Maynard FergusonBoy With Lots Of Brass (profile cover) ... LP
EmArcy/Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... $6.99
There's definitely lots of brass here – as you might guess from the title – but never so much so that it gets in the way of individual soloing by Maynard Ferguson! The date features Maynard working with arrangements by Willie Maiden, Al Cohn, Ernie Wilkins, and Bill Holman – all for a largeish group that's wonderfully hip – Bobby Timmons on piano, Anthony Ortega on alto, Jimmy Ford on alto and tenor, Willie Maiden on tenor, Tate Houston on baritone, Richard Evans on bass, and Larry Bunker on drums – plus some added trumpets and trombones! Maynard himself plays both instruments on the date, and the album also feature some surprising guest vocals by Irene Kral on 4 tracks – spicing up the instrumental blend with lyrics on "Moonlight In Vermont", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Imagination", and "The Song Is You". Instrumental tracks include "Jeepers Creepers", "I Never Knew", "A Foggy Day", "Love Me Or Leave Me", and "The Lamp Is Low". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label drummer logo pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a bit of peeling along the bottom.)

Maynard FergusonMessage From Birdland ... LP
Roulette, 1959. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Put aside your reservations about Maynard Ferguson, because this is a very hip little record – one of Maynard's excellent early sessions for Roulette Records, and like the rest, done with a group that's overflowing with top-shelf players! Ferguson's definitely got a great ear for putting together an ensemble – because players here include Don Ellis on trumpet, Slide Hampton and Don Sebesky on trombones, and Joe Zawinul on piano – all working strongly alongside some lesser-known talents who are equally great! And although the group is large, there's a definite modern edge to the set – strong writing, unusual timings, and some sharp-edged solos that really make some of the longer tracks bristle. Titles include versions of Benny Golson's "Starfire" and "Night Life", Marty Paich's "Lonely Time", and Slide Hampton's "The Mark Of Jazz" – plus "Oleo" and "Back In The Satellite Again", the latter of which was written by Willie Maiden, one of the tenor players on the date. LP, Vinyl record album
(Color bar label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, some aging, and splitting in the bottom seam.)

✨✧ Maynard FergusonCarnival ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool cooker from Maynard Ferguson – and a set that has all the upbeat tones you'd expect from the title, but lots of funky currents underneath! The set really sparkles right from the start – and has that sweet vibe that Maynard was really getting perfect on these late 70s records for Columbia – jazzy fusion that's tight, but never too uptight – with lots of room for sweet solos from the leader himself, plus Bill Hannon on moog, John Qdini on guitar, Eric Traub on tenor, and Mike Migliore on alto. Titles include a famous working of Earth Wind & Fier's "Fantasy" – plus "Battlestar Galactica", "MF Carnival", "Baker Street", "Birdland", "How Ya Doin Baby", and "Stella By Starlight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small trace of a price sticker.)

✨✧ Maynard FergusonMaynard '64 ... LP
Roulette, 1964. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Maynard swings it surprisingly nicely – in his standard big band mode, but with a lot more of an edge than in later years, thanks no doubt to some of the strong players he had in his group! Maynard's solos still have that blaring quality that marks him as a dominant showman, but he also gives ample room to some of the other soloists, especially on the longer tracks. Titles include "Rock Me To Sleep", "Animated Suspension", "He Can't Swing", "Vignette", "For The Cats", and "New Bag Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Maynard FergusonSi! Si! MF ... LP
Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very hiply swinging work from Maynard Ferguson – not as Latin-based as you might think from the title, but great nonetheless! The record features an excellent group that includes Don Rader on trumpet, Lanny Morgan on alto, Rufus Jones on drums, and Don Menza on tenor – all tightly wrapped around Maynard's baton, grooving with a style that's at once impeccably unified, but also very able to make room for the well-blown solo. Titles include "Morgan's Organ", "Si Si MF", "What'll I Do", "Early Hours", "Morgan Point", and "Straight Out". A real groover! LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange and pink label pressing. Cover has light surface wear and a small divot on the opening.)

✨✧ Maynard FergusonConquistador ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maynard come back! All is forgiven! We take back all the things we've ever said about you after hearing this album! The record's a jazz funk masterpiece, and it's proof that you've always had a good head on your shoulders, and were waiting for a record like this to really come into your own! The arrangements shine with a smooth electric sparkle that reminds us of the best albums on Kudu or CTI – and even your normally "too hot" solos fit in perfectly with the band's smooth funky grooving. Our favorite tune is the spacey sample cut "Mister Mellow", but the whole album's pretty darn nice, including "Soar Like An Eagle", "The Fly", "Conquistador". Heck, we even like your funky version of "Theme From Star Trek"! Sorry we ever doubted you! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maynard FergusonMF Horn 3 ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Funky funky Maynard – and a sweet set of electric big band jazz that's got plenty of nice moments! The album features a core rhythm group that really goes to town – jamming in sort of a Clarke-Boland sort of way, with lots of propulsive changes that create a full-on and often funky groove – as Maynard and other horns blow like mad over the top, sending the album into screaming, soaring grooves that almost never let up. The record was Maynard's first US effort in a long time – and was produced by Teo Macero with a very electric-conscious sound that further enforced the hipness of the music! Titles include "Pochahontas", "Awright Awright", "Nice N Juicy", "SOMF", and "Mother Fingers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stan KentonNew Concepts Of Artistry In Rhythm (10 inch LP) ... LP
Capitol, 1952. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Beautiful modernist work from Kenton – one of the first albums to cull his genius together as a whole, filled with the kind of tracks that perfectly sum up his unique approach at the time! If you've ever wondered what makes Kenton so great, this is the album to begin with – as it's filled with fantastic original tunes that provide a shimmering solo showcase for work of players like Lee Konitz, Frank Rosolino, and Bill Holman. Titles include "23 N - 82 W", "Young Blood", "Improvisation", and the haunting "Invention For Guitar And Trumpet", which features Sal Salvador and a young Maynard Ferguson. LP, Vinyl record album
(Back cover has light surface wear.)

