John ColtraneParis Concert ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1961. Used ... $2.99
A great addition to the live material the John Coltrane Quartet recorded for Impulse Records in the early 60s – long, live tracks from a Parisian concert, with performances that are extremely long and open-ended! The group isn't totally free – as free as they'd be on some of their overseas live performances a few years later – but they already stretch out magnificently on long takes of "Mr PC", "The Inch Worm" and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" – all with extremely expressive solos from Coltrane, plus piano from McCoy Tyner, bass from Jimmy Garrison, and drums from Elvin Jones! Dexter GordonSquirrel ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... $9.99
Rare unreleased live material from Dexter Gordon's best years – a 1967 performance that was recorded by Danish Radio at the Cafe Montmartre – the Copenhagen base where Gordon had set up camp overseas, and was very quickly hitting a whole new level of his music! That level is heard here very strongly – on the kind of long tracks that show what a superbly imaginative soloist he'd become – with help from Kenny Drew on piano, Bo Steif on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. All tracks are very long, with that totally solid, totally tight, totally confident solo style that became Gordon's stock-in-trade during these years – and titles include "The Squirrel", "Cheese Cake", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "You've Changed". Lee HazlewoodHouse Safe For Tigers ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1975. Used ... $3.99 7.99
One of the rarest Lee Hazlewood albums, and one of the coolest, too – the set falls a bit later than some of his other work on the Swedish scene – and, like Cowboy In Sweden, it's also a soundtrack too – but the vibe is different than that one, and almost shows this maturation of Lee's style – as if he's absorbing even more unusual elements during his time overseas, and finding a way to keep growing his sound away from his American years in LA! All the Hazlewood craft for songs and nicely wry vocals is still very much in place – but there's also some nice shifts in the arrangements, too – deepening things some fuller elements at times, yet stepping back into tighter elements at others. Titles include "Soul's Island", "A House Safe For Tigers", "Our Little Boy Blue", "Sand Hill Anna & The Russian", "Absent Friends", and a nice remake of "The Nights"! CD

Hank JonesStardust – Greatest Hits Of Standards Vol 2 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Pony Canyon (Japan), Late 80s. Used ... $14.99 24.99
A set of standards, but swung in a very inventive way by the Great Jazz Trio – a lineup here that features Hank Jones on piano, Mads Vinding on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! Both Vinding and Hart find a way to make the genius of Hank Jones sound even fresher than ever – not stale at the end of the 80s, but every bit as vibrant as in his earlier years – especially that moment in the 70s when it seemed like Jones was born anew, and able to both draw on the richness of his legacy, while also finding a new sense of expression overseas. This date takes off from that moment brilliantly, but also with a whole new sense of sound and shapes – on titles that include "Stella By Starlight", "I'll Remember April", "Stardust", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Tenderly", and "As Time Goes By". Salena Jones with StuffMy Love (XRCD pressing) ... CD
JVC (Japan), 1981. Used ... $29.99
A rare Japanese-only session – one that has vocalist Salena Jones joining the fusion supergroup Stuff – in a set that's easily one of the most soulful outings from both artists involved! Although Jones mostly worked overseas, she's got a slinky style here that really fits the groove of the American group – a slow-stepping approach that wraps nicely around keyboards from Richard Tee, and twin guitars from Eric Gale and Cornell Dupree. Steve Gadd's drums keep a nice undercurrent of funk, even when things are mellow – and Tee's arrangements are tight, but never slick or overdone. Titles include "Loving Arms", "My Love", "Everyday", "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", and "Lately". CD
(2003 XRCD24 pressing – in great shape with obi! Disc has a sample stamp and barcode has a small Japanese promo sticker.)

