✨✧ Lonnie Liston SmithDreams Of Tomorrow ... LP
Doctor Jazz, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Smooth jazzy soul from Lonnie's mid 80s years, recorded when Lonnie was heavily under the sway of Guru Sri Chinmoy! If you've ever heard Chinmoy as a musician, you know that he's not very good – and fortunately, Lonnie keeps him away from the instruments on the record, and only lets him provide spiritual guidance. The style of the sets is surprisingly nice – a smooth extension of Lonnie's work for Columbia, with vocals by Donald Smith, bass by Marcus Miller, sax by David Hubbard, and work by other musicians who are very much in keeping with Lonnie's style. Titles include "A Garden Of Peace", "Divine Light", "The Love I See In Your Eyes" and "Dreams Of Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a mark that clicks on "Never Too Late".)

✨✧ SOS BandSOS ... LP
Tabu, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The seminal first album from the SOS Band – a record that really showcases the new sound of soul for the 80s, yet still holds onto all the best elements of the previous decade too! These guys have a great ear for groovers – well-demonstrated by the play they got on the dancefloor – yet they've also got a deeper sense of soul than some of their club contemporaries as well – heard not just on the ensemble vocals for the upbeat tracks, but especially on some of the album's great mellow steppers too! It's these laidback cuts that have always kept the album strong for us – showing that SOS are way more than just another fast funk band, and can really go deep, and stay with it for the long haul. Fred Wesley helped a bit on the arrangements – and titles include "Take Your Time", "Love Won't Wait For Love", "SOS (Dit Dit Dit Dash Dash Dash Dit Dit Dit)", "Take Love Where You Find It", and "Open Letter". ✨✧ Spiders WebbI Don't Know What's On Your Mind ... LP
Fantasy, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A real treasure from the Cali scene of the 70s – the one and only album from drummer Spider Webb – and a wicked batch of bass-heavy grooves throughout! Spider's drums are definitely great, and his offbeat vocals are completely charming, too – but the basslines are what really drive the record – often with a slightly skittish quality that seems to hint at the more dynamic dancefloor modes to come on the New York scene of the early 80s – yet still fused nicely here onto a Fantasy Records blend of jazz, funk, and soul! Carol Kaye plays some mighty nice guitar on the record – and titles include the classic groover "I've Learned From My Burns" – plus "Carry Me Through", "Good Thing", "Reggae Bump", "I Don't Know What's On Your Mind", "Soft Wind", and "Spider's Webb". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – a nice copy!)

✨✧ ThundercatIt Is What It Is ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2020. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous album from Thundercat – an artist who just seems to get better and better with every new record, and who's maybe here defining a genre that's completely unto himself! The record is soulful, and has a lot of contemporary cosmic currents – but it's also more far-reaching and fluid than anything that Thundercat's ever given us before – still done with key help from Flying Lotus, but with a majestic, confident quality that seems to have the duo ready to take over the universe! The airy soulful vocals are great, but the rhythms and instrumentation are maybe even more compelling – as there's a number of tunes here that are almost impossible to describe in words, even though they're instantly appealing and wonderfully soulful – a balance that's the sort of special genius from an artist who's ready to write himself into the pop music history books with a key release like this. There's a whole host of guests – including Ty Dolla Sign, Childish Gambino, Louis Cole, Kamasi Washington, Badbadnotgood, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, and many others – but it's clear that the Thundercat/Flying Lotus axis holds all the power – on titles that include "Fair Chance", "Funny Thing", "How Sway", "Miguel's Happy Dance", "Lost In Space/Great Scott/22-26", "Interstellar Love", "Overseas", "Dragonball Durag", "King Of The Hill", and "Existential Dread". ✨✧ Touch Of ClassTouch Of Class ... LP
Roadshow, 1979. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A sweet second set from Touch Of Class – a group who broke big in the indie underground of the 70s with their debut – and who still continue here in a great blend of upbeat rhythms and richer soul styles! Some numbers are clearly aimed at the dancefloor – as on their debut – but these guys can also slide into a mellower number with a laidback harmony vibe – a blend that's rooted in some of the younger east coast group modes of the early 70s, but which is taken here to some slightly more mature territory by the trio. Gerald and Pete Jackson of the group handled the arrangements – in a way that's nice and fresh – and a good change from some of the more "packaged" approaches on other albums of this nature. Titles include "Let Yourself Go", "You Took The Sunshine", "I Need Action", "I Found My Rainbow", and "You've Got My Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tyler The CreatorCall Me If You Get Lost ... LP
