Soaring soul from Carlos Garnett – one of the reedman's key 70s sides for the Muse Records label – work we'd rank right up there with the spiritual best of Gary Bartz or Norman Connors at the time! Like both of those contemporaries, Garnett's really reaching for something new in the post-Coltrane generation – mixing electric and acoustic instrumentation with compelling rhythmic changes – and often letting in a bit of vocals as well. Most of the music here is instrumental – with Garnett on tenor and baritone sax, plus the great Hubert Eaves on keyboards and Reggie Lucas on guitar – but some tracks also feature very nice vocals from Prema, a female singer who takes up the same sort of role you might find Dee Dee Bridgewater doing with Connors, or Jean Carn with husband Doug. The blend is wonderful, and the vocals really help give the musical message some weight when the come into the mix – and titles include "Panama Roots", "Senor Trane", "Samba Serenade", and "Ghetto Jungle". CD

Excellent work from reedman Carlos Garnett – caught here during the great first chapter of his career, when he cut some really unique albums for Muse Records! This set really has Carlos coming into his own – still working at the spiritual jazz level of earlier releases, but also finding a way to complicate the rhythms a bit – bringing in modes that are really fresh and inventive – sometimes slightly funky, but never slick or polished at all – and still with plenty of bite on all the instrumentation! Garnett plays tenor and soprano sax – the latter with an especially sharp tone – and the group also features Terumasa Hino on trumpet, Joe Bonner on keyboards, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums – plus lots of added percussion. There's a great mix of acoustic reed and trumpet lines with the sweet keyboards of Bonner – and titles include "Bolerock", "Uncle Ben & Aunt Jemma", "The New Love", "Memories Of Coltrane", and "Dance of The Virgins". CD

One of the coolest, hippest albums you'll ever hear from drummer Albert Tootie Heath – a set that's so different than his earlier work of the 60s, and which has the same sort of righteous, spiritual energy as the Heath Brothers album on Strata East! Albert's got a wonderfully loose vibe on the drums – and the added percussoin he brings into the mix – and the group here features slight electric currents from Kenny Barron on Fender Rhodes and Ted Dunbar on guitar – plus sublime reed lines from brother Jimmy Heath – who really blows it away on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – again like his best Strata East performance! Brother Percy Heath is on bass – which seems to be electric at points – and Curtis Fuller rounds out the group with some of that hipper, more searching trombone style he was using at the time – and the whole thing's wonderful, much more progressive than some of the other Xanadu Records sessions of the period. Titles include "Dunia", "Sub-Set", "Tafadhali", "Oops", and "A Notion". Features the bonus track "Wazuri Blues" – a piano solo by Kenny Barron. CD

Baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne never got much of a chance to record as a leader – but every time he did, he came up with gold – as on this smoking 70s session with pianist Duke Jordan! At the time of the set, both musicians are working past the period of their initial fame – but still very much at the height of their powers – with Payne blowing baritone with the fluidity and sharpness of most tenorists – and Jordan bringing in lots of those wonderfully-crafted notes full of feeling, as he was using on some of his European sessions of the time. The balance of feeling between the two is really wonderful – definitely in the spirit of their photo on the cover – and remaining members of the group are great, too – with the mighty Sam Jones on bass and Al Foster on drums. Titles include "Jazz Vendor", "Cerupa", "No Problem", "Egg Head", and "I Should Care". CD

Three later live sets from Dizzy Gillespie – all in a single package! Sesjun Radio Shows 1 is great, and if you like Dizzy Gillespie as much as us, you'll know that he kept on getting better and better as the years went on – continuing to evolve as a musician, into territory that's always very different than what he was giving the world a few years before! That's definitely the case here, on two live performances done for Dutch Radio in the late 70s – both of which feature a guitar as the key partner – with Rodney Jones on the first half, Ed Cherry on the second, and bass from Benjamin Brown and drums from the great Mickey Roker. Tracks are long, and open up in this really wonderful way – and the group is joined by percussionist Sheyvonne Wright on the second half, who also sings a bit too. There's a quality here that's much more in the best 70s work on the Muse label than you might expect – and titles include "Barcelona", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Toccata", "The Truth", "Night In Tunisia", "Manha De Carnaval", and Round Midnight". Sesjun Radio Shows 2 is further proof that the genius of Dizzy Gillespie knows no bounds, even in later years – as these two different radio performances feature Diz with very unique saxophonists – both of whom really transform the sound of the group! The first half of the set has Gillespie on trumpet with a young Paquito D'Rivera on soprano and alto sax – a young player really coming into his own here, in an unusual group that also features Canadian guitarist Ed Cherry, bassist Michael Howell, and drummer Ignacio Berroa – on titles that include the funky "Unicorn", plus "All The Things You Are" and "Cripple Crapple Crutch". The second half will be even more surprising to fans of avant jazz – as the legendary Sam Rivers joins the group on tenor and soprano sax – blowing straighter than on his free improv records, but definitely adding an edge! The rest of the group features Cherry and Berroa, with John Lee in on bass for Howell – and titles include "Tanga", "Manteca", and "Birk's Works". Concert Of The Century is a record with a title that's a hell of a claim to make – but it's also a hell of a concert, too – one that features Dizzy Gillespie blowing with an all-star small group lineup – in really stretched-out takes on the tunes, at a level that rivals his best 70s material on the Pablo label! In addition to Gillespie on trumpet, players also include Milt Jackson on vibes, James Moody on tenor and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all working together as seamlessly as you'd expect! Titles include "Darben The Redd Foxx", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Get Happy", "Blues N Boogie", "If I Should Lose You", and "Bass Solo/Manha De Carnaval/Work Song". CD

