Alice Island BandSplendid Isolation ... LP
Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". LP, Vinyl record album

Jim CapaldiOpen Your Heart – The Island Recordings 1972 to 1976 (Oh How We Danced/Whale Meat Again/Short Cut Draw Blood/bonus material) (3CD/DVD set) ... CD
Island/Esoteric (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD & DVD set ... $34.99
Three full albums from Jim Capaldi, plus lots of bonus work – and a DVD of live BBC performances too! First up is Oh How We Danced – the first solo album from Jim Capaldi – and a wicked little set that has Capaldi not only working with fellow bandmates from Traffic, but also with some of the best musicians on the Muscle Shoals scene! The combination of both unlock an even more soulful style than you'd expect from any Traffic side project – and provide a perfect focus for Capaldi's great vocals – already crossing over big to a soul scene with his Traffic recordings, but sparking even new interest here with Muscle Shoals rhythms. The sound is wonderful – quite different than Capaldi's bigger hits in later years, and with a rootsy, earnest feel that reminds us that at their roots, all these British acts really got things right at the start – with a freshness that needs to be remembered, even amidst their later cliches. Titles include "Eve", "Don't Be A Hero", "Last Day Of Dawn", "Oh How We Danced", "Open Your Heart", and "Love Is All You Can Try". Next is Whale Meat Again – a record with a beautiful mixing of modes – Jim Capaldi's Traffic-bred, London-styled vocals, and the sweet southern soul grooves of Muscle Shoals – all wrapped together with a sound that's even tighter than Capaldi's debut album! Jim's a big edgier here overall – both in the way he delivers the vocals, and in the lyrics of the tunes – and his singing's underscored perfectly by help from Jimmy Johnson on guitar, Barry Beckett on piano and organ, David Hood on bass, and Roger Hawkins on drums – all of whom create the right sort of warm Muscle Shoals vibe to make Capaldi's music sound wonderfully soulful. Steve Winwood plays a bit of guest organ on the set, and may well help with backing vocals – and titles include the funky "Low Rider" (different than the War tune) – plus "We'll Meet Again", "Summer Is Fading", "My Brother", "It's Alright", and "Yellow Sun". Short Cut Draw Blood is the third solo album from Traffic's Jim Capaldi, and maybe the most obscure of his early work – a set that was done after Traffic had broken up, but still with some strong help from Steve Winwood – working here in an all-star array of London and Muscle Shoals musicians, which includes Barry Beckett, Rebop Kwaku Baah, Pete Carr, Jess Roden, Chris Spedding, and others! Capaldi's easygoing groove and great way with a tune are fully intact – and titles include "Living On A Marble", "Johnny Too Bad", "Goodbye Love", "Seagull", "Keep On Trying", and "Love Hurts". Box set features bonus tracks "Going Down Slow All The Way", "Tricky Dick Rides Again", "Sugar Honey", "Still Talkin", and "Talkin About My Baby". DVD features a Old Grey Whistle Test performance from 1976, with the Jim Capaldi Band – and one more from 1976 with Jim Capaldi & The Space Cadets. CD

Ultra-hip work from pianist Keith Jarrett – a session that's filled with joy and life, and which has a lot more energy than some of his albums for ECM! The work here is kind of a refinement of the freer styles that Jarrett had laid down on previous albums – performed with a strongly rhythmic undercurrent, but one that also opens up to some strong top-end melodies as well – played not only by Jarrett on piano, but also by Dewey Redman on tenor, in a group with Sam Brown on guitar, Paul Motian on drums, and Guilherme Franco and Danny Johnson on percussion. Titles include "The Rich & The Poor", "Blue Streak", "Le Mistral", "Angles Without Edges", "Treasure Island", and "Sister Fortune". LP, Vinyl record album

Lou ReedConey Island Baby ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Lou Reed's maybe a bit more subtle here than during his years with the Velvet Underground, and his earliest solo records – but he also has this new sort of maturity that really points the way forward to the years to come! Coney Island Baby further marks the continuing legacy of Lou Reed as a hell of a songwriter – able to portray human strivings and failings with a surprisingly sensitive ear – all in the kind of modes that might not hit you over the head the first time around, but which are completely compelling over the next few spins. There's always that wry little quality to Reed's vocals here – that bite that almost comes as a weary attempt to snap back at the world – and while the album's maybe not the most transgressive release of 1976, it's got a subtle power that's made it a lot more long-lasting than some of its contemporaries. Titles include "Crazy Feeling", "Charly's Girl", "A Gift", "Ooohhh Baby", "Coney Island Baby", and "She's My Best Friend". LP, Vinyl record album

Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 29.99
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A fantastic look at the groundbreaking sounds of the Disques Debs label – one of the most important companies producing music in the French Caribbean – and an imprint whose impact was strongly felt on the other side of the Atlantic as well! The core of these grooves is that compelling biguine rhythm that flowed from Guadeloupe – almost a mix of Latin and jazz, but with a different sort of vibe of its own – which was then interwoven with elements from Cuban, European, and African styles amidst the initial decade or so of recordings on this set! Debs had strong ties with Paris, and a bit with the West African scene – and their recorded legacy almost follows old colonial paths, but in reverse – creating this wonderful criss-crossing of cultures amidst their grooves. The package is wonderful – loads of vintage photos and great notes in the best Strut Records way – and titles include "Douce Kombass" by Henri Debs Quintet, "Mr Morin" by Joseph Lacides, "Lan Mise" by Geno Exilie, "Feeling Happy" by Cyril Dias Et Son Orchestre, "Ces P'Tits Je T'Aime" by Daniel Forestal Et Sa Guitare, "Assez Fait Cancan" by Guy Conquette, "Stanislas" by Eric Virgal, "Meringue Mondey" by Remy Mondey, "Si I Bon Di I Bon" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Salvana" by Dolor Et Les Diables Du Rhythme, and "Van Van" by Henri Guedon Et Les Contesta. Coney Island is a hell of a place – a refuge for New Yorkers for over 100 years, and still pretty amazing today – with a surprisingly strong legacy that also includes the park's influence on more serious artists over the decades, a legacy that's presented beautifully in this oversize book! The volume's not a glossy presentation of the tourist mecca – but instead a very well-done, well-researched art book – featuring paintings, photographs, film stills, and other images that show the way that Coney Island figured in the larger high art community in and around New York – representations by folks as diverse as Weegee, Woody Allen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Davidson, Reginald Marsh, and dozens of others. The large book is a monograph for a museum exhibit, but clearly goes far beyond the event – and also features text by Charles Musser, Robin Jaffee Frank, Josh Glick, and others. 286 heavy hardcover pages – with color and black and white images throughout! Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! BugglesAge Of Plastic (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1980. Used ... $5.99
A landmark record – even if nobody thought so at the time! The Buggles were the first group of Trevor Horn – soon to be more famous through his work with Yes, Art Of Noise, and the ZTT label – and the group's lasting legacy will forever be the tinny pop number "Video Killed The Radio Star", contained on this album, and the first video ever played on MTV. The rest of the album's pretty darn great – in a similar mode to the more famous tune, with quirky little pop styles colliding with each other, all handled by Horn and Geoff Downes, in a flutter of keyboards, spare backings, and slight guitars – kind of a last gasp of the British mainstream pop sound of the 70s, trying to exist in a post-punk world. Titles include "Kid Dynamo", "Living In the Plastic Age", "I Love You Miss Robot", "Astroboy", and "Johnny On The Monorail". Plus, this reissue also includes 3 bonus tracks – "Island", "Technopop", and a different version of "Johnny On The Monorail". CD

John CaleFear (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Island/Culture Factory (France), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 15.98
One of the best solo albums ever from John Cale – a set that has the singer playing a lot of piano alongside his vocals, which creates this moody, evocative quality that's really wonderful! Cale's songwriting is always pretty compelling, but the heavy use of piano really brings out a depth to his lyrics here – further enforced by the relatively spacious sense of recording used throughout. A few numbers add in more electric elements – but with Brian Eno along on electronics and listed as a co-producer, the record's definitely got this balance between elements that's very careful. Phil Manzanera plays guitar, and also helped with the overall construction of the set – and you can hear some of the best elements of his own solo sets too. Titles include the classic "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend", plus "Gun", "The Man Who Couldn't Afford To Orgy", "You Know More Than I Know", "Momamma Scuba", and "Buffalo Ballet". CD

DefunktDefunkt In America ... CD
Antilles/Island, 1988. Used ... $7.99
Trombone-heavy funk from Joseph Bowie and Defunkt – a key crossover album in the late 80s, and one of the few mainstream funk efforts of its type! By this point, Defunkt have shaken off some of the rockier edges of earlier years, and are going for a more soul-based sound that's clearly inspired by the success of the Prince empire, but which also has a sharper bite overall. Most numbers have vocals, and vamp along with a lot of guitars in the mix – and there's a tightness here that shows that Joe was definitely at the top of his game, in a way that might well make this one the ultimate Defunkt album! Tracks include "Smooth Love", "Eraserhead", "A Peace Of Mind", "In America", "Change", "Love You From Afar", and "Spiritual Sponsor". CD

