great little groover – a light bit of funk in the rhythm, and a jumping groove that pushes Laura's vocals over the top, singing a very catchy lyric in the "want ad" mode! "Up Tight Good Man" is her great version of the Penn/Oldham southern soul classic – done in a slowly burning style that brings out all the charm of the tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have light ring wear.)

James PhelpsLove Is A 5-Letter Word/I'll Do The Best I Can ... 7-inch
Argo, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99 6.99
Although James Phelps has a deep raw soul voice – he's matched here with some nice uptown arrangements courtesy of Phil Wright, for a sound that's a lot like some of the best solo Ben E. King solo stuff for Atlantic! "Love Is A 5-Letter Word" is a nice slowly-rolling track with a catchy chorus – and "I'll Do The Best" has an uptowny style that's wonderful – really one of those "shoulda been a hit" kind of tunes! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Tan label pressing.)

✨✧ Bobby RushChicken Heads/Mary Jane ... 7-inch
Galaxy, 1971. Good ... Out Of Stock
Funky funky Bobby! "Chicken Heads" is a great little bit of tripped-out bluesy funk – perfectly done in Bobby's funky 45 mode, with guitar slowly vamping and picking out a solo, and Bobby singing with ease in a deeply soulful mode. "Mary Jane" has a similar groove – although a bit funkier – and we can only imagine that all parties involved must have smoked a lot of it to make the cut cook so well! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Original pressing with flower etch. Labels have lots of marker and ring wear.)

✨✧ Soul MerchantsLight My Fire/For Wes ... 7-inch
Weis, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A very mellow, very dope verson of the famous Doors song! The cut is all instrumental – with a slowly meandering guitar groove, and the kind of slow funk rendition that always makes the cut great as an instrumental! Right up there with the best Johnny Harris version, and with some cool Varitone work that's pretty darn tasty! "For Wes" is a great one too – with a killer slow dope guitar groove, supposedly in a Wes Montgomery mode, but much more in the vein of underground hipsters like Cal Green or O'Donel Levy! The arrangements have a slight Latin tinge – for a great bit of slow LA funk that's very very nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Red and tan label pressing. Vinyl has some oxidation.)
