Johnnie Taylor —
Raw Blues ... CD Stax, 1969. Used ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic Stax stuff from Johnnie, with great arrangements that mix blues and soul, and which offer a perfect backing to his soulful voice. Al Jackson produced the session, and the track list includes "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "That Bone", "That's Where It's At", and "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down". CD
Funky soul from Johnnie Taylor – a set that mixes tight core grooving with some larger arrangements from Bert Keyes and Rudy Robinson – a perfect blend that shows why Taylor easily stood out from some of his bluesy contemporaries! It's clear that Johnnie's just the right guy to handle a setting this hip – and since he's got Marvell Thomas on keyboards, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald Duck Dunn on bass, and Al Jackson on drums, there's more than enough kick at the bottom to keep things grooving. Titles include the great originals "I Had A Fight With Love", and "Separation Line" – plus hip takes on "Testify", "It's Your Thing", "Games People Play", and "Love Is A Hurtin Thing". CD
Killer soul from Johnnie Taylor, and really his first major LP! The record was Johnnie's second for Stax – and although the first one was good, this was the record that really had Johnnie hitting that funky bluesy sound that became his trademark into the 70s. The title cut – "Who's Making Love" – is a monster groover with a funky hook that was covered instantly by many jazz combos, and which riffs along with an Isley Brothers-ish kind of sound. The album features loads of other tasty numbers, too – all produced by Al Jackson and Don Davis – and featuring the cuts "Poor Make Believer", "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor", and "Payback Hurts". Plus, the CD features the bonus track "Rumors". CD
