Clarke Boland Big BandHandle With Care ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1962. Used ... $9.99
Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! Tracks include "Long Note Blues", "Speedy Reeds", "Sonor", and "Om Mani Padme Hum". CD

Von FreemanDoin' It Right Now ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1972. Used ... $8.99
A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio that features fellow Chicagoan John Young on piano, plus Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all hanging back nicely to let Freeman dominate the set on tenor. The album's noteworthy for its inclusion of a few original tunes by Von – "White Sand", "Portrait Of John Young", "Doin It Right Now", "Brother George", and "Catnap" – all of which mark a nice contrast from some of the more traditional standards that show up on other Freeman albums of the 70s. Stan GetzCaptain Marvel ... CD
Columbia/Koch, 1972. Used ... $6.99
A wicked album that's one of Stan Getz's best from the 70s! The record features Stan reunited with Chick Corea, whose warm lyricism was the lynchpin in Getz's landmark Sweet Rain – the stunning session from 1968 that is perhaps our favorite-ever Getz album. Corea plays electric piano here, but with none of the indulgence that he was lapsing into at the time. His blocky chords stake out a stark new territory, into which Getz solos beautifully, into a range yet untapped at that time in his career. Tony Williams augments the group on drums, giving the whole thing a sense of freedom, but also a nice tight swing. Tracks include "La Fiesta", "Five Hundred Miles High", "Times Lie", and "Day Waves". Leo WrightSuddenly The Blues ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1962. Used ... $14.99
A record of incredible beauty from the great Leo Wright – and one that we'd never part with at all! Wright's one of those excellent players from the 60s who never really gets his due – largely because he was always hiding behind larger groups, and because he left the US in the decade for an extended stint in Europe. Still he cut some fantastic early work with both Dizzy Gillespie and Lalo Schifrin – and this album captures him right during the peak of that early period! The record features light lively backing from a quartet that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and some tracks have a beautifully groovy sound that's slightly bossa, slightly soul jazz. One of the best of these is Wright's great cover of "A Felicidade", but the record contains many other great moments, like "The Wiggler", "Tali", "Sassy Lady", and "Dionysis". CD

✨✧ Teddy CharlesWord From Bird ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A richly complex album from vibist Teddy Charles – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and certainly one with the boldest sound! The groups here are filled with hip players – all working under Charles' direction in a set of tracks that shimmers with dark sounds and moody colors – often as textural as it is jazz-based – with a level of sophistication that goes beyond even Charles key modernist work from the early 50s. Teddy's on vibes, alongside Art Farmer on trumpet, Eddie Bert on trombone, Hal Stein on alto, Don Butterfield on tuba, George Barrow on baritone, Hall Overton on piano, and Jimmy Raney on guitar – and while some tracks feature a tentet, 4 of the album's numbers feature a smaller quartet with Charles Mingus on bass! Titles include the 10 minute composition "Word From Bird" – plus "Blue Greens", "Laura", "Showtime", and "Just One Of Those Things". CD

✨✧ Von FreemanGreat Divide ... CD
Koch/Premonition, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rich laidback set from one of Chicago's resident legends – tenor Von Freeman! Freeman was in his early 80s by the time this set was recorded, and his warm tone sounds as good to our ears as it did on recordings from decades ago. Von really lets loose in spots, too, such as on the fiery "Never Fear Jazz Is Here". Supporting players Jimmy Cobb (drums), John Webber (bass), and especially pianist Richard Wyands are given plenty of room to shine. Tracks include "Be My Love", "Never Fear Jazz Is Here", "This Is Always", "Chant Time", "Blue Pres", "Disorder At The Border", "Hard Hittin'", "Violets For Your Furs" and more. CD

✨✧ Roland HannaEasy To Love ... CD
Atco/Koch, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Roland Hanna's certainly easy to love here – working in a free-flowing trio mode, with a fair bit more soul jazz touches than on some of his later work! Rhythm here is from Ben Tucker on bass and Roy Barnes on drums – both of whom bring in a gentle little groove that augments the more rhythmic side of Hanna's piano – taking his warmer lyrical flow, and giving it a nice sense of focus, especially on some of the standards on the set. Titles include Tucker's original "Farouk Thelonious", plus "From This Day On", "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Night In Tunisia", "Easy To Love", and "It Never Entered My Mind". CD

