Nina SimoneAt The Village Gate ... CD
Colpix/Hallmark (UK), 1961. Used ... $4.99
An album recorded relatively early in the career of singer Nina Simone – but a set that already shows the very unique approach that would make her a legend by the time the 60s moved on! Even the very first tune is a stunner – a haunting reworking of the favorite "Just In Time", but with Nina grunting instead of singing at the start – as the bass comes across with more power than the drums or piano – really shaping the song in moody tones! That sort of inventiveness follows on every other tune – making the familiar numbers sound very unique, and the unusual ones even more striking – as the set list also features numbers by Oscar Brown Jr, Olatunji, and Simone herself. The recording quality is great – intimate, yet lively – and the set's filled with longish readings of some great tunes that include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Brown Baby", "Zungo", "Children Go Where I Send You", and "He Was Too Good To Me". Nina SimoneNina Simone – The Montreux Years ... CD
BMG, Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 19.99
A great addition to the Nina Simone catalog – material recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival on a number of different dates – all very different performances that really show the legendary singer at the top of her game! The setting shifts here from date to date – the package features shows from 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987, and 1990 – with early material that features a full group with Henry Young on guitar and Sam Waymon on organ, plus later sets that feature a trio, a duo with harmonica player Claude Nobs, a solo piano/vocal date, and a final set with guitar, vibes, and keyboards. As with other live performances, Nina is completely stunning – able to completely transform tunes with that legendary vocal style, and augmenting her words with all the right touches on piano. Titles include "Just In Time", "African Mailman", "Me Me Quitte Pas", "Liberian Calypso", "Stars", "Don't Smoke In Bed", "Little Girl Blue (parts 1 & 2)", "Backlash Blues", "See Line Woman", "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", "Four Women", "No Woman No Cry", "Montreux Blues", and "My Baby Just Cares For Me". 2CD set features 29 tracks in all – including the full 14 song performances recorded at Casino Kursaal in 1968! ✨✧ Nina SimoneNina Simone At Town Hall ... CD
Colpix/Hallmark (UK), 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An important early live show for Nina Simone – a move from the world of small nightclubs (as mentioned in the title of her first record), to the classy Town Hall venue – working in front of an audience filled with left-leaning listeners who were the perfect crowd to get the unique bag she was working on at the time! The performance is a great one – mellow, moody, and a bit folksy – with Nina singing and playing piano with power that really rings out in the larger space – really egged on by the enthusiastic response of the audience. Titles include her classic reading of "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", plus "The Other Woman", "Under The Lowest", "Summertime", "You Can Have Him", "Wild Is The Wind", "Return Home", and "Cotton Eyed Joe". Righteous and soulful! The work that Nina Simone did at Philips is among some of her best work ever – and this set features 12 great cuts that aren't always that easy to find on wax. Includes the anthemic feminist classic "Four Women", the slightly-funky "Mississippi Goddam", the moody "Wild Is The Wind", the righteous "Break Down & Let It All Out", and the heavenly version of "I Loves You, Porgy", which just about surpasses all other recorded versions! ✨✧ Nina SimoneFodder On My Wings ... CD
Carrere/Verve, 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked album from the legendary Nina Simone – recorded in Paris in the early 80s, and not circulated as much as some of her records from the 60s and 70s – but every bit as compelling in its own sort of way! Nina's working here with a greater array of global elements than on previous recordings – very much in that way that the French scene was embracing sounds from the Caribbean and African cultures in these post-colonial years, and using them to forge a wealth of wonderful new styles in the studios of Paris. The approach is still jazz-based, but with lots of earthy percussion, including some handled by Nina with her own piano work – a mode that's not foisted on Simone by another producer, but arranged and conceived by the lady herself. Lyrics are in French and English, and titles include "I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive", "They Took My Hand", "Stop", "Liberian Calypso", "Vous Etes SEuls Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous", "Fodder In Her Wings", "Thandewye", "Heaven Belongs To You", and "Le Peuple En Suisse". ✨✧ Nina SimoneSilk & Soul (expanded edition) ... CD