Columbia, 2022. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Grammy-winning work from Tyler The Creator – a record that's got a darker, moodier vibe than some of his previous work – very much the journey in sound that you might guess from the title – complete with narration from DJ Drama that does a great job of holding the whole thing together! Along the way, Tyler runs into Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla Sign, and a number of other guests – amidst titles that include "Lumberjack", "WusYaName", "Corso", "Hot Wind Blows", "RunItUp", "Manifesto", "Sweet/I Thought You Wanted To Dance", "Lemonhead", "Juggernaut", "Safari", and "Wilshire". ✨✧ Johnny Guitar WatsonLove Jones ... LP
DJM, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the last great records by Johnny Guitar Watson – and an album that's got some wonderfully subdued moments, which is a real relief after some of the too-funky bits on some of his other sets from the late 70s! Johnny returns to the tight soul of the mid 70s Fantasy LPs – still keeping the guitar up in the mix, but also really focusing on his wonderfully compressed style of vocals – a slightly tripped out mode that dances along beautifully with the guitar – ta-ta-ing us to some great mellow grooves, and really letting Watson's personality shine! Titles include "Love Jones", "Asante Sana", "Lone Ranger", and "Children of the Universe". LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention200 Motels ... LP
United Artists, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
A pretty striking little record in the Frank Zappa catalog – the double-length soundtrack for the movie of the same name, and a set that explodes the Zappa palette of sound even further than some of his previous albums! A number of tracks feature a full studio orchestra – sounding as if they were lined up to perform a conventional Hollywood film score, but somehow tricked into working with Frank when he showed up on the podium to conduct the proceedings! Other tunes echo more of the Mothers Of Invention material, but with shorter selections, and lots of twists and turns along the way – all of which make the whole record this really mad pastiche of songs, sounds, and sonic interplay. Titles include "This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich", "Redneck Eats", "She Painted Her Face", "Janet's Big Dance Number", "Daddy Daddy Daddy", "The Girl's Dream", "A Nun Suit Painted On Some Old Boxes", and "Mystery Roach". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousLatin Dance Party 2 – 1960s Boogaloo ... LP
Atlantic/Warner (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Latin grooves from the 60s and 70s – most from hard-to-find sides cut for Atlantic Records! Like the first volume, this one dips into some excellent material that was only ever briefly issued on LP – and it mixes it with some overlooked Latin cuts on albums by jazz and soul artists from the same time. The groove's got a tight 60s beat to it – with plenty of Latin Soul riffing, and even a bit of funk in the mix. Titles include "His Groove" and "King Kong" by Eddie Cano & Nino Tempo, "Watusi Boogaloo" and "Light & Sweet" by Willie Rosario, "Are You Sure" by Freedom Sounds, "Ghetto Funk" by Ike Turner, "Blood Shot" by Hubert Laws, "Devilette" by Dave Pike, and "Hip Hug Her" by Mongo Santamaria. ✨✧ VariousSupafunkanova Vol 2 – Badass Funk Classics From The Disco Boogie Era Compiled By DJs Joey Negro & Sean P ... LP
Z Records (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic explosion of funk, soul, and club – put together at a level that may well even top the first Supafunkanova collection! As before, the cuts here are all super-rare and obscure – but all kick heavy ass when it comes to tight rhythms and catchy clubby grooves – never straight disco or mainstream boogie – but borrowing plenty from the mainstream to turn out cuts with a really raw, underground vibe! There's a slight touch of hip hop in the mix – more that old school skating mode – and the whole thing definitely shows Joey's decades in cutting great cuts for the dancefloor – and his big love of the best groups from the hinterlands. 2LP set features the titles "Drive Me Insane" by Airplay, "Betcha Got A Dude On The Side" by Star Quality & Class, "Cool Out" by Magnum Force, "Spunk In The Funk" by Blue Denim Band, "Walk" by Sam Culley Band, "Sound Reason (Joey Negro edit)" by Splash, "Making Love Will Keep You Fit" by Brenda Harris, "Let's Get High" by Nice & Tight Band, "Easton Assassin" by Sunburst Band, and "Super Stimulus" by Stimulus. ✨✧ VariousWidow's Joy – Eastern European Immigrant Dances In America 1925 to 1930 ... LP
Sound American/Canary, Late 20s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Pretty amazing music from new immigrants to the US – a range of different sounds from Eastern European cultures, reworked here for recordings on American 78s! The music has echoes of Jewish styles, and bits of early polka – although polka itself as a genre wouldn't emerge until years later, as these various cultures tried to find a common ground in the mainstream. Most of the recordings are relatively rootsy – and feel more like ethnographic sounds captured in the old world – and the LP comes with a really great booklet of notes, with way more detail than usual for Mississippi! 16 tracks in all – with work by Edward Mika, Wladyslaw Polak, Stanislaw Mermel, Orkiestra Majkuta, and others. LP, Vinyl record album
