A loving tribute to the late Charles Mingus – one that has a very different sound than the Mingus classics you might remember, thanks to inventive arrangements from Teo Macero! All tunes are originals by Teo, and they've got that shimmering large group style he first perfected in the 50s – updated here with contemporary keyboards from Mike Nock or Macero, and set to shifting horn patterns that are full of tone and color. Players include Pepper Adams, John Stubblefield, and Dave Liebman on saxes, Jon Faddis and Ted Curson on trumpets, Dave Valentin on flute, and Ryo Kawasaki on guitar – and titles include "Monk's Funk", "Open C", "Two Bits & A Piece", "Chill", and "Goodbye Mr Good Bass". We're always big fans of Bev Kelly's work, but this album is way hipper than the usual vocal album of its type from the time – thanks to a sweet little lineup that features Pony Poindexter on alto sax and Flip Nunez on piano! The presence of Poindexter's horn is always a treat, on the handful of smaller group sides he cut from this time – and Nunez's piano lines have an inherently rhythmic groove that comes out even on the mellower numbers – which often are somewhat spacious, but stepping along with a gentle groove underneath Kelly's fantastic vocals. Part of the credit for this groove goes to Johnny Allen, whose work on bass is great – and the group's completed by the drums of Tony Johnson, who's a bit more down in the mix. A surprisingly wonderful 70s meeting between Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker – recorded live, with sweet electric touches from CTI – in a style that shouldn't work so well, but which really comes off great! The approach is simple – Mulligan and Baker solo in a manner that's a bit like their 50s work, but which also unfolds more than usual with backing from a group that includes Bob James on electric piano, Ron Carter on bass, John Scofield on guitar, and Harvey Mason on drums. Tracks are long, with lots of space – hanging in a beautiful balance between electric and acoustic sounds. Titles include "Line For Lyons", "Song For An Unfinished Woman", "Song For Strayhorn" and Baker's favorite standard "My Funny Valentine". LP, Vinyl record album

The classic first album as a solo act from Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez – not the boogaloo artist with the same first and last name, but the singer who'd rose to fame on a series of classic albums with Johnny Pacheco! The style here is rich and soulful – a return to tradition in Latin male vocals, with roots that stretch past Pete's Puerto Rican homeland, and deep into 20th Century Afro-Cuban traditions. Arrangements are by Bobby Valentin, Louie Cruz, and Louie Ramirez – and the instrumentation mixes some 70s salsa brightness with the deeper tones of older years. The title's a bit misleading – as Chet Baker never really stopped singing, and in fact had found a way to mix his vocals with really nicely stretched-out solos on some of his European recordings from this generation! But the set does feature maybe a bit more vocals upfront than some of Chet's other records from the time – although there's also plenty of trumpet too – on nicely compact tracks performed with a great group that's perfect for the laidback, airy style of this generation of the Baker sound – one that we love more and more as the years go on! The quartet features the great Michel Graillier on piano, Ricardo Del Fra on bass, and John Engels on drums – on titles that include "How Deep Is The Ocean", "I Can't Get Started", "All Of You", "Look For The Silver Lining", "My Funny Valentine", "Alone Together", and "Body & Soul". A killer album from the Fania All-Stars – one that's quite different than most of their other work at the time, with an open-ended jam session feel that really takes us back to the old days! The group here is really just a sextet – the core combo used to launch the group name on Columbia Records – and the session is one that was originally done for Columbia in 1976, when Gene Page had to cancel a studio date, and the band got the chance to jam by themselves in the studio! The result is a groove that's strongly jazzy, with lots of descarga energy – played by a group that features Johnny Pacheco on flute, Papo Lucca on piano, Nicky Marrero on timbales, Ray Barretto on congas, Bobby Valentin on bass, and Roberto Roena on bongos and assorted percussion. Roena sings on one track, but most of the set is instrumental – with nice long cuts that include "The War Gods", "Seis Con El Mismo Sabor", "Vento Conmigo", "Taxi To Aguadilla", and "Guajira Para Los Pollos". A fresh new groove from The Fania All Stars – one that definitely has them picking up some of the Spanish elements mentioned in the title – the fusing them into the tight mix of Latin, club, and jazz they were doing at Columbia Records in the late 70s! These new elements are often light – a bit of acoustic guitar here, maracas there, or some slightly different rhythms – and they're warmed up nicely by the mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation used by the group – who are definitely at the height of their disco powers here! A slightly different take on the Modern Jazz Quartet sound of the early years – as the album features Milt Jackson's vibes in the company of MJQ bandmates Percy Heath and Connie Kay, but also includes Horace Silver on piano – in the spot normally reserved for John Lewis! The presence of Silver on piano gives a bit of a harder edge to the set, one that almost recalls some of Jackson's work on Blue Note in the early 50s, yet which is rounded out here by a few lighter and more lyrical touches on rhythm. The set includes a great reading of "Moonray", the Jackson original "Stonewall", and the tracks "Wonder Why", "I Should Care", and "My Funny Valentine". LP, Vinyl record album

A very different side of Ken Nordine than you might know from his more gimmicky records – and an album that showcases his voice in a whole new way! Apart from being the inventor of Word Jazz, Ken also did a heck of a lot of voiceover work in the 50s, 60s, and 70s – and this set has Ken reciting lyrics to evergreens and standards, in a mellow and romantic way that comes across quite nicely. Backing is by Fred Katz on cello, Johnny Frigo on bass, Dick Marx on piano, and Red Holt on drums – and titles include "Midnight Sun", "When I'm With You", "My Funny Valentine", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "All Of You". A later date – but proof that the Fania All Stars groove can always be strong, no matter what the setting! This album's actually recorded by a smaller ensemble from the larger group – a sextet that includes Ray Barretto on congas, Roberto Roena on bongos, Nicky Marrero on timbales, Bobby Valentin on bass, Papo Lucca on keyboards, and Johnny Pacheco on flute and guiro – a very percussive ensemble working here in a strongly jazz-based mode! The sound is great – and even at the few points when the keyboards are slightly modern, there's always an overall sound that preserves an older Latin jazz approach. Some numbers have chorus vocals, but these really don't dominate – and the main focus here is instrumental work – on titles that include "The Click","Allegria", "Guasasa", "Quasedito", "De Nuevo A La Carga", and a great cover of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together". Killer early work by the Fania All Stars – caught live at the legendary Cheetah club, which was the heart of the New York salsa scene at the start of the 70s! The album is easily one of the best by the group – and features long tracks that really capture the jamming intensity that occurred on stage when this many great artists were brought together in one space – kind of the "next step" for the older descarga mode put fort at the start of the 60s, pushed forward into the prouder, more unified Latin scene of the 70s!