RCA, 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of Nina's first for RCA – a mixture of jazz and soul tunes handled with some classy arrangements by Sammy Lowe, most of which feature nice electric bass work at the bottom by Gene Taylor! Taylor's bass gives the tracks a nice "dip" that's not exactly funky, but does provide a strong kick that keeps things moving along nicely – in a way that points towards the direction Nina would take in the 70s, and which makes this album a fair bit hipper than some of her Philips work! Nina's not as over the top as on other records, but still lays it out quite hiply – and tracks include "Consummation", "Go To Hell", "Love O Love", "It Be's That Way Sometime", "Turn Me On", and "Some Say". CD features bonus tracks "Save Me" and "Why Must Your Love Well Be So Dry". CD

✨✧ Ulysses Owens JrSongs Of Freedom – The Music of Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, & Joni Mitchell ... CD
Resilience, 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

✨✧ LedisiLedisi Sings Nina ... CD
BMG, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
We've loved the music of soul singer Ledisi since her first self-released album back in the 90s – and since that time, she's matured even more as a vocalist – to a point where she can easily take on the music of Nina Simone with all the glory it deserves! This special set features Ledisi singing with accompaniment from the Metropole Orkest and New Orleans Jazz Orchestra – each of whom bring a sense of fullness, but in different ways – as Ledisi stretches out the tunes with the kind of sophistication and richness that Nina might have done – but in a voice that's all her own. The set features guests appearances from Lizz Wright and Alice Smith – but Ledisi hardly needs them at all, as she's very firmly in the lead – on titles that include "Feeling Good", "Wild Is The Wind", "Work Song", "Four Women", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", and "I'm Going Back Home". Maria Bethania25 Anos ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... $13.99
A beautiful tribute to 25 years in Brazilian music by Maria Bethania – and a record that's easily one of her greatest efforts from later years! The album's something of an all-star effort – with guest vocals from Nina Simone, Joao Gilberto, Gal Costa, and others – and tremendous instrumentation from Wagner Tiso, Hermeto Pascoal, Jaime Alem, Sivuca, and Jose Roberto Bertrami – all of whom help to give the record a sense of majesty that matches Bethania's tremendous vocals. There's none of the overwrought "tour de force" quality going on here – and instead, the guests all make relatively restrained contributions – always letting Maria keep center stage, in a way that shows their support simply, and subtly. Titles include "Quase", "Maria/Linda Flor", "Tomara", "Flor De Lr Embora", "Awo/Inhansa", "Palavra/Apesar De Voce", "Tocando Em Frendte", and "Logrador". CD

Alicia Hall MoranHere Today ... CD
Yes, 2017. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
The striking image on the cover is a great indication of what you'll hear within – as singer Alicia Hall Moran opens up and completely reworks music from the American songbook, while also adding in some great compositions of her own! The record features songs you'd normally hear in the voices of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Billie Holiday – but given these very unusual arrangements that use guitar, drums, and light strings – plus some of Alicia's own piano – all to paint a very different version of the world when mixed with Moran's own words and very unusual style. There's a richness here that points the way towards a new spirit of America – one that's there for anyone with the ears to hear it – on titles that include "Round About De Mountain", "We All Just Live In The World", "Two Wings", "Feeling God", "Gold", "God Bless The Child", "Black Wall Street", "Higher", and "Oklahoma Girl". Patty WatersPatty Waters Sings ... CD
ESP/ZYX (Germany), 1966. Used ... $6.99
One of 2 ESP sessions by Patty Waters – one of the most groundbreaking vocalists of the 60s, and a singer with a style that mixed equal parts jazz and folk! In a way, Patty's got a sound that's somewhat like Nina Simone at her best – in that she dominates a tune completely, singing as if she's speaking – and infusing it with a raspily personal mode that goes far deeper than simple interpretation. The difference, of course, is that most of Waters' material is all original, so the themes aren't nearly as restrictive as some of the covers that Simone had to re-interpret – but there's certainly a mode here that explores freedoms within limits, and which should have made Waters a much bigger influence in her generation. All material on the set was recorded during a 1966 tour of the state colleges of New York – with backings by Burton Greene on piano, Steve Tintweiss on bass, and Tom Price on percussion – and titles include "Moon Don't Come Up Tonight", "Why Can't I Come To You", "You Thrill Me", "Sad Am I Glad Am I", and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair". The oft-covered Bob Dylan songbook never sounds so soulful – classic interpretations of Dylan's canon from a great, far reaching roster of black artists – from the the ever-stirring Staple Singers, southern soul heroes Howard Tate and OV Wright, charismatic country soul from Brook Benton, great gender role perspective flipped versions by Nina Simone and Patti LaBelle, a funky tamborine take by Con Funk Shun and much more! VariousMusic From Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service ... CD