✨✧ Charles MingusMingus In Europe Volume 2 ... CD
Enja, 1964. Used ... $6.99
Great recordings the important 1964 tour of Europe by bassist Charles Mingus – a key musical moment that not only saw some of the last recordings of Eric Dolphy before his departure from this planet, but which also introduced the overseas scene to some key up-and-coming talents who were in Mingus' tenure! The group here is a quintet, but plays with the fire of some of Charles' bigger ensembles from a few years before – and the setting has some especially open space for great solos from the reedmen – both Dolphy on alto, flute, and bass clarinet – plus Clifford Jordan on tenor. Dannie Richmond plays drums, and Jaki Byard is superb on piano – and titles on this second volume include "Charlemange", "At-Fw-You", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress Then Blue Silk". Archie SheppSplashes – Tribute To Wilbur Little ... CD
L+R Records/Optimism, 1987. Used ... $9.99
An overlooked gem in the career of tenorist Archie Shepp – one of those fantastically soulful European recordings that sometimes get missed, given that Shepp was recording so much and in so many ways overseas during these later years! The style here is a wonderful distillation of the modes he was exploring in his post-Impulse years – a small group rendition of the spiritual ideas of that earlier moment, but refined with more of a focus on Shepp's tremendous tone on tenor – even more maturely expressive here than before, at a level that makes us really love this period more and more as the years go on! The group features Horace Parlan on piano, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Harry Emmery on bass – the last of whom does a wonderful job of filling the space left empty by Wilbur Little, with round tones that echo the soulfulness of Archie's tenor, and really live up to the tribute promised in the title. Tunes include a really wonderful reading of "Steam" – plus "Arrival", "Manhattan", and "Reflexions". CD

✨✧ Archie Shepp & Horace ParlanGoin' Home ... CD
Steeplechase, 1977. Used ... $11.99
Sublime overseas work from these two legendary musicians – both players from different scenes in the US, and who never would have crossed paths back in the day – but who really sparkle here with a sense of brilliance that brings out the best in both artists! There's no other accompaniment at all – just the piano of Horace Parlan alongside the tenor and soprano sax of Archie Shepp – right at that point when Shepp was exploring more conventional structures of jazz, but with all the knowledge he'd learned from the avant scene – which makes for wonderfully soulful ballads here that are unlike anything you might expect. Parlan is great too – stretching out in the very resonant space of the recording – and titles include "Deep River", "Goin Home", "Amazing Grace", "Go Down Moses", and "My Lord What A Morning". CD

✨✧ Miles Davis & John ColtraneFinal Tour – Bootleg Series 6 (4CD set) ... CD
Columbia, 1960. Used 4 CDS ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic presentation of legendary live material from the team of Miles Davis and John Coltrane – taken from the last concert tour the pair ever did together, and presented here with beautifully stunning sound! The European dates in 1960 were all part of a larger Jazz At The Philharmonic tour – which meant that Norman Granz was on hand to do a great job of capturing the material, which is then given extra-special treatment here for the reissue! Some of these sides have been issued on dodgy overseas collections over the years, but this is the first time all this material has been presented together, and so well – a tremendous illustration of the long solo genius of both Davis and Coltrane, with support from Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. All tracks are very long – and the set features 8 tracks from the Paris concert on March 21, 5 tracks from the Copenhagen concert on March 24, and 9 from the Stockholm concert on March 22. There's also an interview with Coltrane, conducted during the tour – and titles include "Round Midnight", "On Green Dolphin Street", "All Of You", "So What", "Fran Dance", "Walkin", "All Blues", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "Oleo". Baystate/BMG (Japan), 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great work from the Kenny Drew trio of the 80s – a lineup that always manages to bring out some deep sounds in their music – in this case, just the right undercurrent of sadness and loss to fit the title well! Drew's piano is beautiful at this point in his career – as fluid as before, but even more filled with feeling and depth – matched perfectly by the sensitive bass work of Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and the drums of Ed Thigpen – who, like Drew, is still constantly evolving in his second home overseas. The tunes are all well-chosen to fit the theme of the title – and tracks include "The Last Romantic", "Django", "Willow Weep For Me", "Elegy", "Tune Down", and "Finale". CD

