✨✧ VariousExplosive Rock Steady ... LP
Amalgamated/Joe Gibbs (UK), Late 1960s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 24.99 About May 20, 2024
A killer collection of early work from producer Joe Gibbs – the kind of all-burning material that made Joe such a fresh new voice on the rocksteady scene in Kingston, and a studio whiz who helped set the tone for countless others to come! There's a quality to this work that's wonderful – groups that are tight, but never uptight – and singers that are very much part of the groove, almost urged on by the instrumentation by the well-chosen studio players that Gibbs chose for these early gems on his Amalgamated record label. Titles include "Long Shot" by The Pioneers, "I'm Moving On" by Keith Blake, "Miss Tourist" by Errol Dunkley, "Hold Them" by Roy Shirley, "Train To Soulville" by Cool Sticky, "Push It In" by The Versatiles, and "Come Brothers" by Hugh Malcolm. ✨✧ Prince Far IUnder Heavy Manners ... LP
Joe Gibbs/VP, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A dark and murky classic from Prince Far I – a set that has his words of wisdom brewing up amidst a whole host of dubby productions from Joe Gibbs! The Prince takes dub production to fresh territory here – toasting over the tracks, but in a way that's very different than some of the more upbeat modes that you might find when a dee jay was working a crowd – and instead moodier, and more in his mind – with a sinister edge that really makes the album stand out, and which is maybe the blue print for the On-U Sound generation to come! Tracks include "Rain A Fall", "Big Fight", "Show Me Mine Enemy", "Deck Of Cards", "Young Generation", and "Heavy Manners". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Black UhuruShowcase ... LP
Joe Gibbs/Taxi (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great early moment from Black Uhuru – a set recorded before their famous albums for Island Records, and in this nice lean style that draws plenty from the production team of Sly & Robbie – who also add plenty to the rhythms too! The Revolutionaries give Black Uhuru a perfect vibe on the record – lean and spacious, with tracks that stretch out a lot longer than their Island material – which only seems enhance the righteous message in the music, expanded out in the moodier, dubbier space of the recording! Wonderful all the way through, and a really unified set – with cuts that include "Leaving To Zion", "General Penitentiary", "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", "Shine Eyed Gal", 'Abortion", "Natural Reggae Beat", and "Plastic Smile". ✨✧ CultureTwo Sevens Clash ... LP
Joe Gibbs (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 24.99 About May 20, 2024
The first album from Culture, and still their most classic – a set that takes its title from a prediction by Marcus Garvey – who said that there would be trouble in the world when "two sevens clash" on July 7, 1977! Fortunately, we made it all through that date in one piece – and good thing too, as the record's gone on to even more legendary status as the years have gone on – with a righteous sort of energy that just seems to get more important over the decades. Joe Gibbs produced, and arranged with Errol Thompson – and the slow-stepping rhythms of the set, heavy on bottom-end sounds, are a perfect backdrop for the message-oriented lyrics in the music. Every cut's a classic – and titles include "I'm Alone In The Wilderness", "Pirate Days", "Two Sevens Clash", "Calling Rastafari", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Get Ready To Ride The Lion To Zion", "Black Starliner Must Come", "Jah Pretty Face", "See Them A Come", and "Natty Dread Taking Over". ✨✧ MonyakaClassical Roots Showcase ... LP
Hornin Sounds (France), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A dubbed up take on tracks recorded in Kingston in 1983 – work done at Channel One and Joe Gibbs studios, and given some slight augmentation here to stretch out the original tracks in a really great way! There's definitely plenty of roots, as promised in the title – hardly any classical at all – and the group features lead guitar and vocals from Errol Moore, plus more vocals from William Brown and Danny Miller – singers who slide back and forth with all sorts of cool inflections and phrasing. Titles include "Unity & Love", "Jah Rules", "All The Love Is Gone", "this Plantation", "Lamentation", and "Questions Of Life". LP, Vinyl record album
