A bit late to be classic calypso, but a really stunning example of the style – recorded by Mighty Sparrow
for Warner with some very hip production by Van Dyke Parks! The record's not only one of the best-produced that Sparrow
also cut, it's also a great illustration of the different styles that were brewing up in Van Dyke's music of the time as well – that cool tropical vibe that shows up in Discover America and some other albums – presented here with a bit more authenticity. Sparrow
's lyrics are as sharp as ever, and the backings are great too – nice and tight, with arrangements by Earl Rodney, and orchestrations from Asquith Clarke. Titles include "Sparrow
Dead", "Hello People", "Mr Walker", "More Cock", "Jane", "Maria", "Who She Go Cry For", and "English Diplomacy".