A selection of earlier Al Green numbers issued originally at the end of the 70s – with new mixing by Willie Mitchell, who'd produced all the original sides. Titles include "Love Ritual", which is a nice groover with some congas in the mix giving the whole thing an earthier thump under the trademark 70s Hi Records sound – and ultimately, upon revisiting this compilation, Mitchell does a pretty great job of filtering Al's wandering muse at this point through the trademark sounds of Memphis and Hi Records! plus "Glory Glory", "Let It Shine", "Keep Me Cryin", "Oh Me Oh My", "I Tried To Tell Myself", and "Smile A Little Bit More". CD

Saxophonist Keni Mori really lives up to the spirit of the title here – given that five of the album's six tracks are Charlie Parker compositions – all played by the group with a nicely updated version of bebop roots! The feel of the record is warmer than an older bop session from the late 40s – thanks in part to the use of guitar by Toshihisa Morita, and Yamaha piano by Yoshiko Naya – both players who still play boppish lines, but with more contemporary colorings – with a sound that's maybe a bit like some of the best bop revival material coming out on Muse Records at the end of the 70s! Mori himself plays both alto and flute – the latter of which makes for a nice change – and titles include "Confirmation", "My Little Suede Shoes", "Moose The Moche", "Exit", and "Donna Lee". CD

Rare Sonny Stitt from a great moment when he was really changing up his game – really long live tracks that stand in nice contrast to some of Sitt's tighter studio work of the early 70s! Here, Sonny's really in the kind of territory that lets his imagination as a soloist shine – blowing alto on tracks that mostly are in the ten minute range, with superb backing from the trio of Kenny Barron on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! Barron is wonderful too – and again, sounds very different in this mode than on his Muse Records from the period – a further testament to the genius of some of these well-recorded sessions from Baltimore's Left Bank jazz society. Titles include "Deuces Wild", "Stella By Starlight", "A Different Blues", "Lover Man", "Star Eyes", and the 19 minute "Baltimore Blues". CD

Malachi Thompson always has a great ear for the saxophonist in his groups – and that's definitely the case here, as the record sparkles as much from the tenor of Carter Jefferson and alto of Joe Ford, as it does from Malachi's trumpet! The three horns rise together wonderfully – Ford plays a bit of soprano, as well – and the session has a vibe that's very different than others recorded at the time – maybe more in the soulful blend of styles you would have found on a 70s session for a label like Muse. The rest of the group features Kirk Brown on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, Nasar Abadey on drums, and Richard Lawrence on congas – and titles include a great reading of the Billy Harper gem "Croquet Ballet", plus "In Walked John", "Lucky Seven", "Drown In My Own Tears", and "Mystic Trumpet Man". Overlooked spiritual jazz genius from Chicago trumpeter Malachi Thompson – a player who was making 70s-styled sessions when most folks had given up on the music! The vibe here is right between Strata East and some of the more righteous 70s sessions on Muse – and the group features superb work from tenorist Carter Jefferson, who's at the level of his Rise Of Atlantis work from back in the day – in a group that also features Albert Dailey on piano, James King on bass, Nasar Abadey on drums, and Randy Abbott on congas. Arnae Burton sings on the track "Back To The One", Leon Thomas guests on "No More Hard Times" – and other instrumental tracks include "A Rising Daystar", "Spirit Of Man", "Dhyia Malika", and "I Remember Clifford". CD features the bonus track "Dearly Beloved". CD

The first in a trio of excellent (and numbered!) trio sides that Cedar Walton cut for Red Records in the 80s – and a great start to the whole series! The album's got an open, fluid feel that almost seems ready-made for the CD generation – Walton stretching out in those longer takes that soon became the norm in the later years of his life – working here with David Williams on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, and getting plenty of space to muse openly on the keys of the piano. The instrument used for the record seems to be a big "grander" than usual for Walton – as the tones ring out and resonate strongly, furthering the flow of the music – on cuts that include "Lover Man", "Holy Land", "Voices Deep Within Me", "My Ship", and "Every Time We Say Goodbye". CD