Koch/Atlantic, 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic session of cool jazz from the 50s – a majestic meeting of the alto of Lee Konitz and the tenor sax of Warne Marsh! The album's a perfect example of icy modernism at its best – swinging nicely, never too uptight, but with a well-composed approach that really shows the magic of the Konitz approach. The group features the great Billy Bauer on guitar, plus either Ronnie Ball or Sal Mosca on piano – and rhythm is by Kenny Clarke and Oscar Pettiford. Tracks are short, and titles include "Topsy", "Lee", "Donna", "Don't Squawk", and "Ronnie's Line". CD

✨✧ Lee MorganHere's Lee Morgan (2CD – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Vee Jay/Koch, 1960/1997. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent early session from a young Lee Morgan – a set that we'd rank right up there with his best Blue Note material of the time! The set's from a time when Lee's trumpet was a key force in the Jazz Messengers – and there's definitely a Messengers vibe going on here, thanks to drums from Art Blakey – who works in a quintet alongside Clifford Jordan on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass. Jordan's tenor has a nice sharp edge – and like some of the Wayne Shorter sessions for Vee Jay, there's a nice sense of darkness here that's a bit different than some of Morgan's usual moments. Titles include "Terrible T", "Mogie", "Bess", and Wayne Shorter's "Running Brook". 2CD version includes 10 bonus alternate takes! CD

✨✧ Wayne ShorterWayning Moments ... CD
Vee Jay/Koch, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Even at a tender young age, Wayne Shorter could exhibit the kind of sensitivity and creative lyricism that would make him one of the giants of modern jazz. This early set – which features playing by Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Higgins, and Jymie Merritt – is filled with haunting original compositions ("Devil's Island", "Dead End", "Powder Keg") and the kind of mature playing that you'd hardly expect from a little tike like Shorter (who, with Lee Morgan, was just a kid when the two of them were playing with Art Blakey). This excellent CD reissue delivers these early tracks in stunning fidelity, and includes 7 alternate takes of the tracks on the orginal LP! CD

Koch/Atlantic, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Like Capra Black, this set features Harper's sharp and soulful tenor up against a choir of voices – blowing on hard-hitting soul jazz arrangements handled by Max Roach, of the style he used on some of his classic early 60s sides for Impulse and Candid. The tracks are long, Harper's in top form, and the group also includes Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet and George Cables on piano – ultra hip cats, always! Cuts include "Motherless Child", "Let Thy People Go", and "Troubled Waters. CD

Columbia/Koch, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard to have any feet in the gutter when you sound this great – as the album's a killer batch of hardbop, led by drummer Dave Bailey during his classic short run on Columbia! The lineup here is amazing – a rock-solid sextet with Clark Terry on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Horace Parlan on piano, and Peck Morrison on bass – all hitting with an intensity which rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige – but which is arguably even better, given that most of the tracks on the set really stretch out! Side two features an extended 20 minute take on "Sandu" – and side one features "One Foot In The Gutter" and "Well You Needn't" – both over 10 minutes long! CD

✨✧ Andy BeyExperience & Judgment ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly righteous record from the legendary Andy Bey – an artist who's risen back to fame in recent years as a relatively straight jazz singer – but who was in some very heady territory here in the early 70s! Bey first rose to fame as part of the vocal trio, Andy & The Bey Sisters – and while that group's 60s recordings were already wonderful, Andy soon stepping out into tremendous territory of his own – working with Max Roach, Horace Silver, and Gary Bartz – and adding some unique spiritual and socially conscious vocals to some of their best jazz records at the end of the 60s! This set's one of Andy's few solo moments from the time – and really follows up the groove strongly – with lots of help from the mighty William Fischer, who wrote some of the tracks, and plays keyboards – although Bey is clearly the main compositional force here. The album includes a remake of "Celestial Blues", which Bey recorded famously with Gary Bartz – and which is in a leaner, even funkier take here – and other titles include "Being Uptight", "Tune Up", "Hibiscus", "Experience", and "The Power Of My Mind". Koch/Atlantic, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stunning early work from trumpeter Ted Curson – a record that's got as much soul and rock-solid power as you'd guess from the image on the cover! Ted's working here in the company of his frequent partner from the early days – tenorist Bill Barron – and together, they come up with a riveting sound that rivals the genius of early 60s work from Charles Mingus or Booker Ervin – with a similar blend of sharp edges, tight rhythms, and in the pocket soul! The rest of the group features Georges Arvanitas on piano – making a rare American appearance – plus Herb Bushler on bass and Dick Berk on drums. Titles include the classic "Straight Ice", plus "Reava's Waltz", "Elephant Walk", and "Nublu". CD