MPS (Germany), 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great overseas album by Art Farmer – done with a driving Latin-tinged feel and a mellifluous groove that really shows the best side of Art's playing! The set was recorded while Art was living in Vienna, and the group features Jimmy Heath on soulful tenor, soprano sax, and flute, plus some great piano work by Fritz Pauer. Jimmy Woode's in the rhythm section, giving the set the light dancing feel he brought to his best work for MPS – and the album's got a lot of drive, especially on cuts like Heath's "The Gap Sealer" or "Cascavelo", another great original from the session. Other tracks include "The Day After", "Con Fab", and "Cocodrilo". CD

✨✧ Scott Hamilton QuartetSwedish Ballads & More ... CD
Charleston Square, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Swedish ballads, recorded in Denmark – in a setting that makes the album a real standout in the long career of tenorist Scott Hamilton! Hamilton's always been a master of tone and timing – but in his more mature years, he also seems to have loosened up, and almost comes across with a more human, open sort of vibe – one that really comes through here in the company of overseas players Jan Lundgren on piano, Jesper Lundgaard on bass, and Kristian Leth on drums – just the right sort of rhythm trio to let Hamilton make magic with these tunes. A few numbers here are familiar as jazz standards – thanks to postwar reworkings of tracks like "Dear Old Stockholm" and "Stockholm Sweetnin" – and other titles include "You Can't Be In Love With A Dream", "Swing In F", "Min Soldat", and "Blues I Oktover". Overseas excursions from the Charles Lloyd Quartet – a group who were already breaking down plenty of boundaries at home in the US! The lineup is a bit different than some of the other Lloyd sessions of the time, in that Cecil McBee is in the group on bass – adding in some wonderfully spiritual tones to a lineup that features Charles on tenor and flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – playing with those inventive rhythms that made his work a perfect fit for Lloyd's lines on the tenor! ✨✧ Magic SlimHighway Is My Home ... CD
Evidence, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
At the time of this set, Magic Slim called Chicago his home – but the title may well be apt, as the set was recorded overseas in the Barclay Studios in Paris, at a time when Slim was hitting the highway to reach a wide global audience with his music! Despite that displacement, though, there's a very rooted vibe to the whole set – a searingly tight quartet performance that features Slim on guitar and vocals, Alabama Junior on second guitar, Nick Holt on bass, and Fred Below on drums – a rock-solid group who are captured here without any trappings at all – just a core focus on the sorts of sounds that Magic Slim would deliver to an intimate crowd back home. Titles include "I Love You Baby", "Living In My Neighborhood", "Highway Is My Home", "I'm Mad", "Tell Me Baby", "Man Or Mouse", and "Country Girl". CD

JVC (Japan), 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great late live date from Art Pepper – as well-recorded and as strongly played as his best work of the time on Galaxy or Contemporary Records – and done with a similar group as well! The album's no cheapy concert for the overseas crowd – as Art's working here with George Cables on piano, David Williams on bass, and Carl Burnett on drums – all grooving tremendously on these long-flowing tracks that show the best late Pepper modes firmly at work. Echoes of Coltrane come through his horn, as does a bit of Latin as well – but there's also a soaring, soulful quality to most of the tunes that really stands out – thanks in part to Cables, whose piano is always well-placed throughout! Pepper has a wonderfully sharp tone on most numbers – and titles include "Landscape", "Red Car", "Goodbye", "Straight Life", "Road Waltz", "For Freddie", and "Body & Soul". CD