Island, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Drake's work is impossible to describe adequately, but if you've ever heard him, you probably stopped dead in your tracks the minute you first caught his voice. We still do the same – and it's a pleasure to have this one in stock! Titles include "Fly", "At The Chime Of A City Clock", "Hazy Jane", "Poor Boy", and "One Of These Things First". Godlike work from the legendary Nick Drake – and exactly the kind of record that's made him a continuing legend over the years! The style is completely its own – not really folk or rock, but not really jazz either – yet served up with plenty of jazzy phrasing that's helped keep Drake's music fresher than most as the decades move on – and which makes each song here a really rich discovery – even if, like us, you've heard the album hundreds of times in the past! The production is wonderful – with slight underscorings of strings that help unlock dark corners of the songs – and tracks include the classic "River Man" – easily one of Nick's best songs ever – plus "Fruit Tree", "Day Is Done", "Three Hours", "Saturday Sun", and "Time Has Told Me". A record we'd never part with – ever! A full house, and a strong change for Fairport Convention – working here without founder Ashley Hutchings or vocalist Sandy Denny – but finding their way forward through the new strengths of Richard Thompson! Thompson contributed more songs to this album than before, and also joins the lineup for a new vocal sound – one that, without any female singer in the mix, really gives the group a different feel than before – almost a fresh take on some of the territory they'd been moving through on previous records. The vocals are often understated, but in a way that gives the guitars, mandolin, and fiddle even more power – but in a way that's more rocky than folksy, and we mean that in the best way possible. Titles include "Poor Will & The Jolly Hangman", "Walk Awhile", "Doctor Of Physick", "Dirty Linen", "Sloth", and "Sir Patrick Spens". (Promo in an Atlantic sleeve, with a peeled spot from sticker removal.)

Mike HarrisonMike Harrison/Smokestack Lightning/Rainbow Rider ... CD
Island/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Three overlooked albums by British singer Mike Harrison – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Mike Harrison – a wonderful solo debut from the singer who made Spooky Tooth sound so great on their albums, maybe even sounding better here on his own! The album is clearly conceived and put together by Mike – with backup help from The Junkyard Band, who underscore the yearning, earnest qualities in his vocals – spun out with a snakey, raspy charm, with a sound that's maybe a more intimate take on territory explored by Procol Harum. The songs are great, and the whole record has a quality level that really attests to the all-great quality of Island Records at this point – with tracks that include "Pain", "Lonely People", "Mother Nature", "Call It A Day", "Damian", and "Wait Until The Morning". Smokestack Lightning is great solo work from Mike Harrison, ex-Spooky Tooth – a fantastic singer who should have been huge as a solo act – maybe a bit like Colin Blunstone, whose sound with The Zombies was so important, but could never have a huge career on his own – even while he created some wonderful albums in the process! This set's a well-crafted gem through and through – recorded at Muscle Shoals, but with a sound that's free of any of the hoke of those oft-used studios – as instead of bending to southern modes, Harrison uses the ace musicians to underscore some of the depth of his own approach in a really great way. Titles include "Turning Over", "Wanna Be Free", "Tears", "What A Price", and "Paid My Dues". Rainbow Rider has Mike Harrison maybe hitting some harder rock territory than before, with some roots rock moments – more a part of the overall sound of the group, and with some pretty heavy guitars up there in the lead – which seems to bring out a very different quality in Mike's vocals. Titles include "Okay Lay Lady Lay", "Like A Road Leading Home", "Maverick Woman Blues", "You & Me", "I'll Keep It With Mine", and "Friend". CD