✨✧ Gil EvansSvengali ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players – as Gil's working with a group of younger soul jazz and spiritual soloists that include Ted Dunbar, Billy Harper, and Hannibal Marvin Peterson – as well as the older soul modernist Richard Williams. But there's also some other specifically Evans-like touches to the record that stand out – like Gil's stark notes on acoustic piano and his lighter work on the electric keys – plus a bit of inventive synthesizer from David Horowitz, who makes a few tracks really crackle with energy. Tracks include "Zee Zee", "Blues In Orbit", "Cry Of Hunger", and "Thoroughbred" – the latter two of which are lovely compositions by Billy Harper! CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardHigh Blues Pressure ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real gem from Freddie Hubbard's 60s years – an all soul jazz outing, cut with a hip array of players that show that young Fred was definitely on the forefront of jazz at the time! Despite the "blues" in the title, the main groove is spiritual soul jazz – in a style that puts Freddie a few years ahead of the Strata East crew, and working here in a mode that he oddly didn't continue into the 70s. The album's got a really righteous sound overall – with long tracks that really stretch out wonderfully with rich feeling and spirit – thanks to work from players who include Weldon Irvine and Kenny Barron on piano, Bennie Maupin and James Spaulding on reeds, and Freddie Waits on drums. The set's filled with great original tunes that include Freddie's "Latina", "True Colors", and "For BP" – as well as a version of Weldon Irvine's "Can't Let Her Go". CD

✨✧ Milt Jackson & Coleman HawkinsBean Bags ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really work nicely with the album's slight Latin inflections – a bit like those you might hear on some of Hawkins' Impulse Records material from the same generation. Milt Jackson's vibes are great too – chromatic and edgey, and set up with rhythm support from Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Titles include "Indian Blues", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Sandra's Blues", "Stuffy", and "Close Your Eyes". CD

Classic early work by Phineas Newborn – and a record cut right after his emergence from the great Memphis scene of the 1950s! Most of the album features trio material – cut with Kenny Clarke on drums and Oscar Pettiford on bass – but a few tracks also feature some very nice guitar work by Newborn's lesser-known brother, Calvin – who helps give the record some slight bluesy undercurrents you won't hear on other albums from Phineas at the time. The style is a mix of bop soloing and that lyrical approach to the keyboard that Newborn was forging along with a few other popular pianists of his generation – and titles include "Dahoud", "Celia", "Barbados", and "Newport Blues". ✨✧ Duke PearsonPrairie Dog ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dark genius from Duke Pearson – quite possibly one of his hippest records ever, and an album that's filled with surprising twists and turns! At one level, the set seems to be a simple batch of soul jazz tunes – in the mode of Pearson's mid-60s classics on Blue Note – but at another, it opens up into unusual phrasings, timings, shades, and tones – all of which are years ahead of their time, and serve to keep the album full of complexity throughout! Many tracks groove here – but in a very subtle way that often moves a bit towards modal jazz. And the players on the set shade things in unconventionally – sometimes using understatement and space as their strongest tools – clearly directed by Pearson's budding talents as an arranger. Players include James Spaulding on flute and alto sax, Harold Vick on soprano sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, and Gene Bertoncini on guitar – and Pearson himself plays a bit of celeste in addition to his regular piano. Titles include a great version of Joe Henderson's "Soulin", plus Ron Carter's "Little Waltz", and Pearson's own "The Fakir", one of the best tracks he ever wrote! Other titles include "Hush A Bye", "Prairie Dog", and "Angel Eyes". CD