✨✧ Oscar PetersonThis Is Oscar Peterson (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, Late 40s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare pre-Verve material from the great Oscar Peterson – a host of early tracks recorded for RCA in the 50s! If you think that Peterson only emerged fully-formed in the hands of Norman Granz during the 50s, then think again – because this work really shows a young player already hitting tremendous heights – full, fluid, and very commanding – at a level that's kind of a rougher around the edges version of his Verve years – but in a great way! Peterson echoes some of his predecessors a bit – and you can hear a bit more proximity to Erroll Garner or Eddie Heywood in the way he embraces the rhythms with his solos – but the overall presentation is still pure Oscar. Titles include "China Boy", "I Got Rhythm", "My Blue Heaven", "Honeydripper", "Humoresque", and "The Sheik Of Araby". Plus, this amazing CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks from the same time – more than the 8 on the original 10" release – and also material from later RCA albums that issued other singles from the time, including a few that only ever came out overseas. A massive 49 tracks in all – and a very rich look at Oscar Peterson in the pre-Verve years! CD

Impulse/MCA, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A righteous cover, a righteous title, and a righteous little session that features one long song that spans the entire length of the album! "Black Unity" may well be Pharoah Sanders' freest expression on record to date – but it's also still got all the hallmarks of his best moments on Impulse – especially the tighter rhythmic focus that always makes his work so compelling – and which has kept his legacy fresh for generations and generations of new jazz listeners! The group here is wonderfully put together – with Joe Bonner on piano, Carlos Garnett on tenor, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, Cecil McBee and Stanley Clarke on basses, and Norman Connors and Billy Hart on drums – all with plenty of space to stretch out, open up, and really do their thing! In contrast to some of the totally free work coming out of the European scene during the same stretch – especially that by American players overseas – the album's a great reminder that rhythm in jazz is always a key component – as Pharoah finds a way to make things swing, even at unexpected moments! Hed Kandi/Acid Lounge (UK), 2003. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A silly title, but a pretty nice album overall! This 2CD set features a cool selection of downtempo and retro-styled grooves from some of the hipper overseas labels of the past few years. There's a number of cuts on here by artists that we stock and love, but there's even more by artists we haven't – including some pretty cool groups that we were happy to discover. The package was selected by 45 Dip, and not only includes a number of their own tracks, but also has a feel that's pretty much in keeping with their own end of the musical spectrum – laidback, funky, with elements of classic instrumentation. Titles include "Gorgeous George", "Docking", "Something In Space", and "Va Va Voom (Space Lounge mix)" by 45 Dip, plus "Buddha Cowboy" by John Howard, "Mooger Fooger" by Bermuda Triangle, "She's Groovy" by Akasha, "In Spring" by Les Hommes, "Bubble Love" by Chunking, "Sea Of Change" by Broadway Project, "Angel" by Zohar, "One Day Trip In An Elevator" by Hand Polished, "Love Is Incredible" by Bastian, and "Party" by Sporto Kantes. 29 tracks in all! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great – and the quartet features Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – the latter of whom is almost completely freed up from rhythm at some points. Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

Elektra, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
An archetypal album from the legendary Paul Butterfield – and a set that would shape the sound of countless blues rock records to come! Despite what you might think of the genre or its many later incarnations, there's a raw power here that's really amazing – the young Butterfield and his Chicago comperes, hanging out at clubs on the south side, drinking in the relatively new electric sound of the city, and turning out a groove that's a lot more hard-edged than some of the overseas imitators at the time! Paul's pretty darn great on vocals and harmonica – but the group has some even more powerful sounds in the twin guitar talents of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop – the former on slide, the latter on rhythm – along with Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Mark Naftalin on some Hammond too. Titles include "Blues With A Feeling", "Born In Chicago", "Shake Your Money Maker", "Mystery Train", "Screamin", "Last Night", and "Look Over Yonders Wall". CD

The group here is nice and tight – with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all grooving in a style that's sharply focused, and which really sets the stage for Dex's wonderful tone on the solos. Pedersen's bass is great too – sometimes stepping out with a presence not usually heard on a set like this – and titles include the Gordon originals "The Apartment", "Antabus", and "Candlelight Lady" – plus "Wee Dot" and "Old Folks". The album's a perfect link between Gordon's earlier American work and his long string of European sessions to come – and titles include a great take of "Scrapple from the Apple", plus excellent readings of "Stairway to the Stars" and "Night in Tunisia". The format is simple, but the sound is magic – classic Dexter Gordon in a tight Blue Note mode! CD reissue also includes 2 non LP bonus cuts – "Our Love Is Here To Stay" and "Like Someone In Love". This is the newly remastered version, too – with crisp sound and addional notes and photos! CD