Howard Rumsey's Light House All-StarsSunday Jazz A La Lighthouse Vol 1 ... LP
Contemporary, 1953. Good ... $3.99
One of the earliest sets issued under the name of the Lighthouse All-Stars – that hip assemblage of west coast players headed by bassist Howard Rumsey – hardly a household name on his own, but well-remembered for all the great work done at this famous club! The lineup is a who's who of key players on the west coast at the time – Shorty Rogers and Maynard Ferguson on trumpet, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenor, Hampton Hawes on piano, Milt Bernhart on trombone, and Shelly Manne on drums – and some tracks are a bit longer than usual, offering up freer solo space than you're likely to get on other west coast dates – a key contribution of the All-Stars recording mode. Titles include "Creme De Menthe", "Four Others", "La Sonicalli", "Morgan Davis", "Bernie's Tune", "Viva Zapata", and "All The Things You Are". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original yellow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear. Vinyl has a number of deep marks.)

EmArcy, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A rare Emarcy session as a leader from this tremendous tenorist – with some tracks that have Ben Webster in a small group with John Kirby on bass, Benny Carter on alto, and Maynard Ferguson on trumpet – and three more with larger arrangements from Johnny Richards! LP, Vinyl record album
(Great drummer logo Emarcy pressing, with deep groove! Cover has some light aging around the edges – but this is a really fantastic copy overall!)

✨✧ Bill WatrousBill Watrous ... LP
Columbia, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked bit of 70s big band jamming cut for Columbia by trombonist Bill Watrous, done in a mode that's partially like the funky Maynard Ferguson records for the label at the time, but which also has some of the hipper and more expansive approaches that you'd get on some of Woody Herman's best from the period, or (even better) some of the MPS big band classics of the time! LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Jazz Odyssey pressing.)

✨✧ Herb AlpertBlow Your Own Horn ... LP
A&M, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great one from the later Herb – one of those sets that has him turning his strong talent for a trumpet solo in the direction of soulful fusion and R&B-inflected jazz – maybe taking a page from the book of Chuck Mangione or Maynard Ferguson in the process, but definitely giving things his own sort of spin! The arrangements are nicely tasteful – electric, but never clunkily so, especially for the time – and Alpert's trumpet really does a great job of warming things up. Titles include "Latin Lady", "Garden Party", "Paradise Cove", "Gently", "True Confessions", "The Midnight Tango", and "Sundown". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Georgie AuldGeorgie Auld In The Land Of HI-FI ... LP
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real cooker from Georgie Auld's years on Mercury – a record that comes across with some "hi fi" dynamics, but which also features a strongly swinging group overall! Auld's playing here with Frank Rosolino, Ray Linn, and Maynard Ferguson – and the mode's a bit like some of Ferguson's albums for Mercury in the same stretch – shorter tracks but with strongly voiced solos, especially on Auld's saxophone – which hangs nicely here between two eras of jazz in its phrasing. Titles include "In The Land Of Hi Fi", "Dinah", "Tippin In", "I May Be Wrong", "Swingin In The Moore Park", and "For You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Clark Terry, & OthersJam Session ... LP
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a jam session record from Emarcy Records – a set that almost seems as if they jazz label were trying to beat Verve Records at their own game! The style here is a bit more unusual than some Verve dates, though – maybe even more in the spontaneous spirit of a real jam session – with a lineup of all-stars that includes Clifford Brown, Clark Terry, and Maynard Ferguson on trumpets – plus Herb Geller on alto, Harold Land on tenor, Max Roach on drums, and either Richie Powell or Junior Mance on piano! There's a definite tie here to the Brown/Roach recordings for Emarcy – augmented by the presence of Powell and Land – but the others clearly change things up, and Dinah Washington even makes a vocal appearance on one track too. Titles include "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Darn That Dream", "Move", and a medley of "My Funny Valentine/Don't Worry Bout Me/Bess You Is My Woman/It Might As Well Be Spring". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bud ShankBud Shank & Three Trombones (10 inch LP) ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1954. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really great album from reedman Bud Shank – a set that's a bit different than some of his others, with a bit more bite – thanks to trombone work from Bob Eneveldsen, Maynard Ferguson, and Stu Williamson – all playing the valve version of the instrument! Bob Cooper did the arrangements, and the sound's got that nice measured feel of his – with nice space for Shank to cut around on the solos on alto throughout! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stan KentonKenton In Hi-Fi ... LP
Capitol, 1956. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Easily the most successful album that Stan Kenton ever recorded – a brilliant reworking of older Kenton band standards, done with the dynamics of the 50s hi fi scene! The album's a much-needed one to any fan of Stan's genius – as the tunes are presented here in recordings that really sparkle a lot more than their original 40s readings – recordings that not only benefit from the better fidelity of the time, but also from Kenton's finer-tuning on the arrangements, in a way that pushes his original vision even more strongly than before. Players include Lennie Niehaus, Maynard Ferguson, Pete Candoli, Jack Nimitz, Vido Musso, and Bill Perkins – and titles include "Artistry Jumps", "Interlude", "Minor Riff", "Painted Rhythm", "Southern Scandal", and "Eager Beaver". LP, Vinyl record album