One of Don Pullen's best-known albums, and for good reason too – a well-recorded document of a Montreux performance that helped put Don's piano talents in the spotlight for the rest of the 70s! The record's got a sense of freedom that's quite unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – as each side features one long track, played at a level that's very spontaneous, and often quite outside – at least at some points. Side one features an extended version of Muhal Richard Abrams' "Richard's Tune", done with a trio that features electric bass by Jeff Berlin and drums by Steve Jordan – and side two features the even more beautiful Pullen original, "Dialogue Between Malcolm & Betty" – which adds in some great Latin percussion to the trio! Although Howard Tate's work on Verve has gotten a lot of acclaim lately – thanks to an excellent CD reissue – this later album for Atlantic still remains in the ranks of soul obscurities. The album's perhaps not as great as Tate's Verve work – in that the arrangements don't fit as hand-in-glove as those sides – but the quality's still quite high, with arrangements by David Spinozza and Jerry Ragovoy that work quite well with Tate's soulful vocals. ✨✧ John HandyJohn Handy Recorded Live At The Monterey Jazz Festival ... CD
Columbia/Koch, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from saxophonist John Handy – an extended performance from the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1965, and a set that shows that he's grown tremendously as an artist since his early recordings for Roulette! The tracks are quite long – with only 2 numbers overall, "Spanish Lady" and "If Only We Knew" – each of which take up a side of the album. Handy's work on alto sax is incredibly soulful – and the group here includes Jerry Hahn on guitar and Michael White on amplified violin – playing with a sound that is sprawling, spiritual, and a little bit "out" at times – but always filled with that sense of soul that made Handy so wonderful, even during his early years with Charles Mingus! ✨✧ Joe MooneyLush Life ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully moody vocal outing from Joe Mooney – a lesser-remembered singer from the 50s, but one of our favorite talents from that generation! Joe's got a style of singing that's in the more fragile mode of male vocalizing – similar to Matt Dennis, but a bit more boozy overall – with a late nite feel that possibly comes through more perfectly on this record than any of his other albums! Joe plays organ along with his vocals here – usually in a laidback and mellow mode, just floating along eerily, with guitar, bass, and drums giving slight additional support. The songs are all familiar ones, but sung with a really great style that almost makes us feel like Joe's telling us the lyrics of the tunes from a neighboring barstool – and titles include "Nina Never Knew", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "That's All", "The Kid's A Dreamer", "Nowhere", "My One & Only Love", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". ✨✧ John Lewis & Sacha DistelAfternoon In Paris ... CD
Atlantic, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We would gladly trade every other John Lewis album for a copy of this album – because the album's a treasure all the way through – and a really unique set, with a really unique feel! The session features Lewis' piano in the company of a hip French group that includes Sasha Distel on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and the great Barney Wilen on tenor – all great players who bring out a whole new side of Lewis' genius! Wilen's solos alone are worth the price of the album – deeply soulful, with a resonant tone that's some of his greatest on record – and an easy illustration of why he was one of the few European players of the postwar years to get big notice on this side of the Atlantic. But amazingly, Sacha Distel's also great here too – and despite the fact that he later went onto become a vocal pop star, Distel displays a beautiful approach to jazz guitar that makes us wish we had more sessions of his from these days. Titles include "Afternoon In Paris", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "All The Things You Are" – but don't let the titles alone speak for the record, because every track is beautiful! CD