Blue Jack Jazz (Netherlands), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Slide Hampton's not on every track here, but his presence really makes the album sparkle – blowing with his usual strong, soulful vibe in the company of two younger tenor players! The album's a live one, recorded in Holland with a Dutch quintet that features the great Cees Slinger on piano, and both Sjoerd Dijkhuizen and Simon Rigter on tenors – blowing in tight formation on all numbers, but sounding their best when Hampton joins the group on 6 of the album's 9 tracks! As with so many Hampton dates overseas, there seems to be a little something extra in the rhythms – a bounce, or a balance between force and lyricism, that really pushes his tunes in a fresh sort of way – skippingly soulful, just as we first came to love in Slide's music so many decades ago. Titles include "Lament", "Griffin", "Invitation", "Sandra", "The Loner", "Sallitwhachawana", and "The Eternal Triangle". CD

The title says it all – as Yusef Lateef works here in that wonderful mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and Eastern stylings that he brought to all of his best early sessions as a leader! Lateef himself is playing tenor, flute, and oboe – which he uses to craft these eerie snakecharmer lines that work perfectly with the modal grooves of the tracks – very unusual rhythms for the time, and a real precursor to some of the world jazz experiments to come from overseas. The rest of the group features pianist Barry Harris, drummer Lex Humphries, and bassist Ernie Farrow, who also plays a strange instrument called a rabat – which further adds to the charm of the record. A fantastic set from vocalist Mark Murphy – easily one of his greatest albums ever! The session was recorded for the MPS label in Germany during the late 60s – at a time when Murphy was recording some excellent work overseas – and the album features backings by a small combo peeled off of the legendary Clark-Boland Big Band, who were also working for MPS at the time! Murphy's vocals get some tremendous backing on the set from a combo that includes Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone and flute, Derek Humble on alto, and Ronnie Scott on tenor – and the grooves are a mix of modal numbers and straight jazz tunes – almost always dancing together in a lovely way that unlocks a side of Murphy's talents that hadn't been recorded this way before. And in fact, the album's gone onto have a huge influence on the current sound of club jazz – and is a key inspiration for the work of Nicola Conte, Koop, Five Corners Quintet, and others! The vocals are perfect, too – with nary a hint of overindulgence, and always a sweet measured groove that works perfectly with the material – and titles include "My Ship", "I Don't Want Nothin", "Hopeless", "Sconsolato", "Why & How", and "Just Give Me Time". ✨✧ VariousCan You Jack? – Chicago Acid & Experimental House 1985 to 1995 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An essential look at the key years of the Chicago house scene – the time when the city's musicians were carving out a whole new space in sound! Although early house first began as an extension of some of the later modes of disco and 80s club, influences from European post-punk and post-disco work soon crept into the mix, and pushed the Chicago artists to work in a darker, edgier sound that was completely unique! The work from this period is filled with stark, spare electronics – not the cheesy kind that showed up often in New York electro records, but intense analogue bits that had a really dark, dystopic space age sort of quality – laid out over harsh beats and bass, and often presented with no additional vocals at all. For the collection, Soul Jazz do a great job of picking out the best of the early acid house scene in Chicago (the key recordings before the term got picked up overseas, and used to make some very dodgy dance music at the end of the 80s) – and then they go on to pull together some of the best strands of the house revival in Chicago in the early 90s, including key work from the Cajual label. 2 CD set features 17 tracks in all – including "This Is Acid" by Maurice, "Do You Want To Percolate" by The Sweat Boyz, "Beyond The Clouds" by Mr Fingers, "Go Wild Rhythm Track" by Virgo, "Acid Crash" by Tyree, "Dum Dum (part 2)" by Fresh, "Acid Bass" by Roy Davis Jr, "Phuture Jacks" by Phuture, "I've Lost Control" by Sleezy D, "Take Me Higher" by Virgo Four, "Acid Over" by Tyree, "Box Energy" by DJ Pierre, "Video Clash" by Lil Louis, "Explorer" by Green Velvet, "Like This" by Two Of A Kind, "Acid Tracks" by Phuture, and "Downfall" by Armando. A classic compilation from the Chicago scene – one that stood as one of the key full-length releases of house music that was bubbling under in the Windy City – important at the time, as most other albums of house music were from overseas labels issuing Chicago recordings! A pair of classic Albert Ayler albums from 1964 – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirits – only the second album ever recorded by Albert Ayler, but a tremendous statement of music that clearly marks the tenorist as one of the most important jazz talents of the 60s! The set was recorded in New York, and only ever got initial exposure overseas – but has grown to become one of the best-remember Ayler albums over the years – thanks in part to a rock-solid lineup of equal visionaries in the group, a lineup that include Sunny Murray on drums, Norman Howard on trumpet, and both Henry Grimes and Earl Henderson on bass – playing together on the title track, which gives the whole thing a really tremendous power. Ayler's clearly the spotlight, though – shining his light with brilliance both in his phrasing of the tenor, and his sense of timing and inherent rhythm – which opens the door to whole new pathways in jazz. Titles include "Spirits", "Prophecy", "Holy Holy", and "Witches & Devils". Next is Ghosts – a seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