Over the course of his many years in music, bassist Buster Williams has only cut a relatively small amount of records as a leader – yet that fact definitely seems to make each one a real delight! That's certainly the case here – as Williams works with a very cool group who really open up in ways that echo the subtle spiritual legacy of the leader – a core combo that features superb work on vibes from Stefon Harris, tenor and flute from Bruce Williams, piano from George Colligan, and drums from Lenny White – all stretching out on long tracks that include some great originals by the leader. Jean Baylor joins the group on vocals on some numbers – giving the whole thing that extra-hip vibe that reminds us of a time when players of Williams generation would make records that followed their own muse, not the market place or the demands of a label – a bit like some of our favorite loosely-structured sessions from years back on Muse. Titles include "The Wisdom Of Silence", "Stairways", "Here's To Life", "Tayamisha", "In The Middle Of A Rainbow", and a great take on "Estate". CD

Spiritual sounds from the source – a host of incredible tracks from a time when jazz was really opening up into new dimensions – as players stepped forward in a wave of strong post-Coltrane energy to really push the music into the skies! The music here can be seen as a blueprint for generations to come – styles that are now getting new fame in the hands of Kamasi Washington and some of his contemporaries, but which flowered first in recordings like these – pulled from the early 70s vaults of Prestige, Milestone, and Muse Records – and brought together here in a really wonderful collection! A beautiful album of solo bass from Takumi Awaya – a set recorded live in the atelier of the Taro Okamoto Museum, and which has this wonderful way of mixing the spontaneity of the performance with the richness of the instrument in Awaya's hands! The set features a few remakes of jazz classics to set the tone – showing Takumi's sense of creative imagination in a very open space – then the record moves into some original material that's even more breathtaking – as it balances a command of the instrument with a really painterly sense of sound – almost always with an inherent sense of swing that definitely keeps things moving. Even the one free improvisation on the record has a surprising groove – and titles include "Round Midnight", "Breeze Suite", "Minor Chase", "Blues 4G", "Bohemia After Dark", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

A fantastic package that finally gives these recordings their proper due – one that takes the cuts that were issued on the albums Iron Man and Conversations (plus a million cheapo packages over the years) – and restores them to their original mono, right from the tapes – then adds in 85 more minutes of never issued material! The tracks here are a perfect balance of Dolphy in his final year – with some spiritual jazz currents, but still a strong sense of swing – with a fantastic lineup that includes Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, Clifford Jordan on soprano, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and both JC Moses and Charles Moffett on drums – almost a who's-who of people who would go onto shape the face of jazz in years to come. Kahil El'Zabar reinvigorated his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble a few years back, and the results have been a really stunning reworking of his legacy on the Chicago scene in the 80s – especially on the great run of albums on the Spiritmuse label! All the rhythmic, hypnotic qualities of Kahil's past music informs these sounds – but there's also maybe more majesty and more spiritual power overall – as El'Zabar's work on a variety of percussion instruments is matched with bold baritone work from Alex Harding, and tremendous trumpet from Corey Wilkes! Kahil's vocals are also fantastic – an element that he never used this strongly in the past, and which open up a lost possible career as a soul singer from the more righteous side of the spectrum. The set also features work from James Sanders on violin and viola, and Ishmael Ali on cello – both musicians who add to the majesty of the music – on titles that include "Burundi", "All Blues", "Can You Find A Place", "Great Black Music", "Open Me", "Kari", "Return Of The Lost Tribe", and "Passion Dance". One jazz legend pays tribute to another – as percussionist Kahil El Zabar leads his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble through a set of tracks that really take on the wide-spanning legacy of the great Don Cherry – from his early years with Ornette Coleman, to his European world jazz experiments, to his enduring sonic creations over the years! Kahil is every bit as much of a musical experimentalist as Cherry – and his leadership here is perfect – pulling together contributions from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, David Ornette Cherry on piano, Alex Harding on baritone, and Dwight Trible on voice – all players who also pick up percussion and other instruments, in the best Cherry tradition. Kahil handles a wide array of percussion, including balafon and kalimba – and also adds some of his great vocalizations to the proceedings – in a set of tracks that includes "Degi Degi", "Sketches Of A Love Supreme", "Lonely Woman", "Harvest Time", "Spirit Gatherer", "Holy Man", and "Evocation". CD