✨✧ Franz Koglmann & Lee KonitzWe Thought About Duke ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling tributes to Duke Ellington we've ever heard – a performance of his music that really deviates from the sound of the original, yet which also keeps all the complicated spirit of Duke intact! Trumpeter Franz Koglmann is really at the helm of the core groups on the set – leading the Monoblue Quartet on some tracks, an ensemble that features Tony Coe on clarinet and tenor, Burkhard Stangl on guitar, and Klaus Koch on bass – and the Pipe Trio on others, with Rudolf Ruschel on trombone and Raoul Herget on tuba. Lee Konitz joins in on alto with both ensembles, save for one track – and the whole record is a brilliant piano-less and drum-less outing that has the horns coming together in ways that are almost inspired by Jimmy Giuffre, but which take on some richer chromatic tones in their exploration of Ellington themes. The whole record really opens up the Ellington concept tremendously – and titles include "Love Is In My Heart", "Lament For Javanette", "Ko Ko", "Zweet Zurzday", "Pyramid", and "The Mooche" – plus a few variations on "Thoughts About Duke", an original by Koglmann. ✨✧ Rolf & Joachim KuhnReunion In Berlin ... CD
Amiga/BE Records (Germany), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from the brothers Rolf and Joachim Kuhn – and exactly the kind of record that will have you completely rethinking your opinion about the clarinet in jazz! Rolf's a player with roots in more traditional modes, but by the time of this mid 60s session he was a very committed modernist – and uses the instrument here in modes that feel a lot more like the soprano sax spirit of John Coltrane or Steve Lacy at the time – open, free, unbridled – and often set to a modal groove that bubbles up perfectly from Joachim's work on piano! Sometimes Joachim's a bit too out for us, but he hangs nicely on the inside here – not entirely straight, but always working with a sense of rhythmic progression, which gets support from Klaus Koch on bass and Reinhard Schwartz on drums. Yet Rolf's the real star of the show – as he blows with a fantastic range of sounds and phrasing – searing at some points, soulful at others – and blowing us away on titles that include "The Man Man", "Life From The Moon", "Mobile Waltz", "Green Stocking", and "Corruption". ✨✧ Paul Bley12 + 6 In A Row ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
Solo, duo, and trio recordings from Paul Bley – all done in an amazingly inventive mode that takes us back to his key sessions of the early 70s! Bley's in great company here – with Hans Koch on reeds and Franz Koglmann on flugelhorn – both musicians who share Paul's sense of sound as shapes, shaped by the space in between – yet always in ways that still have a beating heart underneath – and are never too academic for their own sakes. The blend is a careful one, but it rings true here right from the very first note – on a beautifully recorded batch of 18 tracks! CD

Masabumi KikuchiKochi/Wishes ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
An excellent mid 70s Japanese fusion set, led by the Gil Evans protege Masabumi Kikuchi – with a very similar group to the one on his awesome Susto LP! The vibe isn't quite as funky on this outing – in fact it's a bit more reminiscent of Miles' spacey electric explorations – though there are some pretty hard groovin' moments should definitely appeal to fans of funky fusion. Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman play some nice coloristic lines on reeds, and Terumasa Hino is in fine form on trumpet. The rest of the group is rounded out by Reggie Lucas on guitar playing some hard choppy accompaniment to Kikuchi's synths and electric piano, Mtume on percussion, Al Foster on drums and Anthony Jackson on bass. We're especially keen on the dark and heavy "Auroral Flare", the spacious "Pacific Hushes" which opens with a beautiful line played by Hino and the set's closer "Alone". CD

Phil Woods, Gene Quill, Sahib Shihab, & Hal SteinFour Altos ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used ... $19.99 24.99
Four altos in perfect formation – a record that captures a young Phil Woods at the height of his powers, and offers a rare non-baritone set from the great Sahib Shihab! The style here is similar to the Prestige tenor blowing sessions of the time – with core rhythms by a trio that features Mal Waldron on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and altos from the four players in the lead – coming together a bit at the start, then breaking off into some really wonderful solo work that's arguably tighter and better executed than most tenor sessions of this type! Titles include "Pedal Eyes", "Kokochee", "No More Nights", "Kinda Kanonic", and "Staggers". CD

✨✧ Duke EllingtonIntimacy Of The Blues ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1967/1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A slightly smaller take on the Ellington sound – but one that's still a bit fuller than you might guess from the "Small Bands" on the cover! There's definitely a more intimate feel here than usual – especially given the size of ensembles Duke was working with in the 60s – but the approach is more like some of the earliest Ellington combos, a full feel as most of the group works tightly together, while one soloist snakes out with some deeply soulful lines on his own! The first six tracks here feature "The Combo Suite" – recorded in 1967, with some especially nice horn work from Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Cat Anderson on trumpet, and Lawrence Brown on trombone. Remaining tracks were recorded in 1970, in New York and Las Vegas – and include "Noon Mooning", "Rockochet", "All Too Soon", and "Tippy Toeing Through The Jungle Garden". CD