Essential work from Nathan Davis – one of our favorite jazz musicians ever! Davis is one of those cats who you'll never find mentioned in the mainstream, but his music has had a profound influence on our groove for many years – an essential soul jazz style that is finally given full due by this wonderful compilation! Nathan's got a very long resume in jazz – but one that's mostly occurred in the underground – time in both the KC and Pittsburgh scenes here in the US, and key years overseas, working in Paris, Germany, and even Eastern Europe – touching both musicians and jazz fans alike in his travels, and continuing to develop a really unique, truly amazing sound. Davis plays both tenor and soprano sax on these recordings – blowing with a style that owes just a bit to Coltrane, but which really takes off strongly on its own groove too – often with modal rhythms in support of his tones, which makes for some really spiritual, exotic moments in his music. The package brings together a wealth of rare recordings by Davis, many of which are not currently available in any form – cuts from albums for MPS, European Polydor, and other overseas labels – and some rare indie cuts from the US too. Both Herbie and Kimiko started out with a straighter jazz sound in their early years – but by the end of the 70s, they'd both picked up plenty of influences from R&B – although Kasai's work was largely unknown to American audiences. This set is one of those rare Japanese-only sessions by Herbie at the time – a few of which have gotten released overseas as the decades have gone on – and Hancock is in his best keyboard groove, and also gets additional help on the keys from Webster Lewis – who no doubt brings a strong soul current to the music too. Other musicians include Bennie Maupin on soprano and tenor sax, Paul Jackson on bass, Ray Obeido on guitar, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – in a groove that's like a tighter take on the sound of The Headhunters. We're especially fond of the tenor work from Ferdinand Povel, a wonderful player who seems to bring a real "something extra" to just about every session he records – definitely the case here, as his sound is perfect next to the trumpet and flugelhorn of Marshall. And pianist Tardo Hammer's also at his best here – bold, focused, and really setting a fire that the rest of the group seems to follow. Other players include John Goldsby on bass and Doug Sides on drums – and titles include Chris Byers arrangements of the tunes "Theme Of No Repeat", "Philly JJ", and "So In Love" – plus the tracks "Doggie Boy", "Ballad For Very Sad & Very Tired Lotus Eaters", "Una Mas", "That's Ear Brother", and "The Scene Is Clean". ✨✧ Mark MurphyWhat A Way To Go ... CD
Muse, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
An unusual album from Mark Murphy – recorded at a time when he was maybe better-respected overseas, and forgotten a bit here on the US market! As part of that, the record features a great groover – the tune "Dingwalls", dedicated to the London club that Giles Peterson and Patrick Forge helped turn into a jazz dance palace on Sunday afternoons in the late 80s, and which is done as sort of a beat/scat sort of number. Other titles include "Saxophone Joe", "Clown In My Window", "Jamaica", "All My Tomorrows", and "I Fall In Love Too Easily". CD

