A double-length set of work from one of the greatest pianists of the 50s – both of his Atlantic albums together on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Lennie Tristano, from 1955 – darkly imaginative work from the great Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as a leader! The record features the incredible track "Turkish Mambo" – which has Tristano overdubbed 3 times in this dark modal way that's totally amazing, and which will hook you into his playing immediately! A number of other tracks feature a quartet with Lee Konitz – always a good match for Tristano – and a few others have a great trio that's completed by Peter Ind and Jeff Morton. Tracks include "Requiem", "East 32nd", "You Go To My Head", and "Line Up". New Tristano is an incredible record by Lennie – one that features him playing solo piano, but in a way that's so inventive, so creative, so pyrotechnic, that Atlantic Records had to include text on the back cover saying "No use is made of multi-tracking, over-dubbing, or tape-speeding." The album's also one of the last (the last?) that Lennie ever cut – and although many other players are kind of faltering in last sessions like this, Lennie's sounding better than ever – ready to take on a realm of new challenges in the 60s. Previously unreleased material by Joe Pass – recorded in New York in 1975, in a spare, stripped-down mode that features only Joe on solo guitar! The style is a bit similar to other work on the Pablo label at the time, but a bit more introspective, given the solo setting – and honestly, we're surprised at how much we like Joe in this mode – as he's got a warm and gentle touch that doesn't always show through in group sessions – and really manages to keep his work on the strings interesting, even in the most subtle moments. A great little live set – not just for the always-great guitar of Kenny Burrell, still sounding wonderful here on his 75th birthday – but also for the big band arrangements of Gerald Wilson, which back Kenny up on half of the album! Wilson's in great form here – stepping along with the full-yet-spacious sound that he first crafted back in the 60s – an approach that set a whole new standard for big band work at the time, and which provides a wonderful surprise here – making the album truly the sort of special event hinted at by the title! Some of the later tracks on the album feature Kenny playing in smaller group modes – a few trio tracks, one with Joey DeFrancesco on organ, one with Hubert Laws on flute – and a pair of septet numbers with Laws, DeFrancesco, and Herman Riley on tenor sax. Genius – pure genius! Bobby Hutcherson's work for Blue Note is some of the most dramatic of any artist to ever record for the label. During his tenure there, he broke in doing some pivotal work in the "new thing" mode with players like Andrew Hill and Joe Henderson, next worked into a soulful groove that helped redefine the face of soul jazz, and then teamed up with Harold Land to form one of the most compelling groups to ever record for the label. A great mid 50s recordings by one of the greatest pairings in popular jazz of the time – the twin-trombone lead work of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, both players who'd come from differing backgrounds, but who created a wonderful new sound together! The interplay between the trombones on thesession is wonderful – a strongly pronounced mini-horn section – yet one that's fluid enough to work at a nice boppish pace, especially when paired with a rhythm section of Dick Katz and Al Harewood. Titles include "Thou Swell", "Gong Rock", "Out Of This World", "Lope City", "Mad About The Boy", "That's How I Feel About You", "Stolen Bass", and "It's All Right With Me". CD

A strong statement from pianist Mulgrew Miller – very much at the top of his form here, and playing with a power and sense of imagination that recalls the older trio work of McCoy Tyner! The trio features Richie Goods on bass and Tony Reedus on drums – both backing Miller with a warm, round tone that only seems to deepen the soulful qualities of his piano work. The set includes a number of fresh titles that are awash in light and lyrical color – and tunes include "Somewhere Else", "Small Portion", "Dreamin", "New Wheels", "Words", and "Summer Me Winter Me". Great live work from Art Pepper – a wonderfully recorded quartet date that includes Ed Kelly on piano, done right around the same time that Pepper began to return to the studio as a leader for Contemporary Records! The tracks are all quite long, with a real focus on Art's tone and solo strength – and the 4 extended tracks are a great showcase of the new sound of Pepper, heard after years away from the studio as a leader. Highlights include a slightly funky version of "What Laurie Likes", one that runs for nearly 20 minutes long – and a fast-riffing version of "Straight Life", running well over 11 minutes, and showing that Art's skill at improvisation had not diminished a bit! Other tracks include "Good Bait" and "Here's That Rainy Day". CD

As Archie Shepp made his first album for Impulse a tribute to Coltrane, Marion Brown made his a tribute to Shepp – a wonderful lineage of avant talent in the 60s, stated boldly here, given Brown's amazing talent on the record! The album's filled with hard, soulful playing that goes out, but never too far – like Shepp in his best sixties moments – and Brown's working with a great lineup of players that includes Grachan Moncur on trombone, Beaver Harris on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano! The tunes include three Marion Brown originals on side one, plus three tracks by Shepp on side two. "Spooks" alone will leave you loving this album for years to come – and other tracks include "West India", "Delicado", "New Blue", and "Fortunato". A brilliant blend of 60s "new thing" playing and 70s underground jazz! CD
