Great early work from trumpeter Jon Eardley – captured here at a point when he was a budding young modernist in the 50s! The album features 2 early 10" LPs – Jon Eardley in Hollywood and Hey There Jon Eardley – both recorded for Prestige within a few months in the mid 50s. The first date features Eardley's trumpet right out front in the mix – hard, spare, and a bit angular – with backing from the piano of Pete Jolly, as well as Red Mitchell on bass and Larry Bunker on drums. Titles include "Late Leader", "Indian Spring", "Black", and "Gloss". The second session is even more interesting, as it features Eardley's horn in tandem with tenor saxophonist JR Monterose, brimming with new ideas at this point in his career, and adding a real edge to the tracks. The remaining players include George Syran on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Hey There", "Sid's Delight", "Demanton", and "If You Could See Me Now". CD

2 of Woody Shaw's greatest albums – recorded 10 years apart, and forming a fantastic CD collection! Cassandranite features fantastic early work by Woody Shaw – an album originally recorded in 1965, when Shaw was part of a core soul jazz underground that was slowly forming an answer to the "new thing" movement of the mid 60s. The session was self-produced – and not only features some killer playing by Shaw, but contains a number of other wonderful touches. Larry Young plays piano (not organ) on two tracks; Herbie Hancock is on another 3; George Cables plays electric on the last track, which also includes Harold Vick; Joe Henderson plays tenor throughout; and the great Joe Chambers is on drums. The set is filled with fantastic modal originals, all along the lines of Shaw's "Moontrane" composition – and titles include "Baloo Baloo", "Three Muses", "Tetragon", and "Cassandranite". Love Dance is equally great – spiritual, soulful, and filled with some nice modal grooving! The group's one of the best he ever worked with on Muse – with Billy Harper on tenor, plus Rene McLean, Steve Turre, Joe Bonner, and Cecil McBee – and the approach reminds us of some of the work on Strata East from the same time. The highlight of the record is the cut "Sunbath", which was done in a more famous jazz dance version by singer Joyce Hurley – but Shaw's version has a very similar groove. Harper makes many of the other tracks shine brilliantly, and titles include "Love Dance", "Obsequious", and Harper's own beautiful composition "Soulfully I Love You". CD

2 CD set that brings together a huge amount of the best tracks cut by trumpeter Woody Shaw during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The selection is excellent, and the material is culled from Muse records like The Iron Men, Imagination, Solid, and Cassandrite – plus a few Blue Note 60s sessions. There's a number of great cuts that feature Shaw in his youthful edgey period, playing with Herbie Hancock, Larry Young, and Joe Henderson – and there's a lot more that have him laying down mature soulful solos with the likes of Kenny Barron, Kenny Garrett, and Kirk Lightsey. Titles include "Dat Dere", "Spiderman Blues", "Solid", "Obsequious", "Baloo Baloo", "Tetragon", and "Nutville". CD

Nathan Davis is one of our all-time favorite saxophone players – and he sounds tremendous here in the company of trumpeter Woody Shaw, as the pair both take on Shaw's early "Zoltan" composition, with help from Larry Young on piano! The flipside features an even bolder number – the Davis composition "Mister E", with some very fierce work from Young on the piano – a really surprising change from his usual organ work of the time! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Really wonderful live work from the great Horace Silver – some more obscure material that stands as a very nice companion to his Blue Note live album of the mid 60s! The first five tracks on the set features a superb group with Joe Henderson on tenor, and either Carmell Jones or Woody Shaw on trumpet, depending on the tracks – both fantastic players who really bring a sharp edge to the proceedings, and who give the music a slightly different vibe than some of Silver's studio material from the period. Tracks are long, and drums are by Roger Humphries, with bass by Larry Ridley and Teddy Smith – on extended takes of "Que Pasa", "The Natives Are Restless", "Song For My Father", and two versions of "African Queen". The CD has two more tracks recorded at the Cork & Bib club in 1964 – a club out on Long Island – again with Henderson and Shaw, on a 15 minute version of "Tokyo Blues", and a shorter version of "Senor Blues" – both great. A heck of a rare jazz album – and a great one too! This obscure session was cut by pianist Kenny Drew in Hollywood in 1955, with a sharp-edged west coast quartet that includes LA boppers Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Larry Marable on drums, as well as the overlooked Joe Maini on alto – a really great talent who makes the album one of Drew's greatest from the 50s. Maini clocks in one of his best performances ever, matching Drew's firey work on the keys with some tight well-toned solos that pack an incredible punch that reminds us of Sonny Criss – supported strongly by some hard and heavy work from Drew and the rhythm section. Many titles are originals, and tracks include "Talkin-Walkin", "In The Prescribed Manner", "Deadline", "Hidden Channel", and "Walkin-Talkin". Great stuff all-out, and the kind of a record that makes it worth collecting rare jazz! LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic turning point for the great Horace Silver – a set that's still got the soul jazz groove of some of his earlier 60s hits – but which also has the pianist really making magic with some of the younger players on the scene – in a lineup that features the young Woody Shaw on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Tyrone Washington on tenor sax! As with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan at the time, there's an openness to some of Silver's writing and arranging here that's really great – as if he's absorbing some of the qualities of the new thing generation, but never going there himself – and instead just finding a way to color his music with really fresh energy and tones. Larry Ridley is on bass and Roger Humphries is on drums – completing a really fantastic lineup – and titles include the title cut "The Jody Grind" – is an enduring funky jazz classic – plus "Blue Silver", "Mary Lou", "Mexican Hip Dance", "Grease Piece", and "Dimples". The final album from Working Week – a cool British group who mixed up soul and jazz years before Sade – but never got the fame they deserved! The sound here is a bit fuller than on the previous records – maybe more soul touched with jazz than the other way around – although the core of the group still features great woodwinds from Larry Stabbins and guitar from Simon Booth – all fronted by the great vocals of the lovely Juliet Roberts, who really ties the sound together and gives it the special sound that made the group so great. Stabbins and Booth wrote most of the tracks – and titles include "Dancing In Motion", "Friend", "Too Much Time", "Soul Train", "Shot In The Dark", "South Africa", and "Touching Heaven".
