The production is by Barry Goldberg and Mike Bloomfield – and they're clearly helping Cotton tighten up his groove – and almost hit some Atlantic soul-styled modes at times. The second Verve album from James Cotton, and oddly a rootsier effort than the first! While Cotton's debut often had some more soul-styled grooves in the mix, this one's a lot more stripped-down and bluesy – in a style that echoes Chess Records from a decade before! Cotton plays harmonica and sings, and other instrumentation includes guitar, organ, bass, drums, and tambourine – all used in standard late 60s bluesy modes – that revivalist approach to the genre that helped shift its audiences in the 70s. A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! Muddy Waters makes a classic appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival – playing a folksy set of blues in the years before the festival had turned more strongly towards that sort of music! The performance is surprisingly well-recorded – at a level that's similar to Waters' earlier studio dates for Chess, but with a clarity that's impressive, given the live setting – and which captures just a bit of the open space in which the group was working. Waters' vocals and guitar are supported by harmonica from James Cotton and piano from Otis Spann – who also sings on one number too.