✨✧ Mark Murphy/Clarke Boland Big BandMidnight Mood ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Art PepperUnreleased Art Vol 1 – Complete Abashiri Concert November 22 1981 ... CD
Widows Taste, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Oscar PettifordBlues In My Mind ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
An ultra-hip live set from bassist Oscar Pettiford – recorded in Germany during the late 50s stretch when he'd taken up residency overseas, and was making some great connections on the scene! This set definitely reflects Pettiford's reach at the time – as it's got an excellent group that includes Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Michel Hausser on vibes, Hans Koller on tenor, Roger Guerin on trumpet, and Attila Zoller on guitar – all top-shelf talents of the time who really make the record shine! Tracks have that tightly arranged quality that Pettiford brought to his 50s American recordings – but also have a looser, more open vibe that allows the solos to really stretch out – especially on some of the album's longer numbers. The full concert is presented here for the first time ever – and titles include "Are You Real", "HEC Blues", "Happy Afternoon", "Rue Dauphine", "Blues Around Joe", "Autumn Leaves", and "Minor Meeting". ✨✧ Bud PowellStrictly Confidential ... CD
Black Lion, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual set of recordings from pianist Bud Powell – tracks recorded in his overseas home, solo – a setting that puts the keyboard magic of Powell in a similar sound to that of Art Tatum, who'd recorded in such a way the decade before! At some level, these might be the most compelling recordings that Bud made at the time – as there's an intimacy that's wonderful, and an inherent swing that makes you realize how much Powell was always driving the group – even when he was working with top-shelf drummers and bassists. Plus, the solo mode maybe also opens up a current of humanity past the Bud's skills on the keys – which makes the whole record all that much more powerful. Titles include "Deep Night", "Strictly Confidental", "Wahoo", "Deep Inside", "My Devotion", "Conception", and "Ruby My Dear". CD

✨✧ Hal RussellFinnish/Swiss Tour ... CD
ECM, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
An important late recording in the life of Chicago reedman Hal Russell – performances done overseas with the always-energetic NRG Ensemble, at a time when Hal was finally getting his due after years working in the Windy City underground! The larger group sound better here than on just about any of their local recordings – playing with a hell of a lot of ferocity at times, which seems to drive Russell into more of a frenzy too – way past his sometimes quirky modes, into the hard-blown, free-improvised territory he could hit at his best moments. Hal plays tenor, soprano, trumpet, vibes, and drums – and the group also features Mars Williams on tenor and soprano; Brian Sandstrom on bass, trumpet, and guitar; Kent Kessler on bass; and Steve Hunt on vibes and drums. Titles include "Temporarily", "Raining Violets", "For MC", "Mars Theme", "Hal The Weenie", "Monica's Having A Baby", and "Ten Letters Of Love". CD

✨✧ Mal WaldronCrowd Scene ... CD
Soul Note (Italy), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mal Waldron's working here with some tremendous help on horns – Sonny Fortune on alto sax and Ricky Ford on tenor – both players who really bring a lot to the album! The set features two long tracks – each taking up a side of the record – and both numbers have a rhythmic pulse that reminds us of Waldron's most imaginative overseas recordings of a decade or so before – a vibe that's soulful and spiritual, and which really sets the scene nicely for Fortune and Ford, both of whom almost sparkle more here than on some of their own dates as leaders from the time. The quintet also features powerful work on bass from Reggie Workman, and tight drums from Eddie Moore – and the two long tracks are "Crowd Scene" and "Ying & Yang". CD