Ace (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A wild assortment of music from an equally wild source – a BBC Radio program hosted by Jarvis Cocker, presented on Sunday mornings as a way to relax and reach some sort of deeper spiritual consciousness! The show was never churchy – but maybe an attempt to find a new sort of inner peace during the modern age – with a selection of songs in a really great range, all linked by the dry wit and understated presence of Cocker as an announcer. This set brings together key tracks from the early years of the show – music that spans decades, and runs from jazz vocal numbers, to electronic music nuggets, 70s AOR, underground folk, and a number of more recent tracks that show that Jarvis has continually had his ear on the rock underground around the globe. The blend is incredibly hard to describe in words, but a delight to hear on record – and the whole thing comes with detailed notes on the track selections from Cocker himself. Titles include "Snowed In" by Tim Rose, "Day Glo" by Serafina Steer, "Cold Rain" by Alternative TV, "Won't That Be A Happy Time" by Joseph & Louis Spence, "Old Molly Metcalfe" by Jake Thackery, "Waters Of March" by Art Garfunkel, "It's A Quiet Thing" by Morgana King, "Rock Intro" by Miranda July, "After The Gold Rush" by The King's Singers, "Invasion Muzak" by John Baker, "True Love Will Find You In The End" by Headless Heroes, "Cars" by The Katzenjammers, "Crazy In Love" by Antony & The Johnsons, "Don't Wait Too Long" by Bob Welch, "Baltimore" by Nina Simone, "December" by David Cain/Derek Boswell, "Gynopedie No 3" by Camarata Contemporary Chamber Group, and "The Interrogative Mood" by Jarvis Cocker & David Cunningham. ✨✧ VariousStop & Listen Vol 5 – Masters At Work ... CD
BBE (UK), 2000. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
Excellent stuff – and possibly the best title in this already great series! Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega put together this killer set of tracks, and the groove runs from Latin to house to funk to soul to disco and back again! Sounds like a hodge-podge effort, but the MAW team make it work beautifully, and we're stunned at how we barely notice the transition between songs and moods – just more proof of the deep well of influences that Kenny and Louie are able to blend into a whole new sound and style of dancefloor rhythms. Louie's at the helm on CD one – and tracks include "Melting Pot" by Boris Gardner, "Wishing You Were Here" by Blaze, "Je Ka Jo" by Joe Claussel, "Puerto Rico" by Eddie Palmieri, "When You Touch Me" by Taana Gardner, "Troubled Girl" by Karen Ramirez, and "Beau Mot Plage" by Isolee. Kenny's got the heads up on CD two – and that one features great cuts like "Coro Miyare" by Fania All Stars, "Seventh Heaven" by Gwen Guthrie, "Rude Movements" by Sun Palace, "Time Is Running Out" by Doug Carn, "2U 4U" by Slum Village, "Getcho Soul Together (parts 1 & 2)" by Breakestra, "Slowly Surely" by Jill Scott, and "See Line Woman" by Nina Simone. Totally great – and with an approach that leaves us breathless! CD

✨✧ VariousVerve Remixed 3 ... CD
Verve, 1960s/2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The 3rd volume in the Verve Remixed series – a now-legendary approach to older jazz, and one that's set a whole new standard for the remix scene! As with previous volumes, this one takes a dip in the Universal back catalog – working with older tunes from the Verve, Mercury, and Philips labels – and bringing them nicely up to date with a variety of dancefloor touches. The groove here feels a bit more open than some of the previous volumes – not as much in the Starbucks-torchy mode, and handled with an ear for groovier and farther-reaching sounds. There's still plenty of singers on the set, but the overall sound seems to allow the remixers to get a bit of their own voice into the tunes a bit more. 13 tracks in all – and titles include "Little Girl Blue (Postal Service rmx)" by Nina Simone, "Come Dance With Me (Sugardaddy rmx)" by Shirley Horn, "Speak Low (Bent rmx)" by Billie Holiday, "Sing Sing Sing (RSL rmx)" by Anita O'Day, "Yesterdays (Junior Boys rmx)" by Billie Holiday, "Stay Loose (Lyrics Born rmx)" by Jimmy Smith, "Peter Gunn (Max Sedgley rmx)" by Sarah Vaughan, "Gentle Rain (RJD2 rmx)" by Astrud Gilberto, and "Just One Of Those Things (Brazilian Girls rmx)" by Blossom Dearie.