Extremely heady work from the French scene of the early 70s – and hardly the Latin Rock album you might guess from the title! Ergo Sum have a sound that's as contemplative as their name – a slow-building, almost brooding blend of jamming, jazzy work on flute, Fender Rhodes, organ, guitar, violin, bass, and drums – all topped by the distinctive vocals of Lionel Ledissez, who's got a raspy, rough-edged appeal that almost sounds like Cat Stevens gone to seed! The lyrics are all in English, which adds to the appeal of the record – and the flute and keyboard parts are handled by Jean Guerin. Titles include "Night Road", "John's Nightmare", "Faces", "Second Rebirth", and "Albdion Impressions". As with all Lion reissues, the production is wonderful – lots of notes and photos on the music, plus bonus tracks that include "Mexico (inst)", "It's Me", "Tijuana", and "All's So Comic". CD

A lost funky treasure – never issued before! For those not in the know, The Pazant Brothers (Ed & Al) were a duo of funky hornmen that first came to fame working with Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers – and then moved onto cut some great funky records of their own in the 70s. The pair formed a very tight group that had a killer funky sound – one that we'd easily rank right up there with the JBs and The Meters for hard, raw, power – but sadly, they only ever recorded one full album and a handful of singles – which is why this previously unissued concert is even more of an important treat! We have no idea what the folks at MOMA were thinking when they invited the Pazants down to get their groove in gear – but whatever the case, this CD is totally great! Forget the silly cover – which is way too cold and modern to get at the heart of the grooves – and forget the location too, because the tracks on the set sound like they were cut at some smoky club in Harlem, not in the colder midtown setting of MOMA. The whole thing's totally great – a massive batch of instrumental funk that leaves us to wonder why the heck this thing was never issued at the time. Titles include "Groovin", "Skunk Juice", "P Soul", "Fly Vines", "Work Song", "Momma Momma", "We Got More Soul", "Clabber Biscuits", and "Greasy Greens". Totally great! CD

Vocalist Amy Sheffer works with an all-star cast here – a very cool quartet that includes Billy Bang on violin, William Parker on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums! Bang is especially great, and his work on violin often recalls the spirit of the 80s work that really made us fall in love with his music – a great companion to the offbeat vocalizations of Sheffer, who certainly channels some of the more groundbreaking vocal jazz modes that emerged from the 70s scene onwards. The tracks were recorded in 2001, and some just feature Sheffer's voice with drums – on titles that include "You Rise", "Words From TS", "Drone Bone", "Improv", "Museeum", "Hovering", and "Bleddidit". Wonderful sounds from the films of Jacques Tati – a set that overflows with the kind of warmly wistful tunes that really help define the images on the screen! Music is by Francis Lemarque, Francois Rauber, Charles Dumont, and others – and overall, the music is mostly in a small combo mode – with instrumentation that includes piano, vibes, guitar, and accordion – used in very whimsical ways throughout, with a quality that's almost as visual as the images on the screen – almost little cartoons in music, but with that warmer, more sentimental quality that made Tati's films so much more than slapstick. The collection runs much further in time than previous Tati collections – material from films that include Traffic, Play Time, Jour De Fete, Mon Oncle, Parade, and Les Vacances De Monseuir Hulot. Really beautiful sounds from bassist David Wertman – an unsung hero of the late 70s spiritual jazz scene around New England, and one who delivers this gem in close partnership with singer Lynne Meryl! Meryl's got this warm, fluid style that's a lot like the way that some of the better Bay Area groups were using jazz vocals a few years before – a mode inspired by overseas singers like Flora Purim or Urzula Dudziak, but used here alongside soulful instrumentation that draws a lot from the more inside currents of the loft jazz scene! Wertman's bass is at the core, and tremendous throughout – full of fire and force, and sometimes matched with a bit of percussion – a musical force that's handled here more fully by Tony Vacca, who employs a range of instruments – next to piano and prepared piano from Tom McClung, and these strong trombone solos from Tim Atherton – a player who really sends the whole thing over the top with his contributions! Most tracks have a great modal groove – and titles include "Forest Dance", "Camel", "Flute Song", "New Earth", "Sing My Love Song", and "Dance Of The Mideast Madness". This expanded edition brings in more rare cuts from other releases – eight bonus tracks that include "How Come", "Up In The Sky", "Sci Fi Fantasy", "Blessing Of Love", "Golden Light", and "You Are My Love". A much-needed look at the really magical world of music in France – a scene that's always seemed to exist in its own sort of space, especially during the late 70s/early 80s years when most of these tracks were recorded! The French scene had some famous free jazz at the start of the 70s, but there was also another strain of unique sounds that were beyond categorization or comparison – music that took some of the creative inspiration of jazz and turned it towards global sources, acoustic instruments, analogue electronics, and even French vocal styles – creating work that was not only years ahead of its time, but which also was often missed on the global market, because it was so hard to label and categorize! This set brings together some of the best of those moments – music that's maybe a great second step if you've already dug sounds on labels like Saravah or Futura/Marge – and the whole package is wonderful throughout – filled with titles that even we might have missed otherwise.