Jazzclub/Verve (Germany), 1960s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
They weren't kidding about the title with this one – because the whole set's pretty darn swinging all the way through! But even better than that, the collection's filled with rare work from a variety of different labels in the Universal Music spectrum, especially MPS – including a fair number of tracks recorded overseas at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s – some really great numbers that offer an unusual side of familiar American players. Titles include "La Petite Mambo" by Billy Taylor, "Speak Low" by Tete Montoliu, "Blue Alexander" by Monty Alexander, "Dark Eyes" by Francy Boland, "How Could You Do A Thing Like That To Me" by Eddie Thompson, "I'm All Smiles" by Hampton Hawes, "Daahoud" by Red Gardland, and "The Oregon Grinder" by Hank Jones. Prestige/OJC, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great American set from Dexter Gordon – recorded at a time when most of his bigger records were coming from overseas! The set's got some nice long tracks that really let Gordon open up on tenor – on those well-blown, longform solo modes he was really cracking in the European scene – equally adept here in the company of a group that features Thad Jones on flugelhorn, Hank Jones on piano, and Stanley Clark on drums – on titles that include "Tangerine", "What It Was", and "August Blues". The set also features a version of "Days Of Wine & Roses" – recorded with a group that features Cedar Walton on piano. CD features an alternate of "The Group", recorded with the Walton group and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet! CD

✨✧ Lars GullinBaritone Sax ... CD
Atlantic (UK), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing American release from this legendary baritone saxophonist – one of a few Swedish sessions that Lars issued here in the US at the time! The album's a perfect introduction to Gullin's groundbreaking work – that blend of soul, swing, and modernism that easily made him one of the best talents on his instrument in the postwar years – an overseas player to rival gians like Pepper Adams or Serge Chaloff here in the US! The work is some of Lars' best from the decade – and the tracks feature his modernist baritone in different groupings with top Swedish jazzmen of the time – including Rune Ofwerman on piano, Arne Domnerus on alto, Rolf Blomquist on tenor, Ake Persson on trombone, and George Riedel on bass. The tracks are all longish (most are over 5 minutes), with a strong swing, and introspective solos by Gulling that are some of his strongest of the time – and titles include "Perntz", "Fedja", "All Of Me", and "So What". ✨✧ MekonsEdge Of The World ... CD
Sin/Quarterstick, 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Mekons follow up to Fear & Whiskey, another incredible moment in what might by their best ever period – and most certainly a favorite of ours for the addition of the great Sally Timms to the band! We can't speak for the crowds overseas, but at this point in the Mekons touring career, we'd wager that as many 25 out of every 40 people at their live shows in the US were rock critics with literary ambitions. We mean that as a compliment to both the band and the critics. There's a poetic, boozy passion to the lyrics and the musical craft is a little more straight forward here than the preceding effort, and a maybe a little more formative of the alt country sound they'd come be credited for inspiring. It's their second straight up classic album in a row, with titles including "Hello Cruel World", "Ugly Band", "Big Zombie", The Letter", "Dream Dream Dream", "Slightly South Of The Border", "King Arthur", and "Oblivion". ✨✧ Ben WebsterLive At Stampen Stockholm – 1969 to 1973 ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A posthumous release of live material recorded in Sweden, during a time when tenor genius Ben Webster was doing some of his best work overseas! The tracks here feature Ben in a few different settings – with piano from Teddy Wilson or Lasse Sjosten, bass from Red Mitchell or Sture Nordin, and drums from Ed Thigpen and Frederik Noren. But maybe best of all is the trumpet work on most tracks – played by either Arne Ryskog or Rolf Ericson, both players whose presence really brings a lot – and makes the record a bit different than some of those other "older American soloists with a European rhythm section" dates of the time. Titles include "Indiana", "C Jam Blues", "The Theme", "Satin Doll", "I Got Rhythm", and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore". CD