PJ HarveyDry – Demos (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Island, 1992. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
The original demos for PJ Harvey's classic debut album Dry – tracks that maybe have a vibe that's even more open and earnest than some of the later studio versions! Things are relatively stripped-down – really the core of the tunes, without that trademark production that also made PJ stand out from the rest – and in a way, some of these numbers are maybe even more powerful, as the lady herself is right out front, unprotected by a wall of noise or any other sonic barrier. Originally issued with initial copies of the album release, now out for the first time as a separate package – with demo versions of "Fountain", "Water", "Plants & Rags", "Joe", "Sheela Na Gig", "Happy & Bleeding", "O Stella", "Dress", and "Oh My Lover". Island/Rocket, 1973. Used ... $4.99
The crowning achievement of a young Elton John – and the record that took an already-great run of earlier records, and pushed it even further with a new depth of songwriting and imagination! The double-length set isn't exactly a concept album – at least not one with a unified narrative – but it works beautifully as a set of little pictures of the world seen through the eyes of Elton and Bernie Taupin – both at the height of their powers, and able to balance catchy commercial tunes with some grittier undercurrents. The set's filled with classics – and titles include "Candle In The Wind", "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "Bennie & The Jets", "Social Disease", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Harmony", "Jamaica Jerk-Off", and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout. And sure, some of the cuts here are some of Bob's biggest hits ever – but heard in the context of the core album, they've got a lot more righteous power than when they're cribbed for a commercial or a TV soundtrack. Titles include "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Exodus", "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". John MartynSolid Air ... LP
Island, 1973. Very Good+ ... $49.99
A really beautiful little record from John Martyn – a set in which he's really perfected his talents, and found a way to stand out from just about anyone else in the pack – including the best of his British folk rock contemporaries! Martyn plays acoustic guitar, but the record's hardly folk at this point – because his vocals have all these jazzy changes, maybe a bit like Joni Mitchell was hitting at the same point in her career – more sophisticated, but very organic and never forced – with this quality that makes just about every word that comes from Martyn's voice resonate with a really fantastic quality. His guitar playing is as wonderful as ever – and again, filled with jazzy phrasing without ever being jazz at all – and the whole thing is maybe a record to proudly put Martyn in the company of Nick Drake on his few classics for Island. Titles include "Solid Air", "Over The Hill", "I'd Rather Be The Devil", "The Easy Blues", "The Man In The Station", "Dreams By The Sea", and "Don't Want To Know". LP, Vinyl record album

Courtney PineJourney To The Urge Within ... LP
Island, 1986. Sealed ... $7.99
Excellent work from the hip hop of British jazz in the 80s – and one of those records that we somehow didn't rate that much at the time, but which really sounds great to our ears going back to it now! Pine plays tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet – working in a soulful mode that stretches back to Coltrane and Dolphy, but which is somehow economized a bit in terms of phrasing – going for the simple soulfulness of the best moments of the past, and working within a realm of styles that are open, yet never sloppy or self-conscious. Cleveland Watkiss lays down some great vocals on two numbers – and other players include Julian Joseph on piano, and Orphey Robinson on vibes. Titles include "CGC", "Sunday Song", "Children Of The Ghetto", "As We Would Say", "Peace", and "Miss Interpret". LP, Vinyl record album

Poncho SanchezTrane's Delight ... LP
Island Empire, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $33.99 34.98
Poncho Sanchez is a genius – one of the leading lights of the west coast Latin scene at the end of the 70s, and a musician who's never failed to give us his best over the decades – so much so, that he may well be one of the few (along with Eddie Palmieri) who've continued to keep the jazz sound of their style growing strongly during the 21st Century! This album's an instant treasure – a nod to the greatness of John Coltrane, as you'd guess from the title – but a record that's really as distinct and powerful as Poncho's best from his older catalog – really creatively put together, with a focus not just on rhythms, but on really well-spun, well-conceived solos – modern on the edges, but swinging throughout – with work from a group that includes Francisco Torres on trombone, Ron Blake on trumpet, Robert Hardt on alto and tenor, and Andy Langham on piano. Torres handled the arrangements, and the album's got all the percussion you'd expect from a Sanchez album too – on titles that include "Soul Bourgeoisie", "Liberia", "Giant Steps", "Yam'mote", "Trane's Delight", "Todo Termino", "Sube", and "Blue Train". 20th Century Steel BandWarm Heart, Cold Steel ... LP
Island, 1976. Near Mint- ... $29.99
One of the greatest steel band records ever – and a hip hop sample classic from way back! Sure, there were other hip steel bands back in the 70s – but nobody else ever got as far as 20th Century – ending up on a major label, cutting some key funky covers, and crossing over with their massive "Heaven & Hell" – a cut that was DJ Red Alert's theme song in the old days! The group have a wonderful sound – mixing familiar steel band modes with bits of American funk – and creating a unique hybrid that's way more than just reworked covers, or simple copycat styles. In addition to the classic "Heaven & Hell", the set also features versions of "Love's Theme", "Shaft", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and "Standing In The Shadows Of Love" – plus the cuts "Lazy Days", "Endless Vibrations", "No 1", "Never Keep Secrets", "We've Got To Work Together", and "Dance Away". Late 70s solo effort from this founding member of the Wailers, self-produced on his own Solomonic label and then licensed to Island for worldwide distribution. A solid roots effort from one of the most significant moments in Jamaican music history, this album maintains Livingston's nicely crafted take on the heavily political roots rock that was both his and the Wailers' signature sound, and features backing from much of the Wailers band, though Robbie Shakespeare takes Family Man's bass spot. Includes a nice version of the Wailers' classic "Get Up, Stand Up", plus "Johnny Too Bad", "Follow Fashion Monkey", "Who Feels It", "Scheme Of Things", "Quite Trying", "Wanted Children" and "Moses Children".
