Excellent instrumental work from Sergio – less in the bossa mode of his other instrumentals from the 60s, recorded with a sweet electric piano groove, and some dreamy 60's arrangements by Dave Grusin! "Comin Home Baby" is as great as any version of the tune – spanking and sparkling with a driving groove underneath! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A strange but great single from James Brown! The cut has a slow vamping "honky tonk" kind of groove – and James raps over the top about America, how great it is, and how much opportunity the country offers. The whole thing's got a very positive message – and the monologue is one of James' more compelling ones! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Stellar early work from The Ovations – a sweet soul harmony group with a real love for Sam Cooke! "I Believe" is a nicely stepping number, swaying along with a summer night feel. "Qualifications" is a bit more of a rocker – jauntily vamping, but still with that sweet Sam Cooke style on the vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Diviniti sings on both cuts here – adding in some mighty soulful vocals! "Shine" is a great clubby groover from a few years back – and definitely showcases the warmer side of dancefloor work that Shuya Okino has been bringing to the world since his days in Kyoto Jazz Massive – a wonderfully uplifting tune! The flipside's a great take on Shuya's excellent "Sun Will Rise" anthem – again with excellent vocals from Diviniti! 7-inch, Vinyl record
One of the funkiest cuts ever from reedman Harold Alexander – served up here in the 45rpm single version, which is short, tight, and really concentrates on the funky drums at the core – although still also topped with plenty of fierce funky flute from the man himself! Speaking of funky drums, Pretty Purdie is on the flipside with "Heavy Soul Slinger" – a cut that definitely earns its name, as the funky drums mix with great conga, massive bass, and this warm organ line that really sends the whole thing home! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A gem of a cut from Ty Karim – one of those singers who should have been huge, especially with a vocal presentation like this! Ty manages to soar on the upbeat groove, but has a special sort of crackle that really sends the lyric home – proud and fragile at the same time, in a way that's very unique! That quality also comes through in "All At Once" – a tune with a cool stepping sort of groove, which pushes Karim's vocal range even more as the tune overflows with soulful power! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A really cool cut from the Chicago scene – a bassy boogie number, but one with a bit of a rap as well – a great tribute to our Windy City home, backed with a very catchy chorus! There's plenty of bass in "Sexy Lady" too – very old school, snapping, and with a rollerskating pace – in support of lyrics that are sung and spoken, often with some very cool processing to trip things out 7-inch, Vinyl record
